Some feedback from a fan of the channel: - Eber complains about the mobile webpages in Chrome when there is a "Request Desktop Site" button in the Chrome options that will fix this issue for 90+% of websites - Similarly in Gmail, it defaults to HTML view but you can see on the screen in the video there's a link to the standard desktop view. Click that and you're back to "normal" Gmail Maybe with a bit of additional digging and instructions on how to leverage these options the video might have deserved to be 17mins. Eber tends to ramble more than Dimitri but this video is a bit of a slog.
@John Marston Nah they're both great hosts. Eber is more chill and Dimitri is more energetic I guess. But that's why they work so well together and have successfully run this channel for so long. To each their own I suppose. I like them both frankly, always have like most of us here on the channel do.
Dex is revolutionary. But not mainstream yet. Great leap was in Note 9 not requiring a dock...and 8 gigs of memory that DeX needs. Big limit is not processor but android. I am waiting for the day Samsung brings out their Linux app. Imagine that your phone is actually a powerful computer that fits in your pocket...and can connect to a big screem ...keyboard and mouse. Wow. I am geeked out and productive.
Yeah this has been my dream since laptops were main stream, condense them into a phone. I think this would be a great excuse to sell say $2000+ phones... which would be no problem for most people (me at least) if the graphics would be able to push e3 games at around 60fps. The future is exciting!!
I'm using Dex on N9 for about 6 weeks basically working with MS Office (Word and Excel), and it surprised me big time. I though it was just a toy, but it really works.
@@shogunofharlom lol wha??? Well... I'm speaking from the standpoint of a creative professional. But at least where I'm from people DEFINITELY spend more, way more, than 400 bucks on a laptop. Easily.
"Where I'm from" - Are you sure it's not just because you hang around techy people? Most people won't spend that much on a computer but most of the people I know have spent at least twice that, my PC cost £3000 (close to $4000), but I know a lot of people who wouldn't spend 10% of that.
from a creative professional...it wont be revolutionary because phones will always be small...Desktop will always be bigger. the latest Tech from phones wont ever beat the latest tech from Desktop space.
+Dapper Dop I think it would be way better if it were the other way around: You’d have a palm-sized pc (like the intel nuc) that would also have a screen and what not to function as a phone. The biggest problem with this is that you’d need a *massive* battery to be able to use that thing for more than an hour...
7:31 u need to change default app in setting to always ask so that u can open the log in page on chrome 7:57 again just change default apps 8:28 change it to standard man =_=
fucking idiot man hahahahah.... so annoyed me when he didn't click standard especially

So many fails in this video... Let me elaborate: using a web address and expecting it to launch an app(you can pin apps to the taskbar, no need for that browser phone behavior), clearly failing to notice that gmail in chrome was in _basic html_ view and all you had to do was change it to _standard_ and you can set chrome to desktop mode for it to always load the full sites.
There are many more problems with the review here. PUBG mobile intentionally does not allow keyboard and mouse input to get rid of the advantage of using that against touch screen gamers, and drag and drop works with the Gallery app. He says the "Gallery" app but opens the Files app instead. So yeah
So Im french, bluetooth or usb keyboards on DeX are automatically switched to international QWERTY, a bit annoying since we have AZERTY. You have to go to "physical keyboard" in settings and then change the keyboards to your preferred setting RUclips since like early 2018, unfortunately stretches the video on the horizontal axis when you go on DeX FROM using it on mobile (most times) and you have to reset it by emptying the cache or erasing data as you would to activate HDR in order for DeX to show RUclips in its proper DeX configuration speaking of HDR, sometimes watching content that's HDR on DeX on a non HDR content compatible monitor might crash the game after displaying a black screen. Dell Mobile Connect works with DeX, and you can mirror DeX but when you touch the mirrored DeX on your computer the part you touch of the DeX Window on your computer wont be the part where your cursor actually. When using the camera with the samsung camera app, you can only have 18.5:9 portrait format and you have access to no other buttons than video photo or switch camera front and main back camera, no flash no slow motion etc browsing is easy, listening to music as well, I dont know if the headphone jack of the phone still works cuz I dont have an extender touchscreen is available but I havent tested it myself Fan is audible when in a quiet room but otherwise it isn't disturbing at all. With no Samsung Clear Cover you can use the phone as a trackpad and keyboard since Oreo update When plugging the phone YOU MIGHT run into issues of resolution, sometimes it displays 720p despite using a 1080p monitor because a connection has been improperly made, or the screen goes erratic (I have a video on my channel showing that + hidden upside down feature) cant use office apps on DeX as it considers that its desktop setup Youll need to use the samsung browser thing and then use the desktop site to use online Office on DeX Making calls you use your bluetooth device for both microphone and speaker to hear if it sports microphone otherwise you will have to use the phone's own microphone ... echoes Some apps will have to be fullscreen to properly be used, Textra for example, which also cant be used to the full extent in split screen on the phone alone (multi tasking) SOMETIMES in Chrome or other apps if you have the cursor on the left it your sentence will be written like this siht ekil nettirw ecnetnes ruoy, doesnt happen often SOMETIMES, I dont know if the phone is at fault, the connection or the dock/heat : the phone might discharge, not till 0% battery life, also it takes longer to charge the phone with the DeX station
Sure no problem, Im very happy with it, for the year Ive been at uni living in a small dorm its been my TV, my youtube watching device (cuz using my gaming laptop would draw too much for the use on the battery) and using the OLED just deteriorates and it has shown deterioration already, at low brightness in a uniform grey background its very noticeable, there are dark spots on the OLED. I record stuff on my laptop from the DeX with Elgato gamecap HD60S and bypass the DRM/HDCP preventive measure thing that prevents from screenshooting I use DeX to browse and send messages also. Manage my files Also used it to put on some movies for my nephew or mother on TVs, or share somethings with friends, take notes to class (when I could)
No manual switching you clowns clearly haven't tried Samsung internet. It runs with desktop flags because Sammy surprisingly actually thinks their shit thru
you can go into dex settings and essentially force apps to work with it. some apps might not work correctly but it lets you full screen any app if you do it that way.
