  • Correction: If you fail this mission but get the Huge Materia from the rocket later, you can get Ultima from the boy in the tent
    ---
I investigated the criteria for obtaining Catastrophe, and the bit used for it was just one used after the North Corel Huge Materia mission under all circumstances. I then look on the web and almost all websites said you had to complete the mission to be able to get it.
And while the circumstances for the Huge Materia and Ultima are well-known, not many people know about the third scenario altogether. A player is given ten minutes of time to catch up with the train, fight five fights, and stop the train at the end. It is unlikely a player will struggle to catch up with the train for ten minutes. I only discovered the scenario existed when GarlandTheGreat uploaded his video about it ( • Final Fantasy VII - Co... ).
So the first scenario is stopping the train, and for this you get the Huge Materia, and Ultima for free, and you can get Catastrophe. The second scenario is jumping on but not stopping the train, and for this you get the opportunity to buy Ultima (for 50000 gil), and you can get Catastrophe. And for not catching up with the train? You can get Catastrophe, Ultima Materia is stuck in the well forever, and no Huge Materia.
One thing I find interesting about this scenario is if you don't catch up with the train, the train is never seen again and Shinra get away with the Huge Materia. However, if you catch up with the train and jump on it, the driver will crash the train into North Corel. Why do that? He has a friggin' wolframite giant, Wolfmeister, on the back of his train, yet it's only if we're on the train does he kill himself. I suspect the event was designed for killing the driver but not stopping the train. Either that or the driver jumped at opportunity to take out three members of AVALANCHE/the party.

In the third scenario your team is surprisingly optimistic with you considering what a horrible job you just did.

so this has 2 alternate outcomes? because I wanted to check because while I was looking through the local game files I found one where it crashes and one where it doesn't so I can just crash the train apparently?

According to a change you made to the Ultima Materia article on the FF wiki back in January, you can still acquire the Ultima Materia if you fail to catch up to the train but successfully complete the Shinra No.26 mission. What you didn't specify however is, in that case, is the Ultima Materia obtained for free or do you have to purchase it for 50000 Gil?

It is free. If you succeed the mission but your Materia inventory is full, the boy will not give you the Ultima Materia, but you can talk to him in the tent to get it. When speaking to him, the game checks whether he has already given you the Ultima Materia and whether you have obtained the Huge Materia. Therefore, if you fail the mission but get the Huge Materia later, those two things are true and you gain access to the Materia. So as far as he is concerned, you may as well have saved the town and are given it free of charge.

Edit: You have to push both up buttons and both down buttons. It's weird.

Can you still get the huge materia?

No. If you fail to stop the train then that particular Huge Materia is gone, and you also can no longer get Bahamut Zero later

@@galaxybounce1002 Not true. You can still get the green Huge Materia if you get the Materia from the rocket later, whose colour depends on which Huge Materia you have previously managed to obtain. Check the Huge Materia article on the wiki for more details.
