One of my favorite scenes from Roger Delgado: There's a moment in "The Sea Devils" where the Master mistakes clay figures in a children's show for actual aliens. When somebody points out what they really are, he chuckles good-naturedly, as if he knew that all along. The moment the other character can't see his face any more, his expression turns to annoyance. It's very subtle, but Delgado nails it perfectly.

Geoffrey B (who by the way is/was married to the woman who played the 3rd Doctors companion Liz Shaw) is great in it, has a bit of light heartedness in it but by the end gets creepy; and his Master laugh are things nightmares are made of.

I agree it's a pity Derek Jacobi did not have more time as the Master because he made a very scary Master for the time he was in the roll. I also think Michelle Gomez has been brilliant as her 'Mistress' comes over as a genuine high functioning psychopath and her portrayal of the roll had been a country mile better than anyone other than the real Master, Roger Delgado, the man who scared the shit out of me as a kid! (No surprise as Jon Pertwee is my Doctor.)

yes by far the Best Two but like you I would have loved to see Jacobi's take. Delgado for me will always be the Master, I grew up with Hartnell and Troughton but the Pertwee era really got me hooked. Venusian Karate and Aikido, Bessie the Master the Silurians The Sea Devils the Draconions and Axon The Daemons and the Green death even the Weaker episodes were brilliant compared to the modern era. and each show was only half an hour with a cliffhanger and they told twice as much story the only big difference is about a Million quid, loud music, SFX loud sound FX and pretty boy Doctors that run around shouting a lot and snogging companions every five minutes! They are even worse now that this new Bloke Chibnal took over now there's all the bells and whistles and no bloody story either!

In several of the stories Ainley tried to be menancing. I hear he did a real good job. There was one very large problem. That was Jon Nathan Turner. He refused to let Ainley be menacing . 1:40 - Eric was aware who the Master was, because he spent his childhood in the U.K. However, he thought Delgado was quite campy and he himself wanted to give a much more "realistic" preformance. A bit controversial, perhaps, but:
    8) Eric Roberts, 7) John Simm; 6) Geoffrey Beevers, 5) Derek Jacobi, 4) Peter Pratt, 3) Anthony Ainley, 2) Michelle Gomez "I'm Doctor Whooooo!" and 1) Roger Delgado. Never really connected with John Simm and certainly not Eric Roberts. The Master works when there is a mixture of charisma, menace and plotting. I love the fact that Delgado's Master and Jon Pertwee's Doctor always tried to "outdo" each other, something that's lost in the new series, although the possible redemption of Missy was an interesting twist in Series 10. the problem I find with John Simm was there were times when his version the master comes off like a Comic Book villain like the joker. Eric Roberts dressing like doctor strange at last 20 minutes of the movie made his version the master a bit lame.

I wish they would do more with the idea of the master chasing immortality but being decayed. Sure they did the same with John Simm chasing immortality but as himself. The idea of the master being on the brink of death where he has nothing to lose and looking how he does in his decayed form is just amazingly cool to me. Would love to see it return

I love your list! Virtually identical to mine except it's a toss up between Delgado and Missy for me. I think Missy takes so much from Delgado's more serious moments and incorporates so much of his "old friends" dynamic and they're both incarnations who only attempt to kill the Doctor when necessary or as a bit of "texting" :) That being said, Delgado set the perfect precedent for all those who came after, and I think Moffat really picked that back up with Missy, even with her final death.

    Best to worst:
    1) John Simm Master and Missy (like both to a similar level and they shift places between first and second, Simm is the first master as well and I sort of like his overdramatic feel and he's awesome in World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls)
    2) Roger Delgado Master
    3) Derek Jacobi master
    4) Crispy Master (I'm counting both of them since I can't really tell the difference)
    5) Anthony Ainley Master
    6) Eric Roberts/TV Movie Master
*Note* I'm a new who fan and have seen a fair amount of the older episodes (a majority of which I like) and I've seen all the Masters in some form on screen but since I haven't seen all the episodes each appear in don't have a go at me as, due to a lack of time and ability to find them, I haven't seen all their episodes and it's been a while since I've seen the episodes I have

It's interesting you mention about the chemistry between Delgado and Pertwee and how Delgado's death had an influence on Pertwee deciding to leave the series, feeling that elusive chemistry had been lost. Because a similar situation happened with Capaldi and Gomez - when Capaldi announced he was leaving Doctor Who (along with Steven Moffatt), Gomez announced she was leaving shortly afterwards too because she felt Missy wouldn't work properly with any other Doctor. She has though acted with David Tennant since then on Big Finish.

    John Simm
    Geoffrey Beevers

    Anthony Ainley

Any thoughts on how the Master got his regenerations back? Because when we first saw him in the Classic series, he was in his 12th and final form, that's why he didn't just regenerate. He had to transfer his mind into stolen bodies in order to survive for the entire run of the Classic.
Yet in the new one, he regenerates within minutes of realizing who he really is, with just a throwaway line: "If the Doctor can be younger, well, then so can I!"

