Hey guys! So this review I made a while back and after rewatching it, I think I've come across as a lot more negative than I remembered. My apologies. Ep. III is a great watch. Definitely has issues, but the good outweighs the bad. And I think I should've talked more about the good aspects here.

Never forget that our beloved Roger Ebert gave Episode III a 3.5/4 stars lol granted it’s got issues yes but it’s definitely the best prequel
And now that LEGO Skywalker Saga is out, I finally was able to figure out what Hayden’s biggest acting flaw as Anakin was versus voice actor Matt Lanter - Matt does emphasis, buildup, and intonation better than Hayden. Granted yes I’m comparing a live action vs voice actor but his voice sounds is crucial to believing acting chops and emotions.
And in defense of the prequel dialogue, the originals didn’t have the best dialogue either.

27:04 Honestly, Anakin becoming Palpatine's acolyte does make some sense because:
    1) He already began flirting with the Dark Side in the previous movie
    2) He thinks the Jedi are corrupt based on their judgments
3)He believes his true potential has already been held back
    4) Palpatine's manipulation has only enforced Anakin's idea of that
    5) Not only does he want to save Padme's life, but he thinks hunting down the Jedi would do the galaxy a favor
Anakin already had some strong tension between himself and the Jedi Order, with them taking him away from his mother and Mace Windu refusing to put Palpatine on trial because he is too dangerous to be left alive. He already thinks the Jedi were "evil", it's just that he now has the opportune moment to kill them, but you can still see the strain and regret in his eyes from a man who knows their is no turning back. Just like any other Force User, he is distracted from his original goal as he dives deeper into the Dark Side, being mentally and physically warped, changing his identity through the Force and destroying his life, and having nothing else to live for except to serve his emperor and to help bring "justice" across the galaxy upon those who are weak. It is a pretty tragic story about a man saving someone he isn't supposed to be married to and succumbing to the powerful effects of the most powerful Sith Lord the galaxy has ever seen. He has completely embraced the Dark Side.

