    I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia two months ago and I suffer with Gerd, constant nausea and vomiting with difficulty swallowing and a lot of times feels like my drinks or food is coming back up, I have frequent laryngitis, IBS, sleep apnea and asthma. My ENT stated my hernia came from my excessive coughing from my asthma attacks and Gerd. I have changed my diet taking Pepcid twice a day and Dexilant 60mg daily and Hyosyne when needed for stomach spasm , my gastroenterologist instructed me to loose weight even though I’ve lost 20 pounds due to lost of appetite and taste. My primary care physician have referred me to a surgeon for consultation because she is not in agreement with my gastroenterologist because it’s been two years me battling Gerd etc. any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I saw a few exercise videos for hernia but the exercises were the same ones I was doing for my lower back and hip pain.

      I had GI who ignored all of my symptoms, even though I was diagnosed with GERD by him 5 yrs ago. After 2 Colonosopy and 3 Endoscopy with NO medical treatment, not even Rx, I have a new GI who is fantastic. He's moving at warp speed since I have occult blood loss. My hiatal hernia is "large", but real intel coming in 2 days when he scopes me. Praying for relief from constant nausea, vomiting, abd pain, etc.

      hiatal hernia is a symptom usually from neurogenic weakness of one side of the diaphragm. since the diaphragm forms the valve (cardiac sphincter) which should keep stomach contents from refluxing back up the esophagus, such weakness can permit reflux to occur. there may be some therapeutics which might reduce this symptom, however, the best approach is whenever possible to correct the cause, such as restoring complete innervation by liberating the nervous system from interference.

      A hiatal hernia will permit more reflux. I wouldn’t go to the extreme of using the word always. Many small hernias are sliding and spend a fair portion of time in a normal anatomic position.

I have managed to have these fairly well through diet, exercise, and supplements. Recently, my usual ways of handling haven’t worked as well and now waiting for over a month for test for Gastro paresis.. I’m so curious as to what the cause of that could actually be. Hi Doc. I was recently diagnosed with a small hiatal hernia during an endoscopy. The GI doctor didn’t even mention the finding. It was on the paper work. Assuming this is a small / sliding hiatal hernia, would I be able to play basketball / lift small weights? I’m only 32 and am curious if I can play sports with my kids without risking progressing the hernia to needing surgery. I follow up with the GI doctor in a few weeks.

    • @MarkCooperMD
      @MarkCooperMD  Год назад +2

      The vast majority of people with the condition are essentially unaffected or minimally affected by it and it won’t impact their lifestyle. I wouldn’t tell my patients with a small hernia to restrict their activity as the risk of the hernia progressing due to exercise is small and the benefits of exercise are immense (especially when it’s with your kids).

    • @boomeradvocate
      @boomeradvocate 23 дня назад

      @starrleo12 Sounds very much like you're anemic, which can be caused by iron deficiency (below normal Ferritin level). Plz look up symptoms of Iron Deficiency Anemia. I had to get iron infusions from hematologist for six years. Low Iron and low Hemoglobin caused me severe heart palpitations (sometimes felt like a heart attack and docs assumed panic attacks). It also can cause fast heart rate, but not raise blood pressure. I had gastro testing done several times bc my symptoms were getting worse every year. They couldn't find any evidence of a GI bleed (gastrointestinal). But the Hiatal Hernia I had was "large" and turns out it was causing slow leak of blood for years. I was always fatigued, and had headaches when anemic. Finally, I switched to a new gastro doctor who referred me to a bariatric surgeon. I had the Hiatal hernia repaired surgically in March 2024. It was 3 hr surgery, but only in hospital 1 night. Since the surgery, I've gradually attained much better hemoglobin and iron. WARNING: Most CT scans and MRIs don't catch the severity. I don't know what's causing yours, but your symptoms may be from ANEMIA (low red blood cells) and/or iron deficiency.

    Thank you for this, I have just been diagnosed with a Hiatal hernia the only thing is I do get tons of heart fluttering, I was wondering if it can put pressure on your vagus nerve? because my heart workups are always ok but i get alot of palpitations and pvc's the only thing I know I have is a hiatal hernia seen in my endoscopy.

    • @MarkCooperMD
      @MarkCooperMD  Год назад

      Good question. I would be inclined to first look at your heart and it’s exercise tolerance. Many people have more perception of PVCs over 30. I’d defer to a cardiologist for advice on how dangerous they are for you. Factors of alcohol and caffeine can contribute. A small hiatal hernia is not likely the primary trigger and more likely coincidental.

    • @pr0gr4m3dd
      @pr0gr4m3dd 6 месяцев назад +2

      That was my very first symptom, I got sick and just had a ton of palpitations and I thought it was cause I was sick so after tons and tons of cardiac work ups I realized that anytime my heart would flutter a bunch it would be associated with burping. And when I pressed on my epigastric area I would feel a dull pain. After an endoscopy turns out I have a hiatal hernia AND Barratts esophogus which was crazy cause in in my 20s, in great shape and I never had any GERD symptoms outside of maybe a month or two ago. But yeah palpitations come and go and I know it's from the hiatal hernia even know I can never get a clear answer from a doctor. I spoke to a cardiologist, my doctor, a GI doctor. They all said maybe and it bothered me