@@NerdyDude186 Yes I am partially blaming this guy, I'm pretty sure 90% of people will wanna use dex as a laptop replacement if it can use/simulate Microsoft Office
I am using dex on my tab s4, s8+ and s9+. Please be informed that you don't need the dex pad at all. I am using an aftermarket GC usb-c dongle and it works perfectly with all of them! By the way for simple office work dex and office 365 is already a pretty capable alternative to a pc. I highly recommend trying it for yourself. Hope this feedback helps.
@@samsungdexvideosbyshaunros121 WHAT?? REALLY?? I have the S9+ but I can't use Dex cuz I don't wanna buy the dock. But, YOU'RE TELLING THE TRUTH RIGHT?
@@ivanf3973 Hey bud. I have S8+ and I purchased USB-C dongle with HDMI port on. Yes, you don't have to spent 60 or even more for deX. I got mine at 20 bucks and it works like a champ. However, make sure you purchase the one that has small USB-C header. One I bought has bulkier header, it doesn't completely fit in unless I remove my case.
This is simple. Just like an iPad Pro, a Samsung Dex is not meant to replace a computer..it is meant to make things easier for consumers by adding productivity on the go in a case you cannot carry a full pc around with you. There is so much Dex is capable of doing but will never replace a full pc
Not any more my note 8 got android pie with one ui and in the upgrade is included dex which works now direct to the monitor no need for the dex station.
You don’t need to drag the edges for full screen. You can change that in settings for force full screen. Process below: Pull down the notification bar and head to Settings (gear-shaped icon near the top right) Find and select Display Select the option labeled Full Screen Apps Find an app that isn’t highlighted and switch full screen mode to on Force any app into full screen mode and you’re all set
Dude you didn't even cover the most important thing which is how does Microsoft office and Google docs run on it even though you have MS Excel app on you desktop : (
Have been using those for a year now.. they work just as they would on a full blown pc no issues. For Google docs and sheets used the Samsung browser instead of the app.. you get all the capabilities.
Good video. Never used DeX myself, but a lot of users below are pointing out to issues/stuff that you missed out on. Hope you can comment on the same, so that people on the fence(like me) have a bit more clarity. Summarizing them here : 1. More liberal use of "Request for Desktop Site". 2. Clicking on "Standard Desktop view" for the gmail website that you opened. 3. Demo of a few more popular Android games from various genres. 4. Using MS products (like Excel, Word, Powerpoint etc.) 5. Using apps like DeX Max for scaling .
Thank you for this Video!! I've been thinking about buying a DeX for my old Note8, as a broke college student I cant justify a new desktop when I already have everything I use and need in my phone! At ~70$ on Amazon now and a already owning a older TV monitor this is very much in my price range! You gave pros and cons very eloquently!
If budget is tight you may wish to try LEEN or SENTIO desktop launchers. Essentially all we need is Chrome browser & can use Drive & Chrome apps. Or get a cheap PC stick.
Regarding GMail in the browser, simply use the feature-packed Samsung E-mail app instead. Regarding the graphics quality and scaling issues, blame your cheap LG adaptor, Samsung offers their own USB C to HDMI adaptor with support for 4K UHD @ 60Hz! Regarding gaming controls, a cross-platform Bluetooth game controller like the IPEGA-9021 would easily provide a better overall experience. Regarding drag and drop, they demonstrated that on stage, not sure why it's not working for you.
I would love to see this concept pushed forward, expanded upon, updated, and optimized more. It would be perfect for someone like my wife who has zero desire for multiple PCs and phones. I could see myself using it on many occasions, too, though I wouldn't view it as a replacement as she gladly would.