    Obi-Wan doesn't need to be on the high ground, the high ground just needs to exist within the battle; Obi-Wan knows that when he has the low ground, he really has the high ground, from a certain point of view;
    Look at his battle record:
    Maul: Has low ground, wins
    Dooku: No high ground, loses
Dooku rematch: No high ground, loses
    Grevious: Has low ground, wins
    Vader: Has high ground, wins
Vader rematch: No high ground, loses
Obi-Wan with the high/low ground is canonically the most powerful Jedi. This is fact. Had Yoda not denied his request to battle The Senate with typical Jedi arrogance, Obi-Wan could have defeated Palpatine in the Senate building, which housed a variety of different altitudes; this was designed so that the Chancellor could always have the moral high ground in political debates. But Obi-wan didn't fight The Senate, and Yoda soon learned that you can't cleave the Sheev in a normal 1v1.
Yoda is shorter than virtually every other fighter, which gives him a permanent low-ground disadvantage; however, his saber-fighting style utilizes a flipping-heavy technique in order to negate this weakness for a temporary window. You'll notice that, as he falls from the central podium in The Senate's building, he immediately retreats, knowing that he can never hold the high ground in this duel. You'll also notice that, while training Luke, he rides on him like a mount, to gain the intellectual high ground and accelerate Luke's training. Obi-Wan's defensive Form III lightsaber style synergizes with his careful military maneuvers; as he only strikes when prepared, he can always hold the strategic high ground. You'll come to realize that Commander Cody's artillery strike failed against Obi-Wan, when hundreds of Jedi were killed in similar attacks. Cody failed to grasp the strategic situation, as the Jedi Master's elevation was superior to his by hundreds of meters, making him virtually unkillable. Had Cody taken his time and engaged the Jedi on even terrain, he could have possibly succeeded. Obi-Wan then retreated under the surface of the lake, so that he could maintain the topographical low/high ground. In RotS, you'll notice that all the Jedi killed were on level ground with the clones, thereby assuring their demise.
As we all know, spinning is a good trick. However, only the Chosen one can spin outside of a starfighter. Palpatine tried spinning, but he lost due to this technique (but this was intentional, as losing gave him the emotional high ground when Anakin arrived). The reason for this is that spinning provides a yin-yang approach to combat (based in Eastern philosophy on balance), giving the spinner the high ground from above and below. Only the Chosen One can master the spin, as it is their destiny to maintain balance in the universe. This is why Obi-Wan was so emotional after defeating Vader on Mustafar; he expected to lose the high ground to the spin, but Anakin fell to the dark side and could no longer use his signature trick, becoming the very thing he swore to destroy.
Anakin doesn't hate sand for the reasons he told Padme; all Jedi hate sand, as the battlefield can rapidly change between low and high ground on multiple vectors, so your perspective must be from a certain three-dimensional point of view in order to comprehend who holds the high ground. This is the only reason why Obi-Wan killed Maul in Rebels. This is also why Obi-Wan hates flying; there is no gravity in space, therefore there is no high or low ground from any frame of reference (This also negates the spinning trick).
It took the Tusken Raiders years of conflict against Old Ben Kenobi to grasp his superiority in terrain advantage, as you see them visibly flee in ANH when they realize he holds the low (inverse-high) ground. Additionally, Obi-Wan's victory in the cantina against the drunkard was assured, as he held the temperamental high ground, his actions more calculated and well-thought than the alcoholic, who was so uncivilized.
In ANH, Vader proves his newfound mastery by engaging Obi on perfectly even ground. However, Obi-Wan intentionally sacrifices himself on the Death Star, so that he could train Luke from a higher plane of existence, thereby giving him the metaphysical high ground.
Why was Vader so invested in the construction and maintenance of the Death Star? Because he knows Obi-wan can't have the high ground if there's no ground left.
As seen through the events of the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan was known to be on friendly terms with Senator Organa, whose homeworld held large quantities of mountainous terrain, the perfect habitat for a Jedi Master. Grand Moff Tarkin was already in position to destroy Alderaan as a first target, as the distance from Scarif to Alderaan was too vast to reach between the escape and recapture of the Tantive IV, even at 1.0 lightspeed. Alderaan had been the initial target all along, as Obi-Wan with the high ground was the primary threat to the Death Star. How? Because a moon-sized space station would have some form of gravitational pull, thereby negating Obi-Wan's zero-gravity weakness; Obi-Wan with the perpetual high-ground in a low-orbit starfighter would easily be able to fire proton torpedoes through a ventilation shaft, although the Empire was uncertain of the specific weakness of the Death Star planned by Galen Erso (who was a good friend).
In Return of the Jedi, you can see that the Throne Room contains a variety of different altitudes; Palpatine placed these there to ensure Vader's defeat. However, Sheev failed to realize that his weakness was no ground, and should have covered that useless gaping pit which does nothing.
A common misconception is the idea of a 'prostrate position' version of the high ground, wherein Obi-Wan lies flat on his back, giving him tactical superiority from his point of view. However, this strategy is futile, as for the high ground to come into effect, there must be a differential between parties on both the x-axis and y-axis to a moderately significant variation from both absolutes (Angles only a Sith would deal in.). For Obi-Wan's high ground powers to have full effect, he must stand between 15 and 75 degrees (π/12 to 5π/12 radians) diagonal from his opponent(s) on any quadrant of the trigonometric circle.
In conclusion, Obi-wan abuses spatial relativity and Taoist doctrine in order to always invoke his high-ground powers.

I honestly have no dislike towards how Padme Amidala died. Yeah, a strong woman losing the will to live as a cause of death IS bullshit, but Padme didn’t actually lose the will to live. She DID die of a broken heart. And people CAN die of broken hearts as a result of immense stress weakening heart muscles...
    In Padme’s case....
    - She witnessed the Republic she stood and fought for turn into a militaristic tyranny
    - She discovered the terrifying truth that her husband is now a murderous monster
    - She was Force-choked by him
    - She has to endure the stress of giving birth to 2 twins at the same time
It really was a Shakespearean death.
As for Leia remembering who her REAL mother was, it still makes sense. Through the Force bond to her mother, Leia remembered “images, really. Feelings” of her mother and felt her emotions. She remembered Padme as a “kind but sad” woman.
Leia’s use of the Force was more focused towards empathy and emotions, while Luke was more geared towards skill and power. That’s how Leia was able to sense Luke was in danger and rescue him.
TLDR: We kinda have to read between the lines.

