- For tens of thousands of college students in America, the toughest test they face is a lack of housing, seriously jeopardizing their chances to succeed. Lee Cowan reports on the trials faced by many students - young future lawyers, doctors and teachers - who struggle to find a proper place to sleep, and about the efforts of homeless shelters and food banks, such as Santa Monica's Students 4 Students Shelter, to provide help.

Why are colleges building athletic stadiums, luxurious amenities, and paying coaches when the cost of college is unaffordable and students like ones in this video are legally homeless?
The government provided colleges are not concerned with individuals. If they have sports teams, that takes precedent over individual students. I have not done any research into on-campus housing, but many places seem to be providing less on-campus housing now than when I attended college. I know there was a trend for students to prefer living in off campus apartments, but finances are often not there for many individual students. I also suspect that some dormitories have been reclassified for different usage.
Money for sports does not go towards anything other than more sports. See: UT Austin.
Jacob Johnson Fewer students attended college this year than last year and the year before because of these expenses. Makes no sense to have those amenities as a result.

We tried that, many can not be trusted, and they continue to hang out with their friends living in the streets that are a bad example for them. We took in a homeless lady as a housekeeper gave her money every day. We showed her friendship and told her she could eventually find a room of her own and make new friends. She could have had a new life.

This is such a sad story. For someone who is trying to better himself or herself, that person should not be dealing with homelessness and other negative issues.
It appears to me as though he was choosing college over employment. And employment translates into housing and food, especially for a single guy.
Part of the reason for the rising cost of higher education is that colleges are spending more on nicer dorms, student centers, and fitness centers, as opposed to actual educational facilities.
Employement without a marked college degree can translate into homelesses when working at minimum wage without family or friends to assist. At some point reality sets in and it's not a choice anymore.
+Jeff Wilbur I'm actually against adults being fed, housed and educated for free. And corporate tax cuts are almost the only thing keeping many manufacturing jobs in America.

I am a college grad boomer. So are most of my nieces and nephews (college graduates). They already have children. What age group are you selecting? I waited 10 years with a graduate degree in hand to find professional employment. Not on the rag here Kate.

Yes keep going... you are making the wealthy even wealthier. Be like sheep, and get more loans that can never be forgiven or forgotten through bankruptcy laws. Compete with the millions of others for the jobs that will never be there when you graduate. Apply to the most expensive schools in the most expensive housing areas of America because you are so smart. Your future debt will keep you paying taxes till death while your owners buy new yachts and teach there kids how to use these idiots to maintain family wealth.

Sad thing is they might not find a job with a degree in Political Science, Socialogy etc...a lot of them were promised to get out of poverty by investing in a college degree. It's just not true. Lots of them are probably better off going to a vocational school.
There is something extremely wrong in this country when our future professionals are digging in garbage cans for food and sleeping in a van down by the river. College shouldn’t be a crippling horrible decision you make, but a uplifting and enlightening time in your life. This treatment of our college students will come back to haunt us.

It's a nightmare nationwide. I'm in Texas and am one rental increase away from a homeless shelter.
We need to house our own first. Before we help other countries. I wish the powers that be. Would get this thru their head.
John Davis - My buddy in California is a semi-retired engineer, but he is going to buy a van to travel with and mostly live in it. You got the same idea. However, he does own a house in the Bay area that is worth a lot today. But for how long? Who knows. Sadly, he is a liberal, and shows some signs of understanding reality and common sense.
As a homeless college student in Santa Monica I can say there are programs for college students but they also have age restrictions which makes it hard for non-traditional students and that is one of the other issues.

Age restrictions, in any form, at a college is just another institutional way to enforce discrimination. How disgusting. What is the difference between age discrimination and banning a specific race from a learning institution.

