I’d like to hear your 3 car garage but with a twist. 1. A car from the year you were born. 2. A car from the year you passed your test. 3. A brand new car.
Being a couple of generations younger I didn't live through the headrest thing. However, I think your feelings are comparable to what I felt back then when Xenon headlights first appeared. I remember society being divided between those who had Xenon headlights and scum. When you came across the blue flash on the highway you knew there was a winner behind the wheel. It happened on a country road at night. There was this moment when everything would lit up and while your father cursed the glare and the bastard behind it, you would sit in the back preparing sight and hearing in an attempt to identify the beast that was about to devour your sad halogen lights in an overtake. I remember when my father bought his first car with xenon headlights. Starting it became an extraordinary ritual. Turn the ignition, an immediate blue flash would hit the wall in a perfectly even line and the height correction would kick in, sparing the lives of the future vehicles ahead. Outstanding thing. Greetings from Barcelona.
SAAB used to have a winter driving handbook. Some great tricks....900's had the handbrake working on the front wheels.....you could fool the car into thinking it had a LSD by putting the handbrake on a few notches! Also if the front wheel drive weight transference foiled your attempt to climb a snowy incline....turn the car around and climb the hill in reverse....fish tailing from lock to lock if necessary. Man, I miss that brand from the market.
Excellent, I wanted to join in so much! headrests, I was obsessed! When my dad came home in 1984/5 with a Cavalier CD in brown with 4 brown velour headrests and a CAR PHONE with an aerial, I felt like we were lottery winners (spot the ball then). Headrests were the ONLY item of spec that mattered. Back then no-one had a BMW, not in Lancashire anyway. in a high school with 1,000 students only one person got dropped off in a BMW, and it was a 518i, but still, 4 headrests AND they went skiing! Talk about local millionaire. I think the headrest phenomenon came from Ford & Vauxhall's L / GL / Ghia(CD) L = no headrests, GL = front headrests, Ghia = Front & Rear headrests. All that mattered was the badge on the boot and the headrest count. Mk4 2.3 Ghia Cortina in Gold with Brown velour! I mean, that was IT, you had arrived. Tyres, no difference? Try driving any McLaren LT on Trofeo tyres in a drizzly November and then do the same on MPS4S and tell me no difference? I once had a Volvo 740 with full winter tyres. Drove 300 miles on a deserted M6 at midnight in a blizzard in standing snow with no issues at all. 3 years later, Audi B7 RS4 to Europe in snow, on summers, the scariest drive of my life (apart from driving up the Mangart saddle in a thunderstorm in a Boxster). Tyres SOOOOOOO important.
Ed makes a good point re: expensive EVs where the buyer purchases via PCP. I bought my 4s 12 months ago on PCP and for sure, I’ll be handing it back to Porsche GB in another 24 months after enjoying a great EV which I can charge for 7.5p per KW and against which I pay zero road tax and dust many a yooth who fancy their chances. It then becomes the problem of Porsche GB !
I adore this podcast! It's genuis! All the topics I used to chat about with my car mates, it's serious geek porn! But.......I do feel sorry for Manish sometimes. His points and questions do get overlooked a little. The poor guy is clearly super polite and tries to chat, but always gets talked over lol! Give the man his voice!
Lets see a program designed, by the group of course, with one single goal in mind. To try and reveal the detailed nature of what a true driver feels and understands when behind the wheel. How we use our backside, fingertips and toes to constantly draw report on the chassis. Using vision to chase the unachievable perfection of Senna smooth transitions. Neil has the detail oriented mindset to become a capable driver I believe. It would be thrilling for us to see and hear Neil synthesize what that connection to a car feels like. I for one would love for him to experience what I consider to be one of the great joys of life itself. He is open and ready to meet the master and he is looking to Mr. Harris for the lessons. All I ask is that you please film and share. Maybe start with one of the cars he has significant seat time in and start on winter tires for some laps then summers. In dry and wet, and to see Harris walking him through how to feel the car. Sharing this with someone like Neil, who already greatly appreciates the art of driving, would make for an absolutely fascinating story. Maybe even a mini series..
