    Nice to see Yankum supporting the smaller channels as well. I'll back that up by saying why your channel isn't at double the subs at least is beyond me. I long ago became both tired and bored with the manufactured drama, needless spending on esoteric stuff and simply the volume of ever increasing...well... manufactured drama on some of the big guys, I much prefer and seek out your work along with Destination Adventure, etc. Channels like that.

    Looks like a nice piece of kit. However, be sure not to winch while in Park. Your parking pawl is not designed for that and can be a costly transmission break. Better to be inside the running rig, in neutral with feet on brakes.

    Recovery gear is one of those pieces of kit that I spent a bunch of money on and never have to use. The last thing you want when it matters, is a piece of critical kit failing.

    The shiny has definitely worn off of your truck by now. Each scrape and scratch has it's own story to tell, some not so good ( who knew Joshua trees had claws??).
    I have to say, in my personal opinion, Alan runs a first class business. Anyone who lives within the PNW and is considering buying recovery gear can't go wrong with Yankum products. If you don't believe it, feel free to make a trip over to Burley ID and see for yourself. You are always welcome to drop in and say hi during business hours.

    I carry both soft and steel shackles. The soft shackles carry ‘small’ laid out flat in the same old ammo can as my steel. Both have applications, you can’t wrap steel around suspension control arms, you can combine steel and soft to make a smooth bearing surface for reduction pulls. They are all tools, both have advantages.

    Just a note, always face the knot of the soft shackle facing up. Less chance of the loop slipping down off of the knot during a recovery.

    Good demonstration Donald, BUT remember to keep the truck running when you're winching to keep the alternator charging the battery. In tuff pulls you may need to be in the truck to give engine throttle to increase the alternator speed and charging. If not you can kill a battery really fast !

    Hmmm.....nothing like carrying a soft shackle that weighs more than a steel shackle, takes up three times the space of a steel shackle and cost five times more than an steel shackle. Did I mentioned that in "overlanding" situations, a 4.7 ton or larger WLL shackle is indestructible? Other than connecting two straps together or using a shackle pulley ring for synthetic winch line, I'll stick to steel shackles. This new armored unit looks like it it would be a bit of a bear getting into tight spaces.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Месяц назад +7

      Perhaps you didn't actually watch the whole video...I still carry steel shackles as well. Out of curiosity, I just checked and one of my steel shackles weighs about 2 pounds while this sheathed soft shackle is just under one pound, so no, it doesn't weigh more, although yes, it absolutely consumes more space. The thing is, it's a different tool for a different job. As I mentioned in the video, there can be situations where you can't hook up to a dedicated recovery point or may be recovering a vehicle that has no recovery points at all. If you've ever watched channels like Matt's Offroad Recovery or Casey Ladelle, they very regularly have to hook up to odd places on vehicles where you could never attach a steel shackle, so they use soft shackles, often in spots that certainly end up damaging conventional soft shackles...I think that sort of scenario is the idea behind this product. As I mentioned in the video, this product is more likely suited to those who are doing frequent and potentially unconventional recoveries. If it's not for you, you can simply choose not to buy it, but that doesn't mean it's not a legitimate tool for others. 🙂

      @softroadingthewest smart to carry steel and soft shackles, I carry both also, I've been off roading for 40 years, never know what you're going to need until you need it.

    • @georgecarousos6735
      @georgecarousos6735 Месяц назад

      I use both soft and steel shackles. Yes I watched your entire video and find both Casey and Matt's channels very entertaining. But if trying to help winch a car like a Subaru Outback or Honda Pilot, these are unibody cars with tons of plastic cladding around the "bumper" area. Can you try to pull from a cast aluminum A-arm?....yes but another option is to use the DOT tie down holes the EVERY car sold in the USA must have. You an buy a pair of grab, R, T and mini J hook clusters for under $50.00. By using a pair you can bridle them together. I'm also a big fan of carrying a 10' long grade 70 chain with a grab hook on one end and a slip hook with a latch on the other. So for the cost of two of these armored shackles, you can buy two standard soft shackles, two steel shackles, a 10' section of grade 70 chain with hooks and a pair of the DOT attaching clusters and have money left over. If a vehicle does not have easily accessible recovery hooks, other than the A-arm where would you suggest to connect the armored shackle? Most aftermarket bumper manufacturers won't honor the warranty if you damage the bumper by pulling from a non approved tow point. I understand your point of using the armored shackle but the applications are very limited compared to the options I listed above....all for less money.
