The problem with such a device (there are others), is that in the DEX mode, your CPU is being heavily used so it gets hot, quite fast, that's why the samsung Dex solution got a fan inside - to cool your phone. When you're using a solution without a fan, your CPU will simply downclock, so you'll loose speed and performance.
Not to mention, repeatedly overheating the phone starts taking a toll on the overall battery life, and can potentially damage your battery. Had that happen before, but at least that hone had a removable battery, but the phones that have dex, do not.
Mine only ever gets as warm as it does during normal use. and the fan in Dex is so weak I'd be amazed if it dropped more than a degree or two off the overall temp. Seriously it pushes very little air and it only does so on the edges of the device, and we all know the CPU isn't housed along the edge of the phone.
I guess it depends on what your using it for. It keeps my phone cooler when I'm using the dex for hd online gaming, than it does just playing it from the phone. After about an hour my phone would by get hot and crash, on the dex it gets warm but not hot, and doesn't crash from the heat. Guess it depends on if you're a causal user or a power user optimized for performance over battery life, which you kind of have to do for any good online hd multiplayer action game.
What??? The CPU is as taxed as it is using the phone in normal mode. My Note stays on DEX mode almost all day in the office and it never get even noticeably warm. This is with both my Note 8 and 9.
To my didn't work because I've read that I've needed a old Netflix app. I discovered that if I choose mirror instead of dex I can watch Netflix in full screen.
Other dongles have SD card capability to expand storage. For those wondering, you can configure the Type C port on the dongle to charge either the phone or the device connected to the Type C port. Non flagship phones won't display the Dex screen but rather mirror the device screen which is fine if you're doing basic stuff. Really handy from a budget perspective if you already have the phone and have the money to spend on keyboard, mouse and monitor.
I've had this device for over a month with no issues. There is a slow power drain on the phone even while plugged in, but it has never been an issue for me as I don't use it for more than an hour or two at a time.
I purchased this BBing model he has here and it supports fast charge. still have my old Dex dock at work. I see zero differences in the way they function. If it lasts I'd say its worth the $30. Especially since I can connect my mini PC to the same screen and run the same peripherals with just one plug... Something My Dex dock isn't capable of.
The phone does support plugging in a printer directly. You just have to find the corresponding plugin from google play. For me, I just installed the hp printer plugin and I use a usb c to usb a female to plug my printer in and it works just fine.

I've seen these 3rd party devices several times on amazon for a while but wasn't sure if a person would get full functionality. Your video was the deciding factor for me. I've had the adapter for a few weeks now and love it. I use it mainly in a dirty shop environment that I didn't want to bring any of my pc or Chromebooks into. Thanks for the video and the info you've provided. I've always enjoyed your videos as you keep things clean, professional, and don't ramble with useless information.
I would not recommend using this with your switch!! Nintendo has a history of changing the power requirements for docks with updates wich results in 3rd party offerings bricking consoles.
Yep very true. Be careful. All my local shopping centres took all 3rd party chargers and cables for the Nintendo Switch off their shelves as plenty of people's switches either blew up from a faulty charge port inside the console or it got bricked by Nintendo after an update and would only load a black screen when you try to turn it on.
Brett, excellent review! I can't believe it's so inexpensive compared to the DeX. Good luck with your merch store. I'm sure you'll sell whatever you make. 👍👍

I was considering this a few months ago but I thought it won't active the DEX software. I guess, this manufacturer found a way to activate the software. Nice review!
Just curious. Did you enable developer options? A lot of apps like Netflix won't offer the maximized or full screen buttons unless you activate developer mode and select the option to do so. I watch netfllix on my dex all the time and it's a full sized maximized window, with the option to go completely full screen. It does the same for my hbo go, xfinity video app, amazon prime, and all the others. Just go to settings, and about samsung dex. Then click on the samsung dex build number 5 or 6 times and it gives you the unlock option. Also, you can pair ps4 and x1 bluetooth controllers to your phone to play your hd mobile games on full screen mode if you want (the built in fan on the dexdock and dexpad are pretty much required for long duration hd gaming, or your phone can overheat). There are videos on youtube that show how to pair the console controllers. I use my spare ps4 controller.
