Switzerland and Norway. At least in Switzerland the taxes are low and salaries high, but wonder how Norwegians survive with 50% taxes and those crazy prices. Not to mention the weather.
Norway is very very expensive in terms of everything. After pandemi it has become even more expensive and interest rates on housing loans are doubled up and will be tripled up in next month. Person spends a lot on daily grocery shopping.
The cost of living seems to be increasing every year, making it harder to keep up.
Indeed, it's becoming quite challenging to manage expenses.
I've actually managed to stay ahead of the curve. I'm even contemplating early retirement.

I'm surprised. Those rents are still a lot cheaper than NYC. You can't even get a roommate for USD1,200 in NY. Actually all of it is much cheaper than NYC. I was expecting it to be a lot more expensive. I rent my 44sq meter studio in Brooklyn for $3,000 USD. I've always been able to get a tenant. I've seen other studios in my building go for $3,400.00

Same for San Francisco. Real estate in San Francisco will be more expensive than Zurich and similar to New York.
The Swiss franc is worth more than the dollar though. 1200 dollars is "only" 1000 Swiss francs.

Zurich is most comparable to Miami for its size and population density. Also comparable to Chicago for population density. You can get a 2 bedroom apartment easily in a fancy building in Chicago with the monthly rent you pay for a studio flat in Manhattan.
True, NYC is expensive for no reason especially if you think the money you pay for the pace you get. Shoe box $1800 month 😂

my suggestion for everyone who lives in switzerland is to travel to italy by car once or twice a month and do a massive shopping from there. stock some meat, eggs, milk etc etc...they are all half the price than switzerland

I’d venture to bet here in San Diego California is just as expensive, if not more with housing, utilities, and car expenses with having to drive longer distances than most in Europe. My gas and electric bill for a family of 4 is 460 and water alone is 260-315 USD
I just moved here and just health insurance is 430 with the highest deductible.. Didn't expect that
as a native i can say, if you own a house in zurich, i would definitely assume you are rich, buuutttt if you move to a canton like Thurgau.. there it is quite normal to live in owned houses, because the prices are different.

Thanks for the informative program on cost of living in Switzerland. I have seen many scenic videos of your country and it is very beautiful specially in the tourist destinations. Many Swiss and Scandinavian people are moving to Australia because of our warmer climate, beautiful natural landscape, beaches, quality housing, high standard of education, health, infrastructure and well paid job opportunities. We are also very neutral political country and people from Europe, Asia and North America have adopted this country as their new motherland. We have natural snow fields, oldest rain forest (Danetree) and temperate vegetation. There is an average of 2426 hours of sunlight per year in Sydney (of a possible 4383) with an average of 6:38 of sunlight per day. It is sunny 55.4% of daylight hours. The remaining 44.6% of daylight hours are cloudy or with shade, haze or low sun intensity. You will love it here because you will feel alive (no dark cold winters here).
Our cost of living is nothing like in Switzerland even though at present it is higher than normal. I believe Switzerland is over-rated country for it has to offer its citizens. Our GDP is much larger than your country. Also, we don't have any have nuclear powered power plants in Australia unlike four in your country. So Chernobyl disaster will never happen here. And each household must pay yearly 335 for the radio and TV fee irrespective of whether or not you have TV or Radio. And specific Garbagebag you can buy from supermarket around 30 CHf for 10 pieces of 30L .

Housing here in Switzerland is getting out of control. 2024 will bringing more increase in the costs and I don't know who will be able to keep up with this game here. Salaries are not accompaning this trends, since the competition is also getting high and new people coming here are willing to make big sacrfices to stay in the big cities, accepting lower salaries.
And those who are still getting seduced by the "low taxes" here, get ready for the insane cost of living, since the country makes sure you will spend a lot of money to stay here. They are not stupid.
And this whole situation drives the locals crazy, because they say it's the foreigners' fault that it is so expensive to live here.
It's not that in most western counties now. I should know... I live in New Zealand. A place known for its unaffordability and also hugely overrated

@@claudiaandjan Cuz its like 450chf for a month on a small sallary before you apply for lowering it down. When they lower your health insurance then it is ok. It can be like 10chf per month. So see the difference in 450 vs 10chf. I came from a 2nd world country where my employer was paying my health security from brutto sallary, and it was 30 euros per month and it covered almost everything. At around 26, I was in hospital for around 25-30 days, two operations and I was insured by my dad as a student. I paid 0$ for that. I really don't know what would happen if that is situation here.

Compare the cost of Living to the earnings the average earnings a month. If the averare swiss salary is around 6000CHF a month and the average cost of housing around 1800 ... How much absolute money remains for spending every month ?
And maybe moving to a village is smarter ... I pay 350 health insurance with 300 coverage.
Very expensive, around the same prices of San Francisco but 100% prettier and better style of living (healthier, less stress, etc)

switzerland is cheap to live u can find some apartments with 500 euros outside of cities with 20 mins train travel, i even lived there for less 200 euros per month for a while in a basement back then ,it was great time i cannot find any other eu cities have such low prices , not just for rental,food price from supermarkets are not expensive at all , it is almost the same price that poor eastern european have with the same high quality foods, as long as avoid eating at restaurants , the cost of living can bring down to less than 800 euros (rent,food with insurance + 80chf train )

Why are you looking for a Flat in the center of Zurich. the S-Bahn is so quickly in the center, and the rent in suburban Winterthur and other smaller towns is mostly 30 to 40% less.