A few take aways from listening to this... Neil doesn't drive his cars that hard around corners.👀 I know a lot more about cars than I sometimes give myself credit for. Ed not understanding the importance of headrests in the back of cars makes me realise that I'm old.😁 _ A great listen, loved it.
As a continental European I have to set the record straight on the topic of winter tires on this overwise superb podcast: - winter tires reduce your MPG! - the winter tire period is November 1 to March 31 and is mandated by law. If you do not run your car on winter tires and get into an accident, your insurance company will refuse to payout as you broke the law. It's not just for fun. - winter tires have a noticeably extended braking distance in summer and wear per mile goes up as the heat does so running winter tires in European summers is very much NOT recommended! - though most people opt for two sets of wheels (most commonly a set of alloys for the summer and steelies for winter since the ever-present salt on motorways and streets batters alloys) and just have the full sets swapped in November, a large portion of people have just the tires swapped for winter. - you don't always have your tires/wheels stored for you. I would even say most people take their second set of wheels home and keep them in their garage, or in a cellar of a flat. Once they need them, they fold the seats down and load them into the car, call the tire shop for an appointment and drive there and let them change them. - if people have two sets of wheels, they often change them themselves. If you live in a flat, Manish, you usually take your car to a car park outside of operating hours and just swap them there or do it on the street. It's a pretty common sight (Austria). - as Chris C. explained - winter tires are softer compared to summer tires so ride quality improves after changing. - seasonal tire swapping stores open up just for the early November and early April periods, often just people with a lift in a garage and a wheel gun who will swap or rebalance the wheels for a tenner or two. Otherwise, great listen as always!
We picked up an i3 last year. It's absolutely perfect for the school run and scooting to the supermarket. Agree on the motorway stability issue 😱 Another cracking episode chaps.
PS4S at above 0 degrees dry road is better than winters at 10. Just bought a set for my turbo and they will be the last set. And yes there were shortages for the rear tires so I had go for a size narrower.
My wife has 'all season' tyres on her car which is also four wheel drive. She gets about 30k miles out of them even with the very hot 2022. In cold weather they are outstanding, and on the few occasions there has been snow, it is unstoppable. Unless you are a track day enthusiast, all- season is the way to go in the UK....saves all that problem with swopping/storing too.
Another joy to spend 70 minutes of my life in your company this weekend. Modern Winter/cold weather tyres are engineering masterpieces. It is right that since the years 2011\13 we have hardly had reason to need them in lots of the UK, for snow and ice, but what a difference they make. I had an E350 CDI on winter tyres, my wife an ML350 on Summer rubber but 4 wheel drive in 2012 when the snow came. I went up our steep drive with no drama on packed, frozen snow, the ML got nowhere and then managed to do a slow motion 4 wheel slide and pirouette into a bush. They are also great in the wet. No one mentioned all season tyres that are available now that have the necessary mountain and snowflake symbol for continental regulations. A bit noisier and they wear a bit more in the heat, but a good choice for Northern and rural areas of the UK.
Why allow the 20% minge constituency to determine policy? Listening to them is how all this cancel culture sh894te started. Make Collecting Addicts great again and bring back music chat! You said it yourself Chris, THE MUSIC IS INTEGRAL to the experience of driving!!!!!!
Im sorry you’re a horrible bigoted person and that fact prevents you from getting laid. Or anybody in your life taking you seriously. Seriously though what is with all the misogyny so unnecessary. Have you not developed a vocabulary that allows you to express yourself without leaning on bigoted unfounded nonsense. I guess i answered my self with the joke above its who you are 🤷
Gents, this episode is approaching peak car nerd. Some of your best work to date. The pure joy of listening to other 50-something car guys talk about 1980s headrests is to be celebrated. To be completely nerdy. The accurate description of the Ford Mk2 RS Escort head restraints was either Roll Top or Fishnet and black or chocolate. Ergo the infamous RS 2000 with the "Chocolate Fishnets".
