  • The North American porcupine appears cute, but it has upward of 30,000 menacing quills over most of its body. The slow-moving herbivore delivers them only as a last-resort defense against predators.

    *Instructions for removing them:*
Use scissors or pliers and cut the top of the quill off to release the pressure. Then firmly grab quill and remove in a _twisting_ manner. Pulling out without twisting them in a spiral pattern will tear the skin and be very painful. If you twist while pulling you should be able to completely remove the quill. Remember to wash off the area and see a professional for assistance.

Pro tip: If you use quills in jewelry or crafts, always blunt the tip before you cut it off! The cut tips tend to go careening off in random directions because of the pressure difference inside the quill, and you do NOT wanna step on a 1- 3 mm tip that only digs in deeper with every step!

Guessing porcupines have never been in people's gardens before?
I always keep an eye on my dog but I live in the UK where the gardens are much smaller and there's less animals to be worried about - even then my dog has found hedgehogs snuffling around under bushes when he's gone to do his business. If it were a porcupine, that split second would have him come out covered exactly like the dog in the photo. There's plenty of other reasons why.
Dogs are curious - these experiences help dogs to learn from their actions. An owner can teach a dog not to go near dangers, but like kids, it's not uncommon for curiosity to get the better of them or even have accidents.
Let's not assume "bad owner" without any context.

And some carry the rabies virus, I saw a case were a game warden brought in an injured Bobcat that had messed with a porcupine and lost. Well after getting the quills removed and the bobcat was fully recovered, when they went to release it, the bobcat became very aggressive and started to come at the rehabilitation worker which prompted the game warden to pull out his service pistol and kill the bobcat.
And it was later revealed that the bobcat indeed had rabies. And when they tested the quills that were pulled out. They too tested positive for rabies. That’s just crazy to think that is one of many ways that the Rabies Virus can be transmitted

      Sorry, but this is nonsense.
The Rabies lyssavirus can *only* spreads through saliva, and essentially all mammals can get rabies.
Porcupine quills are made of keratin, they cannot carry the virus. If they found traces of the virus, it came from the bobcat's saliva (which are known as a carrier of the disease)
Porcupines are NOT primary carriers of rabies, it's very very rare in them, and you would have to be bitten (or kiss one) to get it.

PRO TIP: to remove a quill, you don’t need to use pliers and rip them out. In fact, never do that. Instead, twist them and gently pull them out. The barbs work like a screw and come out with little damage, compared to yanking them out.

Years ago I worked at a fabrication / machine shop in northern MN. It had a full time guard dog ... half German Shepherd named Carl ... he knew I loved him. He got into a porcupine during the weekend and I was on duty ALON. Close to 100 quills with lots in his mouth and a few way back to the point that Carl was nearly gagging with my hand jammed into his mouth. Using long nose pliers it took nearly 3 hours as Carl (and me) had to have several 10 minute breaks. Carl was fine afterwards and he outwardly showed to all the others that I was was his BFF.