You beat me to it... Exactly, if you utilize the DevOptions... you can get the FullScreen mode for Netflix plus other useful features with non supported Apps...
I have two used with my S9+ over the past year with perfect results. It's handy during power outages where I can power my monitor off an inverter and have a desktop experience running Linux on DeX via UserLAnd (any container solution should work).
Not all dongles are created equal. The power supplied from dongle to phone requires that you match Samsung fast charge amps and voltage or every monitor will default to resolution 1080p or 900p. 1440p will only work when your using Samsung monitor or you have everything matched in power.
Ambiguos user yes its the only phone with computer like software. In a way is better then carrying laptop, I put my laptop away and use my note 9 for everything.
How about JRE ,, - The System Requirements enlist minimum/recommended hardware configuration, browsers, and plug-ins necessary for some website to deliver services dos
Only missing component on the Samsung DeX Pad Desktop described here is an ethernet port. That would make it the perfect replacement for the Original Samsung DeX Pad.
Battery tip...!!! This dex needs JUICE people and regular chargers won't work... you NEED a 30watt USB C charger for this setup to work like a champ ;)
Incomplete review. But I understand. You get free stuff for comparison and maybe a lil $$ for it. But the differences between this and a dex pad absolutely warrant the price difference. Btw, DexPad has been, since its release 30% off bringing it to only $70. Well worth the price.
Tech With Brett besides the optimization of dex on a samsung for certain apps? A few settings I've found on the DexPad was audio through hdmi so no need for bluetooth speakers or access to the headphones jack. Alot of video apps like Netflix, hulu, amazon, etc. are optimized for use with dex so itll go full screen automatically and sleep the display on the phone. I've also noticed with the DexPad, even in screen mirror mode, it knows that your watching a movie or video of some sort and it automatically goes full screen but you can disable that feature if you want. But you can always expand the window as you would on a pc. I looked at several generic hubs prior to purchasing the DexPad and imo, the twice the price thing was worth it. I've seen alot of mixed reviews on the generics but not alot of cons for the DexPad. And the DexPad (not the DexDock) actually does display in 4K as advertised. Not saying your review was incorrect, but slightly inaccurate. Maybe a side by side comparison would suit the viewers that are in the market for such a device a lil better. Sometimes paying for the brand name is better. I know I'd be happier at $30 rather than $70 but sometimes you get what you pay for.
On a side note, it would be interesting to see which device faired better if it wasn't a samsung phone hooked up to each hub. That may be a deciding factor for people with a Motorola or a lg. It may not work on a DexPad but work as intended on the generic hub. Just a thought.
I hope somebody is going to build a case for Note 9 that can be used as the monitor and key board. It will be nice by using the case, Note 9 can be transformed into a small laptop computer easily. I thought 8 G ram, 512 G SSD hard, sounds like way better than many other small laptop computers.
MultiShow I don't know about this adapter specifically but on my dex pad, Plex does work full screen, it's awesome. I'm sure it works the same with this adapter since it is triggering the phone to launch dex ui.
After Oreo update you can simply choose if you want hdmi mirror output or dex desktop from connection-advanced without the need of dex station anymore and it works perfectly even with a cheap usbc to hdmi adapter The only requirement is that the dongle needs to be a powered one...otherwise the phone will only mirror the display
Tech With Brett It's without dex. If I'm watching a downloaded video it will play in the background I can do anything else with my phone including making phone calls or watching Utube vids or streaming vids browser
Tech With Brett the only thing I found U can't play a video on tv in background and use use split screen. However pop out windows work. All of this without video interruption
jacky yo There's no standard of 2.5k. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution People are mixing Cinema standards with display resolutions. And then some even made up some resolutions like 2.5k.
For the problem of the number of USB ports available. I bought a set (Keyboard+mouse) from the logicool brand which uses only one USB receiver for both keyboard and mouse. So I still have one USB port available to use as I want. :D
This is awesome. Samsung is in beast mode. I switch from apple and dont regret it now. I'm definitely getting the dexpad. I do t need a computer. Omg the future is here.