    • @rebeccaclark9131
      @rebeccaclark9131 6 лет назад +3

yeah but again it comes with the issue that a perfectly healthy 20-something's just don't die of a broken heart in real life, and they certainly don't die of a broken heart having just given birth (especially in a world of extremely advanced medical capabilities). What i think Lucas should have done is that he should of had Palpatine use 'dark force magic stuff' to give Padme some sort of illness that would be slowly killing her over the course of the movie.
It would make far more sense for Anakin to turn to the dark side if he was literally watching his wife slowly die before his eyes, far more than seeing some vision of her dying in childbirth (a rare way to die in modern days, let alone in the Star Wars universe). It would make more sense as to why she didn't receive any medical help - because of course the 'dark force magic stuff' can't be fixed with practical medicine. It would also give a reason for her lack of proactive-ness in this movie compared to the others (Certainly a better reason than the fact Lucas obviously didn't have much for her to do beyond get pregnant and die). Also it would just be more emotional for the character and the audience to see Padme slowly weaken.
I dunno I just think Padme got a really screwed over in her ultimate demise

    • @SpencieReturns
      @SpencieReturns 6 лет назад

There's a lot of reaching here in an effort to defend shoddy writing. Also Mace was smart enough to bring all the council members that were aveliable at Coruscant.
Also about the battle of Geonosis remember all the members of the CIS council were also present in that arena, if the jedi managed to capture them they could prevent the war from starting

About that though, there were still plenty of Jedi just hanging around the Jedi Academy (look at the Order 66 scene to see them all). Surely Mace could've taken a few of those guys. Those 3 council members were also already with Mace before Anakin speaks to him. He just took what Jedi were already with him. I think he really should've rounded up some more cavalry. Or hell, why not bring some clone troopers along? I mean they would've turned on Mace of course, but he wouldn't have known that.

      The Unusual Suspect
I think its because those jedi were not that strong, the fighters were probably already off Coruscant and those who were left inside the temple were padawans,younglings,librarians/lore keepers, medics etc. Plus trying to deside which ones would be the best to bring along while at the same time explaining to them what's going on would take time ,it would complicate things and cause chaos. And the thing about the clones is that they are made to obey the galactic senate and Palpatine is its head, what was Mace going to say to them? "hey guys come and help me kill your boss" they would want to see some evidence and the only thing that Mace had was Anakins words.
Also holly shit thanks for answering my comment

There's actually a good reason Obi-Wan alone was sent to fight Grievous, he's an extremely defensive fighter. Obi-wan isn't actually very powerful as a Jedi, he's simply as good as he is through sheer determination and persistence, and he's aware of this, so after witnessing his master die, he resolved to master Soresu, the defensive form, which actually makes him a perfect Jedi to fight Grievous. This is simply because Grievous relies on overwhelming offence and nothing more than that to kill Jedi, Obi-wan being as defensive a fighter as he is can hold him at bay long enough to find a crack in his technique and capitalise on it. This is the basis of Obi-wan's fighting, taking whatever his enemy has until they reveal a weakness, and uses skill and precision to dispatch of his foe once he's discovered this weakness. Obi-wan is quite literally a tank, well... in the videogame sense of the word anyway, he can tank a lot of damage, but he doesn't have a giant canon that can level a building, unless you count the force anyway.

Also the birth of Darth Vader could also be interpreted as a buildup, starting with the moment Anakin is christened as a Sith Lord.
Anakin had just witnessed a front row demonstration of the powers of the dark side. Disobeying would’ve meant death for him and his family. He had to commit those deeds - like killing children - but you can tell on Mustafar, he is filled with shame regret about everything he’s done. Anakin relishes the power of the dark side, however, when he’s murdering the Separatist Council. His yellow eyes signify he’s become consumed and has lost himself to the dark side.

