  • As the cross wind literally blew this C 123 Thunder Pig sideways the pilot was poised and used his skill to bring it home safe. Amazing for sure. watch in 4k!

    As a Hercules Pilot Examiner, he simply stopped flying the wing on touchdown. Large high wing aircraft have full roll control authority on the ground. Rudder is used to control direction to almost taxiing speeds. Looks like he touched down, abandoned roll (aileron) and rudder inputs and simply tried to use nose wheel steering to keep straight. The result was inevitable. A rookie mistake we see from low time truckie pilots. Fly the aircraft on just primary flight controls down to taxing speeds and only then transfer on to nosewheel steering.

      He held right aileron until the right tip nearly hit, only then hard left. WTF was the right roll input for?? I see little rudder work.

      Look at 00:31. He's got the *wrong* aileron correction in just after touchdown. It's not until 00:34 that he's got full left aileron in, at which point of course the situation is corrected.

    Pilot Error. Notice the windsock at 0:27. The wind is quartering out of the left but at 0:32 you see the pilot is holding significant right aileron which is exacerbating the crosswind condition impact on the aircraft. They did correct the error but that could have been a a lot worse.

    So the title to this video is "Amazing skilled pilot lands C-123 in heavy cross wind."
    Now based on my limited hours landing a C-123 but my incredible ability to Monday morning quarterback this with hindsight and an outside view of what's going on I have to ask why weren't his ailerons into the wind as he landed and kept them to the left on roll out. I replayed the video in RUclips at .25% speed and at the time the wing was picked up it looks like the opposite input was given and that helped the right wing to dip. That's my 2 cents anyways. Oh and by the way that plane will be at OSH this year so glad it wasn't hurt and look forward to seeing it fly there.

    • @Aspro
      @Aspro  Год назад +4

      Thank you for the 2 cents! As the event videographer I had 2 ways to spin it for the public, positive or like the news media negative. I just chose positive. The grass area the plane went into was a bit rough and had some hidden ruts, I think the landing wheel may have dipped into one and caused some of the tipping. But thank God plane was perfectly fine and can fly another day! In the end thats what really counts.

    Good touchdown, but Improper aileron input for a left X- wind afterward. Upwind throttle application is unknown. In addition to the right wing tip, they nearly had a ground strike with the right engine propeller. Add to it, a transfer of weight from the mains to the nose wheel due to forward CG, extended wing flaps, and braking followed by reversing (wheelbarrowing). When you operate some of the higher profile aircraft that we do, every nuance is on display to the world. I'm sure the flight crew conferenced afterward.

    That little Cessna L-19 Bird Dog was taxying by during the approach. Now maybe he was turning back due to the crosswind, or maybe he'd just landed. But if the L-19 had just landed there is NO EXCUSE for the lousy roll out of the C123.

    So the Bookie -bird had some tight X-wind limitations - 18 KTS, I think. This didn’t appear to be near that - looked pretty much a right quartering HW to me (but to be clear I wasn’t there). Still should be doable wo much sweat, so a little embarrassing. Good news is that even after all these years she’s a tough old thing and highly battle worthy. This one’ll live to fly those shuttles from Bien Hoa to Bu Dop or Than son nut to Tay Ninh, loaded with 105mm ammo, if only if only in her dreams. But like I said , she was tough, tougher than most.

      Lack of control? The final approach was fine. The wind was indeed gusting that day, so the approach was actually quite stable. It was the improper x-wind control on roll out that caused this.

    That was a great demo how a unskilled pilot needs to go back to training. The winds were maybe 8-12 kts down the runway. BTW in the start of the clip, there was a L-19 Birddog that landed.....The Dog is a handful in any xc wind over 10-15 kts.....As having 1000+ hrs in B-17,DC-3, etc.....the pilot is lacking skill big time! The pilot had up aileron on the up wind wing! No wander he drifted to the right! Basics are missed. This is getting to be a problem within the War Bird Community....These planes are starting to get closer in not being able to fly just because of incompetent pilots!