Samsung Dex could easily be a music recording studio beast if it weren't for the damn latency. But I hope IK Multimedia will take advantage of this for us musicians.
By the way i printed a document through a hub that has many full usb ports since there are many apps at play store through which you can setup your printer
I was concerned about the screen on the phone being on when using Dex via HDMI for extended periods, so all you have to do is plug in keyboard/mouse and the phone screen will be totally black.
This device works the same just as the official Samsung Dex at a marginally lower cost. Outputs at 1080p just like the Samsung Dex. I highly recommend this same product over the Samsung Dex. You can also use this same device for your Nintendo Switch.
To enable Netflix full screen open Samsung Dex settings click on about Samsung Dex and then tap on the dex logo 5 times, enable developer mode back up one screen and enable Samsunbg Dex labs. Disconnect and reconnect the phone to apply the changes and you're done. Been using Dex daily for over a year. this is far and away the best and easiest way.
Great video! I have used Samsung since S2 and Samsung was still my best love. If they are less expensive I am sure I'd love to have one of the Note series. I am using Mate 10 Pro now which costs me almost $600 less than S9 Plus that I was planning to buy originally. Mate 10 Pro does offer similar feature but the resolution is only up to 1080P. So I just got a cheap 14 bucks adaptor from Ebay. I mainly use it to watch video while travelling if I don't have my usual ThinkPad with me.
If you have to unplug mouse and keyboard to enable the touch pad feature, how will you be able to type? Will it work in conjunction with bluetooth mouse and keyboards? What about external hard drives? Will that work? Can you drag and drop files and make backups that way? Netflix small screen is lame, but what if you go to Netflix website via chrome? Will you be able to watch full screen then? What about RUclips and other streaming apps, as far as watching full screen goes? Is there a portable device that can turn it into a chromebook? Great product and review, thanks.
I think the fan is necessary. Samsung uses extra CPU and ram in dex mode. It also has an effect on wifi network. Streaming has more issues in dex, most are due to the way it handles the ram and network.
It's quite shocking at how fast and snappy your Samsung Dex Machine works! Doesn't seem any different from any current computer at all doing mundane tasks.
I need answers on the screen mirroring. Does the monitor support it? What about sound when your phone is connected? Do you need wifi to screen mirror like with the chromecast? Thanks in advance
IIRC, there is a Developer's option or something to that effect that allows apps to run in full screen mode. I had the original Dex that I returned due to flickering, but I was able to play PUBG in full screen like you, and I believe I was able to play Netflix in full screen mode. I will try with this item on Sunday to confirm. Thanks for the vid!!!!
Erlee del Orbe it doesnt work. I tried the Dex mode on the old and this item you've reviewed, it doesn't work on either. This is a much better option, no flickering signal problems like the old model DeX. Great find!
no need for dex station anymore.after Oreo update you can find the switch button to choose between HDMI or Dex mode under setting-connection-more connection setting-HDMI mode
Printers do work if you download the correct service. I have a Deskjet(older model) no WiFi and no wireless only usb. I plug it in and the HP printer service connects to it successfully and I print stuff out without a problem. Obs! Not the HP printer app that one is the wireless. It's the HP printer service app and because it's a service there is no app to open just plug and play. But you have too allow it to access the USB Device aka the printer through a popup that pops up when you connect the printer. Great video though
Great video! Quick question I was using another version of this that was not a Samsung Product with my s8. When I downloaded the OS update a couple months ago Samsung had put a block on any dex accessing products that were not Samsung dex stations themselves such as this. Are u sure this will work with that new block the implemented? Thanks!

Use Samsung labs, it allows Netflix to go full size
You beat me to it... Exactly, if you utilize the DevOptions... you can get the FullScreen mode for Netflix plus other useful features with non supported Apps...
I have two used with my S9+ over the past year with perfect results. It's handy during power outages where I can power my monitor off an inverter and have a desktop experience running Linux on DeX via UserLAnd (any container solution should work).
Great way to fry your switch like the rest of the third party docks for it.
Not all dongles are created equal. The power supplied from dongle to phone requires that you match Samsung fast charge amps and voltage or every monitor will default to resolution 1080p or 900p. 1440p will only work when your using Samsung monitor or you have everything matched in power.
