    Oh my lord this lesson is the most useful lesson I have seen in RUclips for Chinese. Other channels usually focus on how to say sentences correctly but not on how to avoid serious mistakes. Thanks for this!

    I've been learning Mandarin for four years now. I've been taught about these constructions before of course. Today, for the first time ever, I've learned about this difference XD Really, somehow no one really cared to explain that to me before, even though I must have gotten this difference wrong during classes many times.

    Very interesting and useful video! So we use the 是的 structure for emphasis. What about putting 昨天 in front of 我. That way we also emphasize yesterday right?
    And another thing. At 2:57. If B would be: 'We drove to the park'. So when I want to add park in the sentence. I put park after 的 right? Like this 我们是开车去的公园。Is it also possible to put 公园 in front of 的. Or wouldn't it make sense? Or is it maybe wrong because it wouldn't be clear enough whether you emphasize 开车 or 公园?

    • @ChineseZeroToHero
      @ChineseZeroToHero  6 лет назад

      这些都可以:
      我们是开车去的公园。
      我们是开车去公园的。
      昨天,我们是开车去的公园。
      我们是昨天开车去的公园。

    I think that 是…的 is generally used to emphasize an adverb: when/where/how/why. I wonder if it could be used to emphasize a noun. For the last example in the video, I wonder if I could use it to emphasize: THIS is what I bought in Beijing. Could I say: 是这个我在北京买的。

    • @ChineseZeroToHero

    Can you please explain why "谁说的" is translated as "Who said that?" I don't know if the whole phrase would be "是谁说的" but based on this video, if we ask "who" it's not immediately apparent why we should not say "是谁说了".

    I have some difficulty grasping the rationale behind this gramatical structure when using a personal pronoun. [Pronoun + shi4 + when/where/how + de5 + (omitted noun) ]. When you ask for example: When did you see Mark? and later answer: Wo3 shi4 zuo2tian1 qu4jian4 Ma3ke4 de5... How do you explain it? is it something like: I am THE ONE that yesterday went to see mark? The full chinese answer including the omitted noun at the end would be something like: Wo3 shi4 zuo2tian1 qu4jian4 Ma3ke4 de5 ren2?

      你在哪裡學中文? 我是在大學學中文的。
      你星期幾要上課?我是星期三要上課的。
      I can't guarantee you that it's correct since I'm not a native, but it should be something along the lines of this.

    • @mountaintag
      @mountaintag 6 лет назад

      I am even less of a native speaker :-) but I tend to agree with Vallaris A. Because I think that the item to be emphasized needs to follow directly after 是. So kev villa's last example seems to stress 要. Perhaps it could be translated as "On Wednesday, I really want to go to class" (if it could be considered correct at all). To stress "Wednesday" even more, I would be tempted to say: 是星期三我要上课的。

    • @ChineseZeroToHero
      @ChineseZeroToHero  6 лет назад +2

      你在哪裡學中文? OK
      我是在大學學中文的。OK
      你星期幾要上課?OK
      我是星期三要上課的。❌
      我星期三要上课。OK
      Remember, this video is strictly talking about COMPLETED actions (usually the past). 是……的 is usually used for past, completed actions.

    • @ChineseZeroToHero
      @ChineseZeroToHero  6 лет назад +4

      是星期三我要上课的。❌
      我是星期三要上课的。MAYBE, but sounds a bit strange.
      No, we have to say 我星期三要上课 instead. 是……的 generally only work with past, completed actions.

    why cannot be : 我昨天去见了马克?
    vs 我昨天见马克了 whats the difference?
    Make it worse, i am Chinese. Mandarin is my first language. After watching these RUclips videos, then i knew the way i spoke Chinese is incorrect in terms of grammar

    • @kalinsapotato
      @kalinsapotato 4 года назад

      I may be but a learner of Chinese as a second language, but I was thinking very hard about this too.
      My conclusion is that it's a structure when there are two consecutive actions. Because you're going... AND seeing Mark, the 了 gets moved to behind the object. The most common case seems to be using 来 and 去 from what I found after frantically searching for examples. Do you think what I'm think makes sense? I could have it wrong.

  • @CrystalNung
    @CrystalNung 6 лет назад

    Is 我昨天去见了马克 the same as 我昨天去见马克了 ?
    And is 我们开车去了公园 the same as 我们开车去公园了?

    • @Rushikeshhome
      @Rushikeshhome 6 лет назад +1

      I guess there is difference. 了indicate that action is completed. So, use 了 when you want to suggest action is done....... But note that 了 is not indication of past tense...... But wait for their official answer, it will increase my knowledge too.......

    • @kevinthehouse2445
      @kevinthehouse2445 6 лет назад +1

      Hrushikesh Khot for what I know, in these examples there is no difference, both are correct. However, if you put in a counter you need to put the 了 in the middle of the sentence.

    • @mountaintag
      @mountaintag 6 лет назад +1

      I think that with a counter included, you can still add another 了 at the end of the sentence to indicate that the count will continue. This could be translated as "so far" or "up until now". For example: 我吃了三个饺子了 "I have eaten three dumplings, so far". 我玩了三个小时了 "I have been playing for three hours, so far."

    • @mountaintag
      @mountaintag 6 лет назад +2

      My feeling is that putting 了 right after the verb implies something more immediate. So perhaps your first example could be translated as "I went to see Mark just yesterday". But the word "just" would not be implied in the second example. Certainly, if 刚刚 or 刚才 is used, then 了 needs to appear right after the verb. For example: 我刚才去见了马克 "I just now went to see Mark."

    • @ChineseZeroToHero
      @ChineseZeroToHero  6 лет назад

      You're absolutely right. This is an HSK 1 video, there are many other uses of 了 which will be covered in HSK3+.
