    First off, your painting is beautiful! I really enjoyed watching the piece unfold, especially given the limited palette! Some folks may not see the point of a palette this small, but for those of us who commonly carry a palette in an Altoids tin, this is a game changer for portable palettes. I keep a palette and small sketchbook in my lunch bag for work and while I may not get to use it every day, on the days when I do, this would be such a convenient tool to take with me. As it is, I currently use the original Portable Painter Palette, which I refabricated to hold 14-colors instead of 12, so for me, it still maintains its functionality for my end-use. This micro version would be ideal to keep in a car or in a backpack or even in an office desk. I think it's great and really enjoyed your perspective, demo, and discussion! Thank you, my friend, and I hope you are doing well and staying healthy! Best wishes ~ Mark

      Hi, Mark! Thank you so much! I love the challenge of a limited palette, especially when painting from reference. And I completely agree with you, a palette this small made to house paints is a game-changer. The Altoids tin works, but it's not the same. No mixing area, no container for a bit of water... The original Portable Painter is also quite useful, just much bigger than the mini XD (It's like a "Transformer" for artists! LOL)
      I'm curious if you'll be getting this palette?

    Cute, but I kind of don't see the point. My Rembrandt 12-set is small, not heavy, and has sufficient mixing space. I guess if you were going hiking in the Rockies and wanted as little weight as possible, something like this would be perfect. I've got the Sennelier Mini, which is about the size of an Altoids tin. I've managed to squeeze in 3 additional Da Vinci colors for more variety. In Houston Texas, the number of months you even want to think about going plein air is 4-5. The other months, your sweat would just drip on the paper, good only if you're looking for the salt effects ; ) Was thinking about going plein air in the spring, after allergy season, but then the pandemic struck...sigh...eventually (pushing 70, I'm being as cautious as possible), I hope to go out. Definitely need the outdoor practice.

      I think the plastic material can be appealing in certain conditions... (if it floats? No chance of losing the palette in a canoe flip or something!) It also won't rust, so that can be practical. Less cold to hold than metal... But I mean, both palettes are fine as a travel palette. It really just depends on the needs of the situation!
      (With COVID, we can't be too cautious! And being careful now means that things will settle sooner, too :) )

    Small palettes are so cute, but they're pretty small so that means theres a higher chance that i might lose or misplace it 😅 also i usually prefer more mixing space. If this had an accordion style mixing space that pulled out into additional 2-3 square mixing spaces on each side, then that'd be dandy. Maybe even when assembled back, it forms a cube haha

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  3 года назад +4

      This one has a little hole in one of the plastic parts to attach a lanyard of some sort, so that's quite handy! Maybe an elastic to secure the lid (in case of a drop) and that would be quite literally attached to you ;)
      The clover palette, if I remember well, is square and has four sides that you overlap when closed and open up when accessing the paints. Not accordion, but quite interesting too!

    I just bought that paint set last night so it's nice to see swatches. A good starting point for brown is red+green, and grey is purple+yellow.

    Ohhh the palette is so tiny and petit, it's cute, it's very cute! Honestly I think the only thing about it that I'm not too into aside from my general "plastic anxiety" is that the plain white outside isn't particularly appealing to look at- but I guess it'd be easy to custom paint with a lil bit of sanding an acrylic paints lol

    I'm not a fan of water brushes, either. This is a lovely review. The mini palette seems good quality, but like you pointed out, the palette of only part of what you'd need to take with you painting en plein air.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  3 года назад +2

      Yes! I always need water in a bottle or something anyway, so it's a matter of total space dedicated to art supplies XD
      I love having options (even if I don't really go out these days...)

    Great review. I'm not sure what to think about the Micro painter. While I like small cute palettes, I'm not sure about the issue, that you have to take it fully apart and reassemble it to paint, while there are other small palettes out there, which you just can open. It's very small and well made though and looks nice.
    I really like that you've put the primaries inside, so it's a very versatile tiny palette now. :) (And the paints look so good!)

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  3 года назад

      Thank you! :)
      It's definitely not a "quick set palette" but it's nice to have a small travel palette that's all plastic. I always feel awful when I drop metal palettes... Though I would still wrap an elastic or two around the Micro Painter so that there aren't any pieces that fly out if I were to drop it!

    Not a big fan of such pallets. I feel like it's additional plastic added to the pile. I'd rather have a mint tin with watercolors in it... BUT... I came here to see you painting. I had my coffee and you added some good vibes to my morning. Thank you!

    Hey Eve! lovely review! but I wondered why you didn't put that it's also a review of the DS primary set on the title? since you're reviewing two different things (the Portable Painter Micro and the DS paint set), wouldn't that make it easier for people who want to find the paint review as well if the title had that information? just wondering... anyway, thanks for the review!

      Hi Lusine! I've talked about the DS paint set before, I think. It was also featured in my previous review. I really wanted to focus more on the palette here rather than the colors. :)
