- As the cross wind literally blew this C 123 Thunder Pig sideways the pilot was poised and used his skill to bring it home safe. Amazing for sure. watch in 4k!

As a Hercules Pilot Examiner, he simply stopped flying the wing on touchdown. Large high wing aircraft have full roll control authority on the ground. Rudder is used to control direction to almost taxiing speeds. Looks like he touched down, abandoned roll (aileron) and rudder inputs and simply tried to use nose wheel steering to keep straight. The result was inevitable. A rookie mistake we see from low time truckie pilots. Fly the aircraft on just primary flight controls down to taxing speeds and only then transfer on to nosewheel steering.
He held right aileron until the right tip nearly hit, only then hard left. WTF was the right roll input for?? I see little rudder work.
Look at 00:31. He's got the *wrong* aileron correction in just after touchdown. It's not until 00:34 that he's got full left aileron in, at which point of course the situation is corrected.
My left leg just hit the floor.
Did any of you scientist also ever consider that big ole C-123 landed on a unimproved soft grass runway? You might want to throw that into the equation there Einstein.
Pilot Error. Notice the windsock at 0:27. The wind is quartering out of the left but at 0:32 you see the pilot is holding significant right aileron which is exacerbating the crosswind condition impact on the aircraft. They did correct the error but that could have been a a lot worse.
It's surprising to read cross wind without drift, and a windsock nearly in the axle of the runway.
Shouldn't have gotten it into that situation but did well to recover after effing up I think is a fair statement lol
Shame you weren't flying it that day, boss.
@@Meddled Look at the ailerons. He turned that wing down. It was a good recovery which also indicates how good the design was.
@@Meddled I don't judge,I just tell what I saw.Aviation is a lesson of humility, and everyone can make an error. At the end, what imports is safety, and as none as been hurt,no sweat.
So the title to this video is "Amazing skilled pilot lands C-123 in heavy cross wind."
Now based on my limited hours landing a C-123 but my incredible ability to Monday morning quarterback this with hindsight and an outside view of what's going on I have to ask why weren't his ailerons into the wind as he landed and kept them to the left on roll out. I replayed the video in RUclips at .25% speed and at the time the wing was picked up it looks like the opposite input was given and that helped the right wing to dip. That's my 2 cents anyways. Oh and by the way that plane will be at OSH this year so glad it wasn't hurt and look forward to seeing it fly there.
Thank you for the 2 cents! As the event videographer I had 2 ways to spin it for the public, positive or like the news media negative. I just chose positive. The grass area the plane went into was a bit rough and had some hidden ruts, I think the landing wheel may have dipped into one and caused some of the tipping. But thank God plane was perfectly fine and can fly another day! In the end thats what really counts.
@@Aspro yes! And I am looking forward to seeing it at OSH this year
Drunk driving is dangerous 🙈
Great catch , Bill !
Good touchdown, but Improper aileron input for a left X- wind afterward. Upwind throttle application is unknown. In addition to the right wing tip, they nearly had a ground strike with the right engine propeller. Add to it, a transfer of weight from the mains to the nose wheel due to forward CG, extended wing flaps, and braking followed by reversing (wheelbarrowing). When you operate some of the higher profile aircraft that we do, every nuance is on display to the world. I'm sure the flight crew conferenced afterward.
Every Pilot should be able to land in Conditions like that, if not he is a danger for everyone.
how do you know the pilots a man ya sexist
SKILLED???? I'm afraid you have this pilot confused with Helen Keller!
Skill ?? This pilot needs more lessons in that valuable asset . Start with basic airmanship skills. Whoever signed him off must have been a really good friend !
I spoke to the crew this week. The pilot failed to do crosswind correction. An oversight that almost cost them big.
Looked to me like the right aileron was deflected up at the time which would push the right wing down as what happened here.
I flew in and out of postage stamp LZs in this aircraft. There were times the props were cutting jungle when we stopped.
Thats pretty cool. And scary, thanks for your service!
Excellent video! Thunder Pig arrived safely at home yesterday afternoon. A short of her approach & taxi at Beaver County on my channel.
That is awesome!
What video is it?
C-123's still in servive?!?!
anything but a skilled pilot, as soon he tounched down he gave up flying no correction for the cross wind, you have to fly them to the parking spot.
Es un avión FIAT.?
Zoti na ruajt
Lucky. It's nice not to see this one wrecked by a movie company.
Rookies. Time for more cross wind training.
Pretty sure it’s an old guy with a ton of hours
That is scary indeed.
Happened right in our laps at the Top Gun tent. The right wing tip was only inches from impact with the ground. Pilot skill of the highest order, coupled with outright luck, preventing a tragedy.
