One of my dad's favorite stories to tell is how, when we first played the game, we were both blown away by the fact you can see the players breath in the cold. According to him we were both convinced that graphics could never get any better than that.
This game to this day showcased the biggest graphical jump between generations that my eyes have ever seen. I'll never forget seeing footage of this for the first time from a trade show on my local Los Angeles Fox affiliate. Man I ran to get the dreamcast and this game on 9/9/99. I opened the cardboard box and saw NFL 2K. I flipped that jewel case over….saw the graphics and I NEEDED a Dreamcast on 9/9/99. I had so much fun with this game. Whatever TV I put it on, someone passing by always said “oh, I thought that was a real game!”. Good times
My brother and I saved our money and bought the Dreamcast on launch. It's the only older system I still have and play every now and then. Obviously it doesn't look as good as my ps5 or series X, but the 2k sports games (including NHL 2k games) are where it's at.

With the recent developments regarding the issues surrounding name, image, and likeness of college athletes, what are the odds that 2K makes an NCAA football simulation game in the future? I'd love to see that happen.
Relearning how to play the 2k series after 15 years of Madden crap was the most satisfying thing. It feels so great to have actual control in a video game
Love these retrospectives. I never played this particular one, but plenty of 2K1. Bought it again recently. It's still fun. Visual concepts knew what they were doing, improving each yr and gave us their magnum opus, 2K5. Wonder if you plan on doing something on the NFL fever series eventually. Those were cool
Funny enough, my grandad recently moved into a retirement home, and since he had to move he gave away a bunch of his old stuff to my mom, one of the things he gave us was a Sega Dreamcast with a bunch of games, one of them being NFL 2k, tried it for the first time last week, game is fun and was ahead of it's time.
Countless hours of franchise mode with The Ravens, Vikings, Cowboys, and Tampa Bay as a kid...I wish we could go back to those years when we weren't just stuck with one Football title
I bought 2k5 thanks to your videos. Took a while for me to get the hang of it because I don’t usually play sports games or watch sports in general but boy is it satisfying when I successfully touchdown! Glad I subed to you and keep up the great work.
Yep. SoftDrink got me to buy 2K5 as well and I’m so glad he did. This is the game I needed gameplay wise as a diehard football fan. Best football game I’ve ever played and I recommend it to all of my football teammates
@@GreenBayPayton Cool. After that I bought NFL Blitz 2003, and Madden 07. As expected Blitz is simple Arcade fun while 07 from what I've played so far sort of falls in between being realistic and arcade style which is definitely not a bad thing. 3 football games are enough for now but I'll definetly keep an opened mind to try out more eventually.
Softdrink's videos convinced me to get NFL 2K5 as well as NFL Fever 2004, NFL Primetime 2002, and NFL GameDay 2004. I played NFL 2K5 on my parents living room TV the other day with the 2020 rosters uploaded to the game and the game set to 1080p HD. My dad was blown away by how life-like the player models, stadium models, game broadcast, and color commentary were.
this was one of the first football games I ever played when my friend gave me his dreamcast. there is more attention to detail in a game from 1999 than there is in current madden and that is equal parts amazing and equal parts sad.
As always your videos are always on point. Unfortunately it's sad the pinnacle of sports gaming is behind us, hopefully things will change for the the better in the he next 5-7 years. Anyways, great video my guy. Cheers 🥃🥃
The first 2K football game I ever played was NFL 2K2 on the PS2, since I didn't have a dreamcast. It was a great game, and I thought it was much better than Madden 2002, though I did like both games. The gameplay was so fun in 2K2, and all of the 2K football games.
I got (and still have) the original NFL 2K for Dreamcast and it was incredible... But I'll never forget passing up on NFL 2K5 because I thought the $19.99 price tag meant it was crap - that it was cheap because it would literally be cheap. Turned out to be a game spoken of today like a legendary tale that the younger generation thinks was only a story.. It was real. It really happened... A masterpiece that was sold for $20 on the day it released. I hate EA. I hate that company so much.