Ok but imagine this- Say they kept the Padme-Anakin storyline, but actually implemented Anakin's lust for power. At the beginning of the movie (or better yet in AotC) we find out Padme is pregnant, and Anakin reveals this to Obi-Wan. What? AstroFiction, you're crazier than George Lucas and the Jedi! Think of this, throughout the movie, Anakin would struggle with various decisions that would end to a faster end to the clone wars. Send HIM to Utapau! Have his interactions with Obi-Wan unveil that he wants to end the war and bring "peace and prosperity" for his children, even though he knows it's wrong. Show he actually cares about the jedi, his friends, and his future family, but believes the ends justify the means. Have him ACTUALLY TELL Obi wan he wants to give his saber to his son one day, but he knows he can't ever do that because he is betraying the jedi. Obi wan is obviously forced to cast him out, and Anakin later returns as vader, (again this would be better if the former section of this starts in AotC) to decimate the jedi. We have a proper fight between them where obi wan wins, but only just barely. Maybe padme kills herself or something too to keep ani off the scent of his son (he doesnt know about leia I think)

Love this review, but a few things.
1, Anakin and Obi-wan weren’t in a public hallway; they were in the Jedi temple. Only Jedi, staff, and special visitors are allowed in there; it’s not open to the public.
2, why would Anakin get a new lightsaber immediately after turning to the Dark Side? He would have to go through the whole process of building a lightsaber, which would take a while. He and Palpatine still had work to do. It makes sense for Anakin to keep using his lightsaber until things have settled down for him and Palpatine.
3, yes, Anakin’s lightsaber was used to kill children, but the lightsaber itself didn’t do that; Anakin did. If you lay a lightsaber on a table and tell it to kill someone, will it? No. It’ll just lay there; it’s an inanimate object. What matters is the wielder, not the weapon itself. Luke and Rey can give the weapon a new reputation.
4, We’ve clearly seen that Anakin still has good in him. Luke could sense that Vader was having an inner turmoil in the original trilogy. He showed Luke mercy by not killing him in Empire. In this movie, Anakin was crying on the balcony after killing the Separatist leaders. He wasn’t proud of anything he was doing, and he knew inside that everything he was doing was wrong. I’m not saying that makes up for everything Vader did; I’m just saying that it shows he still has a level of humanity
5, while I agree with you that Yoda needing a cane should be the result of an injury, there is an explanation as to why he can move the way he does. He uses the Force to temporarily increase his dexterity and vitality. We’ve seen the Jedi do that. Yoda has to do it in order to fight with a lightsaber, because of his old age.
6, when Leia said that her mother died when she was very young, she meant her adoptive mother. Neither she nor Luke ever got to know Padme. She grew up thinking Bail Organa and his wife were her real parents

    • @TheUnusualSuspect
      @TheUnusualSuspect  7 лет назад +13

      1. But they chose not to give Anakin the assignment in session. Which means they wanted as few Jedi to know about it as possible. Hence talking about it in a place where other people could be in earshot is silly. AND the Jedi temple has security cameras. We see them later in the movie.
      2. But again, the saber was used to kill children. Giving Luke it is horrifying. Besides, Anakin could have used another saber. Maybe Palpatine has a spare? Easy enough to get a new one. Hell, Palpatine had been planning on turning Anakin for a while. Seems very likely he would have a new lightsaber ready for him.
      3. Well gonna have to agree to disagree there. If someone gave me a weapon that was used to murder children, I would MOST CERTAINLY refuse it.
      4. But think about it in a real world context. What he did is something that you just could not forgive in the real world. I don't care how much humanity he has him in; someone who has done all this DOES NOT deserve a 2nd chance. No matter what he does to make up for it. Again, it's like someone saying Hitler has humanity still in him. Er.... no.
      5. Yeah, I know about that. All I'm saying is that my idea would be a SIMPLER explanation.
      6. But Luke asks specifically about her "REAL" Mother. And there is nothing in the movies to suggest Leia was lied to about her true parents. True, Legends may explain this but that isn't canon.

