Not sure if it was Hindemith or Szell that captured me in this performance but it seems that one without the other would have left me empty. Not to mention the high fidelity of the recording which also played its part. Nice one Incontrario!

I have it on the authority of people who have performed this. It’s exhausting physically to perform. As Professor Schikele said “It’s tutti all the way folks.”

For those interested, the image is George, not Paul. (And I'm not talking about people from Liverpool.)

Better to be under the baton of George Szell than the drill of Christian Szell.

@@henridelagardere264 Funny thing-- Christian looks a lot like George. Wonder if that actually was Sir Laurence as claimed.

For the glasses, I thought it was John.

FABULOUS. Different. Szell's Hungarian background is the driving force. It was far lighter, gayer and transparent than most common interpretations. And of course the sheer virtuosity of an ensemble at the height of its powers. Would have LOVED to have heard this live!

Szell and the Cleveland were special. For this piece I like Kubelik and the Chicago better.

This is a wonderful recoding. However, I definitely prefer Szell's 1947 recording (also with Cleveland) over this one. There is more rhythm and dance in that magnificent performance, than what is achieved in this remake.

On the off chance that SuperMagren drops by, I think Szell, Cleveland *and* Hindemith are a good bait for hooking old acquaintances longing to be rekindled, _bitte melden!_
