me, a person who lives in a big city, watching this while enjoying my wrap full of store-bought hummus, veggies, mushrooms, canned beans, and drinking store bought iced tea: ..haha yeah gardens are cool
I live in a big city too and am lucky enough to have a small balcony. I grow my own herbs and tomatoes in the summer, that's more than enough gardening for me. 😂
On the menu tonight: green juice, organic micro greens (from Martha’s greenhouse, of course), a sprinkle of Goop powder and absolutely NO CARBS. Cheers 🍷😉
As someone who grew up on a peacock farm...the cops will get called. Peacocks either sound like human women being murdered or cats being strangled. Zero in between.
Gettin' those liquid carbs in at the end of the day. She made a directed point when she emphasized "...but I NEVER drink alone". As a substance misuse healthcare provider, THAT statement says the most. While not true in every case, drinking alone is associated with alcohol substance misuse, and she KNOWS this. She had to rationalize the wine bottles and hard liquor beverage intake with that clarifying statement. Point noted on her intake assessment.
I think Martha forgets one small detail when she says "I grow my own vegetables, I check on my animals" ... do YOU do it, or do you have people working for you, Martha? Growing vegetables and tending animals takes work and time. Edit: Maybe my comment sounded a bit spiteful, and I thank you all your responses, I stand corrected.
She's a known workaholic but I'd imagine at 79 she probably has a whole working crew do that. But hell my old boss is 81 and he still works his entire farm as a side project on the weekends 😱 while I can barely leave the house 🤣😂
The pigeons are from 4 different countries... likely countries where her other bougie friends live. Pigeon direct messaging is so bougie, because an iPhone text message is so plebeian.
As privileged as it is to have her own entire greenhouse, I must say I am JEALOUS lol. Truthfully, no fruits and veg taste as delicious than organic and homegrown ones and being able to grow your own is AWESOME. It’s also a lot more sustainable! If you have direct sunlight, you can even grow a couple little things on your windowsill and it’ll surely taste awesome. Martha is unrelatable but kinda super awesome haha. (And just to say, there’s nothing wrong with frozen/canned veg/fruit and if that’s what you can afford and what’s easiest, go you!)
"Privileged" is hardly the correct word for someone who worked their way up from a Polish, immigrant, lower-middle class upbringing, to a net worth of 400 million dollars. There are tons of youtube videos of homesteader types building their own greenhouses and raising tomatoes or exotic fruits. One can purchase a greenhouse kit from wayfair.com for a couple hundred dollars.
Personally I don't really get offended by interviews or comments by celebs like this bc I just think about the fact that they have more money then they know what to do with, so it's gotta go somewhere. The dead look in their eyes talking about juices also helps...
I think it’s funny that you gripe about her not being relatable... this is Martha Stewart. I don’t feel lazy because she literally lives on a farm/ranch. I bet if tuna salad taste how Martha makes it, I might eat it.
I personally didn’t find Abbey to be very gripe-y, her critiques seem to fit her intro of these videos being strictly for educational and entertainment purposes for the general public. I found the video to have a good balance of humor (aka eye-rolls at the “multi-millionaire” of it all) and offering info to the people watching (such as the difference between grass-fed vs other butter). I got the vibe she’s a big Martha fan actually and kinda lives for Martha’s over the top energy 😂
I don't think she was griping, she was simply pointing out the obvious. Martha is so next level bougie it could be satire. Some people could watch this and feel discouraged or like they are inferior because they can't eat like this. This is why celebrities and Hollywood need to check their privilege. Not everyone realizes that they may as well live on a different planet.
@@whiteoleander-em Yes but as Abby says if you have the critical thinking skills your life can be just as happy and healthy and you don't need to feel inferior.
Haha I love how she refers to it as her farm where she grows things....how about a farm where she hires other people to grow things. Acknowledge your staff Martha! Driving around to look at your animals in the am doesn't sound like cleaning stalls and feeding animals. I'm glad she is so passionate about her life and seems to derive joy from it but let's acknowledge folks where acknowledgment is due.
Martha does quite a bit of the work herself. However, if you watch interviews with her, she does talk about all the people who work for her business as well as her housekeepers.
She know damn well we ain’t got black truffles “lying around” I laughed so hard. She said “y’all gone pay for me going to prison for insider trading peasants.” I love it! And the appropriate wine and vodka statement and something in her vodka from her own garden. Yasss!!!
I can't help but wonder if the reason she goes lower carb is because she's always being sent bread and pastries and going out to restaurants where she's trying loads of different foods and just doesn't get hungry/prefers to eat light at home because of it.
This is what I picked right at the beggining - as a biochemistry major I had last semester a toxicology lectures and let me tell you -if I lived in USA I would mostly grow my own veggies. The process of making a chemical compound legislatively marked as toxic or harmful is expensive and rather long there. The new fertilisers are usually not very well clinically tested before used and many get banned (at least here in Europe) within few years. So many critical chemicals are still at the USA market. I would not look at veggies there from the nutritional point of view but from the view of toxicity. I am in no way a toxigologist, but we discussed this matter in lectures and I rather clarify it. It's not like "in Europe we don't have fertilisers and chemically treated fruit and veggies" - yes we do, but some that were years ago banned here due to the toxicity are still used in the USA. Take it how you want it, I just felt like maybe Martha knows that too and that might be her 🤷♀️ reason
It's funny how she brags about the farmer life as if it's something elite, whilst this used to be something for the hard working low class... XD Times have changed he.