@@ceritacarter4337 those are all great ideas and trust me people have informed me of different options but I'm so busy focused as a full-time student and working that I don't have a lot of time to run around to different organizations I need to focus on transferring at the end of the year that is my main goal but thank you
@@ceritacarter4337 I feel people need to be more vocal about these issues especially when it comes to age discrimination with nontraditional college students. There needs to be more housing put in place for junior colleges. If I had the time to be an activist on this issue trust me I would but right now I'm trying to keep my head above water while going to school full-time working and volunteering it's a lot. I also have to focus on keeping up my grades up for my last two classes so I can transfer at the end of the year. I just graduated with my associates last month.

So many empty and abandoned buildings around big cities which can be used to house these students, counties should offer more resources for these students, no reason for them to be homeless.

MetalGearMk3 I work in hospitality and most of my co workers have masters, while I don’t but worked in the industry since I am 17. I am debit free, and have my own flat with my partner while most of my co workers are still paying for their education while sharing house with +2 people. People definitely need to start seeing education as a investment instead of a golden key for 6 figures salaries

I was one of them. After trying everything to get back on my feet after loosing my job I had to live in and out between the street and shelters. I was living in Saint Vincent de Paul S D, Ca when I registered for college. They kicked me out right before classes started. They told me it was not a dorm. I got help as a veteran and got temporary shelter for winter. Got a student loan, a camper van and I graduated. The worst hurdle was the police that tried to trick me into getting out of the van so I expose myself as a city camper. I have to thank specially to Starbucks wi fi and the Veterans Village for housing after graduation. Nobody hires homeless so stop telling them to get a job. You need a real address for background checks as I was told when I was trying at first. College is free for the homeless but nothing else. Laptop, supplies, books, food, transportation, clothes are not included
I was a plumber, electrician and first graduated from a state university and lately an engineer. I am more educated than most people you will ever know in your life.EEUU bankrupted USA. That is the truth. I am a landlord now thanks to my inheritance. We are not rich but barely surviving in this fascist system
My daughter is in debt to Ball State on housing and food charges. She had a scholarship that helped pay for her classes and financial aid. In the end the highest charges were food and housing. Its ridiculous! We need to fix this problem Now!
Terrible. Now she needs to work like everyone else. Pay those bills. No one told your daughter to go to an out-of-state college. No one told your daughter to take lodging and meals from the college. Don't expect the rest of us to pay for your daughter's lifestyle choices. I can tell you are a terrible parent.

My daughter wanted to and got accepted at an out of state college. I had to break her heart because I can’t afford housing and I didn’t want to go further into debt. She got accepted at the Univ. of Pitt. which is great because she can live at home and I won’t be worried if she’s eating or sleeping indoors.
Thank goodness y'all realized that was better than an out-of-state school.

@@NemieVlog Most kids today don't want to live at home and go to a nearby commuter school because "it isn't cool" or they want bragging rights to a certain college or location....They want the "college life experience"......When I went to college, I lived at home for 4 years, worked a year still at home, got married, then went to the closest medical school and commuted every day......I knew I could barely afford things even the way I did it....Stupid parents let their kids go halfway across the country and somebody has to pay for it.....If your family has money, that's great. But if you don't come from money and will have student loans, it is much smarter to live at home & save your 💰

This was the right direction. I graduated in South Carolina and am currently enrolled in a school in Houston tx. it’s hard having no support and being in such a big city I’ve literally been surviving on the cafeteria here since January
It makes me sad to know so many students are struggling with expenses today. My grandparents paid for both of my degrees, plus food and housing. They even left me a sizable inheritance that I didn't deserve.
you can always give some of you inheritance as a scholarship to someone struggling this is in regards to feeling sad and wanting to do something about it. I don't believe if you have money you should be giving it away that is a personal choice. I myself choose to give it away if available.

