I really didn't like the f 296 when it first came out, mainly due to the weird colour detailing on the models reviewed. As far as fuel is concerned, here in the U.S. you can watch the same fuel truck go to different (Shell, Exxon, etc.) gas stations, and fill up the station. With the same gas.
Also I got some interesting observations regarding garage fuel: am driving Passat B8 2.0 turbo Diesel, I've tried all the superior fuels and so far only tangible difference I'm getting from Shell VPower diesel. What fascinates me is that I found one particular SHELL garage where even regular diesel gives me notably better performance, practically as good as their or others' VPower. That's puzzling as one would think they all should be identical within one brand/network
I had a badly misfiring Mk5 Golf TSI 1.4 twincharged and the only thing that'd make it run anywhere near right was VPower 98. The supercar community has been saying this for a while. Ferrari (and their competitors to a certain extent) are no longer interested in selling £250k to £350k cars to ordinary people who've done well for themselves and can now afford them. They're only interested in billionaires, influencers, fashion victims who'll buy into the whole brand, wear their embarrassing clothes, promote them to other "beautiful people". Self made businessmen with enough to retire on no longer interest them. None of the current Ferraris interest me at all, my 812 which is my fourth Ferrari will be my last. I wish I'd kept the 458, that's the sweet spot. At least I owned and drove them whilst I could.
Prada didn't just 'double the price point' of Church's when they bought them, it's widely known that they ruined the craftmanship in the production of the shoes. Despite Manish calling the people who weren't rich enough to buy them (or indeed a new Ferrari) 'crappy' , they were probably less ignorant than those who carried on buying them.
You misunderstand me. I've bought Church shoes for 30 years. I was shocked that 30 years of my custom meant nothing to the company, when Prada bought them. To them, I am the crappy customer because I don't have / won't shell out £1000 for a pair of brogues. And that was my Ferrari analogy - they don't really care about their customers, they want the money!
Twenty Six years ago I paid a not inconclusive amount of money for a pair of Churches black Oxfords not brogues ,in which to get married in ,the dam things are virtually indestructible, and I might add the most comfortable footwear I have ever possessed they are the Aston Martin of shoes, when I found out that hey were on a sticky wicket a while back a bought another pair which should see me out Good tip decent gentlemans shoes should be treated like a new engine, run in and then soled and healed in order to maintain tractive ability

Hey chris, I've been watching you since your first day on top gear. I'm so glad that you're back on a podcast and keep it up! I love your reviews (and you were right, most people in the states couldn't understand Pat!!)😂
Feel i can comment on the F286 debate as an owner of one….and is an interesting one. There are 2 big reasons for the price dips. One is the rule that the dealers and Ferrari imposed that to buy a new GTS, you had to buy a new GTB first. This has meant that as the GTS’s arrive there is a flood of GTBs hitting the market. Secondly because interest rates have risen, the number of £250k ish cars being sold has dropped - add the 2 together and you get a lot of GTBs hitting the market and the prices therefore dipping. It is an interesting point about the 6 cylinder engine. I would say on that if you drive it, and Chris Harris’s review backs this up, it is a phenomenal car with a great sounding engine that is better than F8 and 488. However i can’t help agree with Neil….i wish it was a 12 is better than 8 is better than 6…..it shouldn’t be and it shouldn’t matter…..but it does. However i still love my 296 and will be getting the GTS next year….
Aral still have the 102 Octane fuel in a decent amount of their stations in Germany. Whenever i visit in my E92 M3, I make a beeline for the 102 before burning it all on the Autobahn very quickly!
In the Russian-speaking world, it is very common to flash your alarm lights as either a thank you or an apology. It then becomes a matter of the length of the flashing (1x blinking - I recognise you did something for me, but hardly needed to as I could have done my move anyway; 3x blinking - I really appreciate your gesture; more than 3x blinking - something is wrong and you didn't put them on for me). As a motorbiker, when going slowly through a traffic jam, I either bend my helmeted head in their direction or stick out a foot as a thank you, if they see me coming in their mirror and make space by moving to the outside of their actual lane.
I watched a fuel test on YT, think it was from about 2 years ago, the only super that had no ethanol in was Texaco 99. I recently filled up on a tank of this and my car which is mapped for 99 felt like it was pulling stronger than usual.
This will all depend on which refinery/ fuel terminal the tanker got the fuel from. It is a minimum of 5% so could actually have 0 in it. Sometimes the refinary/fuel terminal mixer for the ethanol and additive won’t work correctly but will still be in spec.