Switzerland is a beautiful country where you will be able to have plenty of career opportunities, whereas Denmark offers incredible benefits to those who want to create a family. It also offers an amazing balance between life and work, which sometimes Switzerland (or Zurich) might not offer, as people focus quite a lot in their professional life. Additionally, Denmark has great beaches, while Switzerland has dreamy lakes and mountains. Best of luck with your decision. Any of them will bring you great adventures ⭐️
Basically Switzerland is an expensive hotel where you think you are making more money (due to „low“ taxes) than anywhere else for such high standards, but this is just a catch. The amount of money you will have to pay for the rest is just insane. And if you believe that sharing an apartment with four or five people, to be able to afford to live in the city, there’s nothing to discuss then.
And just for information: salaries in Zurich are getting substantially lower, due to the amount of people in the city. There are so many people willing to accept anything just to stay in the city and the market here is not stupid.
Costs are getting higher and higher every year, salaries are not following this trend, and I wonder who will be able to afford to stay here from now on.
I pay 15-20 usd everyday for food in south texas this is not too bad

So, one question I have is what happens when people begin to get older and maybe closer to a retirement age, what happens if they've been forced to rent a flat? Do they just get booted to the street or what?
According statistics I live in one of most poor countries in Europe. But if I compare prices and income comes to the same. 7 fr for beer there and 0.5 fr here. Also, we have free health care and education.

The real insanity of cost of living will hit you as soon as you have kids. If you are lucky - or unlucky - that your salary is „too“ high to receive any support (daycare, insurance for example) by the city/gov, the costs will suddenly explode.

We had a baby last year and we applied for Prämienbewilligung for this year 2023 but they rejected us because they calculated the last finalized tax’s which as of now is from 2021 when I was working and so they won’t help us. So we have to wait till
Next year when 2022 tax is finalized…. We are struggling 😭

How much do the jobs there pay their citizens to live at a high rate? That's what I need to know. Yes, everything is costly but is it balanced out with high paying incomes from stable jobs? In the states, in California, it's not only expensive to live you also don't get paid enough money to live here. Unless you're in the tech industry, it's hard to live here on a minimum wage jobs. No matter how much you work you're never able to sufficiently afford the cost of living here. How does the cost of living balance out with the income made by the people who live in Switzerland?

You are mixing things up a bit with housing costs.
Big part of the apartments you show are furnished apartments. Those are SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than those unfurnished.
Most apartments on the market comes empty with fully finished bathroom and kitchen (with all the appliances). You need to get your own furniture.
Also, you are showing fancy apartments in the most expensive spots of the city with some good views.
Prices of such apartments are artificially pumped up as the owner hopes to find someone who's gonna pay that kind of money (and they do find them unfortunately!)
Yes, housing is expensive in Switzerland, especially in Zurich and Geneva but if I would compare it to prices let's say in London or Dublin, you get much better value for your money in Swiss. I lived in those cities so I have a pretty good overview.
Also, videos like this seems to imply that everyone lives in biggest Swiss cities. And this is not true at all. Vast majority of people live in small towns and villages up to 30 mins by train around those bigger cities. Prices there are sometimes much lower and I would strongly argue who enjoys better quality of life. Of course you don't get cinemas and bigger shopping malls but do you need them every day? Or even week?
For young people and couples, yeah... It's more fun to live in bigger city but as you grow older and especially when you get kids, your priorities change drastically. You can live in big city in nearly every developed country and still have fun there but Switzerland is all about countryside in true.

Living in the countryside is much more affordable. For example, for 1200 you can get a simple 3 room apartment. Because of the food prices: Migros is one of the two big discounters, but not the cheapest. Food quality is generally very high. Also: Switzerland has an excellent railroad network. You can easily and comfortably go to Zurich at any time. I also live in the countryside and can't understand why people always want to go to Zurich.
Why do you want to live in center of Zürich… you have insane public trnsportation all over Switzerland and you can still afford a nice appartement in the souroundings of the town.

It is very convenient for us to enjoy the commodities of the city, as well as to go to work by bike. To be able to get around by bike is a true luxury for us, as we love to do it 😊

We have so much demand of reliable appartments in Zürich… and „normal“ people can‘t afford a convienient appartement, because of expats are paying any price to assure their benefits.
So i think this is more a social political problem than yours…

No, you can be an EU citizen and either stay in Italy and work from there or move to Switzerland getting a a work permit (L or B depending on your contract. )

How much do you pay for rent?
If you are going to search in Zurich you will pay for a 2-bedroom apartment around 1900 - 2900, depending on condition and location and size I would say. Most flats are around 2400 so in the middle of the number I mentioned.

1,200 for a studio is somehow cheap compared to Portland, OR, and it is not even the most expensive city in the United States!

You can’t compare here to Spain, you have a bigger population, and are in the EU, we are not. It’s not really worth it anymore to go to Konstanz to buy a lot of things. You have picked the dearest city in Switzerland to live in. I live in the eastern part of the country and i don’t pay Sfr 25 for pizza, no way.

We are living in Zurich where 25 CHF for a pizza is a pretty normal price 😀 Yes Switzerland and EU are not the same, but very close to each other and a lot of people from EU come to Switzerland. Most of us think in the scale of where we are raised hence it is just natural to compare to your home country. You probably also compare in your head sometimes the prices, when you are outside of your home town for e.g. vacations 😀☀️ Have a great week and best wishes 😀

@@claudiaandjan Hi there! What I mean is that the NYC area is a complex megalopolis (larger in population than many countries like Switzerland, for example) with a somewhat range of prices. But in spite of the obvious socioeconomic differences and inequality between different areas, it is almost always invariably expensive, even the not so nice areas. When all is said and done, it is possibly one of the most expensive places in the world.

CHF and EUR are basically the same. The video would be correct in both currencies, but are referring here to CHF as you also can see when screen recoding 🙂👍
