I absolutely love mine.
It sounds good on it's own but in combination with a Master Effects Martyr it's the perfect 90s metal tone.
you should try out the VHD by S&K Pedals, it's also a vh140 style pedal

This thing doesn't sound like my VH140C. The distortion sounds fizzy and stale.
Obituary never used the VH140C, they've always used JCM800 boosted with ProCo Rat (almost like Morbid Angel, but more loosely set). VH140C is a Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Gorguts, Eyehategod, Animosity and, if I'm not mistaken, Earth Crisis thing. MAYBE Hate Eternal, though, most information on that is conflicting.
Doug Cerrito always used vh140c's and he played on the first Hate Eternal album, I think you can hear it mixed in there. But Erik's guitars were a Marshall 3203 Artist boosted with a Boss SD-1 on the first two albums.
Which albums? I've always loved Earth Crisis' tone.

It's funny how often these show up on albums that defined my taste in guitar tone.
Modellers never sounded quite like what I was after, I even got a tube SLO clone and while it sounds great, it was still basically like the model with small differences.
I bought a $30 Crate practice amp, used it as a preamp, got me 90% of the way there. Eventually got a VH-in-a-box pedal, got me 99% of the way there. I've got a VS-in-a-box too, just to round out the trinity.
I feel like the people who kept telling me I needed a tube amp lied because it turns out most of the amps that informed my tastes were solid-state Ampegs, Marshalls, Crates, Peaveys, Randalls, etc.

the vh140c was my first half stack that i bought brand new in 1993 !! my buddy still has it since i sold it to him ! maybe i can try to get it back again ! :)
Man I just checked, wasn't aware the VH140 prices had gone up so much.. I remember the days when you'd always find one collecting dust in the darkest corner of Guitar Center for $150 🤣

I don't know the VH140C, but that pedal needs definitely an overdrive to sound decent.
Well, yeah, think of it as of a solid state Recto needing a boost.
I picked up one used for $100 and I love mine. I run mine with a TS9 in front of it for more top end because the highs on full are a little weak but everything else is great.
Sounds cool but cheaper pedals will get you there too. Great vid Kyle.

I have a vh140c head and its sad you have to do so much to this pedal to get it to sound good. The amp is wham bam sound like slam. Really would love to stop lugging it around any longer though and hoped this might be the answer. I have a headrush rig so I may be able to get it to sound good with some plugs from it.