Manish, feel you brother. I too can't talk cars with my better half who also didn't change her last name, (which I bring up now and again). I talk cars with the kiddos & others. Can't convince non-car peeps. Pick you battles wisely brother
I feel very very sorry for Manish at 1:03:48 . I think all of them need to plan a fun day out/trek with all their better halves, partake in some fine dining, and let their wives persuade Manish's wife. If that doesn't work, divorce or clandestine man-cave/car garage that that wife does not know about.
I hadn't really remembered the emotional motivation I had to have a car with rear head restraints, but your discussion brought those memories back to life. Indeed, they were the coolest things ever, and to have a car that had them was proof that you had "made it", and that you had "class". The early 80s cars that had big glass houses (like the Holden VB Commodore SL/E) really showed off the rear head restraints with purpose, for all to see and admire. Thanks for the memories!
Love the deep dive into the significance of rear headrests for those of us over 50. I remember huge respect for a friend that that had 1989 Ford Orion Ghia with rear headrests back in the day. Glad also to see the briefest appearance an (R171) SLK55 (interior) as part of the air scarf discussion on Headrests.
listening further on... I would love to invite you to the Nordic with all year tires... take a 911 with all year tires VS real winter tires and you will learn a true insight
@@hansahlborg and there's nordic versions of winter tyres sold in Europe, and I don't mean studded winter tyres which are also used in the Nordics and Baltics, I mean studless winter tyres, these have special softer rubber mixture for colder area in the north of Europe. Central Europe versions of the same tyre have harder rubber mixture and higher allowed max speed.
A couple of suggested discussion points: 1. Describe a time you said "watch this" and you pulled it off. And a time you didn't. 2. Continuing on the wife theme... What's the worst lie you've told her to cover up your addiction?
I think Chris would appreciate this, I've poured a whisky and I am buckling in for this episode for the next 1 hr 10 mins. Tremendous work gentlemen, brilliant as always. I need to sit in my cars rear seat to ensure the head rest is appropriate for my passengers.
@@simons4474 Yep. Fishnets. I remember them in my dad’s (and the rest of his mates’) MK2 RSs in the ‘80s. They had such a huge impact on me as a boy that, when I get them re-trimmed, I’m going to have the harness holes in the wingbacks of my RS4 filled with the same mesh. Just a nod to one of earliest car memories.
The best thing and the highlight of my week. I'm with Neil on tyres, maybe I'm not driving a supercar but to me they are all the same and I'll always choose the cheapest. Regarding Manish's next car if I only drove 700 miles a year, I wouldn't bother buying a car and would hire one when needed. Great podcast, keep going gents
2 car garage: You are the proprietor of a new car rental business called ‘Two Car Gary’. You have a large fleet available at a wide range of European holiday destinations. However, you offer only two models. 1. A family estate. 2. A convertible. You can mix brands but the cars must be the same model year.
I do remember the rear headrest era. So much so I would proudly lift the rears to the highest prominent position… even though the rear seats were hardly ever used.
E30 convertible had to have rear headrests!! We were fitting rear headrests in 205GTI’s too, you could weld a strap across the rear seat back and they dropped in. We had a CX with those 3 stud headrests, DS had them too.
Owning a car(or any material gadgetry thing) for several years makes you appreciate it more and understand it more. You discover it’s nuances. It makes you focus less on the car and enjoying the driving more. I think Neil is swapping cars so often he has never experienced this and let alone have time to experience what a difference a tires make….la la la. And please let Manish speak music for a minute and two at the end. Great show, keep going!
Yep i kinda get what Neil means about the tyres 😅 also, in addition to the Strada 130TC, the Fiat 127 1300 GT Series 3 also had fishnet headrests, i know cos it was my first car!! Love the show guys, keep it up 👏
2 car garage - niche edition! 70k for both but you want everyone to see how much you know about cars! So you want something different and unique. The stipulation is that the cars have to have sold less that 2,000 units from new.