I remember seeing NFL2k in EB games window, and immediately buying a Dreamcast that moment. I was a beast with the Ravens. Then when 2K1 had online, just remember being able to chat in the lobbies. Miss those days...
The only game series where I could rack up over 100 tackles as a MLB because The control is so precise. In Madden you get sucked into so many animations it’s like you’re not even playing.
Playing 2k football on my dreamcast was great fun. Shutting off pentalites and tackling the qb before the ball was hiked made my dad roar with laughter. I miss those days.
NFL 2K...Still an outstanding game to this very day. I'll never forget when my pops rented this and NBA 2K during my 11th birthday in 2000 and being in awe of the outstanding gameplay in both games and the music in the NFL 2K game. The theme song still gets stuck in my head to this very day. I ended up getting these games later and I'm glad that I still have them (along with my Dreamcast). I do miss the NFL 2K series and I feel old telling youngsters that there was a such series.
for me, NFL 2K2 was the goat of the 2k games. I recognize that the original 2k was probably the better overall game, 2k2 was the most fun. I remember playing my brother every night before bed time on a school night. I would go to school and think about how me and my brother were gonna play tonight right before bedtime.
Had all 3 Dreamcast NFL 2Ks. Man what a time to be alive. I instantly forgot about madden for a while but that's Also cause EA wasnt developing sports games or games in general for DC. NFL 2K1 was the pinnacle of Football games. You know how dope it was playing it online back in 2000? So fun. Please take me back
Idk why I didn't think of this now, but when I brought up NFL 2K's return one of my friends thought they'll be pulling a NASCAR Ignition. However, I realized mid-video that that's basically what EA has been doing for the better part of the past 10 years. Hype up the new Madden as a game changer, get people to buy Madden, and then leave them hoping the next one will be better when they get disappointed by the current Madden. Like as if they're buying for the future like the people who bought the 8th gen NASCAR Heat games.
Love your videos man. Your Apf 2k8 video got me really interested in playing it and I’ve been playing it for over a month now. Still can’t figure out the editor cuz I’m stupid af lmao. Keep making great content man all love
I grew up on the 2k football games and remember getting DC 2k football. I was just floored with how the game felt, then 2k5 came out and it blew me away, and when APF 2k8 on PS3 came out i was like, man, I'm in heaven with this game play, no past Madden titles came or come close to it. I still own all 3 2k games mentioned here. I'm still looking for an NCAA zip file roster for APF 2k8 as i got an 1993 NY Giants roster and all teams from that year on the APF discord channel.
I first saw gameplay of this when my best friend at the time invited me to his cousins house, they had a Dreamcast and they were playing NFL 2K. It looked so damn real to me. I still didn't understand football that much, I was around 11, but I was interested in learning about football. Funnily enough, I learned everything about football by playing Madden 2003 and NFL 2K3. It became my favorite sport, and my favorite video games to play were football games.
NFL 2k was a game changer. The graphics, the game play and reality of the game was awesome. All pro 2k8 is a great game. I bought that game when it came out and told people that it was head and shoulders above Madden but no one would believe. I am glad I still have all pro 2k8
I remember the day I realized that the slant pass in this game was had damn near a 100% success rate, haha. I had to stop myself from calling it just to preserve the challenge.
One part that I feel needs to be brought up: Visual Concepts actually worked on the Madden games during the Genesis days, and were tasked with bringing Madden 96 to the Playstation. However, it played so poorly that EA canceled the 96 edition on Playstation and parted ways with Visual Concepts, paving the way for 2K P.S. you can find a ROM of Madden 96 on PS and play it on an emulator (it's EXTREMELY buggy tho)
I remember like it was yesterday. Me and my friend were waiting for this game store to open. They had this demo in the window and me and my friend were just standing there in awe.