Is eating the rich still nutritous when consumed with frozen vegetables instead of fresh? Asking for a friend. EDIT: SHE'S MAKING A SMOOTHIE INCLUDING ORANGE SKIN? SKIN?! WHAT?!
Hello, not Abby but many a nutrition professional has said yes. In fact it's often a little more nutritious when it comes to nutrients that degrade over time like vitamin C. Canned is not as nutritious as fresh for certain nutrients, but wildly more nutritious than no vegetables.
It's actually pretty good. I blend a cup of grapes and half a lemon (skin on) most mornings just to get my fruit in since I don't like it. The skin of most citrus tastes fine blended and it's healthier / less wasteful. It just makes my grape lemon juice a bit more frothy.
@@midnight3946 Oh, my bad! I've seen this question posed seriously before and my impulse is to always jump in and say "Yes! Eat whatever veggies you can afford!"
I used to believe this because of celebrities like this. Now I’m all about the frozen veggies! They are so much cheaper too! And so nice to just throw in a bag into stir fry or something.
@@HannahHappyHomemaker I can buy it in my local supermarket here in London for £1.80 (standard, full price). Google says $5 is about £3.60, so it's half the price here and often on offer. That's about as cheap as you can get without buying store own brand butter. It'll cost about the same in Northern Ireland, maybe a little cheaper in Ireland.
I was really assuming we’d see Martha do a lot more cooking/ baking in her everyday life! If I had the skill set and the luxury of all the food in the world, I think I’d spend a lot more time in the kitchen!!
Her diet and how she describe the food/ingredients is actually pretty comparable to a lot of people in Silicon Valley/ Bay Area. Where people do have black truffle in their pantry. I wouldn’t say Kerrygold is high end. You can get them from Costco. Personally I don’t think her food is “bougie” or that she is flexing it’s just How she prefers to eat. It’s funny the word Boujie originated from Bourgeoisie which means upper middle class not high class. Martha Steward is all about sustainability and her diet reflects that. Marine stewardship has a free app and great info on their site that tell you what seafood to avoid based on mercury and sustainability. I wish her or you would’ve talk more about pastured raised animals. MS is actually more about pastured raised than organic. But it’s just easier to say organic then have to explain pastured raised. She also talks about frozen vegetables quite often in her shows. But she live on a farm, in her case HER fresh veggie IS actually better in all sense. Low carbon footprint, picked fresh. She even makes her compost for her garden. I like her diet! Btw she has a kick ass Mac and cheese recipe that is sooooo good.
You’re so right about the definition of Bourgeoisie. It’s just another example of words gaining different meanings over the decades. But I was definitely confused at first when I saw this word being thrown around describing Martha.
Actually, our vegetables are grown in monocultures which deplete soil of its nutrients so over time our food becomes less and less nutrious.... sooo im on marthas side on this one
Love your videos Abbey however I wanted to chime in for a thought about your critique of Martha's day not being relatable. For many of us, your home gym with a mural, ability to order expensive take-out several times a week, large home in Toronto, and nanny is not relatable either. But we still watch you and enjoy your content. I just think critiquing a celebrity (an admittedly very wealthy well one) for having a lavish lifestyle doesn't really sit right when your content clearly demonstrates your very comfortable position.
Honestly I think it’s remarkable what she has done, and is doing. She is following her passions. Loves growing fruits and vegetables loves having animals living at her farm. Having so much beauty around her is I Think just very beautiful.
Not diet related but, I would love to see Martha’s exercise routine. I remember she was on Wendy Williams talking about how her trainer has her doing some exercises on one leg to improve balance. And improving balance is a big deal as we age. When you fall it can be very serious. And it’s even more common for women to have leg issues as we get older.
Every time I hear Martha talk I just think about her daughter Alexis. She used to have a show where she would watch episodes of her moms show and like, comment on it and attempt the crafts. It was hilarious to hear her give the reality from her perspective, way more down to earth 😂
It was called "Whatever, Martha!" and it was hilarious. Alexis and her best friend, Jennifer Koppelman Hutt, would sit there and mock old episodes of Martha's shows. Alexis would roll her eyes and make comments about how unrealistic Martha was or she'd mention some crazy childhood memory. It was basically a weekly Martha roast but it was done in a very cute way with no malice and had Martha's full approval. I recorded them all onto DVDs because I knew they would be classics one day. However, you can watch them on RUclips right now.
This is 100% unattainable and 100% unapologetic and EXACTLY why I love Martha. Martha doesn't apologize and that is some BOSS shit all women need to adopt. I think that is why she and Snoop get along. If a rapper isn't anything else they all think they are the best, worthy, opulent, and unapologetic.
The only thing about organic, is supposed to be about avoiding unneccessary peticide/herbicide/fungicide consumption. I think it would be a lovely healthg goal to have more people interested in growing their own food. Great excercize and a great appreciation for all the hard work that goes into all the food we ever bought from the grocery store.
I think people may be interested, but due to their life circumstances, many cannot. Many people just don't have the space, time, and resources to do it.
I myself love to grow a (part of) the vegetables I eat in my little vegetable plot (it really has a positive effect on my mental health). But there have been a few studies that show that in a lot of places own-grown vegetables don't contain significantly less pesticides even if you don't use them in your garden - a lot of those substances have leeched into the ground from intensive agriculture. So while I like gardening a lot, it's not necessarily a lot healthier to grow your own stuff.
These videos are moving further from "this is untrue and I want to help you" to "I personally can't relate so it's bad" or the dreaded "do people not watch my channel" think I'm going to have to go back to the older videos to get my fix.
When she said ‘if you have black truffles laying around’ I fell out 😂😂 Sure Martha, we have $200 truffles laying around in our kitchen. I love her. She’s so bougie and doesn’t care to express it lol
A note on the organic dairy- I went vegan at 16 and am now 22 and weigh within 5 pounds of what I did when I started, but my breasts have shrunk pretty dramatically. Although it's not a scientific experiment in any way, I absolutely think that my change in breast size is directly related to no longer consuming dairy products and it super weirds me out that a food product had had that affect on my body
Omg I’m excited to watch! You should review Kylie Ross’s what I eat in a day bc she’s a former college athlete and says some questionable things about what people should be eating
For some reason, I feel so inadequate, now. Lol I almost died when she said “Italian Tuna” and 🤣🤣 black truffles ‘lying around.’ Whelp at least she stayed on brand.