Hey bro I am a student I just got me a Samsung galaxy s10 where my old phone has some issue so I got me the S10 replacement of pixel 2xl I started to experience to see what samsung dex can do for me as a basic user and school usage only and so far i am loving it allow me to do all my assignment online that needed to be done and able me to print document for class from within the samsung dex it self without needing a PC. I used a older VGA monitor that I bought online for 5 dollars because I am very cheap as a student every dollar counts and what I spend it on and having a USB C to VGA is great it work well with my cell phone. All the apps I used opens great in window mode and it just like other PC I used in the pass but with a learning crave depend what I am doing such as word in mobile version is very different than the traditional PC software for windows or mac. Now using it for a few days I have the hang of it and now I have download all the apps that I needed daily for my used offline and online application. With what Microsoft Window is doing now with that 2.0 TPM requirements none of my older pc can upgrade to window 11 so now with samsung dex will replace all of my other OS and only used this as my main device all in one bro. Watch out Windows samsung dex is making a come back and android on window operating system is nothing new samsung dex can do it all but with a learning crave.
Samsung Dex Labs allows you to resize apps that are not officially resizeable inDex. Turn it on. it works pretty well. (its actually awesome with the Windy weather app).
Note 9 DeX is very beneficial, if you have a USB-C Monitor (e.g. ThinkVision P27h 27") and have a Mice & Keyboard + Network connected to it. So essentially, you only have one cable to worry about. Have one at work :D
ColonelBlock, why you need network though when all modern phones have 4g? Unless you live in a undeveloped country then ok. Personally i have fibre only for convinience. I might as well save money and live only with 4g 100mbs.
i can think of many, i have 2 freinds that are very stingy and don't want to invest on a desktop computer, this could be their answer to not only upgrade their phones, but finally have a desktop setup using the Note 9. as a University student the only stuff i require are Internet, email access, microsoft office like word excel powerpoint etc, phone, texts and apps , all Which are usable with the android system. Yes i write my papers using microsoft word on my phone.
It's doesn't matter now. If it becomes better and better, more user will use it. I have an s8+ but I don't have Dex adapter, but I always wanted to try it. I bet if it will came with out-of the box adapter everybody will try it.
I use it now on my Galaxy Tab S4 for school. I can access Canvas, the web, and I actually use Pulse for messaging too. So I can now do all of that on my tablet during class, all at the same time, instantly. I've written papers, and used the multiple windows to watch RUclips or do other things, just like a PC, but in a smaller form factor. It's been incredibly useful. Being able to do things such as edit photos through Lightroom mobile in one window, while doing other things in other windows with Dex has given me the power to multitask in a user friendly OS that im already used to with my Samsung Phone. It's been great not having to lug my laptop around with me. And I can play my Google Play games on it!
I used Dex while saving money for grad school by not paying for home internet. It was a game changer. Besides homework that required Excel, I never actually needed to use my desktop PC. The browsing experience was phenomenal, apps like Word worked just like on Desktop for the most part, text IDE’s for Android worked fine for whenever I needed to do some work at home, and most Android apps played nice with Dex. Makes me wonder why desktop phones aren’t a mainstream concept, or why Samsung doesn’t really advertise it all that well. I remember owning an Atrix and thinking the concept was fantastic, but the software implementation mixed with the severely underpowered hardware made the idea impossible day to day. Like a desktop PC running 512MB of RAM? Yeah it was too early for phones to have this sort of role. Now that these phones are more powerful than my laptop I can’t imagine why smartphone makers won’t try ideas like Dex to give reasons for upgrading.
Microsoft did this years ago with the lumia 950/950XL and continuum (and they had awesome hardware, 1440p OLEDs are still not mainstream). Sadly devs never jumped on the wagon, this tech could be already so advanced today... Windows-Store Apps are still meant to be scalable to all sizes, afaik, sooo... they tryed. We will see who gets this tech to the masses, but microsoft probably not.
I've switched to Dex as primary home desktop, I obviously have a full computer at work. but when I come home if I want to email, browse the net , go through photos, the experience is perfect it's far quicker then a PC(just drop it in the dex) and ready to go with everything I had from the day). The multi tasking which isn't even covered in the video is fantastic, I am texting, on calls while I work on it. You can watch videos, and yes even edit videos if you do the Adobe app. Work on all MS products, print etc. No idea why gaming was even a topic, no one is planning to do their main gaming on it like PUBG, however try make out if you want fun nostalgia, can hook up a game pad. For all the abilities the DEX is definitely worth it, I had a 1080p screen an old USB mouse and USB keyboard laying around, cost me nothing, put on some old computer speakers I had as well and perfect. DEx is 1080p native. Honestly this reviewer didn't do enough homework on this. Why not really make an effort to make it your desktop for 1 week. This is a huge benefit of the Samsung the past 2 years since it's been out, and apple should really be scared . Majority of ppl aren't super power users, they want to do the basics without slow down, and the Dec delivers
Regarding the browser complaints, use Samsung Internet instead of that limited junk Chrome on mobile. Samsung Internet is MILES better than Chrome due to the following: - It has DeX support integrated so you wouldn't be running into that mobile website annoyance - it offers support for adblock extensions (not some integrated one that'll easily get outdated) - It has a very handy video manager extension that allows you view in full-screen/PIP/VR any video you come across on the web - It's got a fully-customizable speed-dial new-tab screen - Smooth and continuous scrolling text selection (other browsers inconsistently stop when you get to the bottom of the screen) - Fast and secure web sign-in with biometrics - Can be integrated with Bixby quick-commands (especially handy for them websites which don't have a mobile app yet you use often) - Syncs with Chrome on the Desktop too via the Samsung Internet extension. - etc. You're missing out, nothing else comes close. This coming from someone who's used iPhones with Safari for over half a decade, and used Firefox/Opera/Chrome/UC Browser/Dolphin on a OnePlus One before Samsung Internet became available for all Android devices. Now using Samsung Internet exclusively on my Note 8.