In Oz the finger raise from the wheel is not only acceptable but mandatory and used as a greeting of vehicles on country roads and an acknowledgement of courtesy 8n the city 😊
On the topic of thankyou nod/ wave/ flash, it can get a bit out of hand here in Australia when driving on long country roads. Lots of people wave at every car that comes the other way as there are often so few cars, but it’s only a slight finger lift from the wheel to say hello
Carry a small bottle of octane booster in the car so if you get "caught short" it will raise the "RON" to an acceptable level when filling up with naff fuel...
I’m listening to this whilst sat on a stunning beach on the Hebridean , Isle of Coll , enjoying a pale ale in the SUN !, I know in Scotland , who would of thought it 😂 A quintessential Carlsberg Friday .😂😊
Our nephew who passed 100% theory test, daid that it is now noted in the highway code that you do not take your hand off the wheel to wave thanks to.oncoming traffic. Being an 'old git' i still go with a thumbs up and hand wave, a nod if they are lucky as well!
Brilliant. Loved Chris's comment about losing the cops in London in a Golf (no doubts). Same as Misha Charoudin beating you around the nürburgring in a MkII golf whilst you were in a GT4 or similar about 10 years ago (sorry, cannot remember the exact Porsche GT car). All about skill and local knowledge...... On that day, Misha showed this
1. You UK blokes have nice fuel. I’m lucky to have 93 in Florida. Highest you can get in some states is 91. 2. Was out on my favorite loop a few days ago in a very angry sounding classic 911 that has been hot-rodded. Came up on a McLaren P1, who upon hearing the little twin spark 3.5L, promptly and pulled to the side so that I could pass. Chris C would be glad to hear that I gave the P1 a wave of appreciation out of the drivers window.
theres multiple ways for octane measurement , EU uses RON while US uses a RON and MON average (compression+timing). Your 91 is our 95, and your 93 is our 98. But your 87 really is shit
Percentage wise it will be impossible to make a good flip on the new F7 if it is 4m euros. I don’t see paying 3x 4x like people did for the LaFerrari or the SP1/2 in the secondary market.
The 'NOD' is better than nothing, lazy, but given the lack of courtesy these days, I guess we should be thankful for small mercies. No acknowledgement at all drives me crazy. Interestingly, Tunbridge Wells still has courteous residents....very rare to not see a cheerful wave when giving way. I agree with Chris, the hand outside of the car is more sincere....thumbs up even better. Open palmed hand wave followed by thumb up - perfect!
After several trips to Germany, I'm lost to understand BP fuels in the UK. BP 97 is clearly not good enough, but why. Ultimate 102 and Super Plus 98 exist in their portfolio, as does E5, 95. Like you said, V Power or take the bus! The essential start to the weekend has been restored. Thanks, gents.
As a V6 enthusiast with little interest in 'super cars', the 296 is the only Ferrari I'd consider buying (if I had the money). I think it looks great, sounds great, lap times suggests it goes great and I like the not so absurdly unjustified colossal price. Interesting that Ferrari customers and fans don't rate it - I'll take that compliment.
Ferrari looks to be aiming to be highest tech super car thing like McLaren came up with. While we all loved Ferraris for being the most beautiful and heritage attached cars. That’s one hell of a pivot itself.
My friend taught motor mechanics for a living. He met some engineers from Shell. They said to him if the increased the same to him. They also said if the mpg on V-Power didn't cover the difference in price they would personally refund him. He never made a claim.
Week 3 and I just updated the "The Car Podcast with Chris Harris and Friends- MUSIC" I made on the famous music streaming site beginning with a S. I will continue to update this each week with the awesome song choices for the soundtrack of our drives.
Awesome conversation about Ferrari. I was at IMSA Weathertech at Indy this weekend. In the GT class, the 296 GT3 just doesn’t sound as good as everything else (unfortunately). Also, here in northern Indiana and southwest Michigan there are Ferraris everywhere. Some of that is economic but never used to see them like this. Not complaining!!
I always forget this gets uploaded early on a Friday... Every week is a lovely surprise (the rare occasion a terrible memory is a bonus). Appreciated as always gents. On the Ferrari thing, I want to love the brand so badly, but they make it really hard nowadays for many reasons I won't bang on about. I have previously owned a Ferrari, but for the first time ever I'd rather have a current Aston than a current Ferrari model and a Porsche is a no-brainer. Anyway, the discussion on petrol was far more enlightening than I expected... I'm absolutely guilty of just thinking it's all the same, but that's due to the complete lack of ANY discussion or information in the motoring press about it to educate drivers. How is it not a bigger conversation, or a conversation at all? It's a legit scandal.
