Is it possible to put shrimp in an Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture set up where the shrimp only eats the waste from the finfish in a marine fish cage?
Hi what is the stocking density for the vannamei in extensive and semi- intensive in open ponds by relying in diatoms? And can we apply nitrate even already have a shrimp in pond in brackish water with a 7.4 ph and 32 Celsius
What happened during rainy season? Its always cloudy and no bright sun light... My water PH and DO doesnt seems to fluctuate much, (PH 7.3-7.8) (DO 3.2-5.3) is it because there are no sun light or there is something wrong? I am still waiting for bright sunny day to give nitrate fertilizer on the water.. I did lime and nitrate the soil...
Hi Charles, true for when we grow pure diatoms in the lab or hatchery. No need to supplement silica in pond waters, it is not a limiting factor for diatom levels we can reach any way. I have tested also adding silica once though and it actually backfired on me in the sense that dinoflagellates bloomed (dinoflagellates also have silica shells). Luckily they were not toxic.
@@MrChristian2982 Hi Christian, silicate makes no difference in ponds. If you water is crystal, oceanic clear you will need a higher Nitrate dose like 100kg/ha and a phosphate based fertilizer too like TSP at 10kg/ha for it to work, and must be a full sunny cloudless day
Using such mode of water prepration and providing 12 hp paddle wheel aeration on 1 hectare pond of 1.5 metre depth how much of production one can take?
Hi..thanks for providing details related to the planktation where I am more interested in the growth of diatoms…so the application of Sodium nitrate has to be 10-25 kg per ha.. 1) but wanted to know whether this fertiliser should be ok if we apply in any type of pond or not I.e..sand soil, black soil or mix..?? 2) The water that will be filled is with near by creek, bore water and canal water as well..would this fertiliser have a good impact in these water combinations as well?? 3) We are liming the pond with 12 bags per ha and 18 Kgs of zinc per ha.. @@hashtagfish8542 Here, we usually just add fertilizer to the soil and water.. Then we replacing 10-30% of the water every week... And we dont give any feed..
Hi, Sugianto. Unless you are using crystal clear oceanic water as your intake, still no need for SP3 because it is very likely that there will be sufficient P in the incoming water for getting a good diatom bloom, and also the shrimp feeds already have more than enough phosphorous that will leach to the water to keep the bloom after stocking. Try that with Sodium (or Calcium) Nitrate only and let me know. But if if you have 100% lined ponds I'd go with biofloc system (if you have sufficient aeration for that) because it is much more stable method as I describe in Shrimp #13 video.

Hello , thanks for all your videos, it is very instructive. I have a question when you mention the fertilization of the pond with sodium nitrates. In india, some semi-intensive farm use fermented rice bran with probiotics to stimulate natural productivity and restore old degraded pond bottom, it is the Aquamimicry concept. Since i'm working in an semi-intensive Organic shrimp farm (Europe specifications) of P Monodon, i wish to use fermented rice bran to stimulate natural zooplancton (copepods) in the pond to biocontrol phytoplancton bloom and provide natural food for shrimps. I wanted to know your point of view about this practices in the case we can not employ sodium nitrate. For your information, we are in an open system without aerators in 10 ha earthern ponds.
Our density is between 9 and 12 juveniles (0.5 - 1 g) / m² Our pond bottom is mainly dark now but we can not measure precisely the amount of OM in the soil. pH after a crop cycle is about between 5.9 and 6.8.
Hi , when your pond is dry measure OM the simple way we recommend in the videos, see detail in the video description. Point is"You can't manage what you don't measure" (not my phrase, but it is true). You need to be systematic if you want to be successful. Bottom is somewhat acidic, so without the full story I would not add any more OM in the pond because more likely it will make things worse for your shrimp.
How do you decide which plankton you want ?Diatome or Chloropyta ? about the growth curve color I can not see the meaning of multi color ? what pink and other color represent 🙏🏼 wait, your data is for Vannamei shrimp ?
Hi, yes, this is data of L. vannamei farm I managed. In open systems, we use nitrate and no phosphates to promote diatoms, but all other algae will also be present. This recipe is to give diatoms the best chance to bloom over others. Each color represents the data for a particular shrimp pond. Blue, green and yellow are for ponds with good natural productivity (oxygen and pH fluctuations, good growth and lower FCR). The pink color is data of a pond where I could not get good natural productivity because that bivalve became a pest, sucking all the phytoplankton before copepods could benefit. In turn shrimp growth was poor and FCR was high.

liner is more costly, but you can surely kill any pathogen left from the previous cycle when you drain the pond and let it dry, which is not entirely possible with earth ponds. Also preparation time is much faster from one cycle to the next. With earth ponds, you cannot do intensive culture (more than 60 m2) because aeration needed stirs up the soil too much clogging the shrimp gills.
it depends on which system and stocking density is indented, this will vary from preparing a diatom dominated system, a biofloc system (next videos) or a hybrid starting with algal based and ending up with a bacteria dominated system...