Winter / cold weather tyres are a thing of wonder. My wife is Czech so we drive to Czech in summer and winter every year, where like Germany it is pretty much law to have winter tyres from Nov to March. At risk of being labelled an Audi W*nker, I have a Q7 now but prior to this had an A6 Allroad (C7). When shod with Continental Winter Contact Tyres that thing felt like it could drive up Mount Everest base camp. The Allroad / Winter tyre combo also gives you the warmest smuggest feeling you've ever had when we have two inches of snow in the UK and everything grinds to a halt. Registering on the various lists / Facebook pages and making sure the local nurses and doctors get to and from work makes you feel like a god. An added bonus is when you have dropped off all your passengers on a snowy night, on the way home you head to that beautifully lit car park you know (in my case the local swimming pool car park) where there is a beautiful blanket of untouched virgin snow. Promptly turn the traction and ESP off and spend the next 30 mins creating a Picasso masterpiece in the snow. You will never go to bed with a bigger smile on your face and a warmer feeling in your heart.
Love the podcasts from a bunch of car geeks!!! High on coffee, a bit of vino or just cars!! Edward Lovett (the assassin) , Manish Pandey (just a complete legend!), Neil Clifford (spontaneous car buyer, loves the f bomb), Chris Cooper (the grand tourer but he can seriously hustle a race car), Chris Harris (car nerd to the MAX)
Re wintertires, Scandinavia has a different wintertire than rest of Europe, and there's a big difference between a good winter tire and summer tires on slippery roads. Also, a mean temp of 5-6 degrees, will definitely give you nights and days were the temp is below zero, and frosty.
Yeah, it’s a night and day difference. I’d also recommend DCC as the passive dampers can be quite firm when driving normally. No other options are necessary.
Loving it! Neil put me onto the new Stones album & i thank him dearly for that. Whole Wide World is my favorite track that I relate to in my life right now. So, 2 car garage. Which car would be the best to drive into a swimming pool at a party and which car would be best to be killed in today? Obviously you have to be legends whose status will be elevated to godlike by this lunacy.
I grew up in the 70’s and spent my formative years in the back seats of Vauxhall Vivas and Victors. Most cars in those days had no headrests at all. Our first car with front headrests was a ‘79 Volkswagen Derby. My Dad had really made it when he got a Sierra Sapphire GLS 2.0 IE4 company car with integral headrests.
I remember when my parents upgraded from a mk1 escort to a mk1 capri and they bought headrests to slide onto the front seats probably from halfords... it was the coolest thing i had ever seen.
2 car garage : No budget, ideal 2 car garage for your current situation. Describe your car situation briefly and the 2 cars best suited for you. Cheers from India
I had a Merc AMG A45 on 19" rims which came on Continentals. In the cold, the tyre walls bent during full-lock manoeuvring, making a very disconcerting clunking noise and feedback through the steering wheel. Changed to Michelins and the problem went away. Bizarre.
Thank you Neil for mentioning the Corrado: from many angles it looks all wrong, but whether it's the G60 or the VR6, I still want one. When I was 13 or 14, I found out how to drive on a Massey-Ferguson 35.
Hopefully not. Top Gear is finished. Lost its brilliance many years ago. This podcast/RUclips show is absolutely brilliant as it is. Let’s enjoy it whilst it lasts.
Fellow Addicts - why oh why is it acceptable for Exhausts to now be separated from the tail pipes and why do we often see silver plastic trim that’s 5” oval but then a minute 2” pipe just stuck behind it. STOP IT
Some rear headrests were a bit 'mean looking'. Shadows had good RHR's, but Rover P5B out did them all with the opulent 'ET' versions. I remember the E3 BMW 3.3 Li rear headrests looked very executive.
Two-car garage for next week: unlimited budget, must be on sale today, and you can’t use any other cars. Neil needs to do some driving on snow to see the enormous difference between summer and winter tyres. Taycans will be a real bargain when they are sub £25k.
