      I want capsule bed shelters for homeless people because capsule beds can shelter more people per sq. ft. than a tiny home. I designed a shelter that fits 2,000 homeless people into two 3-story 80' x 200' buildings all because capsule beds allow dense populations. In my design, the homeless people share a kitchen/living room & bathroom which saves even more on money because you don't have to build them each their own kitchen and bathroom. They can share them instead. The capsules could be 100% free charity if they were cheap enough to build, then nobody would ever have to sleep on the streets. If the city spent $10 million or so (i don't know the actual cost) on building my homeless shelter design, then they could eradicate all the homelessness in the entire city. Living in capsule beds isn't ideal, but it sure beats sleeping on the dirty cold hard streets. In the shelter, they'd get free showers, free meals (from their community farm all 2,000 residents are required to maintain), and a free capsule bed to sleep in from the city.

      @Moose Garner The cause of the mental health issues is usually drugs, so there would be no drugs allowed in the facility. They'd probably adapt to their new surroundings, in most cases, happily. Sleeping in a capsule bed is much more comfortable than sleeping on a dirty sidewalk. The capsule beds could feature metal screens to help keep them safe from other homeless people while they sleep. Another problem is noise, but the facility could give out earplugs at night & have a curfew to help people sleep. They can still go outdoors. They'd be free to go wherever they want in the daytime. I know it's far from perfect, but I think it'd improve the homeless situation on a large scale. A capsule bed is also pretty affordable if you construct it out of cheap materials like lumber and metal. The capsule beds could have a lumber or metal frame and be covered with a stainless steel surface for easy cleaning to prevent the spread of disease. I'm thinking the simpler, the better. Because a simple facility is cheaper, easier to clean, and less stressful in general. I agree the plan could use some improvements, but I'm just putting it out there for people to improve it.

    • @rebekahmoore3570
      @rebekahmoore3570 5 лет назад +6

      Yasu Leone if you make that the case, there should be regular drug tests done also. Not saying that people on drugs don’t deserve a place to stay, but being on drugs will cause more problems. Ex: stealing and violence. The tiny homes work in Oregon, but your idea would be a lot better suited to a larger city like New York where there is a much more dense population. You could have it like this place where each person would be assigned their own capsule so that they would have their own space and they would be able to stay until they can get a job and get permanent housing. This is a good idea, it just needs some more work.

      I agree. Even other parts of the world follow the housing model first and then they address the cause of homelessness. It is smart that this state follows this. I hope California is smart and will follow this model.

      The American government has the money & resources to fix this.
      It's the system of government that is designed wrong. Presidents are incentivised into giving money to the rich - because the rich donate cash back to the election campaigns.
      With the stroke of a pen, this could be repaired overnight. By taxing the rich. And by banning all political donations entirely. And by banning political profiteering.
      But, the American system was not designed for this to be possible. Not unless an honest set of political leaders are found on BOTH sides. And, both political parties seem miles away from achieving that.

The residents still have to pay 250-300 per month for rent and if we're going to be completely honest it isn't possible to survive on food stamps alone for food unless you're skipping every other meal and eating rice with tomatoes so these people still have to work, we're just making sure they aren't sleeping on the streets where it's much harder to get yourself in a better situation.

    Being homeless was one of the most difficult,desperate, lonely, shameful parts of my life. It eats away at your soul when you are disregarded and set aside. On the flip side, I've met some of the kindest, most generous people when I was homeless. I've learned to be grateful for things I took for granted. I realized that suffering creates a new sense of appreciation, and hardships build strength and perserverance. And God is much more concerned with our character than our comfort. Just a little food for thought ; sometimes God takes away all the distractions so we can better hear His voice.

      In Miami too it's so many homeless everywhere in this city especially downtown and under all our expressways they've built camp there you see tents everywhere I once was doing laundry in my old apt complex was in real bad part of town saw a couple came in there to do laundry I ended up deciding to have lunch with them and talk while I washed I saw they had no where to pack their clothes so I gave them few trash bags the guy told me when it's December he uses them as a sleeping bag to stay warm. Some people aren't all drug/alchohol addicts or criminals they simply just lost their job sad to see the city does nothing to help

It’s absolutely vulgar that California as well as other cities there are working HOMELESSNESS/WORKING POOR....makes NO sense....evil Greed, lack of empathy and so much more....sheesh my heart aches. I lived was raised and liven in Cali all my life and when I retired I had to move to another state because I knew that I could NOT of continued to afford to live in my home state on my pension....relocating as a senior and leaving EVERYTHING you’ve known is not easy....but I stay in gratitude attitude for what do have. 😘

    It's a really sad thing that in Americ-a that a person can work 40 hours a week and still not be able to afford to pay rent somewhere. Something is wrong within the system. We all know to well that the "rich" have and make too much......too many of them come from $$ and too many of them get paid a ridiculous amount of money for what they do. There are people that work their fingers to the bone and do very hard work and don't get paid a decent amount. No-one should be homeless if they are working......also our vets on the streets should never be left homeless. Someone(many of us) need to fight all the red tape and all the crazy "laws" that are in place that only help the upper class. I live in a very small community, we may have a few homeless behind the scenes but if I lived in a city or town that actually had this many homeless that needed a helping hand I would be trying my best to find a way to help them out and to bring awareness to this growing problem.