You might want to consider donating some of that inheritance for scholarships at your alma mater(s). Especially since your grands were generous with you, and you think you didn't deserve your inheritance. Make them proud!
I am *so* thankful I lived with family when I was in college. It allowed me to finish school *without* taking out student loans!
I did too and I worked part time at a 5 star resturant making enough to walk graduation with no debt. It appears in this video the students don't hold a job.
Ariel Klay - Lucky you. I had to work 2 jobs to afford tuition and had to skip lunch to afford to pay for textbooks.
California is a very expensive state and I did work part time, mostly tutoring during school and the university I went to was almost an hour and a half away.
Realist - 25-30 hours during school year, 50 hours during the summer.
Living with my grandmother was a *real* blessing. She owned her mobile home free and clear and she let me drive her car and her Social Security was enough to pay for our food, space rent and other expenses. My grants covered my tuition and books. I ended up taking care of her after graduation.
You all better wake up because the jobs they tell you are waiting for your bachelor degree pays $13 an hour....IF they hire you instead of their neice . Wake up !!!

So true. I wish the candidates for President would address this issue. What changes could they implement to reduce homelessness??? Not everyone can even handle trying to work full time. People with disabilities are the most vulnerable.
Those of you who said that "when I was in school" shows a lack of understanding of today's college crises. I put myself through also. That is no longer possible today, as the price for housing at schools has gone up about 600% since then. There are no jobs for college students that will pay that kind of money. So even if you have a scholarship, you still have that cost to deal with. I salute those students for trying to stay in school, despite the odds. I cannot believe there are so many people who criticize them and laugh at their struggles, which are epidemic during these times. Instead of criticizing, maybe those of us who can, should do something to help with this problem. Not everyone is trying to get something for nothing. They want an education, and they need a stable place to live and food to eat during that time. Churches can help, teachers' groups, unions. YOU CAN HELP! Have a heart.

@@lookingforanswers4271 , I don't think it's b.s. but you are entitled to your opinion. My grand-daughter's housing at UCSB, is more than 10 times what mine was at UCI back in the day. All I am saying is that it is harder than ever to finance an education without ending up in debt for the rest of the foreseeable future. Congrats on your success. I was successful too. But these are hard times. I was asking people to have compassion, and not be so quick to criticize others

Those of us who have adult children and their rooms are available, if you have room for a college kid who is homeless, please do. You could charge help with walking the dogs or I prefer the "IF you get a B or above, you don't have to pay rent". If there is one near me, they can stay with me. Im near Arizona state.

@George Orwell my house was robbed once. It wasn't a college student.
Two years ago when I was a student at Rogue Community College in Grants Pass I knew of 3 students who were homeless, 1 of them lived in their car. I also knew of another student who lived on a couch at some house for $200 a month. But, with that said, I knew of a couple dozen or so who dropped out and simply got a job. College is a financial joke, it's some serious greed, especially the required books that constantly change every quarter.
As for me I ended up graduating. Couldn't find the job I wanted and ended up working as a long-haul truck driver at $1,100 a week. In the end I would have been better off not spending nearly $20,000 for college and just jumping into truck driving. I guess i'm the lucky one.

I had a good friend in graduate school who had to take a year-and-a-half off and work as a trucker in order to be able to pay tuition and finish his degree. I know it's hard, and so sorry u couldn't find a job after graduating. The salary of a trucker is *really* good. Nevertheless, I hope you're still proud of having graduated from Rogue Comm College because that is a great achievement and will *always* be of benefit to you as u go through life. No matter what degree or certificate u obtained, if u ever need or want to give up trucking, your having graduated from Comm College will serve u well.
And the self-driving trucks are coming to take that job away, too.
But if you keep working hard and company notices your education you can move up. Keep it up 👍
And, like so many drivers, that becomes your entire life. Behind a wheel, never seeing family, tending to a home, a yard, living with your family. It's a sad, hard life being an otr driver. Home, on average, four days out of a month is no life. I don't care how good the money is.
My whole life, I've always looked at homeless with respect, understand their hardship, and spares what little I have, but always enough for a fast food meal. Then in the winter of 2013 my kids and I was only days towards homelessness... at no fault of my own. I held a job and pay every bills on time. We have no clue that the house we were renting was foreclosed and auction off till we got an eviction notice from the new owner. At shelters waiting list aside.... we were told even if we can get in, no shelter have room to take all 4 of us in. And when you have young kids, to be separated is not an option.
I share my story in hope that the general public will look at the homeless with compassion, understanding, and do what little you can to help.
Just makes me want to cry 😭 all the money our government gives to foreign aid, why can we not help our own first?