What about heat buildup without the fan?
Now called ToPoint USB C adapter now, $27.
So Samsung Dex is like a mini computer?
Ambiguous User more like a docking station
Ambiguos user yes its the only phone with computer like software. In a way is better then carrying laptop, I put my laptop away and use my note 9 for everything.
The phone itself is the computer. The Dex essentially just allows you to use a more desktop-like UI mode.
How about JRE ,, -
The System Requirements enlist minimum/recommended hardware configuration, browsers, and plug-ins necessary for some website to deliver services dos
Java
Awesome video I hope Samsung pushes dex to next level and compete with Microsoft surface or apple mac, all from the phone.
Question:
When you unplug mouse and keyboard then you can use that screen for moving but how do you type??
Thanks!
There is an option to have a on screen keyboard pop up.
Only missing component on the Samsung DeX Pad Desktop described here is an ethernet port. That would make it the perfect replacement for the Original Samsung DeX Pad.
No ethernet port on the dex pad. Only the first generation has the ethernet
@@johngoedhard8459 That's what he said dude
Battery tip...!!!
This dex needs JUICE people and regular chargers won't work... you NEED a 30watt USB C charger for this setup to work like a champ ;)
Great tip!
Tech With Brett thanks
Is the OEM charger that comes with the phone from Samsung sufficient?
I bought one of these and works well, Netflix will play full screen
Incomplete review. But I understand. You get free stuff for comparison and maybe a lil $$ for it. But the differences between this and a dex pad absolutely warrant the price difference. Btw, DexPad has been, since its release 30% off bringing it to only $70. Well worth the price.
Maybe I should do a comparison. What do you think I missed addressing in this video?
Thanks Brett. Does it work with Plex in full screen?
MultiShow I don't know about this adapter specifically but on my dex pad, Plex does work full screen, it's awesome. I'm sure it works the same with this adapter since it is triggering the phone to launch dex ui.
After Oreo update you can simply choose if you want hdmi mirror output or dex desktop from connection-advanced without the need of dex station anymore and it works perfectly even with a cheap usbc to hdmi adapter
The only requirement is that the dongle needs to be a powered one...otherwise the phone will only mirror the display
Netflix does work full screen using Smary View. I do it all the time with my tv
Is that within DeX or just on your Samsung TV?
Tech With Brett It's without dex. If I'm watching a downloaded video it will play in the background I can do anything else with my phone including making phone calls or watching Utube vids or streaming vids browser
Tech With Brett the only thing I found U can't play a video on tv in background and use use split screen. However pop out windows work. All of this without video interruption
Ok great.
You need a smart TV right ? Does it work with Chromecast?
Thank you, Brett, for a very useful video. I am glad to see that there are some cheaper and yet useful alternatives to the Samsung DeX for our phones.
It not 4 K. 1440p is more like 2.5k.
And 1080p is just normal full hd.
And 720p is hd.
He says that in the video......
1440p is QHD, not 2.5k or whatever wrong term people use these days. Likewise, 4k is not the same as UHD.
2010ngojo QHD is pretty much the same as 2.5k
jacky yo
There's no standard of 2.5k.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution
People are mixing Cinema standards with display resolutions. And then some even made up some resolutions like 2.5k.
I was wondering too cause I used it on my TV and no 4k still pretty neat.
For the problem of the number of USB ports available. I bought a set (Keyboard+mouse) from the logicool brand which uses only one USB receiver for both keyboard and mouse. So I still have one USB port available to use as I want. :D
Samsung phone better than apple.
This is awesome. Samsung is in beast mode. I switch from apple and dont regret it now. I'm definitely getting the dexpad. I do t need a computer. Omg the future is here.
very informative thank you!!
Samsung Dex could easily be a music recording studio beast if it weren't for the damn latency. But I hope IK Multimedia will take advantage of this for us musicians.
look like this is the time for microsoft to make windows 10 for free now android has continum lol 😒😒😒😒
He mentioned all those Samsung devices without the S10\10+ I'm like hold on and check the videos date 😅
To run netflix on full screen mode all you need to do is enable developer mode on the dex, and allow full screen to the netflix app
By the way i printed a document through a hub that has many full usb ports since there are many apps at play store through which you can setup your printer
Thanks, been quesoning if buying the offical adaptor is worth the money.