      The rent is too high, the pay scale doesn't match the economy that we live in. Too much money being taken out for taxes and health insurance, by the time you bring your check home you can't afford nothing. Car insurance is high for a 2011 Altima, no traffic or accident in record, still paying over $200 for insurance. Then you have to pay for water, gas, electric, food and other expenses. We don't go out, don't have the time because we're always at work. Living it right now as well as looking for another job. My husband and I both work long hours. He's a Plumber Pro and I'm a Nurse. Combined income of $70,000 is just not enough money to take care of our family with just having 2kids. We are living pay check to pay check barely surviving.

    • @Rebreakings
      @Rebreakings 4 года назад +16

      i mean if the village is on one lot they can use that as the address, then the owner of the lot can pass the mail to the person it belongs to. Not sure if that would work but its an idea.

      Can you provide evidence that you cannot get a job without a permanent address.

    • @tohrurikku
      @tohrurikku 3 года назад +10

      @@fozzybear8878 For tax reasons when you start a job you have to give your information and as proof of identity for taxes you need an address. If you do not have an address you are not a tax payer therefor not a recognized citizen. You can not even vote without an address. This is why a lot of politicians do not care for homeless people. Also, to get social services (at least where I live) you have to prove you have an address (you still have to file your taxes when you are on social services and as part of rent you are helping pay the landlord's property tax). Some homeless people get around this by using someone else's address, but that can be considered fraud (they are not paying taxes for living at that address. Remember, no taxes = not a citizen). You also have to prove you are a citizen, have a job permit, or are a permanent resident to get a job. If you can not do that then you are not legally allowed to have a permanent job. (They can not properly tax you otherwise)

    • @fozzybear8878
      @fozzybear8878 3 года назад +2

      @@tohrurikku Thanks for your reply and your interest. In Australia, we still pay taxes no matter where we live- the tax dept doesn;t care if you live under bridge- you will still pay taxes to the full extent. Employment and housing are separate here. Here, if you had a GPO box as an address, the employer would just think you had a crazy stalker and likely never mention your housing situation ever.

    • @tohrurikku
      @tohrurikku 3 года назад +4

      @@fozzybear8878 It is nice that over there your employers are so easy going, but here some employers would raise their eyebrows if you have a p.o. box and a lot of employers hire people on the basis of where the prospective employee lives. If you live out of town and there is a major snow storm you would not be able to come into work because the highway would be closed. Employers do not like situations like that so they avoid hiring people who will have a hard time coming to work. They would also chose the person who lives closer to the place of employment to ensure that the employee comes in every day. So your address is very important here when you are applying for a job. Where I live and how I expect to come to work has been a topic of conversation on pretty much every job interview I have ever had.
      Homeless people here are often living off the grid and can not do their taxes. Honestly, expecting a homeless person to do their taxes is unfathomable.
      To get a post office box is not that easy, you not only need the money to get one (they are not cheap) but you also need two pieces of Id as well and a lot of homeless people do not have that. There are programs to help people to get their basic id if they are low income. I can not attest on what requirements you would need to be able to utilize these programs so I can not say how effective it would be for a homeless person. Still, I do not think it would not be enough for the required Id needed to get a post office box.

      Where I live in Europe, if someone becomes homeless due to bad luck and has no family, its the main news in local newspaper. Community helps them out, sometimes buying them old trailer home, sometimes Church builds them a new home if they have children, or the County gives them flat or old house to live in in case nobody else wants to deal with it. I see people in California not caring at all for homeless, European Union should put sanctions and ban all non essential products from California, for 1 month, just to shock them, and especially sanction all Cal. Government officials taking tax money and pretending to help the homeless doing stupid studies and 5-year plans, while blocking private initiative . No Facebook, no RUclips, no Intel processors, no nice surfboards etc. for one month. Because if that social complacency spreads to Europe, it will be worse than Asian viruses.