I remember the first time I ever saw a promotion for nfl2k was in the previews before s movie. Seeing it on that huge screen I was blown away by what the graphics and gameplay looked like. I was only 16 at the time and at that moment I knew the Dreamcast was going to be the first console I ever purchased with my own money. Convieniently saw the promotion at a movie theatre at the mall, so as soon as the movie was over I went and put down a 5 dollar pre order hole on the Dreamcast at the kaybee hobby in the mall. Me and my friends spent countless hours playing this and NBA2k. This was also the first game I ever played on the internet, granted the 56k modem made it a laggy mess for me so I only tried it a few times.
I wonder what 2K would have to lose by simply sneaking in the settings etc for simulation football? I am not sure how but we all know how the parts and pieces were put into good wrestling games to create wrestlers that were not in the games. So, you create an arcade style NFL game but with certain settings changed, etc it becomes a light simulation football game. I mean, 2K could just say that the simulation aspects are due to how the users themselves set up the games/matches etc.
You know. Soft Drink, you make badass videos. I would have never been inspired to seek out my own copy of ESPN NFL 2k5 without your video on it. And I'll tell you, if you could take the foundation that 2k5 created for a legendary football game and apply modern day technological development advances, WOW. What could have been if the NFL actually cared about lending its name to a quality product.
2K sports on dreamcast was the greatest graphical jump ever. Going from the N64/PS1 era, to NFL 2K was insane !!! Seeing 2K on display at Bestbuy, and being able to play it while in the store seemed surreal. We thought NFL Quarterback Club 98' on N64 was as realistic as it got, until Dreamcast released. Even going from PS2 to PS3, or going from PS4 to PS5.....no graphical jump will ever be as absurd as going from 64 and Ps1 to Dreamcast.

With the recent developments regarding the issues surrounding name, image, and likeness of college athletes, what are the odds that 2K makes an NCAA football simulation game in the future? I'd love to see that happen.
I might try to buy a Dreamcast so I can play the OG NFL 2K.
The animations was so fluid and smooth.
Great video as always. The 2k series will always be a favorite of mine. I can't stand Madden and EA for what they've done to football video games.
Madden 05 will always be my football simulation favorite, thank you for these videos, takes me back big time.
this was one of the first football games I ever played when my friend gave me his dreamcast. there is more attention to detail in a game from 1999 than there is in current madden and that is equal parts amazing and equal parts sad.
As always your videos are always on point. Unfortunately it's sad the pinnacle of sports gaming is behind us, hopefully things will change for the the better in the he next 5-7 years. Anyways, great video my guy. Cheers 🥃🥃
quality video as always from SoftDrink. I wish 2k would make an other All Pro game with more legends and a franchise.
I wish the 2k football games were still being made to this day here. I loved the 2k football series!
The first 2K football game I ever played was NFL 2K2 on the PS2, since I didn't have a dreamcast. It was a great game, and I thought it was much better than Madden 2002, though I did like both games. The gameplay was so fun in 2K2, and all of the 2K football games.
2K5 is still highly playable. So good
I got (and still have) the original NFL 2K for Dreamcast and it was incredible...
Hate the NFL as well for offering exclusivity to EA in the first place.

Love this channel! ✌🏻
It’s always a good day when SDTV posts a new video
This going to be another banger I can already tell
Keep up the great work soft drink
Honestly the best NFL based football series ever made. I still enjoy it to this day.
Man this is great. I miss the Dreamcast. Hopefully there's a Dreamcast mini in the near future with some great games on it.
Thank you softdrink!
EA knew that Madden would’ve got murked by NFL 2K
I remember seeing NFL2k in EB games window, and immediately buying a Dreamcast that moment. I was a beast with the Ravens. Then when 2K1 had online, just remember being able to chat in the lobbies. Miss those days...
The only game series where I could rack up over 100 tackles as a MLB because The control is so precise. In Madden you get sucked into so many animations it’s like you’re not even playing.
10/10 video
now all we need is the NHL 2K series and the 989 Sports series
The physics in this game was phenomenal
Also, you could pick your plays via the VMU on your controller and your opponent on the couch couldn't see
for me, NFL 2K2 was the goat of the 2k games. I recognize that the original 2k was probably the better overall game, 2k2 was the most fun. I remember playing my brother every night before bed time on a school night. I would go to school and think about how me and my brother were gonna play tonight right before bedtime.