I have been using DeX since the S8+ came out... I am a photographer/videographer and having the pics and footage on my phone while being able to plug in and edit via photoshop/lightroom is IRREPLACEABLE! I LOVE using the DeX station, it just makes things so much more productive on a big screen. I now have the Galaxy Note 9 for my daily driver and the camera system rivals my SONY A7III.... I simply cannot believe Samsung can put so much technology in such a small package!
The biggest most important advantage the Dex docking station maintains over the cable-only option of the newer phones with the latest Android is the USB port to connect a USB thumb, external HDD or external SSD full of media files (audio and video.) That's the deal-breaker. I love it. Plus the Dex flips closed and is pretty small in a bag.
Just don’t understand why Samsung not implementing a full Linux OS for DeX as Linux is a desktop oriented os with millions of applications free in the wild then I will be a happy camper. Another issue is that why DeX not using wireless display adapter or chromecast to connect to a monitor instead so that we can charge the phone or connect wireless devices while using DeX. It’s just doesn’t make sense.
Thank you for making this video and giving your honest opinion from a PC user perspective. For sure Samsung would like for us to utilize the optimized apps for DeX and the drag and drop works when using the Samsung apps. I too hope that Samsung continues to improve this system as it can be very handy in a pinch.
Dex is perfect for the average user. Most people are not editing or doing intensive computing. They're mostly doing entertainment, writing emails, etc. Stuff that's not really burning a lot of processing. So being able to turn your phone into a computer to do simple errands such as taxes and intensive emails for job searches, I think will be the target for Dex because most people don't need all that much power. Thats why I'm looking into it. Ever since my laptop broke I haven't really felt the need to get. A new laptop and even when I had it I barely used it I always used my phone. So I see the Dex as something I can use for when I need a desktop set up.
How to fix it yourself: Tweetdeck - Right click open in new tab/incognito window. Gmail - Look at the bottom of the screen, in the yellow box. It shows read as 'basic html' or 'standard'. Click on 'standard' and it will show the default layout. How didn't you notice it HC? Btw, gz for actually finding the setting to change the layout in RUclips.
Edit: I do not have DEX right now, and I cannot justify buying an accessory because I have a bare-bones Surface Pro 4 JUST for my academic work. When that device dies, I will whole heartedly get the DEX mod and a monitor. All I do on the daily is school work, REDDIT, watch RUclips, and look at porn. This is the exact type of platform I need. And secure folder has had its moments to shine too. This, and my Note 7, 7, 5, 8, and 9 are the exact experience that I needed. 😎
you have Huawei to thank for the latest Dex to not need a proprietary dock. They have offered EMUI Desktop with just a simple dongle a year ago with Mate series. We all benefit from competition!
It's an interesting concept and one could think of replacing your desktop one day. But the software is inconsistent. It lacks professional apps. Every aspect of the OS is non-professional. Now I would like Google to develop a native android that supports desktop output with the entire Play Store. That could became an alternative to Mac os and Windows. They could fusion Android with Chrome OS and implement in every Android phone. Samsungs solution is a nice try but you clearly see that Samsung is not a software company. I don't understand why Google isn't developing Chrome OS faster, it just became Play Store after years. It could be supported more and pushed to compete against Windows and Mac, but Google is sleeping and I feel like they are gonna kill it as they do with many other projects.
I use Lightroom, Photoshop and Premiere pro a lot. I mean the basic stuff you do with a PC which you can't do or at least not easily on a mobile OS, such as management of huge amounts of data, data on the NAS drive, moving files to external hard disks and back, organizing stuff, multi tasking, high quality graphics games, upgrading hardware when it gets old instead of replacing everything, ...
@@theboss069 There are apps for that i think well on synology NAS there are apps or you can manage the data by using a browser, photoshop and lightroom are on dex also if you install the apps, games that depends on the gpu rn only mobile games are better on dex, multitasking is possible on dex tbh the upgrading part will happen if someone made a modular phone
Hey look, the exact same arguments for why you shouldn't use Linux on the Desktop, or for why ChromeOS is destined to fail. Mark my words, this will replace most "Normie's" desktops. Because most people only need things that are already implemented in DEX
I have Samsung DeX on my s8 and bought a hdmi to phone cable and it came up automatically and l was shocked was very surprised that I had this not realising at all what it was and worked perfectly with phone as pad 👍
You don't need to buy the Samsungs Dex Station to use Dex. I use Dex with my Samsung Galaxy S9 on a normal USB C Hub for 30€. It has a SD & Micro SD Slot, 3 USB 3.0 Ports, 2 USB-C Ports. It even supports Pass-Through Charging. You should Inform yourself right about the Tech before you make a Tech Video. You said a few other wrong things about Samsung Dex, but I'm not being a picky hater. If there wasnt so much wrong Tech Information it would be a very good Video.