In Trinidad and Tobago we say thanks on the road by raising our hand, tooting our horn and flashing our head lights. Its a bit much but its guaranteed 😂
Fossil fuels did save the whales. It wasn't just fuel oil but also the use of whalebone in applications that were superceded by plastics. BEVs are clean in terms of local emissions but not whole life emissions, not unless we start building nuclear power stations with the vigour reserved for wind turbines in recent years.
I’m ashamed to say I’ve also shown relative ignorance towards fuel in performance motorcycles as I was always told it’s mapped for 95 and anything more won’t see a difference on a stocker. But with the increased ethanol the 99 v power is worth it for the extra range you get, especially on a bike.
So wait, V-power is the best for performance, but we shouldn’t leave it in the tank over winter? Which fuel should I leave in the tank when I put my summer daily away for the winter?
The most fundamental flaw in all the current Ferraris is the ridiculous touch controls on the steering wheel, combined with the disappearance of the iconic rev counter when you switch to Apple CarPlay. Clearly zero customer feedback taken.
I think most petrol heads are not turned on by plug-in hybrid performance cars. They are too synthetic. They are being bought primarily by people who are attracted to the brand, not the car, so no one is buying a 296 to keep for 5 years +.
Wave thanks as nods aren’t expressive enough, BP is piss so go 99 only and plan ahead, JDM Senna poster is utterly fantastic, used to buy Church’s now SB Dunk and my feet thank me. Oh and here’s something I noted driving an Elise. Everybody is more polite, courteous for space and generally a better driver with the roof off. Perhaps it’s because we are exposed rather than wearing the automotive armour but I loved it. That’s how you improve all roads and drivers. 80s MR2s, Caterhams, Morgans and Elise for everyone! 😊
Chris, I hope you're coming back to your RUclips channel - was always saddened to see you leave your channel for Top Gear, you had such a good thing going here. Hitting the niche of true car enthusiasts that channels and people like top gear put less importance on.
Question for those of you who live somewhere a little rural. What is your go to method for dealing with the "who is going to reverse" situation when meeting a car on a narrow lane? Personally I am a committed "I'm the better reverser so I will do it" person, feeling that if one commits to reverse gear as soon as one notices reversing is going to be require, the whole "no me, no you" time is avoided and everyone can be on their way as soon as possible. This has only failed me once, in Mr Coopers territory, when I once had to reverse down the same bit of road 3 times on the way out to St Anthony's Head. Thoughts Gentlemen?
The 296 is an exceptional car. You won't find a single journalist that wasn't blown away by the sound & performance. You can argue that hedge fund chad is turned off by the v6, but you can't say any driver would call it a bad car.

Another good one lads love the two car garage question gets the mind going. But alas a lot of tuners have done tests where Tesco 99 is more consistent than V-power and ESSO 99
Thanks gents, brilliant as always. Please continue
This is best car podcast. You bring a lot of character to the discussion.
I definitely go out of my way to wave appreciation for being let out when in a car but if on a motorbike my focus is biased to not dropping it and a nod will have to do! Or occasionally a finger wave with grip still on the handlebar!
Small panic attack when I read the chapter name "Shell has run out of V-Power".
Really good episode!
Side note - I drove up to South Carolina and filled up with BP and my gas mileage went to shit!
Twenty Six years ago I paid a not inconclusive amount of money for a pair of Churches black Oxfords not brogues ,in which to get married in ,the dam things are virtually indestructible, and I might add the most comfortable footwear I have ever possessed they are the Aston Martin of shoes, when I found out that hey were on a sticky wicket a while back a bought another pair which should see me out
Good tip decent gentlemans shoes should be treated like a new engine, run in and then soled and healed in order to maintain tractive ability

Dropped earlier than l thought! Mid Friday afternoon here! Perfect!! Cheers lads.
Ahhhh excellent point. And you could legitimately put an STP sticker on the back
Loving this podcast. Well done, Team.
I’m listening to this whilst sat on a stunning beach on the Hebridean , Isle of Coll , enjoying a pale ale in the SUN !, I know in Scotland , who would of thought it 😂
A quintessential Carlsberg Friday .😂😊
Our nephew who passed 100% theory test, daid that it is now noted in the highway code that you do not take your hand off the wheel to wave thanks to.oncoming traffic.
