Taking the i7 4770k for a spin in 2019, is it still fast enough for 1440p?

      @@seanthenetworkguy8024 Depends on what you want to do but the 3000 series is actually super compelling for more professional workloads. Saying that, even for gaming and streaming they're good parts. I'm looking into getting a 3700X for my rig as I seldom use AVX unless a game or program mandates it. This for me is less important though as my PC gets used mostly for non-AVX video rendering and encoding with OpenCL acceleration, so a Zen chip in my workloads ends up being within margin of error of a 9900. I'll be honest though. I kinda miss the 1650 v1 that I have now dedicated to Server duty for gaming. that thing was a monster of a 6-core for its age!

    There are 25 4470K based machines still running in my lab - they're all stock, air-cooled (not the nasty Intel supplied cooler), and I can confirm that they all have very different overclocking and heat issues (we do get our students to play with overclocking when doing benchmarking practicals).
    GPU wise most of these machines run GTX 970s (Upgraded from the GTX 780s they were delivered with), 2 of them run GTX 1080s and another 2 of them run original Titan Xs (these four machines run out VR suite (2 HTC Vives, 2 Oculus Rifts).

    I waited and bought the i7 3770K because it had PCI-e 3.0 at the time and was a 22nm shrink. Even now today it still running strong at 4.7GHz but it can run at 5GHz once delided and the boards BCLK raised a bit. Also don't be afraid to raise the Vcore past 1.450v if needed. If the temps are in check. i just needed a better cooler. With these 22nm CPU's there some skillz needed to push these chips. I have it on a Z77 ASRock Extreme 4 that has a 8phase Vcore intersil VRM. I've bought all my CPU's from Micro Center and they have always been great overclocking chips. Just last year i bought the 8700K for $280 and the z370 Aorus Gaming 7 to go with it for $150. and that chip can run 5.3Ghz at 1.390v. That's better than silicon lottery's top 5%. I was definitely surprised and wondered why anyone would return such a good chip. Its not even delided. I have it at 1.250v at 5Ghz on air. and couldn't be happier with that chip. The MC i go to has crazy deals on open-box or damaged box hardware. I know not everyone has the option to hit up a Micro Center but, if you get a chance, i would go and pick up some good deals.

      @robertvandeneijk1284 5 лет назад +2

      Indeed, can't get mine any higher than 4,5 for 24/7 use (on water, delided).
      Among other things, I use it semi daily for heavy floating point operations. So that's quite demanding. Most braggers with 4.8 would crash it in minutes in such use cases.

    • @rinserofwinds
      @rinserofwinds 5 лет назад +3

      @@robertvandeneijk1284 Exactly.
      "Stable" is a very strained definition for most internet oc braggers.
      I was running my 4790k @4.8ghz after delidding, but i needed ridiculously high 1.37v and LLC to get it rock stable.
      I do work on this machine and sometimes i game and stream with software encoding. Both are workloads, that needs to be 100% stable and are taxing the cpu much more than normal gaming benchmarks.
      I could do most benchmarks even for hours with ~1.3v.
      So i settled for 4.7ghz @1.3v with full LLC.
      Still a lot of voltage, but it should survive a few years untill Ryzen 3000 or 4000 will replace it.
      And let us be honest, 100 or 200 mhz don't change anything in speed.

      My friend's 4770k goes to 4.8ghz and my 4790k will only do 4.7ghz, both at 1.35v. What's odd though is at 4.6ghz, the 4770k needs 1.32v and my 4790k only needs 1.285v (so very little more than stock). I don't know if you'd call the 4770k a better bin or the 4790k? Either way, the 4790k is not clearly a better chip in terms of raw frequency. It does have some instruction sets enabled that the 4770k didn't (VT-d instriuctions) but those are barely used by non-business software anyway. The real advantage to the 4790k is that, put with a budget air cooler, it will run 4.4ghz all core turbo all day, out of the box. Turn on MCE or whatever it's called on your board, along with XMP and that's it. Some of the worst 4770k wouldn't get to 4.4ghz at all without stupid voltage.

    I can only speak for Intel CPUs but a Socket 775 system such as the 790i Ultra was fast enough for 1440p and even 4K. The bottleneck is almost _always the GPU_ . The exceptions are with high refresh rates, G-SYNC etc. but for 60fps gaming the CPU really hasn't been the issue for years...I ran (2)980Ti's in SLI in 4K/60 on a quad core without hyper-threading with few issues. Upgrading to an 8-core/16 thread using the exact same GPUs only made a difference for CPU intensive games so I largely didn't notice a difference in game. As long as the CPU clocks are at 4Ghz+ and you don't need more than 60fps (majority) an "old" CPU will usually work just fine.

    i snagged a 4770k recently to revive an old pc mine from the depths of my closet. I've gotta admit, I was and am, pleasantly surprised how good this cpu still is. I've been having some fun OC'ing it, and it actually holds up pretty good for how old it is. Back in the 90's, my first ever pc that I built with high end parts, was completely obsolete after 3 years. It went from being godlike, to trash picker in no time. This is not the case for 4770k.

    • @iredfive
      @iredfive 5 лет назад +3

      agreed. the method tech deals uses is the best way to compare CPU's which is what he was doing. he wasnt comparing what someone might build or might have; which is also a fair test to do, but one is not better than the other, and there was no reason for the disparaging comment about his methodology.

    • @charlesanderson1855
      @charlesanderson1855 5 лет назад +1

      @@iredfive The problem with only comparing CPUs or only comparing GPUs is you tend not to show how a complete system will run at a very common resolution such as 1440p. If you're buying a newer GPU for an older CPU, and you're not running it at 1080p, you might be left out and just guessing at what performance looks like on your config before you put it together. Timmy Joe was doing a service to the community here, it just would be good to see it in a sort of configuration that more people are likely to run (ATX motherboard without temperature limits, decent airflow ATX case, etc.)

    • @jamieholmes4391
      @jamieholmes4391 4 года назад +1

      I saw that Tech Deals video before I came here. It's very misleading. He was showing CPU performance as it relates to bottlenecking your GPU.
      Jumping from a Haswell processor to a modern CPU won't net me 60+ FPS because I don't have a 2080ti. It's going to net me ~10 FPS because I'm running a 980ti.
      That's significant and would have been useful for Tech Deals to include in the video.

I stll have today an i7 4770k @4.5 GHz paired with RTX 2080 and my colleague got an i7 7700K with GTX 1080. In Wolf Youngblood I got the CPU maxed out ranging between 90-100% utilisation while my colleague got his CPU running barely on 50% (remember: the same amount of cores and threads, just faster memory and interconnect). The funny thing is that - in 1080p 'm getting well above 120 fps on it with some very minor stuttering but happening seldom.

CPUs nowadays don't need upgrading as often. Can usually wait and upgrade GPU first for gaming at least. Wish Intel would make it so mobos wold be able to upgrade more tho. They seem to always have a new chipset so you need to spend on a mobo when upgrading. Miss the old socket 775 days when they could support a crap ton of different CPUs.

I'm on air and mine's only really stable at 4.2ghz and I don't really want to fiddle with it. My old 4690k was at 4.5ghz for a long time on this mobo. 4790k was too expensive and not worth it. Also if you still have this CPU socket and had an i3 or i5, the cheapest best bang for the buck upgrade looks like an E3-1231V3 on ebay for $70 you get very close performance. You can't OC it as easily, but even stock its a huge improvement over the i5/i3.
