    As a retired bicyclist turned inspired back-roads explorer.... In my younger days, I bicycled the entirety of the Oregon Coast, twice. I highly recommend exploring the paths cars cannot go... Great video, as always. Thank you.

    Thanks for taking us on your adventure. We were at the Oregon coast recently too. No matter the weather there's always something to do. I recommend making fish tacos with your catch! When I'm not making them at home I head to Fisherman's Market for fish tacos. Soooo good! The ending of your video cracked me up. That dog bringing you your change. Brilliant! Reminded me of a dog I met over 45 years ago in a pet store who could talk. He said "Hello", "I love you Ralph" (the owner's name) and "I'm hungry!" I was told he could say more but the dog didn't get his way (for getting food) so he decided to take a nap. Years later when I drove through that town again I stopped at the pet store to see if that dog was still around but sadly he had passed away.

    Wonderful trip! One "little" caveat ... as an old Oregonian, I'd suggest starting and finishing with Safety. Every place changes with every change the ebb and flow of each & every wave. Every year we lose a few people who were expecting to come home at the end of a perfect day. GREAT coverage of the tracks of History that people walk past and never understand without some gentle help. Well done!

    On my annual pilgrimage back home to Maine this summer we visited a lighthouse museum in Rockland, ME. It was very interesting. One of the things I learned was Maine used to have lighthouse ships anchored in different channels along the coast of Maine. They would stay anchored in the channels with crews on board to maintain the light to mark the channels.

    We just got home from a six day camping trip in southern Big Sur. HWY 1 has been closed down there due to landslides for several years. With the HWY closed it is like going back in time. Quiet. No traffic on the road. Going to the beach and being the only people on the beach. Another trip at the end of October. Before it is gone.

      When I was standing there waiting to pay with my $20 in my hand, the dog was next to me, occasionally emitting a short bark. The shopkeeper told me to hand the dog my twenty and said that's why he was barking. I wasn't ready for that so I didn't get to film it, but the dog took my twenty and walked around behind the counter to the cash register and gave him my twenty. You saw the rest, LOL.

      Honestly I’m not sure, I’ve not been to the top of that hill. It’s possible there is an exposed rocky area where trees have been unable to take root, the entire coastline is quite rocky. I’m not much of a hiker but that hill is pretty close to my dad’s house so maybe one day I’ll work up the motivation to make the climb. 😄 Thanks for watching!

    I love the Oregon coast and have been there several times over the years. I went into one of the beach caves, I can't remember which one, and I ran into a very large and vocal female sea lion. She was not very happy with my presence. After a few pics, I let her be and moved on. Sampling the food along the coast is a favorite, and I always stop in Depoe Bay for salt water taffy. The dunes are so fun and we love to do a sand rail tour or rent some atv's.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  3 месяца назад +1

      I think the general consensus is anything older than 50 years old should be considered an artifact and left alone as part of the heritage of a place. In my early early days of backcountry exploring, I once found a _very_ old tin can and took it with me, learning later about the practice of leaving artifacts in place. I still have that can and my hope is to one day return to the location - I know exactly where I found it - and carefully return it to its resting spot. It absolutely was litter, originally. But now it tells the part of the story of that place, along an old decommissioned rail line. 🙂

    • @live2av8

      Only if you bring self-tanning lotion, an umbrella, and a dry-suit.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  3 месяца назад +2

      @@live2av8 LOL indeed.
      Brandt, the Pacific Ocean along Oregon is generally too cold for casual swimming, with dangerous currents in most places, and we have great white sharks out there too. 😆 In summer when the water is slightly warmer, the days are often chilly and foggy. We do get more sunny days on the coast later in autumn when inland temperatures drop, but then it's not all that warm on the beach either and not very effective sunbathing with the sun relatively low in the sky. People do surf, but you generally need a wetsuit, and most surfing occurs in protected coves and other spots that are known to have fewer rip currents. I pretty much always wade in the ocean when I'm at the beach, but I go no deeper than my knees...in fact, in my decades of multiple coast trips per year, I have never once taken my feet off the bottom or fully immersed myself in that icy water (though I do very much enjoy swimming in the ocean in Hawaii or the Mediterranean). It's just not what people go to the Oregon coast for. 😄