Regular users do not edit vídeos, and do not use 4K, I think u could text in MSOffice or gdocs, and browsing (I did that last one) that I think would get more the daily regular users..
I think this is the future and will replace many home office PCs once its a standard feature of Android or other mobile OS. There is no need to have a dedicated PC if all you do is browse, watch videos, use social media and write Documents.
I am excited to try this for college next semester. I think it will be nice to have all my documents and accounts on my phone. And not having to use public school computers will be nice.
So I just started to play around with DeX on my S9 and I have to say that I'm amazed! I also have a Chromebook and I think that I kinda regret buying it. I just plugged in my cheap usb c to hdmi + usb port dongle that I used for my Chromebook, and DeX started up right away! I did experience some crashes with apps and lag that wouldn't happen on my Chromebook, but the good thing about DeX is that I can use all the apps from the Play Store. Some apps wouldn't support my chromebook, such as Google Assistant. DeX's interface is similar to Chrome OS as well. Using an external mouse and keyboard works really well. I can see that as Samsung keeps improving DeX, more people well start to use their smartphones as their primary computers...
I've just started using Dex for when I need to access my work VDI in a pinch. On the Note 9 I carry a small USB-C to HDMI adapter and a iPazz bluetooth keyboard/touchpad. Citrix Workspace works just fine to connect in and get me to my desktop.
Sebastian but you'll have to carry this cradle too and it's not something you'll throw in your hand bag :( if you have a note 9 then sure, you're right !
yea it might be “beta”, but i think this could have a future. Imagine a smartphone with 200 gb of storage, a processor as fast as a desktop processor (and no heat issues) and android + windows 10 dualboot for desktop usage. I really want this to happen... :(
A lot of websites have a "Go to desktop site" at the bottom of the page. Also, for gmail, in the yellow box at the bottom of the page you can click on "Gmail view: Standard" to go to the normal desktop version.
Yea in most cases but there are alot of people that could get away with only this setup realistically. Unless your doing some real heavy apps. But you can even download files and with games like pubg mobile and fornite can even play some decent games now.
While I have a use case for it, I kinda agree. I wish Samsung went with something like the Asus Padfone was back in the day. That way it can function as a laptop and still do everything the current DeX can.
With Mobile Office, it's nice to be able to use Word and outlook on the fly. I use mine about 2-3 times a week when I need a full keyboard and monitor but don't wanna boot my whole laptop
I was thinking of utilizing DeX on my Note S10+.... to utilize my phone's video editing software (VivaVideo) but I heard you mention at the end of the video that DeX couldnt be used for video editing. Can you elaborate on that point?
Tldw; dex dock sucks and almost everything runs in small windows and cannot do full screen except vlc. Netflix Hulu and youtube don't do well with dex dock so major deal breaker, don't waste your money like I did.
i have the note 9.. still Samsung's best phone ever in their entire history.. But i use a generic usb-C dock.. It has an hdmi output for the monitor, 2 usb 3.1 ports, and ausb-c in for power.. You just plug it in and you go.. With the note 9 when you plug the phone into a monitor it will let you choose between screen mirroring or dex. Thats with ANY means of connecting a monitor via usb c.. doesnt have to be a dock.. But the 15$ dock i own has all the extra stuff on it to make it easier to use as a normal computer. I highly recommend anyone who cares more about certain features over the newer ones, to absolutely get the note 9 over the note 10. i cant wait to see what the note 20 is gonna be, but i doubt itll have half the features of the note 9. Dex is great. Works perfectly. Smoothe and flawless.
When I first heard about Dex I thought “that’s amazing!” but almost immediately afterwards I realised “...wait. It won’t have almost any app support...” (Not to mention PC apps...) This is a great concept, but untill it can run “big boi” OS’s I don’t think many people will use it...
I think this kind of thing will have to be built into Android by google, so that a lot of manufacturers have support for it by default, and app developers have a way bigger market to develop for
+Thunder Draws Yea, but even then, can you think of more than a couple of apps that you’d prefer to use in desktop mode? And I’m willing to bet that most if not all of those apps have PC variants...
@@ThunderDraws I haven't tried it, but he small window on a large screen doesn't seem that bad. What counts is that the fonts are legible. Full screen on a large screen is not essential.
I think, in Chrome you have an option to run every site as in Desktop. In top right corner click 3 dots and there will be an option like in youtube to run in Desktop version.
If microsoft dock for windows phone didn't work in 2015 and it was far better than this BS Crapdroid desktop, this one doesn't even deserves the struggle! :) at least from my perspective!