Being an 'old git' i still go with a thumbs up and hand wave, a nod if they are lucky as well!
This had me howling at the complexities on waving to acknowledge traffic etiquette 😂😂😂
On that day, Misha showed this
Spot-on about post-Pinninfarina Ferrari.
Which is why I think the LaFerrari replacement will be very underwhelming.
US and UK/EU octane ratings are different so they are not 1 to 1
theres multiple ways for octane measurement , EU uses RON while US uses a RON and MON average (compression+timing). Your 91 is our 95, and your 93 is our 98.
But your 87 really is shit
@@NextDoorGuy Ah, remember now reading about the difference some years back.
This friday just got a whole lot better! 🚗
Jimny was mine too. Love a Jimny. Vauxhall Vectra as initial get away car
Week 3 and I just updated the "The Car Podcast with Chris Harris and Friends- MUSIC" I made on the famous music streaming site beginning with a S. I will continue to update this each week with the awesome song choices for the soundtrack of our drives.
Thanks mate.
You legend
Awesome conversation about Ferrari. I was at IMSA Weathertech at Indy this weekend. In the GT class, the 296 GT3 just doesn’t sound as good as everything else (unfortunately).
Also, here in northern Indiana and southwest Michigan there are Ferraris everywhere. Some of that is economic but never used to see them like this. Not complaining!!
I absolutely love this 😅
I always forget this gets uploaded early on a Friday...
I think a nod has to be accompanied by an over the top mouthing of “thank you”.
In Trinidad and Tobago we say thanks on the road by raising our hand, tooting our horn and flashing our head lights. Its a bit much but its guaranteed 😂
My getaway song would 100% be Kickstart My Heart by motley crue
Thank you gentlemen
Listening from France, the long bit about politeness (wave vs nod) leaves me puzzled. We french largely don't care about all that. Shrug ! 😂
The best Podcast - end of.
Volume much better in this one... Thanks
Completely agree with Manish and Chris H about Piastri - he's someone to watch and McLaren would rue the day if they lost him.
Brilliant work lads 😂😂😂😂😂☘️
Neil Clifford is so right about the Ferrari 296!
absolutely. Spot on.
Agreed. I'm glad people are saying Ferrari needs to go back to pininfarina too, because they really havent looked good since they split.
So wait, V-power is the best for performance, but we shouldn’t leave it in the tank over winter? Which fuel should I leave in the tank when I put my summer daily away for the winter?
Brilliant, excellent work gents.
The most fundamental flaw in all the current Ferraris is the ridiculous touch controls on the steering wheel, combined with the disappearance of the iconic rev counter when you switch to Apple CarPlay. Clearly zero customer feedback taken.
I need to see Chris In the gti take a chase from the blue lights 😂
I think most petrol heads are not turned on by plug-in hybrid performance cars. They are too synthetic. They are being bought primarily by people who are attracted to the brand, not the car, so no one is buying a 296 to keep for 5 years +.
The elephant in the room, 40% of homes cant charge an EV,😖
EVs are not suitable for people who don't have a garage or driveway.
It's e-lephant now....
Brilliant as always.
Love this podcast. Erudite and funny.
The key difference between fuel suppliers is the additive mix applied to the base fuel.
Until fairly recently, ESSO 99 was also zero ethanol in some parts of the country despite being E5 (up to 5%)
Wave thanks as nods aren’t expressive enough, BP is piss so go 99 only and plan ahead, JDM Senna poster is utterly fantastic, used to buy Church’s now SB Dunk and my feet thank me.
Shhh let them depreciate
Purosangues are depreciating much, much faster, and the SF90 was not a popular car. The 296 is doing a lot better than either of those.
If only it was 200kg lighter without the battery and electric motor
@@JohnFromAccounting sf90 was a pos, but it seems to be popular with bros who don't know how to drive unless it's in a straight line. Lots of those to go round.
This x100. I love my 296 GTS. It's an astonishing experience. The sublime howl/tone from the engine puts all modern V8 Ferrari's to shame… I'm looking at you, my old Pista. The handling is incredible and the overall performance is just off-the-charts. It also looks gorgeous. I especially love the ability to silently glide through towns and villages. Classy and understated. Nods and thumbs-up, rather than eye-rolls and bird flips.
This is a really good Podcast

God, police Chases... I immediately went to amazing videos by ghost rider. Amazing videos
Great pod as normal. It would be lovely to see all of Mr Clifford's head though 😅
