  • Today we will have a look at the latest offering from The Portable Painter, the Portable Painter Micro! www.portablepa...
The original portable painter is my favorite travel palette. I love everything about it and it accompanies me on all of my outdoor painting adventures. The main reason I love it is because there are two water buckets that attach to the sides making legs for my palette that can keep my paint up high off a sandy beach, or can rest on the arm of an Adirondack chair or rest on my leg as I paint from a Kayak or canoe. This is the original I recommend 100% shrsl.com/2d883
The Micro is much smaller and comes with 6 half pans that you can fil with the paint of your choosing. They also make packs of extra half and full pans so you can have 1 full pan and 4 half pans or 2 full pans and two half pans is it works out better than having the original 6 for you. The extras are also handy if you want to swap out pans and rearrange them. All other half and full pans I tried from other manufactures fit in the micro palette so purchasing the extras from a portable painter aren't necessary and that also means that if you have a collection of pans already you can put them in the micro as you like. No need to fill more pans, nice!
The palette can be arranged for left or right-hand use. For me holding the palette with water in it will take some getting used to, I prefer it to sit on a table and it takes so little space it would be great for painting in crowded cafes or classes (on small projects.)

I just got mine! Love it, actually I have both. Brilliant designs, the micro will be great in my purse when I’m stuck waiting somewhere. Probably with water brush

Hi Lindsey. Good Morning from Florida. Thank you, for introducing us to this new product. I’ve been very unwell since November. Now July. Zero ability to craft . I have been very attracted to learning watercolor. To my list of things I do. Your time that you give so freely is much appreciated. Hugs 🤗.

I wouldn't bother trying to juggle the full water pot. Just take it off and set it on the table.

Ingenious design, so cute! I love tiny palettes. Seems like it would be nice for walks if you want minimal stuff to carry.

Looks awkward with the water, I think I'd put the water tub separate and down. And just hold the paint pallette part. I just know I'd spill it

I have the 12 pan portable painter and I love it! I walk with a backpack so I can stop and sit and sketch my views on my walk, then sit and have coffee and or lunch and either sketch my photos or paint my sketches, so handy having the portable pallets, highly recommend them.

It’s adorable!! I’d probably use it with a water brush and keep the water compartment for mixing colours

It's adorable! 😊 It would definitely be handy to stick in the car! Love the larger one too! I agree, I like having 2 water buckets! Thanks for sharing Lindsay! 🌻

I'd like to see the portable painter mirco next to the smaller metal tins. (like DaVincis 6 pansets or the schmicke 9pan set.) for size comparison and see the different case uses for each!

I'm personally not a fan of products that force you to buy their "special " version of something just for it to functions ( the pans) but I can see why these are popular, however I prefer to use water brushes when traveling and have a squeeze bottle of fresh water when they start to run out , because i never know what to do with the dirty water when I am done aha.

I've been looking at this thing for months, going back and forth 😂 it's available at Jackson's now, but I still haven't decided.
I'll probably end up getting it just so I can get over it, but there are design choices here that I know would really annoy me. The thickness, for one, and I prefer deeper water containers rather than the wide and shallow one featured here. And I do prefer two water cups. It's a nifty idea, though!
I've got a small two compartment water container I got on Wish which is small enough that I'd rather take that and my Qor Mini palette. Take out the silicone insert and the Qor Mini will hold quite a lot, while still having a lot of mixing space in the lid.

Mine are on the way! The pan sizes for the original Portable Painters were specifically matches for Winsor & Newton pans, so quite curious that they would change that.

I never know what to do with the dirty water when i paint outside... So I take steps to remove the need for it. I use brushes with water reservoirs, and wet wipes to get the worst off before color changes. You can throw tissues in a public bin, but not dirty water - or at least you shouldn't.

  • @spiritsjoy

Can you omit the water pot and it still close for less bulk? I think for my needs i would just use a water brush. Or maybe use the water pot for a rag to wipe my water brush.

I was thinking I might be inclined to put the water in the centre - which means I couldn't use the thumb hook but it still might be more comfortable. I'd have to give it a try. But it is pretty cute so I'm going to take a look. I do have the original Portable Painter, on your previous recommendation, and love it.

I'm rather frugal myself and those prices seem rather high to me, but then I have never been in a kayak much less tried to paint in one. I guess it depends on what you do with it.