Hi, you can drag&drop you need to select items you want to drag, click on the icon and hold in file manager and drag them to samsung email or gmail app. Google gmail site works, but you have to use a link (you can get it from your PC browser and make a bookmark for future use). If you don't want mobile applications to open instead of website you have to go to settings->apps and then configure if the app is supposed to open instead of webpage or ask you with a dialog what to do
I have been using mine for over a year, I got the DeX with my S8+ during their pre-order promotion around April of 2017. I'm fairly surprised I do use it as often as I do. The experience isn't and will never be a laptop or let along a desktop PC but for use in a pinch, it is quite handy. There are 3rd party apps that unlock the windows size limitation and a few other features but it does take time to get used to for a new user that knows very little about PC/DeX usage.
I believe a small amount of power may be delivered to the phone via USB, however this is not enough to charge the battery, DEX will drain battery without a power connector. I bought a small mini dock on ebay for about $18. As well as a HDMI and USB3 connector, it also has a USB-C connector from your charger to the dock and another USB-C connector direct into your phone. This does keep your phone charged while using DEX.
can you work simultaneously with the DEX and your computer like the note 10? another question, is it enough connect the mouse and keyboard bluetooh to my laptop? or shoul I connect them to the Note 9? thanks
I'm not sure if dex has been updated, but when I purchased my s9, I also purchased a basic type C to HDMI adapter, and was able to activate dex from the notification screen
I've had this thing running on my s9+, playing games like beach buggy in split screen with Xbox Controllers without breaking a sweat! So much you can do with this thing and it's only gonna get better.. Loving it so far..
Some feedback from a fan of the channel:
- Eber complains about the mobile webpages in Chrome when there is a "Request Desktop Site" button in the Chrome options that will fix this issue for 90+% of websites
- Similarly in Gmail, it defaults to HTML view but you can see on the screen in the video there's a link to the standard desktop view. Click that and you're back to "normal" Gmail
Maybe with a bit of additional digging and instructions on how to leverage these options the video might have deserved to be 17mins. Eber tends to ramble more than Dimitri but this video is a bit of a slog.
yeah probably he is not use to android XD
I was surprised that this feature was not mentioned as "Desktop site" feature is old.

Chrome for Android has an option to "request desktop site" that might come in handy for this experience.
yeah thts what i was thinking about the whole video.
yes but its not persistent. you have to select it every time you visit a site.
Its a software thing so it can be changed its not permanent
Could always run Puffin Browser, or something like that.
Samsung Default browser is a good choice. I actually use it more than Chrome.

Yeah this has been my dream since laptops were main stream, condense them into a phone. I think this would be a great excuse to sell say $2000+ phones... which would be no problem for most people (me at least) if the graphics would be able to push e3 games at around 60fps. The future is exciting!!
Huawei's did it last year tho.
You are describing the rumored "MIcrosoft Surface phone".
Steady on mate. Don't piss your pants. FFS
I love DeX so far.
On that gmail app, you were in HTML view that's why it looks old. You could actually click on the standard view.
@Gaming Authority haha. That's fine, it happens.

this is actually something basic that a tech guy should know, how do they become tech youtubers
Yea this guy sucks. Rushed overview. This guy dont know shit,
shouldn't be that complicated.
I'm using Dex on N9 for about 6 weeks basically working with MS Office (Word and Excel), and it surprised me big time. I though it was just a toy, but it really works.
Comparing it to pc functions it's a toy, and not a very good one

Once more powerful processors make their way to mobile devices - this will be revolutionary
The biggest problem with this is that you’d need a *massive* battery to be able to use that thing for more than an hour...
maybe, if ur trying to buy a brick with a smol processor maybe? I mean any decent laptop is at least $500
You already broke the back of the Note 9? That was quick.
Its a glass phone, glass is never as reliable as plastic or metal. All the toughest devices uses plastic screens instead of glass.
It was my plan to comment the same 😁
@@SMGJohn IMO I'd better deal with possible cracks than inevitable scratches on plastic screen.

NEO STARK Was thinking the same the Gmail xD
He thinks he knows latest technology but apparently he cant fake it lol
fucking idiot man hahahahah.... so annoyed me when he didn't click standard especially
So yeah
Also enabling Dex labs allows you to resize any app, and it works well
Yeah. He didnt' do a good review at all.
Imagine getting Samsung DeX compatibility on the Gear/Galaxy watches. I would feel like Tony Stark.
Yeah, that's not happening. It doesn't have nearly enough processing power, and even if it had, you'd be out of battery power in like 30min max.
Not in the next two decades at least.
Samuel Maier well if it was charging at the same time
If you're okay with nuclear-powered battery....
I use DeX everyday with my Note 8, been using it for a year (about a year)
Any feedback? Please share. Thx
So Im french, bluetooth or usb keyboards on DeX are automatically switched to international QWERTY, a bit annoying since we have AZERTY. You have to go to "physical keyboard" in settings and then change the keyboards to your preferred setting
RUclips since like early 2018, unfortunately stretches the video on the horizontal axis when you go on DeX FROM using it on mobile (most times) and you have to reset it by emptying the cache or erasing data as you would to activate HDR in order for DeX to show RUclips in its proper DeX configuration
speaking of HDR, sometimes watching content that's HDR on DeX on a non HDR content compatible monitor might crash the game after displaying a black screen.
