      Played overwatch for 8yrs even streaming the game but after 8yrs i have realised blizzard don't know how to balance the game and they won't fix the garbage match maker that drags decent players down the match maker is the most rigged system i have ever seen.

      Nah I’ll just go brig and my back line is safe, it’s widow I’m locking cuz in 5v5 it’s just no viable to waste a whole person to harass her when she can take one to two ppl EASILY by the time that happens.

      It's funny that when bans are a topic , everybody just thinks about banning a DPS hero. I think about banning a hero like Mercy or a shield tank instead. DPS is the weakest in this game.

      @@chrisb5000 I think if I was playing tank I would want to ban ana the most, she is super annoying when playing tank, but widow is the most un fun hero to play against, and on her maps she holds the game hostage so I would probably choose her, and on none sniper maps I would choose sombra, I’m good at killing mercy she doesn’t bother me, and tanks they are all so op it doesn’t matter what tank gets banned 😂

    Siege has been doing hero bans in comp for years, but I'm guessing Blizzard won't do it because so many players have their identity ingrained with the hero they main.

      There will always be players queuing support bruh. Highly unlikely to get all 6 dps players at this point. Open q is the better option

      @@luminen4051 They did confirm they will test 6v6 next season or so and there was a whole cast barring the OW2 healers before role queue was added so there was already a decent amount of choices.

    I'd like to see something in between Role Lock and Open Queue. If they could guarantee me 1 player on each role I would be happier. Hell I think in 6v6 if it was 1 Tank, 1 DPS, 2 Supports and then 2 Flex players that could play any role at any time that would be interesting. I think Hero Bans and Protects at Diamond and above would still work with this system as well.

      That actually sounds pretty solid, make you have to select at least one of each role to start. I will always have nightmares of playing open q and every game had at least 3 dps. Then again that is because of the fact dps just has more heroes.

      Dude I been saying the same thing to my friends. Having one or two players on the team that were queued for flex would be awesome. Tanks would maybe need a debuff for flex slot though? Idk

    You know what would be a cool feature? For those who queue all role, during the match, if two players agree to switch, they should be able to, only when both are in spawn, obviously

      problem with that is if lets say you're a gold tank but a diamond dps, everytime you flexed into tank you'd just get a dps to swap with you to get a free win. you could come up with a buncha stipulations to prevent that situation from happening but people will always find a way around that. just reverting to open queue or switching to a role limit system would be easier and accomplish the same thing

    Open queue in overwatch 1 was garbage because of 2 things, lack of characters in other roles and the devs forgetting to give characters exploitable weaknesses. If the devs realized that they need to actually make fun characters for tanks and supports open queue would’ve been fine.

    genuinely have no idea why so many people hate open q, especially when they give no explanation and just say "oh its horrible so bad role better"
    open lets you and your team be as flexible in their response to the enemy as possible, but its still up to you to capitalize on it. role... lock? just restricts players more and as someone who advocates for player agency im surprised sam prefers role

    I think 6v6 would make role lock feel much better. As was stated briefy in this video, I think the biggest reason as to why open queue felt so good in MR was because the hero designs aren't as restrictive as in OW. The example I always go to is Storm, having this supp-like utilitly with the aura/amp but still feeling like a strong dps option. IMO role lock might still be better for OW in a 6v6 format because the game still is a FPS and while abilities make the game, the FPS mechanics are still very important whereas MR feels way more about how you combo your abilties rather than heavy shooting mechanics.

