  • Kasey Chambers ’Lose Yourself’
Recorded and filmed at Civic Theatre, Newcastle
Edited by Duncan Toombs @ The Filmery
    15 June, 2022
The video for ‘Lose Yourself’ is thanks to Kasey’s fans in the audience on the final show of her recent Behind The Barricades tour. After much demand from fans to release the live performance and noting so many cameras in the air, Kasey asked fans to send through any footage they had filmed. The result is a perfect time capsule of how a great song, performed authentically from the heart can bring a room of strangers to connect in such a powerful shared emotion.

"Nah, it's not possible.. surely... to put all the angst, frustration, pain, sorrow, trauma, sweetness, beauty and then anger, rage, determination and humanity into one performance?".... Casey Chambers... "Hold my beer!"... Fuck me, that is hands down the most powerful thing I have ever experienced, probably the most powerful performance ever recorded. It's a joy beyond my capacity to express to watch it. I especially adore that one moment before the last refrain where she sings "The last chance that I got... " and backs away from the mic singing "got" (is singing the right word?) and the she literally "Loses Herself"... completely for just a moment. And Casey, every time I watch and hear that moment.. I lose myself too! Brilliant.. Thank you Casey, I see you and it's magnificent!

  • @keithautrey

There's something magical about hearing a song you've heard 1,000 times done so original, so different, so raw and emotional, that it's like you've just heard it for the first time. I always thought Eminem was a phenomenal lyricist, but Kasey made sure every line was packed with pain, sorrow, regret, anger, rage...even optimism. I stumbled upon this song and like everyone else that started watching, I thought, "Is she covering this with a banjo?" and by the end holding back tears, completely blown away.
I heard that even Eminem gave her the thumbs up to share this and profit. Can you imagine writing this song, winning a Grammy and an Academy Award, and then hearing another artist cover it and do this much justice? Bravo Kasey. I'm a fan.

  • @alexisclements3167

This clip doesn't do the performance justice, I was there in the audience that night, and the whole crowd had a raw electrified emotional intensity running through it that just kept building with every verse as she went. I'm tearing up now just reliving the memory of those feelings in the moment. I'm not particularly what you'd call a 'fan' of Kasey Chambers or country music (there are very few artists I'd say I am), IMO she's a great song writer though, and she is hands down one of the best live performers ever! Revisiting this clip and it's still one of the.fucking.fiercest performances I've ever seen. Kasey Chambers little did I know 30years ago seeing you at the Hume Country Golf Club and not appreciating the rawness of your talent that has now grown into an artist that is truly original and unique. You stand in your own lane the twists and turns that you have endured in your music career has brought you to this Masterpiece. It is truly a piece of Art!! Only to be delivered the way you have as you have lived the story that was written by the original artist.
I talk about dynamics alot when I discuss music as that's what connects with me in my journey playing music. The dynamics in this Masterpiece are both vocally and musically overwhelming and it's no wonder that you have received critical acclaim. I was lucky enough to see you and your band perform this piece in Echuca. This Masterpiece is the standard that we as Musicians both professional and amateur should aspire to. Fuck, it cuts right through you when someone does. When they’ve hurt enough that they have no other choice.
There aint any metal singer who can sound this disappointed, this fed-up, this discontented. This angry.
Real anger has simple pained words attached to it. The voices crackles. it seethes and burns. Pained vulnerability turning into visceral rage of having spent a life needlessly chasing dreams.