We became friends and I would visit him to chat and just get to know him. He was on a waiting list for low income housing and he said the only way he could get the housing someone would have to drop out or die. He got an infection last winter and did not make it. I always get sad thinking of how he almost had housing. I really felt bad that I didnt offer shelter. And I wonder if he had opportunity at a tiny housing community like this how it would have changed the quality of his life. He was adopted and had no living family and died w no kids or wife. He had other homeless friends and I feel blessed to call him a friend bc he taught me again what is most important in life...love ❤️rip Scott

      A Discourse well they aren’t meant to be permanent homes that money could probably be better spent building a higher volume of homes rather than amenities. I know it sounds harsh but you have to remember it’s temporary to get them on their feet and you’d help more people that way. Solar panels and batteries and installation isn’t cheap.

    Excellent initiative from Eugene, Oregon! Absolutely brilliant concept of providing tiny homes for those in need, and to provide essential facilities for the community. The US (and the world) needs more communities like these, which in the long term can solve the homeless/housing crisis. Kentrel is such a lovely young man, so humble and grateful for what he has. I hope this inspires more organizations, churches and other people to start these tiny home communities so that homeless people can at least a roof over their heads. Well done!

I myself am disabled from a motorcycle crash and can barely afford my place, my brother wanted to buy a house with a large backyard so I could purchase a small readybuilt house and move it onto the lot. We thought it would save me money and help but the city wont allow it, and would cost me the same I'm paying now. I dont understand what it bothers them for, especially if its family sharing the land. But you cannot have two living spaces on one land without paying the same taxes for both. :(. I even joked at one point about living in his shed in the backyard but the city wont even allow that because it's not "code" lol.

    I lived in SLC, Utah my whole life and I never saw this. Maybe in the year 1/2 they put these there? I think this is an amazing solution to the problem. Everybody deserves to have a roof over their head. No one, no one should ever be homeless. Nor should they have to sleep somewhere where they don't feel safe. In my opinion this is a good solution. One step at a time, just grows into more steps of getter closer to a better solution.

  • @MattLantian

    I've lived in Eugene and it's heartbreaking and also frustrating how little the government does to try and solve the problem. I would like to see more of this but taken further. Maybe "tiny" apartment blocks that could home many more in the same space. Communal gardens, activities, and responsibilities that would help the residents readjust to "normal" life if needed. Job placement programs and maybe even partnerships with businesses, which they could easily use as amazing PR.
    Eugene and many cities in the Northwest currently face a massive influx of residents, an inability to keep up with the demand for housing, and raising prices for rent and ownership. It's no wonder there are so many homeless. Whether my answer is the right one or not, there has to be a way to solve this if the right people got behind it for the brains and the financing.

      Corvid Pilkington because the government is not there to help you. It exists to live off you. They supply a few programs etc to keep public from rioting but that’s about it.

    • @sonofhibbs4425
      @sonofhibbs4425 5 лет назад +3

      Corvid, I agree. And I love the ideas you share. There are so many people who just need some help being lifted back on their feet again. There are people who are going to struggle due to disability. This is a nation of plenty- there’s no reason why projects like this can’t be done. I’d imagine too getting volunteers to build the homes wouldn’t be a problem either. It’s just that the ideas have to be run and governed- it’s the red tape and bureaucracy that hold this back. I’m certain many citizens would want this for our unfortunate homeless. If someone would start this- tiny homes for homeless- I’d be one of the first to help in any way.

    One minute you could be loving a middle class lifestyle. Next you could end up lossing everything. This helps people start over. It also helps them re-adapt into society. Everyone should be able to afford housing. No matter where they work. Life is too expensive and people too greedy

      When I bought my house last year, I kept enough $$$ on the side to cover the repayments for 2 years. It makes me sleep better knowing that should some unlikely event happen - such as a global pandemic - I will not become instantly homeless.

    My brother is living in a subsidized studio apartment after about a decade being on the streets/transient. He's part of the subsidized health care system, too, and he has food stamps and there are good public funded pantries. When he first showed up to town he looked like a zombie with his eyes half shut and glazed over. He is so much better now. His meds seem to be better adjusted and he has regular appointments. He cooks meals and helps his community with computers, painting, and small engine repair. He's smart, but perhaps bipolar and autistic. I doubt he will ever have a "real job", no matter how I encourage him. He's always been that way where he works really hard, but kind of gets overwhelmed and burns out. I can't take care of him because I can barely take care of my self, so I am thankful for these types of places. I'm not sure what his future holds, and what would happen if places like this didn't exist. I'm guessing the world would be a much more dangerous place. The housing helps more than anything. There is always food in my town, but having that place to call "his" gives him a place to build some kind of healthier life and even give back to his community, even if it is helping other transient folks. Some of the people I meet around him could probably use longterm inpatient care, some probably are just passing through and back onto the streets or death, but many of them are like my brother and seem to be healing, having odd jobs, and getting the physical and mental health care they need.