    > (role queue might be fine, but to assuage queue times) go open queue with a limit on selecting max 2 tanks max 2 supports, and have the matchmaker match based on hero timed played, hero level, and maybe even add a feature where players can list their 10 favorite heroes to play, and try to avoid matching people with the same top 3-5 heroes in their pools so you don’t get a team of Mercy mains for example. I really think this would work especially with the teamplay features. A lot of casuals only like certain heroes and don’t want to specialize in a role, this also adds competitive depth/creativity and brings back flex players as a concept)
    > Add tons of teamplay features such as clans/guilds, LFG, forced match chat in competitive, don’t punish casual friends for stacking in QP with more severe matchmaking, community tournaments, etc.
    > OW is biggest game in the world
    This insta solves queue times since it’d open queue. Yet, it prevents cheese comps like quad tank, triple tank, GOATS, but allows for some experimentation such as running a 3rd DPS as Sombra for healthpack access and added utility, solo tank ball, etc. The only issue is social issues assuaged by matching off of hero time/levels/selection. As mentioned earlier, but also solved via teamplay features. You should be playing with friends or agreeable people most of the time. If your DPS are doing bad, you always have the option to swap to that role, and I think nobody would be upset by both tank slots and supports slots filling up and being “forced” to play DPS. Additionally, in practice tank/support has always been better than DPS- tanks are just closer quarters DPS with far more survivability and supports are just DPS that can also heal so they essentially have twice the options to get value. With this format, you could lean into the fact that tanks/supports are better but it will never break the game since you can only pick 2 of each. Also, you can have DPS be premiere at dealing their damage type as they used to be, and way more specialized so they can have strong focused dmg again (kill on old breakpoints) as opposed to this vague moderate damage it seems like every hero is becoming now.
    Finally, I think people sleep on the fact that we not only have far more options in tank/support, but far more alluring ones too. If you want to be more damage focused in your playstyle you now have Doomfist, Junkerqueen, and Mauga on tank and Kiriko, Illari, and Juno on support. I think the big reason people didn’t fill is if you’re not a tank specialist you’re not gonna play Rein or Monkey, then Zarya is contingent on you enjoying and knowing how to build charge and Dva is a peel hero, so really a dmg/shooter focused player may only want to play Hog in OG OW. For support you’d either have to be a glass cannon on Zen, learn movement tech to be a dmg threat on Lucio, or a pacifist on Mercy. There are now so many ways to enjoy the other roles besides DPS in 6v6 open queue (role limit).
    The last thing I want to mention is specialist heroes- builder characters (Torb/Sym), a hero that literally becomes a turret for defensive purposes (Bastion), a hacker that is about assist utility (Sombra), a brawl sculptor (Mei), all can have a more reasonable place in the game as specialist or utility picks, rather than needing to compete for 2 DPS slots as a duelist archetype in 5v5. It’s why Torb is just Reaper with a turret now or Reaper is just Torb with teleporting. I think people miss how unique heroes were. Another example is ball being a disruptor hero and not needing to frontline like they seem to think he has to do in 5v5.
    All these changes I think would leave the game in a perfect format. The only other thing would be balancing it reasonably. They just need to not let characters break the skill to reward curve. If it’s an easy hero for noobs to learn the game, it should actually just be bad at high levels except in its niche. If things are niche that’s good because then they have their spot in the game but don’t take over the game (ex. Moira should become underwhelming in like diamond but can still be used high up for deathball healing purposes). Let’s hope they try something like this because I really think we can have a format that strikes a balance that gets the most benefits from all alternatives.
    Oh, and all this with the bans the original creator suggests in his video.

    If I could ban heroes in Ow1, I would have banned Hanzo/Widow 99% of the time. I rather play vs a brig that I feel is in the fight, than some spectator that is spamming 1 shots until its a 5v6.
    But its like Valorant where they have to have these 1 shot heroes/weapons, to get some of the CS:GO awp players.

    I am willing to accept going back to 6v6 is right. I am willing to accept bans is right. But I remember open que Overwatch and refuse to return to it. Even if the majority of players find it to be a better mode I will never play Overwatch again if open que returns as the main format.
    Edit: And I will say open que Overwatch was great before meta's were figured out and starting to form. So when you say MR's open que format was fun I see this as "I am still in the honey moon phase."

    I hate playing 5v5 but my worst memories of ow1 was from open queue. I was gold back then so my lobbies consisted of 1 to 2 tanks and the rest were dps. I would normally be the sole support on the team and only hear “I need healing!” Or “our support sucks” so many times. When everyone was doing their own thing and I was the only person who could heal 5. I know the stat sheet has stopped a lot of that toxic talk. But if I ever wanted to play dps or a certain tank I couldn’t because we would have one to no heals. It was fun because the game was new to me. But I really fell in love with the game when 2/2/2 was a thing.
    Also the cat picking was only one week. I get the annoyance, but they were trying to change things up and be entertaining. Complain more about the balance of they would have to ban the same like 2 to 4 hero’s every other week.

      Yep Open queue was shit, but thats maily because the tank role was small with not many interesting characters. The tanks didnt add anything cool except for ball who was very niche and different to play. And they didnt make characters that actually fit the tank role for the type of game it is. Even now they are making rpg stats characters and not actual action based stated characters for tanks. People who hold threat and eat damage for as long as possible is what they are making, when in reality it should be characters who put pressure and either hold space or takes space with mechanics that do damage or deny damage while minimizing the damage you take.

    I don't think bans should be in any hero shooters especially the ones that focus more on the abilites/identities of the heroes over the shooter part , because by adding that all high ranked OTPs absoulotly get cucked , thus decreasing the already niche hero's playtime and making the hero's mains quit the game , but as a doom/hanzo otp , OTPs are also really fucking annoying so who by am I to say .

      When you talk about 'high ranked OTPs' you have people like ZBRA and Chazm in mind while not thinking about the millions upon millions of mercy one tricks that plague the game in diamond and below. Getting rid of OTPs would be waaayyyyy healthier for the game and force even those high elo OTPs to learn something different

      I've been saying this for years. OW (which is an FPS game) should focus on the FPS shooting first everything else second. Overwatch focusing on making supports and tanks OP and DPS heroes irrelevant is what killed the game and it's ridiculous that hardly anybody notices this.