    • @rhettdilley
      @rhettdilley 7 лет назад +7

      The Unusual Suspect
1, I totally agree that they should have discussed it somewhere more private; wasn’t arguing that. I was just responding to calling it a public hallway. If you had said something along the lines of “where other people can hear you,” I wouldn’t have said anything. Maybe I was being a little too knit-picky.
2, Force users typically just have one lightsaber. There are some exceptions, of course, but they typically just have one to call their own. I doubt he would have a spare. He wouldn’t just make one for Anakin because it doesn’t work that way for Sith. In the current Darth Vader comic (which is canon), Sidious sends Vader on a mission to make a new lightsaber. The Sith are supposed to take a Kyber crystal and corrupt it with the Dark Side themselves. They make it clear, “a Sith’s crystal isn’t found; it’s taken.” Making a lightsaber for him would defeat the purpose.
3, to each their own, I guess. I personally think that a weapon can be redeemed, as long as its new wielder uses it for better reasons.
4, I’m not saying Anakin should be forgiven for what he did. Didn’t mean to imply that. Also, not trying to play Devil’s Advocate here, but the movies (as well as other Star Wars media) make it clear that Vader and Anakin are not the same person. When he became Vader, Anakin was practically dead. So you could argue that it wasn’t truly Anakin that did all that stuff; it was Vader. Again, not trying to be Devil’s Advocate; I’m just trying to be fair.
      5, my bad.
6, I’ll give you that. I didn’t consider how much Organa actually told her.
I hope I didn’t give you the vibe that I was trying to argue. You’re one of the best, and funniest critics ever. Keep up the good work

*Fun Life Fact:* This was actually the very first _SW_ film I had seen in cinemas, when I was 12-y.o. when I saw this. Having already seen the Original Trilogy, I was pumped to see the origins of Darth Vader and the rise of the evil Galactic Empire and the Emperor.
Of course, I did feel a bit bored during the middle-act, but when I saw all the Jedi die from Order 66, I was feeling shocked and depressed, especially during the final-act, watching Anakin's downfall and transformation into Vader, and his lightsaber fight with Obi-Wan, it was both exciting and emotional for me to watch. And it was amazing to me when I finally saw Darth Vader appear in this, but I did feel baffled when he only appeared for a few minutes after all that build-up, thanks to my 12-year-old attention span. But when it ended with Owen and Beru, with baby Luke, looking out to the Twin Sunset, it made me want to immediately go home and watch the first 1977 _SW_ film, and I did. ;D
But yea, this movie is flawed, but I do still like it, I love how dark it is when it focuses on Anakin Skywalker's downfall and eventual transformation into the infamous Darth Vader, and I also love the scenes that focuses on Palpatine's rise and his turning the Republic into an Empire, and amazing political thriller-esque sci-fi film where the coup d'état actually succeeds. But yea, _Revenge of the Sith_ is still a great _SW_ Prequel to watch even to this day.

I only disagreement with this video is his talk about Anakin's shift to the dark side. If his turn was based purely on the fact I he wanted the dark side's power just for the sake of power he would have no care for his son and would probably kill him willy-nilly because thing about dark side is that when you have that power anyone else that shows weakness you hate and you want destroyed take Star wars knights of republic and the online MMO old republic, for example there's a mission where a sith warrior finds out his son died but because he viewed his son as weak he didn't care. So I feel having it to where he turns because he wants to save his wife and does all these heinous stuff to increase his dark side power makes a lot more sense later on in the series because then it shows why he actually gave a damn about his kid and didn't want to kill him and actually wanted him to just join in fact and most of the beta comics when he finds out that his son's alive he actually gets extreme rage towards palpatine because of the fact that palpatine said that his wife and kids were dead Darth Vader and Anakin in my opinion are one of the most tragic characters because they did all their awful things all because they wanted to protect the people they cared about and always felt they were too weak to save them so Anakin becomes Darth Vader erasing all that was Anakin to become the most powerful sith of the time but yeah that's my big old monologue.

    • @TheUnusualSuspect

      A) This is the issue I was bringing up. He shouldn't be looking at the ship as he's talking to Padme. Please watch the scene again, he does not notice Obi-Wan until after this moment.
      B) Just because he mentions his name, doesn't mean he's looking at that person. He's talking about Obi-Wan in the 3rd person, he doesn't realize he's on Mustafar yet.