I still have a dreamcast. Only games I have are nfl 2k and ncaa football 2k2
Lots of all nighters in 1999-2000 playing the 2k series in college
Had all 3 Dreamcast NFL 2Ks. Man what a time to be alive. I instantly forgot about madden for a while but that's Also cause EA wasnt developing sports games or games in general for DC. NFL 2K1 was the pinnacle of Football games. You know how dope it was playing it online back in 2000? So fun. Please take me back
NFL 2k1 is still the greatest football game ever 💯😂💪
I’m still waiting for the Sarasota Seamen to return
Idk why I didn't think of this now, but when I brought up NFL 2K's return one of my friends thought they'll be pulling a NASCAR Ignition. However, I realized mid-video that that's basically what EA has been doing for the better part of the past 10 years. Hype up the new Madden as a game changer, get people to buy Madden, and then leave them hoping the next one will be better when they get disappointed by the current Madden. Like as if they're buying for the future like the people who bought the 8th gen NASCAR Heat games.
My only frame of reference before this game was GameDay 99 on PS1. NFL 2K blew my mind as a kid when I first played it.
Dreamcast was ahead of PlayStation with graphics. I don’t know what happened
Hey Mr. Drink, would you ever do a MLB or football/soccer game retrospective?
Yet another reason why I’m pissed that I was born in 2007. I never got the experience to play NFL 2K games. They look emaculate
Imagine an nfl 2k game with an eras mode like nba 2k, that would be amazing.
Love your videos man. Your Apf 2k8 video got me really interested in playing it and I’ve been playing it for over a month now. Still can’t figure out the editor cuz I’m stupid af lmao. Keep making great content man all love
This shit was my jam on my father's Dreamcast...
You do phenomenal coverage on this topic.
Thanks for the great videos bro
I had 2k1 and that game is one of my favorites to this day
I still play 2k5. These so called pro madden players would lose every game. Can't cheat or keep running the same play on 2k5
People could always go back and play NFL2K
But instead they settle for "Madden Elite 11"
I love your videos, I'd love to see a breakdown of the Backyard sports games, childhood defined
However, it played so poorly that EA canceled the 96 edition on Playstation and parted ways with Visual Concepts, paving the way for 2K
P.S. you can find a ROM of Madden 96 on PS and play it on an emulator (it's EXTREMELY buggy tho)
Should've had a clip to let people hear the play by play and the sound effects just to better show the masterpiece this game really was.
The NFL has it's part in this football desert.
This the best video ever made about this topic
I remember stayin in from school when this came out and spend all day playing this game.. I miss those days
I remember like it was yesterday. Me and my friend were waiting for this game store to open. They had this demo in the window and me and my friend were just standing there in awe.
Hey! It's Enrico Pallazzo! (I had to do that as I have been watching movie reactors react to The Naked Gun)
I played this game 10 years ago for the 2011 NFL season. It was an awesome game. I was the Rams and the Titans in season mode.
I remember getting this game and a Dreamcast for Xmas it blew my mind that the game started to look like what I would see in real life.
They should make it 12 on 12 and just put an extra old school fullback in the backfield...💯🍺🍺💯
Think I'm going to get myself NFL2k5 for christmas. Never played a football game.
Sitting here playing NHL2k8 atm.
Hell, some might argue Madden is an arcade style game
@@joelkirkwood8224 Damn right. Especially since at least PS2 era, it has been.
nfl 2k games felt larger than life back then
Great video man hopefully 2k will have a quality nfl game out soon
Playing 2k5 resurrected on my laptop such a great feeling to play a football game, stopped playing madden in 11
I was never a big sports game fan or played much of them but I really did admire those Sega Sports NFL games.
Hands down the first 2K on Dreamcast is the best football game ever. We played this game endlessly in the barracks and on ship.
Dreamcast my favorite console so I appreciate this man thank you
2K sports on dreamcast was the greatest graphical jump ever.