Dell Mobile Connect works with DeX, and you can mirror DeX but when you touch the mirrored DeX on your computer the part you touch of the DeX Window on your computer wont be the part where your cursor actually.
When using the camera with the samsung camera app, you can only have 18.5:9 portrait format and you have access to no other buttons than video photo or switch camera front and main back camera, no flash no slow motion etc
browsing is easy, listening to music as well, I dont know if the headphone jack of the phone still works cuz I dont have an extender
touchscreen is available but I havent tested it myself
Fan is audible when in a quiet room but otherwise it isn't disturbing at all.
With no Samsung Clear Cover you can use the phone as a trackpad and keyboard since Oreo update
When plugging the phone YOU MIGHT run into issues of resolution, sometimes it displays 720p despite using a 1080p monitor because a connection has been improperly made, or the screen goes erratic (I have a video on my channel showing that + hidden upside down feature)
cant use office apps on DeX as it considers that its desktop setup
Youll need to use the samsung browser thing and then use the desktop site to use online Office on DeX
Making calls you use your bluetooth device for both microphone and speaker to hear if it sports microphone otherwise you will have to use the phone's own microphone ... echoes
Some apps will have to be fullscreen to properly be used, Textra for example, which also cant be used to the full extent in split screen on the phone alone (multi tasking)
SOMETIMES in Chrome or other apps if you have the cursor on the left it
your sentence will be written like this
siht ekil nettirw ecnetnes ruoy, doesnt happen often
SOMETIMES, I dont know if the phone is at fault, the connection or the dock/heat : the phone might discharge, not till 0% battery life, also it takes longer to charge the phone with the DeX station

I record stuff on my laptop from the DeX with Elgato gamecap HD60S and bypass the DRM/HDCP preventive measure thing that prevents from screenshooting
I use DeX to browse and send messages also. Manage my files
Also used it to put on some movies for my nephew or mother on TVs, or share somethings with friends, take notes to class (when I could)

you can go into dex settings and essentially force apps to work with it. some apps might not work correctly but it lets you full screen any app if you do it that way.
17 mins and not a single Microsoft Office sample? Yeah, so... Glorified mirror cast?

This is simple. Just like an iPad Pro, a Samsung Dex is not meant to replace a computer..it is meant to make things easier for consumers by adding productivity on the go in a case you cannot carry a full pc around with you. There is so much Dex is capable of doing but will never replace a full pc

You don’t need to drag the edges for full screen. You can change that in settings for force full screen. Process below:
Pull down the notification bar and head to Settings (gear-shaped icon near the top right)
Find and select Display
Select the option labeled Full Screen Apps
Find an app that isn’t highlighted and switch full screen mode to on
Force any app into full screen mode and you’re all set
Dude you didn't even cover the most important thing which is how does Microsoft office and Google docs run on it even though you have MS Excel app on you desktop : (
Have been using those for a year now.. they work just as they would on a full blown pc no issues. For Google docs and sheets used the Samsung browser instead of the app.. you get all the capabilities.
@@suyashtoshniwal I heard Dex still uses the mobile version of Office apps which sucks since the PC version of Office has a lot more options.
Good video. Never used DeX myself, but a lot of users below are pointing out to issues/stuff that you missed out on. Hope you can comment on the same, so that people on the fence(like me) have a bit more clarity.
Summarizing them here :
1. More liberal use of "Request for Desktop Site".
2. Clicking on "Standard Desktop view" for the gmail website that you opened.
3. Demo of a few more popular Android games from various genres.
4. Using MS products (like Excel, Word, Powerpoint etc.)
5. Using apps like DeX Max for scaling .
You can use firefox and use the option "force request desktop version" and it's nearly Identical.
Definitely get DeX. it's worth it. I know three college students who are using DeX for their computers at college and home.
There's an option for Standard View at the bottom of Gmail website. You're viewing the basic HTML version that is why it looks old. :P
1. You were in Gmail HTML mode
2. you can open every website in Desktop-Mode
I need network connection. So, for jaybee0507, London is in an undeveloped country.... gosh!

@@xristoskontos1280 yeah TV's with HDMI input work just fine with DeX.
Yes! Thanks for the info im going to use my spare phone for this exact reason! Perfect! I appreciate the time you took making this video.
This is cool, but how many people will actually use DeX?
i can think of many, i have 2 freinds that are very stingy and don't want to invest on a desktop computer, this could be their answer to not only upgrade their phones, but finally have a desktop setup using the Note 9. as a University student the only stuff i require are Internet, email access, microsoft office like word excel powerpoint etc, phone, texts and apps , all Which are usable with the android system. Yes i write my papers using microsoft word on my phone.
It's doesn't matter now. If it becomes better and better, more user will use it. I have an s8+ but I don't have Dex adapter, but I always wanted to try it. I bet if it will came with out-of the box adapter everybody will try it.
Many actually. I know thousands of people who use it all over the world.
Anybody like me that finds Windows 10 to be completely unusable.
Request desktop site in Chrome. Come on, you're supposed to know this stuff- It's you're job after all.
Nah. It's better to just use Samsung Internet browser instead. Chrome sucks on Samsung DeX.