If they were a skillful pilot…they would’ve had full left aileron deflection after touchdown.
Definitely not skill. This was 100% pilot induced and completely avoidable for the same reason mentioned in several other comments below.
There was little pilot skill here. If this had been skill, it never would have happened in the first place. The video clearly shows improper x-wind correction which is what caused this,
Totally pilot error. No strong cross wind. Look at the wind sock when plane touches down
“Pilot skill of the highest order”. No, how about pure stupidity? That’s better fitting.
whaouuuuu
This is the definition of a pucker moment
You aint kidding.
That little Cessna L-19 Bird Dog was taxying by during the approach. Now maybe he was turning back due to the crosswind, or maybe he'd just landed. But if the L-19 had just landed there is NO EXCUSE for the lousy roll out of the C123.
Like the movie Air America
Awesome capture! May I feature this landing in one of my next episodes? Of course with a link back to your original video. Keep up the great work!
Thats fine, just give me a mention thanks.
So the Bookie -bird had some tight X-wind limitations - 18 KTS, I think. This didn’t appear to be near that - looked pretty much a right quartering HW to me (but to be clear I wasn’t there). Still should be doable wo much sweat, so a little embarrassing. Good news is that even after all these years she’s a tough old thing and highly battle worthy. This one’ll live to fly those shuttles from Bien Hoa to Bu Dop or Than son nut to Tay Ninh, loaded with 105mm ammo, if only if only in her dreams. But like I said , she was tough, tougher than most.
The Cross wind was 20 knots on and off all day, a few planes did not go up, and they cancelled our formation photo flight due to the swirling winds. What ever the issue, I'm just glad the crew and plane were fine!
Why does this airplane always have such a hard time landing?
It looks to me like he started to weathercock to the left and being on the ground motor car muscle memory had him “turn the wheel to the right”, exactly the wrong input. Every crosswind landing brief yourself to maintain aileron into the wind on rollout.
If thsts heavy winds, then why aren't the trees limbs blowing all-over AND why is the bird dog tail dragger getting ready to take off

Hey great catch mate! Can i feature this in one of my upcoming episodes? Of Course you will get credit for it! Thanks
I dont mind as long as its a neutral or pistive spin, i dont wanna trash the pilot like many have been. They were not there, i was, wind was terrible and swirling
@@Aspro thanks for the reply! i will use it with neutral information! Thanks for letting me use this clip
"Amazing skilled pilot" fucked up and nearly stuffed the right wing into the ground with right aileron input at 0:32. That would have been a fine time to roll left.. not right.
Amazing pilot….😂😂😂
The lack of control during the initial approach was the first clue for me, that they should have gone around. Then the incorrect cross-wind inputs during the landing. Sorry, but this is not skillful. Luck for sure!
Lack of control? The final approach was fine. The wind was indeed gusting that day, so the approach was actually quite stable. It was the improper x-wind control on roll out that caused this.
Wow! What a great maneuver on the ground, yes indeed.
🍺
Great skill in reining that big bus in! Top notch piloting!
Horrible piloting.
Looks to me like he screwed up a normal crosswind landing.
No. Idiot crashed a perfectly good airplane.
Total incompetence. Why would you call it top notch piloting? Ppl are weird. 😂😂
Interesting landing...no doubt a bit of a gust at the wrong time. Made a good recovery out of a bad situation.👍👍🇬🇧
It was close!
Yeah looked a lot closer in person
A big hand of applause for the skilled pilot who saved the plane from near disaster.
Great work 👏 👍🏼
Very skilled indeed. He only left the runway once.
I just toured this plane at Airventure on saturday, and then to see this video makes me so glad the pilots are so skilled and i was still able too
You call that skilled?
I see a wheelbarrow. And a taxiing O-1, that would not be able to leave the hanger in a real wind. Sorry.
need to change underwear
You ain't kidding.
Skilled???
impressive manouvering, very skilled pilot must say
Pilot had no skill that’s the problem. Try using the ailerons and rudder next time. Big problem these days is the lack of stick and rudder skills!
I do not see any skills here! More like avoiding a disaster due to own fault.
Sorry, but this is not a skilled landing.
Sorry, more luck than skill.
That was a great demo how a unskilled pilot needs to go back to training. The winds were maybe 8-12 kts down the runway. BTW in the start of the clip, there was a L-19 Birddog that landed.....The Dog is a handful in any xc wind over 10-15 kts.....As having 1000+ hrs in B-17,DC-3, etc.....the pilot is lacking skill big time! The pilot had up aileron on the up wind wing! No wander he drifted to the right! Basics are missed. This is getting to be a problem within the War Bird Community....These planes are starting to get closer in not being able to fly just because of incompetent pilots!
