Thanks for taking the time to post this. As a professional mechanic, I guessed at the stoplight switch first. After watching your video, I bent the micro switch and all is good. I tried to buy the switch from Nissan but it apparently comes with the gearshift. I wasn't going to pay $500 for a $2 micro switch. Thanks again! By the way, it's called the park position switch.
Thanks so much for posting this video. This was also our problem on a 2008 Pathfinder. I was able to bend the metal piece correctly without removing the full console by using a pair of 12 inch needle nose pliers and reaching across from the opposite side after removing the two top pieces of the console. So small pry bar to remove console pieced and 12 inch needle nose pliers is all that is needed.
Thanks for posting this, I knew something was wrong when i stopped hearing the clicking sound. You saved me from replacing the solenoid with your trick. It works just fine now.

@@jiki1356 Try turning the key all the way but don't start the car. Wait for all the bells and lights to stop, then tap the brake a few times. It should click when you hit the brakes, but it's kind of quiet.
@@jiki1356 not sure. It sounds like the solenoid isn't firing. Could be a bad solenoid, or could be like mine and the metal tab just isn't tripping the switch when you're in park.

Had the same issue with my daughter's 2012 Pathfinder. Was going to order the solenoid, but tried bending the metal tab first and it solved the problem. Her rear camera did not work and starting working again after the repair.
I owe you a beer. After watching your video, I accessed the area of the solenoid on my 2004 Pathfinder and put the shifter in Park. The solenoid did not operate when I depressed the brake pedal. Without removing the solenoid, I slipped a thin screwdriver behind the metal tab and push it forward slightly. The solenoid immediately began operating again when I depressed the brake pedal. I then removed the solenoid, carefully bent the metal tab back slightly with needle-nose pliers, put it all together and viola! A working interlock.
great video...dealt with this problem for several months. turned out to be that little metal tab that controls the switch, just bent it a bit like you showed and works good as new! saved me several hundred dollars that the dealer wanted... thanks again!!!
Thanks for the post. I have just removed the trim covering the stick and could spot the tiny metal tab of the position switch . It is deep inside assymbey then i have Inserted a plastic chopstick and bent the myal tab a little outward and it wirks great without removing any screw. Indpired by you. Blessed

Thanks, saved me a tear down. I was able to lift up the side cover enough to see the micro switch tab and bend it with a long screw driver. It took less than 2 minutes, just make sure the shifter is back in N or past so there is room for the tab to bend.
After reading your reply, I went and tried the same thing on my 2010 Pathy and broke the micro switch altogether. I had to take the whole thing apart and superglue the micro switch back together only after searching and locating the tiny red button that activates it and spending over an hour trying to settle it back in its saddle. It had fallen down underneath the gear mechanism. Nevertheless, the older the car, the more brittle that micro switch becomes.
this was exactly the fix I needed...thank you for the good video. fyi if you use a short phillips head you won't have to take all of the console apart. EXCELLENT VIDEO
Very helpful! I've now had to bend the clip twice in 6 months and will have to probably order the black micro switch with clip @ 10:02 but have no idea which part it is. The metal clip is getting soft from bending and will eventually break.

Thanks for making this video! My girlfriend's 2008 is doing the same thing. My personal solution to the problem is to buy something American, but she doesn't find that as funny as I do. Hopefully I can get it fixed this weekend. Until then, she has to carry around a pencil to use the bypass button to shift.

I wonder how this assembly compares to the one on my '13 Sentra. My shift is stuck and I can't find any material demonstrating a repair or replacement. I'm guessing most shops would replace the whole solenoid assembly instead of just the solenoid itself so that why I might not have worked by simply getting a new solenoid. Great vid. Thanks.
NomaderWhat I was just outside looking at the interior to see where I should start in removing the center console but the Sentra SV has so much I didn't know where to start, what order to go in or anything. I bet I have an easy fix under there but I think I'll let carmax fix it. My shit should still be under warranty.