Bunny boops Well Bunny boops I must be a part of a dying breed. My husband and I are in our sixties we have a ranch/farm and we have always strived to be self sufficient. We grow our own vegetables and herbs, our own meat and if you have done any of these things in your life then you’ll know that we always have surplus and that is above and beyond what we eat and store and can. I take all of my surplus into our little town and give it to people who have a need even this winter I have a huge surplus of eggs and I have freeze dried and stored fresh and I can still give my eggs away. Words are cheap “Bunny boop” and I resent your smug attitude and attaching politics to what I said, try thinking 🤔 with your heart unless it’s the size of a tiny raisin.

No one in my generation could afford be "self sufficient" with big ranch unless it was handed to them. And I highly doubt it's always been peachy keen for you, if you want to talk about smugness.
I work in financial aid office at a university in Atlanta n we have so many homeless students. It’s so sad I cry sometimes with them. Housing it 4200 a semester since it’s downtown Atlanta. Then we never have enough rooms for all the students. We have food bank but it offers very little help.
You cry? Why? You're a part of the system that is engaged in predatory exploitation of those homeless students, as well as the rest of them. I bet your university president is well heeled with many rooms to spare at his house. Those homeless students help fund all of it. If anything, you're probably being underpaid like the many adjuncts that teach classes for an abysmally low wage. These uni's are crooks. Financial aid? Such an untruth.
Most of these campuses are so old🙄built back in the 1800s and earlier...they need an upgrade and redesign their campuses😶,,they need to build in bigger areas where there is more land to build everything a campus would need instead of making everyone go all over the damn city looking for each building🙄....dorms in one area,, everything scattered..
I worked in financial aid when I was a student. (It was a work-study job.) I am curious, for the homeless students, why didn't they take out loans? Nobody likes loans but to me, it's better than being homeless. Wouldn't you agree?
@@jones2277 They do take out loans it is eaten up by tuition and fees. Tuition alone for instate where I work is about $5600 semester. There is a limit government give for loans each year. Keep mind that a lot of students do not qualify for private loan unless they have a co-signer. These days most parents can’t do that because of their credit. The parents can apply for the plus loan but a lot of parents don’t want to do that. Student under 23 most of the time is classified as a dependent student so the pell is based on the parents income.
@@sunnydaysatl I see. I went to school out-of-state. Also came from a family with a single parent and six kids so no money. I put myself on a schedule where I applied for scholarships every week. I created a spreadsheet. I actually applied for a lot of small scholarships because they tend to have smaller applicant pools. Between that, the grants, the loans, the work-study job, and my credit card, I was able to pay for my tuition, fees, and room and board. I even sent some money home to my mom when my loans were disbursed. My work-study job was in the financial aid office, so I actually learned a lot. I only took out the federal subsidized loans. I did all of these things knowing that I had the choice to go in-state or even go to a community college. I guess I don't understand why these students wouldn't just go to a community college rather than being homeless.
Makes me really glad that I have a place with my parents.
This story brought tears to my eyes. Schools have multimillion dollar stadiums, but we have homeless students? Priorities, right?

Meh, these days very few degrees are certain to lead to anything (best one might be nursing). Lots of engineering grads from good schools can't find any full time work because companies prefer to hire H1B folks from foreign countries, plus a lot of the older generation delay retirement until they are in their 70s.

I was a homeless student at SMC for one of the three years I went there. Now I'm one quarter away from graduating from UCI as a Computer Engineer.
I truly feel sorry for the young people. They are living in tough times. It's heartbreaking to see them homeless. This is not right and something needs to be done. Times have changed since the 1970's. So many people need a helping hand in these times.

It's March 2022 and I am sitting here crying as I listen to these stories. I have been homeless twice (as an adult) in my life so I know what They went through. So for those people with their harsh comments, it's best to not speak until you have walked a mile in their shoes. These kids were doing the best they could, as are the kids today going through the same thing in 2022. They ar not lazy and/or unmotivated. They are strong. I hope that Dom and the others found success in their later lives. God bless them all.

