- Adventure photographer Chris Burkard is an expert at photographing surfers who ride the coldest, most punishing waves on the planet. He's used to battling the elements in order to get the perfect shot, but one fateful storm in Iceland nearly broke him. Still, he couldn't pass up the opportunity to capture an epic adventure under the greatest light show on earth.

The ads are what got me here. Actually ones that are worthwhile watching. Thanks

Chris Burkard deserves more recognition beyond Instagram.
guy drives a Defender...uses Canon...buddy is riding a log...in winter...at night...in the Arctic...awesome
Gotta love a true Land Rover. I got a Range Rover in Utah, and I’m always like man I need some real snow to throw at this bad boy, to see what it can handle... then I watch this, and am thinking yeah idk about that haha
@@aceggkspade958 Just for your information .... Iceland is NOT in the Arctic....
I just came across this guys work ! Incredible stuff. Some of the best pics I’ve ever seen.
Seeing the northern lights once in my life is number 1 in my bucket list
Would have been nice to see more than a second or 2 of the actual surfing that night.
sooo incredible pictures. Please go on with this awsome storys and Videos about this!! I love this channel
Mission accomplished Chris... I’m down to go to Iceland or Greenland right now! I’ll have to wait about 5-7 more years for my daughter to be old enough to travel with me but that’s ok. It will be worth it
Chris Burkard is one of my favorite photographer. Renan Ozturk and Chris is really an amazing guy
Awesome video.Walk away with an amazing poster thats for sure
Northern lights during surfing is like to be on another planet for a moment. great video gbs ;)

Amazing story!!!such an inspiration!!i love this story hehe 😉😌
This inspires me
I grew up in a tropical country. If you suddenly place me in a cold place like the one's Chris has been too, I would probably say the same things. And how about you, ice people? Try living in the tropics, see how you won't feel like you're burning when you get here.
this is just awesome ! keep up the great works ! :)
one of my dreams is ti see the northen lights in person, someone know how to do it?
without going todo dar or speending too much money im from Argentina ‘ ᵔ ‘
without going todo dar or speending too much money im from Argentina ‘ ᵔ ‘
I heard they get them in Argentina quite often, just keep your eyes open on a clear night
@@elliottglynn5055 mmm no, Not in Argentina, In the antartic yes, I'm from Ushuaia but yet is too far from the south pole. It's and intense Journey and an expensive one. It Will be more easy to see in alaska or Iceland
@@lunabujalesky no honestly I've been to Argentina and seen them before, one of the best places in the world for it.
Ingo is in this video! 3:49! My lady and I surfed with him last year!
THATS AMAZING!!!
Dream job
nice 4X5 rig!!!
1:04 I have been in that beach 3 months ago... doesn't it have a amusement park on the left side??? My brother live in california
How was the 'light up' done on the surfers and wave? computer graphics programs? or a narrow beam of light? I'm expecting computer graphics made for the lighting focus. But please confirm how it's done.
Bond Summers dude those are northern lights.
I'm talking about the narrow range light-ups on waves, not the northern lights, such as at 5:18 for example
Bond Summers yah I was wondering the same. it looks like the wave has lights behind and underneath the water.
dumb
holy cow man. yapyapyap. Less talky, more northern lights.
Wow, I'm really happy he survived that "armageddon". Amazing photographer, but dear lord, give me a break with the survival BS. Regards, someone who's lived under these conditions for two decades, without dying. Must write a book about it.
That's true, people have various tolerances. But Chris, regardless of how good he is (he's without a doubt amazing), keeps bigging up these places, talking about how harsh and deserted they are, when often, that's not the case. It also shows a complete lack of awareness, when they know that arctic explorers and Greenlanders are working and living under circumstances that actually can be described with the words that's being used in this vid. It's called perspective, and I would assume a traveling photographer would have some.
Yes, some of it has to do with tolerance, but other times, it's just not correct what's "reported". Look at the Lofoten Islands edit - talking about the sea like it's unused and not known to the locals, when it's been the main source of income since the viking age. Almost disrespectful, IMO.
Dedication
Walk away with an amazing poster thats for sure
What's up,
Dope movie!
Have a good day :D
Anyone know what camera that was at 5:28 ?
wow
what is that device that he uses @ 5:40 ?? can someone tell me, please.....
+BillXCIII
ohh wow!! that's amazing!! cheers for the info! I appreciate it :)
so are they great for large format prints?
You don't know what you are talking about. Granular size in film emulsion limits clarity more than today's ultra-micro CCDs.
What lens he used
2:00 any idea where this is?
He had it so hard out there being cold, while the surfers didn't give a fuck
pretty sure the surfer is Justin Quintal
The real question is
Who is the photographer recording the photographer?
I did this but instead of surfing it was snowboarding in canada 2 yrs ago under the northern lights
Good lord! What is happening in there!?
Apparently I'm dead
You've seen the northern lights in person? Whole different thing.
apparently I'm dead inside.
what a special snowflake you are

Sadly none of our history books will show this.

There's definitely something dead inside me.
Hi I subscribed
It's a bird, it's a plane, *NO IT'S THE NORTHERN LIGHTS*
Instead of surfers under northern lights, we mostly get a dude talking about himself.
Yeah but still interesting
Not just "a dude" smh that's Chris-fricking-Burkard 📷
He's one annoying dude. Great photos. Dead intellect.
Yeah its kind of rude lol I agree. He's cool but I just wanted to relax and watch nameless surfers under a cool painted sky ..... instead I just started feeling lonely and envious of this guys life lol
Yes! All bow! The Lovely & Talented... Chris-fricking-Burkard.
I mean, he's so committed to showing HIS great work to the world.
They are not front this wold they from some planets
Who would surf in the cold?! Totally impossible to the public! What an awkward destination for surfing!
I guess theres something dead inside me
do it for the gram
Can auroral display jump to new display like switching an oscilloscope input? See 4:44 to 4:45. Looks odd, yet electrically it makes sense. Strange to see. ruclips.net/video/S8AJPHjLTR8/видео.htmlm30s
And I'm groveling in whitewash in south Florida most of the time. 😢
First comment
To much talking, to less surfing... common guys dont make such a big deal out of it surfing in arctic is so chill and normal these days... just surf
"something that could be in the history books"
lol
people have been doing this way before you ever did
To some Icelandic surfers Chris Burkhard is the Drama Lama... "it was like Armageddon" hahaha. There are people here that surf that all the time, take no pictures, don´t pat themselves on the back, and don´t half drown in their own self glorification... Give it a rest Chris.
well you can film the next time and try to get a bum job like chris ahaha, so you can be payed for doing nothing hnanahahahahaha
Not to mention the fact that he 'wants to show the world that these places exist' as well as almost made it into 'history books'. I like the video/short film he created and agree that these landscapes are somewhat underrepresented. However, his way of describing his adventure reflects that typical Western perspective on nature/foreign cultures that is so incompatible with the icelandic spirit.
what a fucking loser you are shithead. Get a life and do something with it
😂 dudes made out to be a champion cause he’s on the beach taking shots in his 500 dollar parka. Dudes out there surfing are who should be profiled.
so where is the great photo hes been talking about this whole time? lol I just saw a shit angle pic of a guy surfing but is beautiful just because there was the northern lights behind lol.
Harshest environments in the world lol u havent been 2 canada
....yeah...yeah....and than add some murican spirituality, drama and ignorance....
The storm does NOT bring with it the Northern Lights. Those two things has absolutely nothing with each other to do....
Iceland are NOT located in the Arctic. So make that trip into some documentary of "Arctic experiences" is just nonsense.....
boring