Question for the group, cars you tried to pursuade someone else to buy, whether they asked or not? For me, 1999, 17 years old, I tried to talk my Mum into an E-Type Jag, red, 4.2, coupe. Told her it'd be worth more in the future, she'd had an MG GT, Golf GTI, XR2.. but the E-Type was a step too far @£16k! and she got a new VX Corsa Sport, I was so dissapointed. Tried to make up for it ever since.
When I was very young my dad had a Triumph 2500s , he traded it in for a Mini Metro city ! Ultimate poverty spec , vinyl seat , no headrests , no radio , no parcel shelf and only one mirror . I absolutely hated that car ,4 speed box and 45 bhp , hideous little thing .
Two Car Garage: You’re Doc Brown in a reboot of Back to the Future franchise. 2023 is your present and you’re traveling / going back to 1973. Choose your 2023 brand new car for being the “time machine” and a 1973 (or pre-1973) car for Marty McFly to drive around / car chase in Hill Valley.
I might be wrong but as far as I know, winter tyres are actually not mandatory in Germany but are recommended. You do not legally have to be wearing winter tyres in Germany but if you are involved in an accident without winter tyres you are considered to be driving without proper care and attention. Personally I’d recommend fitting them in winter, no matter what the law might say.
Not a two car garage scenario but a suggestion for a topic of conversation. What is your favourite start up sequence? The feel of the key turning in the barrel, a dial sweep, the hum of the fuel pump, the way the engine fires into life??? I used to love the start up procedure in my dad's old TVR T350t
Weirdly the Suzuki Ignis Sport of 2002 came with factory Fishnet headrest Recaro seats with yellow piping. Seats generally worth more than the rest of the car if you found one nowadays.
I’d like to hear your 3 car garage but with a twist.
1. A car from the year you were born.
2. A car from the year you passed your test.
3. A brand new car.
1. Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4
2. BMW M3 E30 - 215 HP AK05
3. Audi RS6 Performance
1. Ford Lotus Cortina
2. Peugeot 205 1.6GTi
3 Aston Martin DB12 Volante
1. Porsche 356A (1956)
2. Porsche 911S (1971)
3. Porsche 4S Targa. Yes, I am a very sad case
1. Jaguar E-type FHC
2. Peugeot 205 GTI
3. Bentley Continental GT
Porsche 928, escort cosworth, GMA T33 spider

Don’t agree on your mpg claim. I switch to winter tyres every winter and my mpg is the same.

Felt so sad for manish when he was narrating the story. I hope my future partner can atleast feign interest as I will.
Very enjoyable as always 👍
And I thought I was the only one who was obsessed with rear headrests and a central arm rest as child, I kept quiet about it all these years.
Thank you as always, brilliant. Ambush should definitely sell everything and live in shed next to his cars! Be bold and enjoy it!

The early 80s cars that had big glass houses (like the Holden VB Commodore SL/E) really showed off the rear head restraints with purpose, for all to see and admire. Thanks for the memories!
Neil. Congrats on getting your Boxer on the front cover of Octane magazine. Bella Macchina!
Netty head rests of the 2.0s and 3.0s Capris. Then my first XR3i A reg 1984 with cushion head rests. Luxury. 😁
Being a Swede living in real winter... Winter tires is a real thing in snow and ice 😂
listening further on...
‘a suggestion of a headrest’ classic Chris
A couple of suggested discussion points:
Toyota Land Cruiser is just the best car ever. Couldnt agree more.
My 5 Highlanders have been spectacular as well. And now my son is a Toyota engineer. he just bought a new Taco.
The netted headrest Ford seats were known as “Fishnet Reccaros”.
I can’t believe they didn’t know they were called fishnets!
One Chris might appreciate, I’ve still got Western Counties dealer number plates and rear screen sticker on my E30.
I can remember going to the breakers and buying a pair of heads rests and wedgeing them in between the rear seats and parcel shelve on my MG Metro 🤣
BEAUTIFUL FRIDAY VIBES
Fishnet head restraints on a Ford RS2000. Too cool!
One of my earliest car memories those.
As the owner of a Golf GTI 7.5 performance I have to agree with Chris, it's a brilliant car which I will never sell.