I lived in slums in college and I knew 3 homeless college students. Two lived in a tent in the woods and one lived in his van. I dumpster dived, begged restaurants for bread, and lived on very little. I applied for food stamps at one point and received them for a year but then the next year I was turned down. I felt like trash and was often treated as such. But I fought hard and did well in school. Now I make 6 figures. Still have sizeable debt but it was worth it. I will never forget what I went through. Create a goal for your life, make it happen, and don't forget what you had to go through to achieve it.

Where was this concern and reporting when a fellow student I knew was, I kid you not, LIVING IN A TREE on campus? Yeah and that was the late eighties. He came from a family of extreme poverty. There was no safety net for him. He still has a scar from the tree parasite infection.
I was in a similar situation, and had it not been for three jobs (one of which was at a pizza place where I could get a hot meal for 50 cents a day) I wouldn’t have made it through my undergraduate years. Ultimately it was the lack of transportation and housing that killed my attempts to attend grad school at UCLA. Again: The 1980s.
Gen X has a lot in common with the Millennials. We were just too small in numbers to change anything. The Boomers should be afraid. Very afraid.
Not all boomers feel that smug "I made it so can you ". But YOUR right, change is coming and it will jut them when they retire. Those in office won't care about their plight. They will be pinched as the new middle-class sacked with paying for what the government wants to ignore in infrastructure costs they themselves turned a blind eye to when they were busy making it. Hi, Georgina!!! I can't believe I happened to watch this video and read your comment! I used to attend the hooping meetups in that little park off of South First St in Austin years ago. A guy living in a tree on campus sounds like something that might happen at UT...though by choice and not as means of survival. I do hope to see more change as more and more seats in all levels of government are filled by gen x'ers and millennials.
How are we XGeners have anything in common?? I did not complete college, but was very resourceful, cutting out the meal plan, buying sacks of potatoes, living off campus as a boarder, working a full time job which was why I couldn't focus on studies, and so forth..I'm not knocking Millenials, but they should ask the older generation( us) for advice more often....

I’m currently a university student and was shocked during a zoom class that over 100 students are homeless and some live in their cars on campus !!!! Like wtf we have dorms !!!!
I was a high school valedictorian living with domestic violence; six months later I was homeless and enrolled in college.
It’s a shame.
I feel for these young adults. In highschool I lived in my car and in college (I'm in my second year) I'm couch surfing and debating moving back into my car. People don't talk about this enough. My parents don't care much about me and refuse to help in any way shape or form, yet, I'm punished and banished. Colleges should work on giving affordable living to students in need. There are nights where it feels like way too much for me. Like I won't amount to anything. It's unfair and it's true you try not to let anyone know what's going on in fear that their perception of you will chance. This being said, I'm one of the lucky ones and I'm thankful for everything that I have.
How are you doing now? Nobody should have to struggle like that. On top of all that, having your parents ignore your needs is so deeply devastating. My heart goes out to you

You should do a piece on their faculty being homeless. 70% of faculty are adjunct and live below poverty. A student has better odds not going to school. I am an adjunct professor. I pray every day to find a better career
I know how hard it is. I'm so glad he and so many others got the help they needed.
If a school can build a football stadium that can hold 100,000 people. You should be be able to build a few extra buildings for housing. It's sad to see people struggle when so many easy solutions could fix this problem. These colleges get millions donated to them. That should pay for free food for all students.
It's also interesting when religious affiliated colleges find money to build churches on campus, but can't find money to build affordable housing on campus.
I am a student at Chico State and I am not homeless, though I feel as if I have no home. I also have Social Security and I am overwhelmed by the trials of making it work. I had to learn frugal things, skip on social outings for I had other expenses, and I work jobs that help pay, but are limiting in what I can provide. I see many who are out of their comfort zone and trying to better their lives and see where they go. I struggle with Asperger's Disorder and I have PTSD, and I get through these challenges even though I wonder if I can make it through the day.
If I get that piece of paper saying otherwise, I know the struggle is real.

