Talking Watches With Jay Kumar, Restaurateur And Watch Collector From Basel To Brooklyn

- If you're traveling through New York and looking for a mind-bendingly great meal, head to Park Slope, Brooklyn, for a meal by Jay Kumar at his restaurant LORE. I promise you won't be disappointed. The Indian-born, Oman-raised, Basel-trained culinary genius has mastered the art of fusion in a way that brings every step of his life's story into his food for the most amazing, tasty results. But as much as I love a good meal, I love good people and good watches as much, if not more. And if you're like me, LORE will feel even more like home.
It's a wide-ranging selection of watches, with a few brands we don't see that often and at least one brand that is being featured on Talking Watches for the first time. Some fill a practical role for the chef. Others are driven by emotional connections or just a love and gut feeling that has driven many watch collectors to make impulsive decisions to add a new watch to the collection. But I won't spoil the stories that Kumar tells so well.

A real watch collector like this is great to see. It's better than a famous persons rolex collection.
You are kind of correct. I could listen to Mayer talking about watches for hours. 😂
@@alexanderverdoodt haha good point. He's the exception.
I mean nothing is wrong with either
I love to see this and also Rolex collectors, spread love mate
Mark took a few hits here for his interviewing style, but I think he is just a chilled kind of a guy, and I for one appreciate the fact that he lets his guest speak. He doesn’t try to talk over them or take over the interview like many other people I’ve seen doing collector spots on RUclips. Thanks, really enjoyed this one Hodinkee!
His follow-up questions could be better perhaps, but I don't see any major problems with the interviewer. We want to hear the guests speak, not the interviewer. He'll get better as he interviews more people. Also, I think the camera/photography decisions didn't do Mark any favors. Why show long close-ups of Mark's face as the guest is speaking?
Cool story true collector. interviewer super weird. Doesn't know watches
What a super cool guest. I really liked his flow. I would definitely stop by his restaurant for a meal ( making sure to wear a special watch to get his attention).
His restaurant is super great. Truly amazing food from an amazing person.
@@ShamikChaudhuri0did you get to see him or was he tucked away in the kitchen? I kinda want to visit just to see the guy lol
Me too
If I'm ever in Brooklyn, I think I'll stop by and show him my one Omega watch collection. ❤
Same 😂
This guy is pretty cool. Love hearing about his story
This reminded me of older talking watches episodes. Really enjoyed this one. Keep em coming HODINKEE
Loved this talk. Jay is a good story teller. What an interesting life he has lived so far!
This is what watch collecting is all abt.. there are some watches that we go looking for.. then there are some watches that come looking for us.. every watch has a story or a memory attached to it.. wear what u like.. beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. no one watch is greater than another.. they all tell the time..
awesome
This is what talking watches should aim for every video. Very authentic guest with a collection that reflects him and his life. Great episode!
Uncle Jayesh bringing the stories, Not the usual same rotation, I love this collection, each one has such unique moments in his journey, A watch collection isn’t about the brands and watch boxes, it’s the stories between the links and the people that make the notches on the bezel that matter.
Love it
Great guest watch collector - incredible stories and a wealth of experience to share. Mark, the Hodinkee interviewer, on the other hand didn't feel as engaged in the conversation. He felt fairly removed and disinterested. I have always adored Talking Watches because of the great dynamic and engaging relationship between the interviewer and interviewee (personally my favourite episode was with Jack Forester and Gary Shteyngart). Unforunately, I didn't feel this same sentiment while watching this episode. Yes, one can appreciate the interviewer allowing a guest to speak freely, but interviews should retain some form of structure and intention to keep the audience engaged from beginning to end.
Inclined to agree. He seemed a bit meh about everything. Jay was amazing and I would love to chat watches with him, and sample the food at his restaurant. Nice guy.
Indian Benicio Del Toro! Excellent collection and story. Great content!
Amazing collection, amazing owner and equally amazing stories!
Great, engaging guest. The interviewer just answering ‘ok’ to everything was a bit odd, didn’t really sound excited to hear these great stories
His passion for watches and the stories behind them is truly captivating
Jay’s attitude in life is so refreshing, “I’m still 56, I’ve got some time.”🙏🏽👍🏽💯
Loved this interview, also surprised to learn that the Vogard Timezoner he had there was in fact the predecessor to the current IWC Timezoners! I love how the bezel works
Lore is a fantastic restaurant - highly recommend their dosa; Chef Kumar even came by to check on each guest himself - love to see that he's just as passionate about watches
One of the all time best Talking Watches.
Almost skipped this episode but damn glad I didn’t. Great one!
Love the stories with each watch.
It's the love story for me. One of the best talking watches. This guy sold me on Hublot
Such a cool guy.
I'm going to wear my Memovox to the restaurant for lunch and to say hello.
Really refreshing to see talking watches like this no celebrity stuff real ppl very humble journey of watch collections more more more like this
This is a great video! Authentic and interesting, such diverse watches and with meaning
I had the privilege to be his guest in one of his restaurants in Basel. Delicious food and amazing service. Didn’t know you are into watch Jay. All the best in Brooklyn and I will be visiting your new restaurant next time I am around
A real watch guy! All the Best My Friend from Poland!
Thank you for another amazing video. It is great to watch experts like you put the hard dedication on RUclips for our joy.
Great show, was fantastic hearing his stories associated with the watches.
The first malayali on Hodinkee! Proud moment!
Malayali is on not just the moon, but with Jean Claude Biver.
My bros, we made it lol @@tonythomas2510
Fantastic collection and a very interesting guy.
I love these sessions , getting introduced to so many interesting people that share the same passion as i do that i would never have known of. I will definitely have to have dinner at his restaurant when I’m back in New York.
He seems so down to earth! This was refreshing!