My dad had a Vauxhall Carlton GSi for a couple of years and I always thought it had great rear headrests
I'd like to know you guys thoughts on headlight windscreen wipers.
Re wintertires, Scandinavia has a different wintertire than rest of Europe, and there's a big difference between a good winter tire and summer tires on slippery roads.
Also, a mean temp of 5-6 degrees, will definitely give you nights and days were the temp is below zero, and frosty.
I’ve been eyeing up mk7 GTis, is the PP a necessity?
Yeah, it’s a night and day difference. I’d also recommend DCC as the passive dampers can be quite firm when driving normally. No other options are necessary.
Manish - I don’t think you are short of a few bob. Buy an Alpina, you will love it, we will love hearing about it and it will be great!!! DO IT
My best friend as an 8yr old. His dad had a pug 405 with the world’s most comfortable rear headrests. Epic!
As always outstanding chat about crap
Neil, G60 was a great choice. I did the same when my colleagues had BMW and Audi
I had a Giulia QV on winter tyres and it was no use if you were trying to push on but on a less powerful car they are fantastic.
Neil's comments about tires: I've always felt the same way about shoes.
First car was a Fiesta 950 (obvs) but poplar plus so it had head rests and later gave it XR2 alloys! The bomb.
Beware the onslaught of the Chinese tat!!
27:19 LMAO
does Neil realise there are several i3 extended range for under 8k on autotrader?
I remember when my parents upgraded from a mk1 escort to a mk1 capri and they bought headrests to slide onto the front seats probably from halfords... it was the coolest thing i had ever seen.
Brilliant as usual. Would asymmetric car design be a good topic of conversation.
Ouch!
There we go again to Land Rover's designer...😂😂
So addictive these ❤
Does anybody know the track used for the intro/outro ?, it's a great groove .
"Chris Cooper cleanse us" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂
2 car garage : No budget, ideal 2 car garage for your current situation.
Bizarre.
1:00:38 CH's face! 🤣
Fish net Recaro’s were the nuts!
Thank you Neil for mentioning the Corrado: from many angles it looks all wrong, but whether it's the G60 or the VR6, I still want one. When I was 13 or 14, I found out how to drive on a Massey-Ferguson 35.
When will collecting addicts be on BBC 2 at 7pm on Sundays.
28:32 Yaaaaay for Sheffield!!
Who (it can be absolutely anyone) would you choose to do a European road trip with, why, where would you go and what would you drive?
Rear head rests?! My dad's Y-reg Escort Estate didn't even have front ones!
When I was very young my dad had a Triumph 2500s , he traded it in for a Mini Metro city !
Ultimate poverty spec , vinyl seat , no headrests , no radio , no parcel shelf and only one mirror .
I absolutely hated that car ,4 speed box and 45 bhp , hideous little thing .
wat a show!
Suzuki ignis sport also had the mesh insert headrests
Two Car Garage:
You’re Doc Brown in a reboot of Back to the Future franchise. 2023 is your present and you’re traveling / going back to 1973. Choose your 2023 brand new car for being the “time machine” and a 1973 (or pre-1973) car for Marty McFly to drive around / car chase in Hill Valley.
Please can you talk about best lotuses 👍.
Would you lot intervene on Manishs’ next purchase and make it a 458? VW ID3 or Kia Niro… he’s lost fellas.
They are mandatory IF there is snow and or ice around.
Nice Combi!
Ray Chapman Volvo up here int Norf does the tyre Hotel type service!!!
Not a two car garage scenario but a suggestion for a topic of conversation.
What is your favourite start up sequence?
The feel of the key turning in the barrel, a dial sweep, the hum of the fuel pump, the way the engine fires into life???
I used to love the start up procedure in my dad's old TVR T350t
mr cholmondley warner was Harry Enfield and friends
Weirdly the Suzuki Ignis Sport of 2002 came with factory Fishnet headrest Recaro seats with yellow piping. Seats generally worth more than the rest of the car if you found one nowadays.
E-golf is great value electric and a fantastic town car.