I totally forgot to do that! I will try it out.
Been using an s9 plus for weeks. All i do is watch RUclips videos. Like these.
jadenweih well thanks! I have a few more here you can watch: Samsung Galaxy S9 | S9+ Tutorials: ruclips.net/p/PLPRhQEDGqsFA8Ih90388omH8X3SCf_KA9
Brett -- Just put DEX into Immersive mode and the netflix will go to full screen.
I saw that was updated! Thanks!
Actually Samsung DEX does support USB printers if the drivers are available on the play store
Dose Samsung dex work on the galaxy a10e?
Streaming has more issues in dex, most are due to the way it handles the ram and network.
ive used it for hours phone has never been hot at all
You living in an igloo?
It's quite shocking at how fast and snappy your Samsung Dex Machine works! Doesn't seem any different from any current computer at all doing mundane tasks.
Clorex Bleach bro I see you in most of the videos...😂
So the CPU speed is pretty good? What is your sense of how much faster this will 'burn out' your phone?
Does the phone heat? Cause the original Dex have a cooling system for a reason. What do you think?
The resolution is 2K not 4K, keep it up, good work
The world's best Samsung!
"let's get started" mug had me automatically think of TDUK.
1:13 - Lil mistake instead of 2 full USB-C Slots it has 1 USB-C Slot and 2 USB Type A Slots
I need answers on the screen mirroring. Does the monitor support it? What about sound when your phone is connected? Do you need wifi to screen mirror like with the chromecast? Thanks in advance
And I'm using a $10 adapter for Dex. IT only has one USB, but the screen I connect it to has a built in USB HUB, so there is that.
But doesn't that drain the power really fast?
I have the same type, a regular HDMI A to USB type C cable but it drains my battery power on my S9+ really quick
@@syed7816 Nope, it has charge passthrough, so it actually charges my phone while I use it.
Thanks for the vid!!!!
reyesgohard did you try this? What was the result and what is this option your referring to for developers?
Erlee del Orbe it doesnt work. I tried the Dex mode on the old and this item you've reviewed, it doesn't work on either. This is a much better option, no flickering signal problems like the old model DeX. Great find!
How hot does the phone get and does having a fan work better
Why is this guy filming this vid at 2:00 AM ?
no need for dex station anymore.after Oreo update you can find the switch button to choose between HDMI or Dex mode under setting-connection-more connection setting-HDMI mode
With the 30$, i can get the official dex in second hand though
Do it.
Try the Netflix on screen mirroring mode, than you can watch full screen.........
Regarding Netflix, you could go to it through Chrome and have it on full screen.
It has to be plugged into the wall for it to work at all?
Dex would be really amazing if it gets more app support like Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop.
This works way better than continuum for Windows phones.
Great video! Quick question I was using another version of this that was not a Samsung
Product with my s8. When I downloaded the OS update a couple months ago Samsung had put a block on any dex accessing products that were not Samsung dex stations themselves such as this. Are u sure this will work with that new block the implemented? Thanks!
I was hoping you'd use it in 4k. Because I have a 4k monitor and I cant use it.
Brett Awesome review always enjoy have picked up some great ideas just from watching your Reviews and have much ah ha moments just watching your Videos and have picked up some great things from you over the time .Congrats on the Numbers although I think people should be watching much more Great information love your Reviews Deb👌✌
Thanks Debra! It motivates me to create more videos!
I have both and neither is working. Could it actually be my phone's type c port?
Is it still safe to use even without a fan?
Does your phone get hot with that multimedia adapter?
DeX is basically an external screen connector. Any will work.
They dont ship it to germany, so i bougt a simular product, works like a champ
Thank you so much for sharing Brett!! Keep up the good work!! Love your channel
Did you experience any latency while using the keyboard and mouse?
I couldn't get the USB Type C to plugin to my Note 9 with my case on. I returned it as I did want to take the case off everytime I wanted to use DeX. Great video though!