Obi-Wan should be down on his knees in tears? Did you watch any Star Wars prequel all the way through? The Jedi were supposed to be emotionally stunted, their code forbade emotional attachments, of course they come across as weird. There would be a few exceptions - Yoda has lived for centuries, we don't know much about his early life.
Edit: Urgh! Yes. The melodramatic "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" at the end. Even when I was twelve, I knew that that kind of trashy melodrama was no good, even for a school play. I was playing Louis XVI and refused the indignity of yelling "NOOOOO!" when I was sentenced to execution.

I do think revenge of the sith is easily the best of the prequels. The story while paced poorly is great. Palpatine is the best character ever as always. The duels while flawed are good (minus 2 of them). The special effects are great for its time and in my opinion ROTS has the best score of the entire franchise.

It's just a bad movie overall but can see how some people may like it, def not the best star wars movie by far doh and that's not even subjective.

Great review as always Suspect. Your voice sounds a lot smoother and outgoing in this video which I really like, as well you getting a bit more critical at points.
My only issues are the jokes based on movie clip reactions (while some are funny, they tend to drag out and your natural jokes are more enjoyable, hilarious and keep the pacing swift). Other than that, keep it up!

Actually....Obi-Wan jumped down to distract the droids from the Clones. He also knew Grievous had a massive ego and was probably gonna take him out personally. In any case, the only real threat was the staff droids, which he effortlessly took out because he clearly surveyed the area beforehand which would create a challenge to Grievous. A challenge to his ego. Ergo, Grievous attacks Obi-Wan.

All the good stuff about the prequels:
Some of the acting (yes there were some horrible performances but some good too like Ian Mcdiarmid, Ewen Mcgregor, Samuel L Jackson, Christopher Lee and arguably Liam Neeson)
    Order 66
    long panning scenic shots
    Corruption of the Republic
The new unique places and planets
the more vast and lived in vibe
    Costumes and makeup
The clone wars (in the movies and the tv series itself)
    Soundtrack
    Build up and Climax
    The Sith/Dark side
most of the effects (just look at all the ships, planets and space segments)
The action, including battles and pod racing (no criticism)
The parallels to Hitlers rise (though they could have been summarized and there should have been more manipulation shown plus the consequences)
The unease between the republic and the jedi. The republic blame the jedi for the war and think they should have no rights or say but yet still aid them(while you can tell its there it's not as obvious as it should have been)
The irony and corruptness of the jedi (despite what they say, they don't believe in the balance of the force, their to much light side orientated so much so that they have gone down on a darker path to remove emotions and keep their power thus being blinded refusing to admit the sith are back, seen mainly through mace windu who believes himself as the chosen one)
Palplatine pulling strings (again should have been made more obvious but it is cannon that he had something to do with Smi Skywalker's death and he himself killed Padme with the force, just look it up i dont have time to explain)
    the tragic and dark story
the iconic characters (darth maul, Palplatine, Kenobi, Yoda)
All of the dark presence in Anikan seen
marks the end of the clone wars
first epic 30 minutes of revenge of the sith space battle
last minute in revenge of the sith setting up a new hope
Revenge of the sith as a whole
And yes the lightsaber fights, but while some see them as over choreographed there not. These are people who are supernatural, who have extraordinary abilities (the ability of the force) using it constantly through fights to jump high, strike faster, put off their opponent and to predict the near future (where their opponent is going to strike) plus they've been training this for years so it makes sense that they would be extremely efficient at it.
Finally there not rated bad, Revenge of the sith is scored like 0.1% under return of the Jedi (by a combined score of pretty much all critics) and the rest of the prequels are rated decent, never under an average score of 5, most films are worse than them and there is a dedicated fan base to them which are many in numbers, probably more than the haters. But don't get me wrong, almost everyone (me included) share the opinion that the original trilogy is better (though Revenge of the sith is in a lot of peoples top 3) but that doesn't mean that the prequel trilogy is bad.
Good stuff about the Force awakens:
    Musical score
    Some subplots
    effects
    noglistic feeling
Kylo Ren, BB8 Chewie, Han and Rey (rey to extents she was a mary sue)
    last 30 seconds of it