i love how Martha uses lots of enhancing words before describing her foods like "fresh" fruit and "plump" chicken. imagine how basic her diet would sound if she just stated her foods generally 🤣 it reminds me of when Nigella was describing how to make toast!?
😂true!
Or tyra going on about a damn bagel and cream cheese. It's an effing bagel tyra we get it! We don't need a 20 minute rendition of how you assembled and ate the thing! People and their extra selves drive me nutty! Lol

I gotta say- as an Irish person, hearing Kerrygold being called a "luxury butter" makes me laugh XD
😂it is here in North America!
for me it‘s the cheap butter I buy whenever I go to germany and store in my freezer because swiss butter is too pricey 😂😂😂
Yes! It's cheap in the UK. No way would it be considered luxury.
Its also the most luxurious butter you can buy in the supermarket in the Netherlands!

She makes up her calories in alcohol at the end of the day! Lol
Was about to comment the same! Not very healthy though...
At 79 I think you do you Martha
The time I watched her get tipsy " tasting " beer got me thinking this. 😂
If you look that healthy at 79, you’re doing something right.
Well, does it matter?

Yup!

@@frostyskeletons8950 Got that vibe too, well said
I don't think she was griping, she was simply pointing out the obvious.
Isn't paying her staff enough? Do we need to go around thanking everyone we pay now? Plus, how do you know she doesn't actually enjoy farming?
Possibly!

@@Psychwriteify I know, I made a joke. Still, thank you for your answer😅
It's actually pretty good. I blend a cup of grapes and half a lemon (skin on) most mornings just to get my fruit in since I don't like it. The skin of most citrus tastes fine blended and it's healthier / less wasteful. It just makes my grape lemon juice a bit more frothy.

Oh wow. Kerrygold is an influencer butter??? That is so strange.
It's a staple/basic butter in Ireland 😂
It's one of the only butters made from grass-fed cows that we can find at most major supermarkets in the US. We take horrible care of our cows here.
Interesting!
Laughing all the way to my local discount supermarket where I buy Kerrygold because its the cheapest one here in Germany.
How much does it cost in Ireland?? It’s $5 for 8oz at my local store vs $3.50-$4 for 16oz for other buttersn
Yess! I requested this😂 So excited you’ve done this one❤️
I hope you enjoy it!
I was really assuming we’d see Martha do a lot more cooking/ baking in her everyday life! If I had the skill set and the luxury of all the food in the world, I think I’d spend a lot more time in the kitchen!!
Yes that's true too!
This is one of the best channels on RUclips!!! So grateful that I found it.
Love that you even mention the socioeconomic side of these diets.
Thank you! I'm so glad that's helpful
Thank you for all of that helpful information!
You’re so right about the definition of Bourgeoisie. It’s just another example of words gaining different meanings over the decades. But I was definitely confused at first when I saw this word being thrown around describing Martha.
When you watch Abby so much that every time you eat throughout the day, you have a vision of Abby narrating each meal.
i cannot believe she is 79 like what a queen

To me trying to buy organic is less about getting more nutrition and more about reducing unnecessary chemicals, sprays, fertilisers, insecticides etc
"if you just have some black truffles lying around" - I'm DEAD!