Roger Delgado is brilliant, and a lot of that had to do with his personal relationship with Jon Pertwee. The later 70s Master that had that weird skull face were barely noteworthy. Anthony Ainley is way too over the top and overused, which pretty much goes for most villains in the 80s era. Eric Roberts is.....you know that's not really something I need to talk about or even see. John Simms was amazing, but different enough from the evil charm of Delgado. Like he was evil, but he sort of had that eccentric vibe the 10th Doctor had, and he felt more like a sarcastic asshole.
But no one can top Michelle Gomez as Missy! Yes I stand by that and you can argue with me but I will be unmoved. Nothing will ever top "I am Doctor Who and these are my disposables, Exposition and Comic Relief.

I'll always go with Delgado but wonder how he would have worked with other Doctors if it had been possible. The Sea Devils swordfight was great, it's been re-done with light-sabres! There was quite a good book called 'The Face of the Enemy' in which the Doctor was off-world so in order to solve a time-puzzle the Brigadier had to temporarily release The Master to help UNIT. Not entirely to be trusted, he was partnered with Ian and Barbara.

  • @WSDigitalArtwork
    @WSDigitalArtwork 7 лет назад +8

    My ranking:
7-Eric Roberts, obviously. I don't need to explain this.
6-Peter Pratt/Geoffrey beevers, just couldn't live up to Delgado and sometimes just didn't feel like the same character
5-Anthony ainley, honestly he's just so cartoonish tbh he's just a stereotypical mustache twirling villain it feels like him and the doctor don't have an ex friends now enemies and the writers just didn't know what to do with him. He was a good actor who did the best with what he had.
4-Derek Jacobi, he just felt so menacing and powerful in the 3 minutes that he was the master but he just didn't have enough screen time as the time lord.
3- Michelle Gomez, I love missy to bits but I feel like she needed to be more threatening and less crazy as she seemed more bonkers than simm, her chemistry with capaldi was great and when she wanted to be she was truly threatening. Whilst I do love the comedic aspect of her character I do feel the writers pushed it a bit to hard and she became less threatening and more comedy, which isn't what the master can be.
2-roger Delgado, what can I say, he's the original and just great in every way I can't even do him justice by explaining why I love him.
1- John sim, I'm sure many won't agree here but to me he's perfect for the master in my opinion, at least in series 3 and 10 and some of the more serious moments of end of time. I never understood why people don't like his series 3 appearance saying that he's to manic when in series 3 he's actually far more calm and calculated than any other of his appearances. His chemistry with Tennant is amazing and you truly buy their relationship. The thing that sells me with this master is that really he always wins in series 3 he completely beats the doctor and rules for over a year and is only truly defeated because of his arrogance believing the companions to to be beneath him as he is beaten by the Martha who breaks his psychic control of everyone bring the doctor back, and jack who destroys the paradox machine. In the end of time he goes from destitute and dying to being in complete control of the planet and is only beaten once again due to his arrogance as he tried to bring back the time lords and they undid his victory. Both these times the doctor was left powerless and defeated showing that the master wasn't his equal but his superior, mortar messed this up a bit in series 10 by having the doctor beat him in under 5 minutes he still somewhat succeeded as he converted bill and all the other inhabitants of the city.

OnceUponAPiano Missy, much like Eric Roberts, is hardly recognizable as the Master. Her psycho routine mixed with her purple outfit makes her come off as playing a gender swaped Joker than a gender swaped Master. Rarely was her presence threatening and even more rarely did she act like the Master and manipulate people around her. On top of that most of the episodes she's in aren't very good.

He goes from the Doctors archfoe to a kinky Mary Poppins who wants to shag the Doctor. Its just PC nonsense to say that Missy is believable as the Master for 2 seconds.

I certainly will not be resorting to personal insults over any of your rankings (that would be rather hypocritical coming from me, as well as more than a little obnoxious, given how bad I am at ranking or comparison of any kind, though in this case I could readily agree with you in placing Eric Roberts at the bottom, though weirdly I can understand other Whovians loathing a number of incarnations for essentially the same reasons that I do that interpretation - finding it somewhat over the top, though personally somehow neither Ainley at his most "pantomime villain like" or as you say, "Saturday morning cartoon" villain like, nor Simm or more recently and indeed since the creation of this video Dhawan at their most manic, ever reach the point of grating on me - to be clear I really enjoy all three named performances, nor for Masters is one televised appearance and therefore an unfairness in the comparison really a defence for Roberts, who may well be brilliant in whatever else he has been in and may redeem himself in Big Finish for all I know, given that Peter Pratt, Geoffrey Beavers and Derek Jacobi all excel in their respective onscreen appearances). My profuse apologies, I really need to get better at self editing. Anyway, as one last note, I could never insult anyone for placing the inimitable Roger Delgado first! Nor do I disagree with your admiration of Michelle Gomez, I just couldn't begin to know where I would place most of the actors here (sorry, that one last note thing dud not last long).

The thing that... how to say... sticked out to me, with The Master character, is that The Master is INTELLIGENT. The Master comes up with a lot of unbelievable, GENIOUS plans that make you say OMG. He's amazingly talented and knoweledgeable yet he pursues evil. That's what amazing about him, more than the simple conquest pursue. Roger Del Gado and John Simm (not in Series 10 though) were AMAZING in this. I have to watch Anley and the scorched Masters.

So where would you rank Sasha Dhawan? Personally, I feel like he's a more threatening John Simm. Not a fan of the timeless children, but he was definitely the best part of that two parter.

Much like with Jodie, I'd like at least one more series before I make a call on that.