In California many of the Community Colleges have also expanded services to homeless students. Mt. San Jacinto College offers food assistance, shower facilities, and now by law provides overnight parking.

Felt really bad about the kid in DePaul University. My cousin went to DePaul in the late 90’s and back then, he had the benefit of the relatively low rentals.
I’d also add that he had his parents nearby in Darien, IL. They’re about as middle class as they come, living in the same house since the 70’s. But my cousin did everything on his own cause of their financial troubles.
i cried watching this. my friend was going to be homeless at my school so I let him stay on my sofa and i also babysit my neighbor's baby for free when she needs to go to class. I want to give whenever i can
I am 59, working full-time and I have been living in a minivan for 3 years.
California was supposed to institute a measure that allows community colleges to set aside a parking lot for students who live in their vehicle, so they have access to restrooms, showers, and security. God Bless these students doing the right thing getting an education. We need to explore all alternative housing choices, well-equipped vans, tiny houses, RVs.
This is wild. Housing can be ridiculously hard in college. I was rejected from student housing because I transferred so I had to figure out living off campus. Lucky enough a large number of students lived off campus and I was able to find a house with cheap rent, I had more than 12 housemates. When I would study late in the library I'd often see older homeless people reading or sleeping in their chairs. Most likely they bought a gym membership which gave them and ID and access to university facilities. I can't imagine going to classes while being homeless.
As a mother it breaks my heart. My daughter had my support while in college. She lived at home all I asked from her was good grades. These young people are doing the right thing. Colleges need to address this issue they are our future. I admire their strength.

there is something to be said about van dwelling. You are not homeless, but houseless. Vans and class B RVs are houses on wheels...
I follow some of the RV nomads on RUclips and I was surprised they can boondock on the side of the highway or city streets in California and Oregon. That's where I need to be, LOL.
And they are not cheap. Using her as example is not the same as someone who cannot afford housing.
It's a van with no kitchen or bathroom facility, therefore it is not a home. She is homeless.

I have a lot of respect for this girl. I admire her ambition and drive because she is sacrificing a lot just to get to the finish line. God bless her. I worked full time and attended college full time and it was all worth it.

I went to school under the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, after having served in the United States Army from 2000-2010. There is absolutely no way I could have afforded to pay my tuition, books, and housing without the financial support from the U.S. Treasury Department. Having said that, higher education is not a right as a U.S. citizen, it's a privilege and as unfortunate as the situation is, there's people in this world who are worse off. I hope that universities and colleges (community colleges, 4-year institutions, and post-graduate schools) can provide better resources and make it more affordable for their students.

These students are well aware that trade schools are an option, but guess what? It's up to the individual to decide what path they want to take in life. In fact many students don't even bother studying in America at all and instead move to France or Germany. Unlike you, I don't believe that America is the only place to get a great affordable education regardless if it's a trade school or a university. lmao mentioning trade schools on a video about homeless college students is seriously off topic anyway, especially since going to a trade school doesn't necessarily mean a student has less of a chance of being homeless. We are taught to go to school to better ourselves only, but what use is there in education if a generation of millennials can’t recognize their fellows mates. I would feel like crap going to sleep knowing that a student my age is sleeping at a bench.
It’s not like people don’t see this growing problem, everyone has seen a dozen homeless people and probably didn’t even think the circumstances that led to it or how that person feels at the time. It feels inhuman, you start looking at squirrels and realize that being human is somehow a burden. You sit there hungry and dogs sometimes stare at you as if “ I wish I could help you buddy”.
Why do we even have schools if we as a nation cannot solve a simple problem as homelessness? Yet we continue to see more gentrification. Now that this issue is starting to affect middle class whites it’s becoming an issue. But when are we going to learn to move in one accord? Life is simple. Apparently not, Shelters are prisons by the way. No difference.
Ayi, I worked at a mission where I met some young black women who had been in prison. They said there was much more freedom in prison than in the shelter.
