Importantly, this video covers the often neglected concept of the Carrying Capacity (or Supporting Capacity) of any system and surrounding environment to sustainably hold and maintain the cultured biomass.

Thanks for the informative video, I am a shrimp farm supervisor in the South East Asia and what you have mentioned is true that in the past, treatment of effluent is not a necessity and in the end bite us back in the rear end. Whilst I understand what need to be done, we don't get the support from the management to improve or adapt while still clinging on to the times where we had great harvest from the super intensive culture. I hope my managers get to see this video and learn that farming nowadays must be supported with scientific methods.

Approx 7 months ago, on a 12 hectare series of ponds located 1.5kms river upstream from sea I have set up a 150 heads chicken layer farm. The droppings collect beneath the cage in a small concrete tank isolated from all ponds.
In the ponds I have placed scylla serrata and olivacea crabs, milkfish. P indicus shrimp (stays alive out of water at least for an hour - a lot sturdier than your vannamei) naturally enters the pond gates during high tides. Two full tidal water per day are controlled at the gates.
4 months ago, I started pumping the mixture of droppings/saltwater alternately in the inner ponds and deliberately kept the main entry pond (approx 7000 sqm) and the irrigation canal (approx 1500sqm) as is (no pumped droppings). My monthly (new moon) indicus harvest (via the main pond) increased from a baseline of 10 - 15kg, to 20, then 35 and became 80kg last month.
Till now, my secchi disk readings for all treated ponds were 18 to 36inches visibility so I am thinking my algae / planktons are much under the optimum range. My target visiblity is 14 to 18 inches. I intend to stop any droppings transfer to any pond when readings come close to 12 inches.
Your hopefully constructive comments on my set-up will be much appreciated.

Hi Isko, you seem to have a unique and natural set up. I hope you are enjoying and making a bit of money on the side. There is nothing I can comment on, but yes, when the transparency gets less than 25cm stop w the manure. Best regards, Jose

Thank you for such a fast reply. We just started back to school. I have a small freshwater aquaponics system of about 60 gallons and a small 40 gallon aquarium in our classroom which we can set up as brackish or slightly saline. I’m thinking about the use of these tools at this time and for now we are starting a study on sustainable practices in shrimp aquaculture.
I’ve hatched Pacific King Salmon in a 50 gallon freshwater cooler system and we’ve kept a few freshwater tolerant shrimp (grass shrimp) but nothing at a larger scale.

nice introduction and overview, thank you for sharing! We think the improvement and proper use of more and better technology is inevitable, for better outcomes for farms, the sector and very importantly the enviromnent. This can fuel a "blue revolution 4.0". And one more topic to add: energy consumption. To round up an eco-friendly farm, it should not be Diesel or fossil fuel based :-)

Hi, aerators are a must. If you are the only shrimp farmer in an isolated island, changing water is okay.