    It's crazy to me that people still don't get it. Overwatch died or started dying once the focus shifted away from their largest player base. The largest player base has always been the FPS crowd/DPS players. How can you not cater to your largest group of players? When the goats thing happened and to the current day, is when the DPS players (OW largest player base) started leaving to games like fortnite, Apex, valorant, etc. Those games only became as big as they did because overwatch dropped the ball and stopped catering to what most players wanted. Again when I say most players, I'm talking about fps/dps players. IMO, catering so much to support and tanks to keep them happy was a huge mistake because they were not the larger player bases , And is what killed overwatch and has made overwatch a laughing stock among FPS conversations. And having that reputation is why the game can never make a proper comeback. It just boggles the mind how a game company can ignore their moneymaker and focus on a smaller crowd of players to keep happy instead. Making a class overpowered because no one wants to play it is nonsense. If no one wants to play it shouldn't the focus be on the class that people want to play? And maybe move away from the others?
    The only way I can ever see Overwatch ever becoming relevant again amongst the FPS crowd is for Overwatch to release a spin-off game, called Overwatch arena or whatever that focuses just on shooting or the DPS heroes. Again to cater to the FPS crowd , which is the group that made all the other FPS games so popular like I mentioned (fortnite, Apex, Valorant, etc). because most of the people that play those games and made those games popular were once overwatch players as well.
    Even the Overwatch League died when all the top DPS players left (during goats) to go focus on valorant or fortnite or Apex or whatever. These DPS players were the stars of the league and once they were gone or they were benched during goats, everything just died, as tanks and support play is boring to play AND to watch. How can the developers and people not get this? It's just crazy to me.
    Imagine a restaurant limiting their most popular dishes that that sell the most and instead focus on niche food that only a few customers enjoy and then wonder why they have lost so many customers. It's just ridiculous nonsense.

      See I agree that they always seem to take DPS for granted and made it as unfun as possible to try to balance out queues… but I think tank/support are fun. Both roles have a ton of DPS appealing heroes now. Also, I think support is the big money maker because DPS players mostly just want to play with the mechanics and improve, while many support players like playing dress up. What they needed to do was just add more tanks/supports that appeal to FPS players and make DPS an actual impactful role in the game. Also just generally rewarding skill whether that’s landing consecutive headshots or timing your Winston dive. Everything now seems to want to undo skill or prevent plays, and no regular FPS player is going to pick this game over another with that crap in it.

    I don't think it's fair to say that role lock 6v6 was a mistake. Mainly because it was never given a fair shot at working, most of its life span it was abandoned in the double shield meta, so obviously it felt like shit to play hence why queue times were really long. I'd like to see role lock 6v6 given a fair chance with a better balance team, and actual live service.

    I liked open queue. I was a flex player. We all were when it first came out. If your team chose 2 tanks and 3 DPS you had to bring it with support. If they chose 3 DPS and 2 heals you have to bring it with tank

    Open Queue simply doesn't work for the general playerbase. Early days of OW1 proved this, even before Brig was released. Matches lacked any form of consistency for the general audience and the game was substantially better once Role Lock came. Of course, you lose some depth at the highest level of play, but the consistency for ALL levels of play is an easy trade-off. Also, Bans and Protects will never work in OW outside of OWCS. You'll never agree with your random yeammates in Competitive. You coule let every player ban one hero, but OW does not have the hero diversity for 5-6 bans. Note that I think it could be cool to have rotating rulesets for OWCS, alternating between Role Lock and Open Queue.

      It does work just not for Ovewatch because they make Tank characters and healers with rpg philosophy instead of action based philosophy.
      Tanks in overwatch are made to be a big target(similar to threat mechanic so that everyone shoots at the easy target)and eat damage and do damage or block/reduce with abilities, passive abilities or stats or damage while doing so. With that you have a super unbalanced mess which makes counterswaping worse when only 1 of that role is present. So open queue would be more beneficial in 5v5 if they put a role limit. Kind of like they did with hero limits but for roles. Max of 2 tanks 3 dps and 2 supports. Comps variations of 122 or 212 or 221 or 230 or 032 or 131 can be played
      Tanks should be designed to put pressure by doing damage or denying damage while minimizing the damage they take with mechanics by using abilities, and bonuses from passives and or the map. It may sound similar but just like a programing code, the way that is is worded can change a function entirely from its intended design.

    The real problem of role lock is that it let them get away with globally balancing roles inequally, dumpstering dps and pumping supports with press F to win free value mechanics.

