  • Everyone thinks that they want residency the moment that they look at Nicaragua. But do you actually want residency? Let's seriously talk about the options and think about what might be right for you. Maybe a long term tourist visa is what you need.

    I'm not familiar with Nicaragua as I haven't lived there, but there are some things I could add to the discussion with other places I've lived in regard to why many want to get residency.
    Firstly when it comes to visa runs, many countries are starting to crack down on them. In Mexico for example the government is becoming very strict in enforcing that visitors can only come into the country 180 days per year and border officials are stopping those who are crossing the border just to reset their time in the country.
    The second big reason why many want residency over just visiting as a tourist is that it is more permanent and it eventually leads to citizenship. No matter how much time one spends in a country as a tourist they will never work towards citizenship as they would with a residency permit. Once you are a citizen you have guaranteed access to the country for life, whereas tourists don't, and of course, tourist visa policies could change at any time, but once you are a citizen no one can stop you from entering and spending as much time as you want.
    As for getting a residency before visiting a country, there are some reasons why people want to do that. Going back to my last point it sometimes has to do with citizenship. In Mexico, as an example, you have to live in the country for 18 months out of two years before you apply for citizenship, but you must have held your residence permit for 5 years. So many will get a residence permit and let it "age out" for 3 years, then move to Mexico for the final two years, and then apply for citizenship; this gives them citizenship in two years rather than five years by ageing out the residency. Some people go a step further and have a "paper residency", which is a residence permit to a country you actually never go to. It used to be a case that in Paraguay you could get citizenship after just three years of holding residency but there wasn't a specified amount of time that one had to spend in the country, so many would just get residency in Paraguay and spend just a day a year there for three years, then apply and get citizenship; eventually they, of course, changed the laws to get rid of this loophole.
    Another reason some get residency in a country they don't live in is that they want a Plan B. Many in the States (including myself) hold residencies in countries we don't live in so that if something happens in our country(like the pandemic or a war) and we want to go elsewhere we can due to our residency permit.
    The last reason for having a residency without living in the country, which doesn't really apply to Nicaragua or most Latin American countries is access to local financial services. For example, Singapore is known for having some of the best banking and investment services in the world but in more recent years many financial institutions have said they only want those who are residents in the country to bank with them. So many ultra-high-net-worth individuals will get a residence permit in Singapore purely because they want access to banking, investment funds, stock market etc. in the country without actually living in the country.
    These were many of the reasons I've seen it more advantageous to get a residency permit. Let me know if you agree or if there are other considerations I'm not taking into account.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Год назад +1

      I don't believe that that is a standard requirement. I believe that that only applies to the pensioner's residency, which has to be renewed annually, so makes sense that you need to have been actively resident during the renewal period. The good residency that people actually want doesn't require anything like that as far as I am aware.

      @@ScottAlanMillerVlog I think it was the attorney Paul Tifer who indicated a requirement for half a year. I don't remember whether he specified a particular visa requiring the half year. But certain ones can let you come just a few days every couple of years??

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Год назад

      @@dovygoodguy1296 I don't know how low you can go, but one has to ask... given that six months is how long you get to stay without a border run WITHOUT filing for residency, there's really no value to having residency if you aren't in the country more than that. I don't think that there is a hard number that you have to hit... but the question really shouldn't come up. Why would you want it under those conditions?

    I'm binge watching lol - I did the 90-day border run in Tanzania then after the one-year visa expired I did a 90-day at the end of 90 days I left for a month then they refused to let me re-enter the country. so, I moved on I've been in Africa 2 1/2 years and I'm ready to go so more of the world. the problem is the minimum income in most of these places is ridiculously high. I tutor English online, and I've had to increase my hours so that I might qualify for long term visa elsewhere. So, I'm happy to hear I can border run and see places I have never been .... thanks for the info. Q did you get you dogs there or bring them with you?

      On the way home, Lidia stopped in Managua at the embassy, before going to the airport. The goal was to get a list of everything I would need for a spousal residency visa, but they handed her a phone whereby some lady told her she would have to contact the government.

      She left very frustrated.
      So I am just going on a tourist visa and will just figure it out in time.

      Yes, definitely rent. Never buy in a new place until you have been there a significant amount of time. Imagine moving to Canada from far, far away with no idea what Canada is like. You might randomly move to Montreal but then realize you prefer Vancouver or PEI. From a distance you don't have the first guess where would be good to buy or that you even want to stay. Just come, rent, learn... don't make irreversible decisions. Do little, simple steps so that you can make your decisions well.

      No one that wants you to do well will try to sell you a house or land or to get you to invest until you are established and really know what you are doing. Anyone that pushes you to buy or invest before you move here (and many after you do) is purely hoping to cheat you before you know how to recognize a fair deal or real value.