My '06 has intermittent starting issues. When she doesn't start, I can slap the gear shift forward and that fixes it most of the time. Interestingly, I don't have any issues shifting from park even when the engine isn't cranked (but ACC is on). That whole assembly is $500+ new... any advice on what to take a look at? Was that piece of metal the Park Position Switch?
The metal was part of the release switch, but I don't think it's the same as the park position switch. I think it's a different switch that let's you start in park or neutral.
very good video I have saved hundred dollar because the whole shift cost almos $500.00 and the selenoide usualy work good , I heve adjust the the little piece of metal two time in two years and work but now my problem is inside of knob, the blue plastic that push the pole shift to down is missing o was broken.
Thanks for your video. I have a different but related problem. I did not try to adjust the metal tab, but the entire metal piece came off of the switch when I was trying to reinstall the assembly. What should I do to replace this or should I? I figured out that this switch obviously tells the car that it's OK to start and that the gear is in park. Do you know if I can safely just make it to where the switch is depressed all the time? Appreciate the comments.
Man that sucks. I assume that when the tab came off it was lost. (?) I think if you find it you can still put it back on if it's not broken. It looks like there are just a couple of plastic pegs holding it on. You're right about the button. I think you might be able to use tape or something to hold down the little button if you're in a bind, but then you will be able to shift out of park without your foot on the brake, so be extra careful. Replacing the assembly or at least that tab is probably your safest bet. I'd try to hit up a junk yard and see if you can pull what you need off an old car and save yourself some $$.
No. The metal tab had flattened out enough over time that when the shifter was in park it wouldn't depress a little button. If the button doesn't push in, the actuator that fires when you push the brake to allow you to shift from park will not activate. I just bent the tab enough so it depresses the button, but only when the shifter is in park. Kind of a long winded answer, but this trick is more like adding a shim on the button and not a bypass. You still have to have the key turned on.
@@bradw3053 if you tried replacing the solenoid and still doesn't work, I'd think maybe a bad switch under the brake pedal or maybe a blown fuse. Not sure if that linkage is on a fuse. Possibly a wire that was cut or worm through somewhere along the line would do it too.
@@NomaderWhat64 So I see the 2 switches on the bracket above the brake that open when you press the brake away. There is also above the brake a square brass threaded rod with a white stand off. The stand off moves an 1/8". Without looking for a the wire yet. Which fuse would it be? Called what? Would it be an actual fuse or one of the block style? I've used a tweeker pushing the release button for 5 or 6 years so I don't mind doing this. But since I bought and changed the solenoid I figured why not solve the problem. Thanks again.
@@Rex-nl5qq started messing around with the brake pedal. The bottom switch activates the brake lights and solenoid. The threaded rod pushes the brake hydraulic cylinder. I can't tell what the top switch off the 2 does. If your brake lights work I'd assume your switch and fuse are good. I don't know if the a solenoid and the brakes are on sperate fuses. I wouldn't think so. I don't have a writing diagram to know for sure. I'm kind of at a loss.
hi. is there a way you can read off the part number written on the switch? if it's not visible from the front, it will be listed on the other side. is it Omron SS-01?
just to clarify, i am not referring to the solenoid but the switch that had the metal lever that depresses the switch and engages the solenoid and get the gear out of park.

Where did you find the whole switch? I think I need the solenoid as well. Dealership wants $600.00 I've already used your method once in the past. Don't think I can twist that thin metal again.
I never found the switch by itself. I think it was around $60 when we bought it. The only way I found the little switch was by buying the entire shifter assembly. I think it was like $200-$300 for the whole sufferer assembly. Never found the little switch by itself.
What model was your pathfinder? I have a 2010 4x4 SE. I broke the shift knob and cannot find a replacement. You have the same shift knob. I think they trimmed out my interior using a custom request for a V8 4 x4 model.
I have a 2006 pathfinder with the vq40de. I assume the 2006 and 2012 have the same transmission. Is there any way I am able to have the + and - manual mode on mine? Thanks in advance
Mine is a 2008. Put it in drive then push the shifter to the left and you're in "manual" mode. Id imagine a 2006 had the same option, but I'm not sure.
So, I did this, and it worked great. But the issue came back, and when I tried it again, it got worse. I'm wondering if the metal tab is just done. Do you think replacing the solenoid would work? Where do I find that part? I've been looking around without much luck. Thanks!

