I am an old guy, I love all kinds of music. Fortunately I heard bits and pieces, and even attended some concerts were Beethoven was performed, ever since my childhood. Today, I was musically and spiritually “blown away.” For whatever reason I have not heard, nor even heard of, Missa solemnis! I saw this listing, put it on, and laid down. I began placing all my attention (to the best of my abilities), on each instrument, and each voice, and each melodic line. What a journey, what a tour de force! Yes, I agree with Beethoven, this is his greatest work. Probably the greatest musical composition I have ever heard! May we all be so blessed to hear and to comprehend the power and the Beauty, of Missa solemnis; and feel the power and the Beauty that is Life.
Once The Missa gets you it has you for life. You can't get away LOL So much beauty and spirit in this piece. I still find myself humming a tune some times and have to think 'where did that come from' and it is from the Agnus Dei or some other part of The Missa Solemnis. There is a LOT here, I hope it gets you like it did me. An absolute pinnacle of music that does not get the respect and play it deserves but such is life when too many people have the same attention span as a goldfish.
@@vitorcunha6715 Wow I’m so glad you were observant and open minded. I love this piece. If the gates of heaven open for me I believe I will hear this Gloria!
@Jim G. May I suggest another piece? I’m not saying it’s the same or better than Missa, but once I found it I was addicted! It’s Dixit Dominos by George Frederick Handel, Monteverdi choir conducted by John Eliot Gardiner
It wasn’t OUR father, James, it was HIS father Johann van Beethoven. Or King Frederick William II of Prussia, depending on which narrative, you follow. But it was clearly Johann, whether as biological or foster father, whom we have to thank for the composer Ludwig van B. Johann recognised the musical talent of the young lad and made sure he received intensive instruction in Music and composition from excellent teachers. So, no Big Man in the Sky, but, just possibly, a Hohenzollern prince sowing some wild oats. Or plain Herr Johann van Beethoven sired the genius considered one of the most important composers of all time.
The greatest composer of all time??? Why not “one of the greatest”? There are some who would grant that attribute to Johann Sebastian Bach, who imho just pips Luggi at the post.
The reopening of the Frauenkirchen was a special event. And for the first concert, an extraordinary composer and his extraordinary work were chosen. There are several extraordinary sacred music´s works composed by other famous composers as well. But Beethoven's Missa Solemnis is also a unique work. Beautiful melodically and in content. It has accompanied me throughout my life since his first hearing in the St. Vitus Church in Prague. For me, what is particularly touching about it is that it seems to reflect the entire dramatic life of Beethoven. His struggle for love, for faith, for understanding the world and the sense of life. The music of his Missa Solemnis expresses this with its depth and range of expression, from moments of dramatic search, through moments of reflection, joy and suffering to a magnificent meeting with God in the heavens and resting in final peace... dona nobis pacem. May our lives also reach such peace in Eternity in due time
I was really in awe of this composition, so i researched about Missa Solemnis and when Beethoven started becoming deaf. He was fully deaf in 1819, when he started composing this (1819-1823). A deaf man composing one of the greatest masses ever written, if not the greatest. IMO, this is a work of God. 🥰 Thank you, Mr. Beethoven.
Very true. A God gifted genius.. !!! Very touching music, and you can actually feel the pain, (emotional, spiritual and physical), that he had to endure in his journey towards reaching the summit in his career and life as a great composer, against all odds. He suffered huge maltreatment by those who failed to pay him for all his great, incomparable commissioned works and music services in breach of legal contracts. Beethoven's music and legacy will live forever. RIP genius of geniuses, Ludwig van Beethoven. A true advocate of Peace, Human Dignity & Justice!!
Having taken part in performances of "Missa Solemnis" myself, (as a choral singer in London), I am mightily moved by this superb performance by Staatskapelle Dresden & a great choir, Beethoven seems to be communicating directly to ME personally. Danke schoen!
Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for having the privilege to hear this performance of Missa Solemnis. From the magnificence of the first movement to the austere beauty of Santus, this performance is nothing but perfection. Thank you for sharing.
I have sang Quoniam Tu Solus. I have to admit it is one of the highest pieces I have ever had to sing. Beethoven shoots for the stars. Beautiful rendition!
Wonderful in all aspects, hight quality in video and sound, mainly the cameras. The conductor, orquesta, singers and chorus are beautifully captured. Thanks to DW and RUclips for brings to us such an awesome work.
The Dona Nobis Pacem near the end of the Agnus Dei is probably Beethoven's finest piece of work. Many thanks to the performers, to the engineers responsible for reopening the Frauenkirche, and to the people of Dresden.
Possibly my favorite of any musical composition. During one particularly difficult period of life, I really latched onto this performance of the Agnus Dei. Listened to it over and over and over. It really does transcend this menial existence.
Ho avuto l'onore di eseguirla con il coro di Vicenza negli anni ottanta diretta dal Maestro Giuliano Fracasso nella bellissima chiesa di S.Corona di Vicenza questo enorme e stupendo capolavoro.
What a magnificent and moving performance , worthy of Beethoven’s beseeching the heavens, finally, to grant us peace. Bravos to the chorus, orchestra, soloists and maestro Luisi, with whom I am unfamiliar, but who I would like hear more from. A word about the acoustics: they seemed really good when I was at a concert in-the frauenkirke a couple of years ago, and this video confirms that impression, which sort of surprises me, given the unique shape of the frauenkirke.
kurt vonnegut's book and movie slaughter house five began with the firebombing of dresden. this missa is a fitting salute to the reconstruction of the church , rising from its destruction in ww2 and singing to heaven a new beginning. . good choice in beethoven and the strength of this performance. beautiful. thank you
The vision and drive of those who raised the Frauenkirche from the dead give me hope for our species. I knew a Lancaster pilot who bombed Dresden in February, 1945. He was a volunteer like all Bomber Command aircrew where life expectancy was rather short, something he knew full well when he chose to fly with them. I asked why, he said it was the best he could do to win the war. I asked him what he felt about our strategy of bombing civilian targets -he said his heart was heavy but his head would do it again. The horror of war has so many faces and apparent contradictions -wonderfully stared down by this gorgeous performance in the Frauenkirche.
An excellent performance, excitingly conducted and beautifully sung in a magnificent setting. The sonics are superb, including the way they miked the violin soloist in the Sanctus. Often it's virtually inaudible.
I personally grew up on Mozart's Requiem as the key piece of sacred classical music in my life. I need to listen to the Missa Solemnis more. It seems like a very complex and intricate piece. It might overshadow the Requiem for me one day.
