I like my nikon 26mm but the price is really high compared to that lumix and slightly bigger and much heavier ( around 3 times the weight ). I guess lumix wanted the cheapest and smallest lense to go with their S9, that combo is both light and small, great for everyday photo even if a 35 could have been better for that kind of photography, like with the X100VI but full frame ^^
Definitely not for everyone, but there are street photographers who are sticking to MF lenses. In this usecase, F8 is a preferred choice. However, I'd like to see distance scale and depth of field marking on the lens. S9 may give focus distance in LCD, but DoF is not displayed as far as I know. To be honest, though, I wanted something similar to 20mm F1.7 in MFT world. So I'm a bit disapointed as I have to wait more.
Agree with everything you said. Actually, one thing I completely missed in the review is that it does NOT display the focus scale or automatically trigger a magnify window when you focus. which suggests there are something missing in terms of communication.
@@TheRealRichardWong Oh i hope that's problem only in the preproduction models. Besides I always enjoy your reviews - thank you so much for creating informative reviews 🙌
I don't think that's the problem of preproduction models. Usually for Panasonic preproduction model is pretty much 100% final in terms of hardware, apart from some minor firmware bugs ocassionally.
Early adopters of the S9 will get the 26mm for free. So Panasonic developed a throwaway lens for the purpose. In that way it makes some sense, but as a $200.00 add-on? Ah not so much.
The S9 is an S5 ii in miniature for video shooting. Great! This lens, however, is useless for video, since you cannot put an nd filter on it, whatever its other characteristics. I am eligible to get the lens for free. I am willing to sell it brand new and untouched for $100. Any takers? Btw, the Sigma 45mm f2.8 is the perfect kit lens for the S9. It was given away free with the S5. I am not selling that.
I love Panasonic cameras, but the S9 has me mystified. Panasonic made too many design concessions in an attempt to make a full-frame camera what it can never be, a small camera given of the size of the lenses it needs. The 26mm manual focus lens with a fixed aperture size of F8, which is needed to actually make the S9 appear to be a small form-factor camera, is a joke. If I put my Panasonic/Leica 15mm F1.7 on a M43 Gx9, I will have an auto focus camera with better low light performance and a shallower depth of field than the full frame S9. (Did I mention the GX9 has an EVF?) Hard pass on the S9 and their kit lens. Panasonic, update the GX9 with a better EVF and screen, use the G9 M2 sensor with its improved IBIS and its new hybrid autofocus system, and then you will have a near-perfect small form-factor camera.
Honestly I don t understand this lens (no autofocus … o mn one of the best autofocus of the market now) and more generally the pancakes … they are usually not as good as larger ones , with a rather bad ergonomy ( not enough room between the rings) and a poor aperture …and finally generally expensive … and all that for what ? To put it in a pocket with a small camera but who cares !!! So for me pancakes lenses are just non sense and this one is part of the worst. Panasonic plse wake up the market is sufficiently hard and tense so no need to deliver such a true marketing error … :((.
great vid and review Richard, thoughts for me - this is a real miss from Panasonic, just to make it compact?! I need to watch the camera review - I'm really liking the form factor of the camera - love seeing the compact cameras with full frame, just missing a few crucial feature - the cold shoe, I guess the target audience is different. Would love to see if they develop something like S7. interesting anyway :)
Hey Kunal, are you referring to the lens? I feel the lens is quite a miss match to the s7 audience (smartphone user), the upcoming 18-40 would be much better match for the s7
This lens is one of this new camera key mistakes. This lens is slow, MF only. Canon and Nikon have pancake lenses that are F2.8 with full AF. Panasonic should have made it fixed focal length if they were heading this way- just hyper focal. Seriously, meh. This lens better be included for free.
The Nikon 26mm f2.8 proves a much better pancake lens is possible. Shame on Lumix.

@@malekith13 It is 3 stops faster a proper working lens AF, aperture, etc it is all of 6mm longer
Yeah but nikon cost 2x the price
@@harryvlogs7833 yeah the Nikon pancake is kinda pricy, but to be fair canon 28 pancake is pretty cheap too but f2.8 with AF ^^
@@malekith13 I'll take the f8 good for keeping things in focus
200 USD for F8 lens without AF? Really?(
with that spec, the nikon z 26mm is a wonder.
that is an expensive body cap.
The Nikon 26 is pretty nice, but yeah 100€ too much ^^
@@malekith13 AF and f2.8
I'm sorry, this lens is a dud. Too expensive for what it is. No autofocus and only f8?
(Points at Nikon's 40mm f2 ) what's stopping us from doing that?
I would love to see some AF pancake (or cupcake) like the Nikkor Z

We take the protective cover from the bayonet mount + nail + hammer and save 200 bucks. P.s don't thank me)))

And here I thought the old Olympus BCLs were a bit overpriced...
It doesn't even have distance markers...
$200 for this and the mount isn't even metal?
F8? Nice joke 😂.
Manual Focus, helps to avoid the question of why no PDAF at F/8 or greater.
Nice lens perfect for everyday point and shoot
Lumix 26mm F8 lens ❌
200$ body cap with an axxhole ✅

Love your panorama-shaped photos Richard!
Thank you Gordon!
That lens costs them about $5 to make. Ridiculous to use that on a FF.
It was MF lens? Oh, I didn't expect that, at all.
Maybe the rumored small Sigma 24-50 zoom might be a better combination with the S9?
Not sure about rumoured lens, but if it's between 24-50 or 18-40, I would 100% choose 18-40 as my everyday lens

@@TheRealRichardWong yeah agree. ohh and the "S7" I was just imagining maybe in the future they might develop a camera in between the S5 and S9 haha
@@KunalKumar1 yes i was guessing that could happen too. actually I talked about that a bit in my S9 review as well
“They are more like a cupcake” 😂😂😂
Great video
Nothing wrong with cupcake, they are just as yummy!
Hi Richard, So short video. Hahahahahaha. Thanks for the video.
Haha there really isn't much to test or talk about. I am surprised my review is over 6mins long! 😂
That' why I skipped his S9 video.
😍😍😍Always impressed me!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks Dala!

There is the 18-40mm coming later this year which I think is the lens for the s9
It is included for free. Search for the promotions.
It's a cute li'l toy lens. I'd love one for free.
@@TheRealRichardWong I agree that zoom looks much more interesting. But that also means not buying this camera yet until that lens is out.
Yeah but they cost double and are bigger
This lens is a joke, especially for a camera launch, which was also a joke in itself