You can scale... it's a force full screen dex settings in the dex settings on the top of the page of settings
For me M$ is completely dead. It does not provide a pleasurable user experience at all.
Samsung Internet is MILES better than Chrome due to the following:
- It has DeX support integrated so you wouldn't be running into that mobile website annoyance
- it offers support for adblock extensions (not some integrated one that'll easily get outdated)
- It has a very handy video manager extension that allows you view in full-screen/PIP/VR any video you come across on the web
- It's got a fully-customizable speed-dial new-tab screen
- Smooth and continuous scrolling text selection (other browsers inconsistently stop when you get to the bottom of the screen)
- Fast and secure web sign-in with biometrics
- Can be integrated with Bixby quick-commands (especially handy for them websites which don't have a mobile app yet you use often)
- Syncs with Chrome on the Desktop too via the Samsung Internet extension.
This comment needs more attention... Samsung Internet is hands down the most underrated app of 2018.
I have an s9 and somehow I just connected to my hdmi and it was automatically activated
I think It's because of android 9
I thnk you are making very good points.
Thank you for making this video and giving your honest opinion from a PC user perspective. For sure Samsung would like for us to utilize the optimized apps for DeX and the drag and drop works when using the Samsung apps. I too hope that Samsung continues to improve this system as it can be very handy in a pinch.
Run Linux on top of android and you’ll basically have a full desktop experience.

Its February 2020 and my first time on here i LOVE the information about this it was well done thank you for sharing this
Your an apple user if you don't know when to switch to desktop mode in chrome.

Dex works with most dongles too lmao
The 2k restriction is in DeX, the USB-C adapters all are 4k, but only if that's supported, as in normal screen mirroring
Google is developing fusia thats why chrome os isnt fast developed
Professional apps like adobe premier? Or what kind of apps?

I would use it for RDP and Citrix sessions as a thin-client
I'd be happy to use this as a secondary pc but not in this price.
It will be used since if you need to edit stuff on microsoft office and do other things while traveling this is great for that
Sebastian but you'll have to carry this cradle too and it's not something you'll throw in your hand bag :( if you have a note 9 then sure, you're right !
yea it might be “beta”, but i think this could have a future.
Imagine a smartphone with 200 gb of storage, a processor as fast as a desktop processor (and no heat issues) and android + windows 10 dualboot for desktop usage. I really want this to happen... :(
Drag and drop is supported on DEX, for Samsung Email or your Messages App.
pleas try streaming games like Fallout4 or Gta 5 in 4k over DeX
I can do that for you. I'll be on it :)
Expect videos soon.
A lot of websites have a "Go to desktop site" at the bottom of the page. Also, for gmail, in the yellow box at the bottom of the page you can click on "Gmail view: Standard" to go to the normal desktop version.
I feels like more of a gimmic than something actually practical... Laptops are still needed in our lifes
Yea in most cases but there are alot of people that could get away with only this setup realistically. Unless your doing some real heavy apps. But you can even download files and with games like pubg mobile and fornite can even play some decent games now.
facepalm: nobody said it was meant to replace laptops, obviously
you don't "need" a laptop
Not really, I don't need a laptoip.
Booting and opening office on lap doesnt even take 25 secs xD
*Title stolen from Linustechtips*
NO! IT IS NOT YOU HATE... oh crap
can we connect a keyboard and mouse with its wireless receiver or it supports only bluetooth mouse and keyboard?
NOICE
I was thinking of utilizing DeX on my Note S10+.... to utilize my phone's video editing software (VivaVideo) but I heard you mention at the end of the video that DeX couldnt be used for video editing. Can you elaborate on that point?
Tldw; dex dock sucks and almost everything runs in small windows and cannot do full screen except vlc. Netflix Hulu and youtube don't do well with dex dock so major deal breaker, don't waste your money like I did.
Its called configuring it mine does everything in full screen view
i have the note 9.. still Samsung's best phone ever in their entire history..
It won’t have almost any app support...” (Not to mention PC apps...)
This is a great concept, but untill it can run “big boi” OS’s I don’t think many people will use it...
It will be able to run "big boi" OS's very soon. Much sooner than you think :) wink wink.
First
Luckas Vildner actually first
Samsung did a very good job with the DeX's UI. It looks so much better and functional than the default Android home screen on tablets IMO.
If microsoft dock for windows phone didn't work in 2015 and it was far better than this BS Crapdroid desktop, this one doesn't even deserves the struggle! :) at least from my perspective!
m cip Exactly
Isn't the Windows Phone completely dead now? It must not have been very good.
Thank you for this thorough video :) there isn't enough Dex mode vids out there !
I use DEX everyday using my Note9. If samsung introduce this feature in their mid range devices, this will surely hit the mass market.
There are 3rd party apps that unlock the windows size limitation and a few other features but it does take time to get used to for a new user that knows very little about PC/DeX usage.
usb c hubs can be used as long as power is injected and you will get the optons on the 8 series
great.. but: does the simple USB/HDMi adapter keep the phone battery charged or not? Thx