Colourful collection with its own related story
👍
Jay is a pure collector. When I am in Brooklyn next will check out his restaurant.
it's amazing there is a story for each watch he has!
Great episode, love the Vogard story.
Thank you Hodinkee! ❤️
The interviewer keeps staring at him weird. So distracting. 😬 However, I could listen to this guest for hours.
100%! He looks bored and in a food coma 😅🤣
100% agree! @hodinkee can you have a training session with this lad
Just looks a little nervous. Great episode.
Superb all the way around. I feel so lucky to be living in Brooklyn. Can’t wait to try Jay’s food. Like beautifully seasoned curries, each watch tells a special story. Beautiful segment, Hokinkee and Co.
Great interview! Cool guy
Did Mark have somewhere else to be? Great episode despite the disinterested host. Jay is a legend!
I didn't realize that Randy Hickey was doing interviews for Hodinkee
Great guy, great interview. Every piece in his collection tells a story.
Cool dude, thanks for sharing.
thanks for letting the man talk! this was a good one
Amazing collection and style! Gotta put this out there. Love the glasses. What brand is it?
Great story and person. Thank you for sharing it.
Brilliant story Jay - lovely to hear about your watch journey.
Love the guest and stories. Funny how the interviewer is trying to withhold his personal opinion of the collection as not offend but it’s slipping a bit. Jay says the Minerva reminds him of a Patek, he says, “it’s a simple calendar.”
Amazing interview, what the coincidence, visited the same hotel management school in Switzerland 🎉😂
The Rolex GMT Master is gorgeous.
Not really
Jay Master Jay ! Let’s watch n roll and see you soon in NYC … I will bring the Raccelette ;-)
11/10 guest, 4/10 host. Love TW and love Hodinkee, but I just had to say it.
agreed, the interviewer looked bored
Love that JLC 🤌🏽
Great episode.
Excellent beard
Great collector and collection!
Great guest, bad interviewer. He looked bored af.
Jay has a really interesting collection though. Great stories attached to the watches. Would love to see more guests like him.
Cool guy with a cool collection. Great episode.
I was suprised to see Ethan Suplee in a watch discussion.
Great episode, awesome collection 👍
Excellent episode! 👍👍
Amazing episode ❤️
I don't even know who works for Hodinkee anymore it feels like the journalists change so often
This guy's bigger watches are really nice! As the trend seems to be smaller pieces, it's cool to see a collection with bigger watches! Not shying away from size cause the watches fit his lifestyle (to a certain extent) and his wrist.
The Minerva 😍
Finally, something real and genuine from H.
This is a lucky men. Yes cheff 👨🏽🍳
I dig this guy
Didnt get a notification for this episode. Thanks RUclips...
can we have more collectors like this and few more Mayer, Sheeran and Kevin Hart please ?
Its a shame to match up these very interesting watch stories with a dry interviewer. This watch collection have just as much character as the person who owns them… as an interviewer, the least you can do is show some enthusiasm.
Honestly on eo f the best interview episodes you've ever had! Kudos!
Id love a similar superocean ❤❤
Imagine how amazing this video would’ve been if John Mayer interviewed Chef Jay! Hire John Mayer!!!!
Hopefully that ex-husband doesn't ever report that watch stolen or Jay won't get it back if he sends it in for service.
good one
Top class
Great episode , Jay a top man but the amount of Ads a disgrace!!
amazing.
It doesn’t get mentioned often enough, but the production quality and editing of these Hodinkee Talking Watches videos are top notch! You never feel like you’re missing a shot of the watch, the speaker, etc. This is one of the reasons they’re on top of their game!
Love these videos. Down to earth collectors. Watches with storied. I’m kind of tired of celebrities with all watches of the world, I just can’t relate.
The last dish he describes sounds insane! I am always curious about vegan food and it's nice to see it evolve in such an innovative way.
Great guest, but Mark was acting weird
Need more non "celebrities" like him
Annoyed by the amount of times this interviewer references the amount of “wear” on his watches like it’s a bad thing.
don't think he was saying that at all. he was pleased those pricey watches weren't kept in the box. wear your watch.
Liebe Grüsse aus Basel nach Brooklyn.
How nice to have a real person- rather than some uber rich celebrity .
He couldn’t pin the date the JLC was made but tried to sound confident
I get that you guys have leaned into famous people or even just scions of billionaires for the views but these TW with just regular people like this dude or the crane operator from a few years back, that's where it's at. The stories and watches are so much more interesting then 'I just had to have it and called the AD' or even worse 'I needed all three metals for the full set' in sinister bad guy accent.
3:09 why so serious Mark
For me the recipe for Mr. Biver was the highlight of this video. I will copy it (just for home use, don't worry!). The collection of watches was great, too, though. Also because they get worn and each one has its story, like it should be.
correction , i meant less of John Mayer, Sheeran and Kevin Hart , !!!
Back to what made talking watches great…..
I really would like to see tw jason statham
This guy is a mad dog.
Ethan Suplee looking thinner than ever.
🤣
You heard it here first: CODE 11.59 will be “hotter” than Royal Oak in 2030
No I didn’t. I heard it first on Theo and Harris’s comments first. So you are already wrong.
Unbelievable but true😂😂
I hope he wears a hair net and beard net when he is cooking
8 watches not a single box, papers, or bill of sale makes for a strange collection and interview… interviewer looked frustrated by this realization and reached his tipping point during the Daytona story when looking to the camera operator for help.
What do box and papers have to do with anything? Most of them were gifts or bought from friends, etc. Strange comment.
@@notyourdaddy8300 it doesn’t mean everything, but it’s odd to assemble a collection entirely through gifts, and unusual deals, no?
@@gabrielw7929 yeah I suppose it is. I liked that about the collection though. To each their own I guess.