There's a tiny red button under it that the metal tab pushes down. I wasn't able to find a part for that except replacing the whole shifter assembly. That's pretty pricey.
My g37 (nissan made) is stuck in park after being in an accident. Could this solenoid still be the problem? What else could cause the car not to go into gear? It has 55k miles by the way
It could be the solenoid or the tab at the bottom like I show, or it could be something else. I'm not a mechanic, I'm just an amateur wrench. You could try replacing the solenoid, but if it's been in an accident you probably should take it to a shop. Sorry if that's not much help.
NomaderWhat I haven't seen the car yet, took the gamble and bought it at an online auction. I'm hoping I can get it into gear with the shift lock mechanism so I know it's not a bigger problem. Will be figuring out by Wednesday
The metal tab wasn't puchingthe little button so the solenoid would not unlock the shifter. If you press the brake and don't hear a click that might be the problem.
Had a similar problem a few months ago. The shift cable had come off the shifter. In my case the plastic bushing holding the end of the shift cable disintegrated. I got a new one online. Pain in the butt snapping the new bushing in, but it did the trick. For an emergency fix I pulled the trim off, hooked the end of the shift cable on the post on the right side of the shifter, and held it in there with a bent paper clip I think. It was a really sketchy fix, but it got me home. If you're cable is still attached in the cab, check the other end under the hood where it connects to the transmission. . Hopefully that helps.
I have a 2012 Nissan maxima and the same thing happen. My problem though turned out to be a fuse. I was doing a wiring project and apparently burned the fuse for the brake lights. I ended up replacing that fuse to fix the brake light issue and then all of a sudden I could shift my car again. Apparently there seems to be a low-voltage wire that gets power when you press the brake pedal. So when the fuse blew no power was getting there. Try this first
Just watch the video in the problem. I'm having is when I connect the plug into the selector shifter lock it pops a fuse and I still can't get it to shift. What do you think? No.
that's a little beyond my expertise, but it sounds like your shift cable either broke or somehow came off the shifter. If you go to about 7:45 in the video you'll see a yellow cable going toward the front of the car. There should be a ring on the end that is attached to the shifter. If that's attached and everything still moves, it could be where the cable connects to the transmission. I can't help much with that end. I'd recommend getting a Haynes manual for better instructions if you're a DIY'er, or calling a mechanic.
I was going for the quick access fix suggested by Marc baculy but I seemed to have knocked the metal piece out of position. Now I've torn the whole thing apart and I can't find that metal piece! Anyone have this issue? I'm sort of surprised I can find it...
Finally was able to fish the clip out using a coat hanger and blindly sweeping in the little recess under the shifter mechanism. Couldn't see it but knew it had to be down there. Eventually it swept out and I made the fix as described. Seems to be working so far - thanks!
Hello. Thanks for your information. It was very helpful. Mine is not stuck perminent.. the shift release button on the gear shift does not fully depress some times. I have to wiggle with it to get it to fully depress than it moves out of park. And I do not remember hearing the clutching sound if the solanoid ever. Is my problem similar to need the same fix. Chian-Tilung Abraham That's how it started for me. It would not work the first few times, but I eventually could shift out of park. It got to where it would never work and i had to push the release with a screwdriver. The switch could be your problem.

Here's a question does that trick you've done bypass the locking system? Where now even with the key out you are able to shift the car into gear?
No. The metal tab had flattened out enough over time that when the shifter was in park it wouldn't depress a little button. If the button doesn't push in, the actuator that fires when you push the brake to allow you to shift from park will not activate. I just bent the tab enough so it depresses the button, but only when the shifter is in park. Kind of a long winded answer, but this trick is more like adding a shim on the button and not a bypass. You still have to have the key turned on.

@@bradw3053 if you tried replacing the solenoid and still doesn't work, I'd think maybe a bad switch under the brake pedal or maybe a blown fuse. Not sure if that linkage is on a fuse. Possibly a wire that was cut or worm through somewhere along the line would do it too.
@@NomaderWhat64 So I see the 2 switches on the bracket above the brake that open when you press the brake away. There is also above the brake a square brass threaded rod with a white stand off. The stand off moves an 1/8". Without looking for a the wire yet. Which fuse would it be? Called what? Would it be an actual fuse or one of the block style? I've used a tweeker pushing the release button for 5 or 6 years so I don't mind doing this. But since I bought and changed the solenoid I figured why not solve the problem. Thanks again.
@@Rex-nl5qq started messing around with the brake pedal. The bottom switch activates the brake lights and solenoid. The threaded rod pushes the brake hydraulic cylinder. I can't tell what the top switch off the 2 does.
If your brake lights work I'd assume your switch and fuse are good. I don't know if the a solenoid and the brakes are on sperate fuses. I wouldn't think so. I don't have a writing diagram to know for sure.

hi. is there a way you can read off the part number written on the switch? if it's not visible from the front, it will be listed on the other side. is it Omron SS-01?
just to clarify, i am not referring to the solenoid but the switch that had the metal lever that depresses the switch and engages the solenoid and get the gear out of park.

What does it mean when you push the button and it works but you can't go back into park unless you push button again
That may be how they designed it. My wife said she's always had to push the button to get back in park. Not sure.

Where did you find the whole switch? I think I need the solenoid as well. Dealership wants $600.00 I've already used your method once in the past. Don't think I can twist that thin metal again.