    I’ve pretty much came to the same conclusion. I think open queue is a solution (with heavy rebalance). A hero should either have high sustain or damage, not both. Also get rid of the magic armor formulas and just customize armor pen per hero. They tried a straight percentage, they tried OW1 armor formula. There are always winners and losers and unintended interactions with those. Just give each hero a custom damage value against armor so it can be fine tuned properly. Remove immortality. If they really want to prevent goats, try having a team resource limit (max team hp).

      Of course open q is garbage, the game isn't balanced for it. That's equivalent to complaining the car is not a good plane, it takes too much to fly off, goes a very short distance and the landing is always rough.

      The game has been balanced for role q for years and everything has been built with that in mind.
      Shifting focus to balancing for open que would take MASSIVE amount of work not even comparable to switch between 5v5 and 6v6. They are barely able to do anything right with 5v5 so there is zero hope for such a massive change that is liked by small fraction of players

      @@sleepymoose453 You're just doubling the work if you go for 6v6 then eventually do open q. You save time by going to 6v6 and open q at the same time. It is not harder to switch to open q than 6v6. The work required has major overlaps.

      Open queue is better. The problem with OW is the players. It would be better for me to say unless you are in the highest tiers of play the problem is going to be more on the players than it is the balancing especially since most players can't even recognize what is actually happening in the game and refuse to take accountability on what they are doing and could do. Before u decide to bash my opinion, ask yourself this; if more players sat back and reflected on their own gameplay the quality of matches would go up. Improving individual skill, team skill, and mindset.

    HARD FUCKING disagree on the final point. A stable ranked environment is WAYYYYY more important, the only reason it got out of hand was because of the shitty balance team. Any player in the metal ranks will tell you that early OW1 was a fucking disgrace, I don’t WANT to play with no tanks or supports because no one on the team wants to play their off role, and anyone telling you that “your opinion doesn’t matter” is brainless. Open queue is trash and I will fight anyone on that hill.

    Hero bans would be the final nail in the coffin for a game. Imagine going into a game wanting to play a character, then the other team ban it and you have to play a match for 10 mins NOT playing what you loaded up the game to play. Why would anyone waste your time doing that

      Learn another character
      Hero bans really will only affect broken characters or characters that will run through your team comp
      Example if Genji is broken and gets banned just play a characterswith a similar gameplay like Tracer
      Only real issue would be like a top 500 ball player being recognized and getting ball banned, which would still not happen because of streamer mode

      yeah while hero bans may legitimately be the solution for tournament play I don't think it would fit the pug nature of queued games and should only be reserved for the highest mmr, like masters or higher. For casuals hero bans would probably do more harm than help

    His argument for open queue just makes no sense, isn't thor just a road hog without a hook? A damage focused tank, literally the same thing and current hog would be completely fine in 6v6, that has nothing to do with role queue, the marvel rivals beta felt like absoulte garbage already with 5 damage heroes on my team, they will lose their whole player base in like 3 months without role queue because teams will lose on the spawn room just like in ow. Not playing what you want and are good at is a 100% flawed design outside of pro play or closed teams.

    One plat game in rivals I was vanguard playing with 5 randoms and we got rolled first match didn’t get 1% on point. Then I texted in chat “everyone switch rolls rn” not one person played tank vanguard or dps the same role they played last time (I was on dps that round) and we ended up 2-1 them

    Hero bans while yes they have a place. I also think it could make a lot of OTP's just straight up quit. Which many I'm sure would be happy about it. Until your main get's perma banned of course. I'd still like to see a hero ban season in OW as it would at least let people see how it would feel in practice.

    Role queue isn’t a bad solution it was just lazy. Role queue is fine and even good it does eliminate the 4dps scenario he referenced but it also eliminated a lot of creativity in comps. regardless it’s infinitely better than what’s in overwatch now.

    Hero bans, the draft system, is why I dont play most mobas. Being able to pick any hero and change my hero is one of the many things that made Overwatch better than all the other mobas in existence.
    If you want a compromise, a role minimum that locks after heroes are picked like 1-1-1 minimum. This makes 3-3 comps impossible, as well as 5 damage 1 tank/support impossible.
    If you introduce bans/draft into comp or qp, you will drive away more players. You seriously want anyone below GM to have to make these ban choices? You know what you will see, heroes being banned almost every game, and some heroes being banned that aren't unbalanced, but act as skill checks for the game. Then you will see Blizzard award nerfs and buffs based on these ban numbers, against pick rates. This is why we shit on Freedo, because his idea will destroy the game. You will see Genji nerfed even more, Rein nerfed, and Sombra nerfed. You won't see heroes who need balanced be balanced. And another thing, whats gonna happen when people disagree on who gets banned? You really think Overwatch players will handle that conflict maturely? Yes, make the game even more toxic.
    Open queue was superior, the problem was balance, always has been. I prefer 6v6 open queue, even when it was broken.