The only way I found the little switch was by buying the entire shifter assembly. I think it was like $200-$300 for the whole sufferer assembly. Never found the little switch by itself.
What model was your pathfinder? I have a 2010 4x4 SE. I broke the shift knob and cannot find a replacement. You have the same shift knob. I think they trimmed out my interior using a custom request for a V8 4 x4 model.
Mine is a 2008 with a V6.

I have a 2006 pathfinder with the vq40de. I assume the 2006 and 2012 have the same transmission. Is there any way I am able to have the + and - manual mode on mine? Thanks in advance
Mine is a 2008. Put it in drive then push the shifter to the left and you're in "manual" mode. Id imagine a 2006 had the same option, but I'm not sure.
So, I did this, and it worked great. But the issue came back, and when I tried it again, it got worse. I'm wondering if the metal tab is just done. Do you think replacing the solenoid would work? Where do I find that part? I've been looking around without much luck. Thanks!

There's a tiny red button under it that the metal tab pushes down. I wasn't able to find a part for that except replacing the whole shifter assembly. That's pretty pricey.
My g37 (nissan made) is stuck in park after being in an accident. Could this solenoid still be the problem? What else could cause the car not to go into gear? It has 55k miles by the way
It could be the solenoid or the tab at the bottom like I show, or it could be something else. I'm not a mechanic, I'm just an amateur wrench. You could try replacing the solenoid, but if it's been in an accident you probably should take it to a shop. Sorry if that's not much help.
NomaderWhat I haven't seen the car yet, took the gamble and bought it at an online auction. I'm hoping I can get it into gear with the shift lock mechanism so I know it's not a bigger problem. Will be figuring out by Wednesday

What was the issue?. My 08 pathfinder is difficult to shift out of park.
The metal tab wasn't puchingthe little button so the solenoid would not unlock the shifter. If you press the brake and don't hear a click that might be the problem.
My shifter moves ok, but the indicator is stuck in reverse (& transmission) I tried disconnecting the battery cable but no joy. Any ideas?
Had a similar problem a few months ago. The shift cable had come off the shifter. In my case the plastic bushing holding the end of the shift cable disintegrated. I got a new one online. Pain in the butt snapping the new bushing in, but it did the trick. For an emergency fix I pulled the trim off, hooked the end of the shift cable on the post on the right side of the shifter, and held it in there with a bent paper clip I think. It was a really sketchy fix, but it got me home. If you're cable is still attached in the cab, check the other end under the hood where it connects to the transmission.

I have a 2012 Nissan maxima and the same thing happen. My problem though turned out to be a fuse. I was doing a wiring project and apparently burned the fuse for the brake lights. I ended up replacing that fuse to fix the brake light issue and then all of a sudden I could shift my car again. Apparently there seems to be a low-voltage wire that gets power when you press the brake pedal. So when the fuse blew no power was getting there. Try this first
Just watch the video in the problem. I'm having is when I connect the plug into the selector shifter lock it pops a fuse and I still can't get it to shift. What do you think? No.
Sounds like a short somewhere. Maybe a bad selector solenoid.

that's a little beyond my expertise, but it sounds like your shift cable either broke or somehow came off the shifter. If you go to about 7:45 in the video you'll see a yellow cable going toward the front of the car. There should be a ring on the end that is attached to the shifter. If that's attached and everything still moves, it could be where the cable connects to the transmission. I can't help much with that end. I'd recommend getting a Haynes manual for better instructions if you're a DIY'er, or calling a mechanic.
I was going for the quick access fix suggested by Marc baculy but I seemed to have knocked the metal piece out of position. Now I've torn the whole thing apart and I can't find that metal piece! Anyone have this issue? I'm sort of surprised I can find it...
Finally was able to fish the clip out using a coat hanger and blindly sweeping in the little recess under the shifter mechanism. Couldn't see it but knew it had to be down there. Eventually it swept out and I made the fix as described. Seems to be working so far - thanks!
What about the manual shifter? When I slide to that it is not working.
I haven't had that problem. I think its a different mechanism in the shifter.

Hello. Thanks for your information. It was very helpful. Mine is not stuck perminent.. the shift release button on the gear shift does not fully depress some times. I have to wiggle with it to get it to fully depress than it moves out of park. And I do not remember hearing the clutching sound if the solanoid ever. Is my problem similar to need the same fix. Chian-Tilung Abraham That's how it started for me. It would not work the first few times, but I eventually could shift out of park. It got to where it would never work and i had to push the release with a screwdriver. The switch could be your problem.
