This was my first live experience with Tool (2001) and it was amazing. It sounded exactly the same as the album. Maynard's vocals were totally on point.
They actually started their tour in California, then came to New Zealand, then nine months later they returned at the end of their world tour.

Yeah, it kinda goes up and down of it.. If I remember correctly the workin title of this song was 987.
Song's main theme features successive time signatures 9/8, 8/8, and 7/8. The number 987 is the sixteenth integer of the Fibonacci sequence. :P
      Black (1)
      then (1)
      white are (2)
      all I see (3)
      in my infancy (5)
Red and yellow then came to be, (8)
      reaching out to me (5)
      Lets me see (3)
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine (13)
Drawn beyond the lines of reason (8)
      Push the envelope, (5)
      watch it bend (3)
And then in the next time it changes:
      Black (1)
      then (1)
      white are (2)
      all I see (3)
      in my infancy (5)
Red and yellow then came to be, (8)
      reaching out to me (5)
      Lets me see (3)
There is so much more (And) beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities (21)
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine (13)
Drawn outside the lines of reason (8)
      Push the envelope, (5)
      watch it bend (3)

Tool was a strange band for me to grasp as well during the time that Lateralus was released. For me, my own immaturity kept me from appreciating them the way I do 15 years later. In my own opinion, of course, Lateralus is the best album ever recorded. Regardless of genre

I hope you pull up the lyrics when listening to Tool. I'm going to let another Tool army genius explain the math in that song in the lyrics. It's pretty cool. One thing for sure is every Tool song is a grower as it's really too much to take in one listen. I had to laugh when you said you like simple. I could not be more opposite from you as a closet drummer.. LOL! Peace from WA USA. Oh, and do Right in two from Tool with lyrics. You will not believe how relevant that song is today!

What I like about Tool, is that they know there's infinite possibilities on how to deliver a message and use all tools available flawlessly, regarding the capabilities of each sound that each instrument can produce. I can say I'm a simple man too, just in a different way, because for me, they are simply making you feel the message with the all the music rather than with just the vocals, and I simply don't care if I'm moving my head on time, because what matters is that I'm moving it just the way it makes me feel, decoding the message in my own way, with my free will... And that's always the right thing to do, regardless of time signatures! Greetings and hope you keep going with that journey! =)

You said you never relax because you don't know what is next. I think this is a classic case of allowing yourself to give in to the music and trust it. The best analogy I can give would be a Chinese finger trap, the harder you pull your fingers the tighter the trap becomes, but it you go against your initial urge and just relax your fingers, they slide right out. Just allow you body and brain to go on the ride. Tool did all the work, all you have to do is just experience it with an open and relaxed mind free of predetermined assumptions on what think it will be. Spoiler alert, it almost never ends up as you think it will in my experiences.

@@dannytheswedishmusixian1513 - I would suggest to ease into it. The more accessible songs to start with are: The Pot (which you did), Vicarious, 46&2, Aenima, H, Stinkfist, and Eulogy. Stay away from live or lyric videos (the Grudge was a bad one for you). And what ever you do, DO NOT listen to Third Eye, Jambi, Rosetta Stoned. These are awesome songs but hard to listen on the first try as they are very prog.

  • @Burkhimself
    @Burkhimself 3 года назад +10

Part of the reason of the “unable to relax” might be due to this song being written around fibonaci’s numerical sequence. Hard to explain, you can google it. It’s wild how they wrote an entire song around it....up until the very end they did a small change.....best song ending of all time in my opinion

@@Burkhimself you're both right: the syllabic pattern of the lyrics intentionally follows Fibonacci's sequence in parts. The meter shifts from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8 and a lot of super fans read into this as 987 (or the 16th number in the sequence) but Danny has stated that part is merely a coincidence

I definitely get what you are saying about the simple side of music...these guys are basically the complete opposite end of the spectrum. I’ve always said I had to train my ear in the beginning to fully appreciate these guys. The stuff is so dense it takes multiple listens to fully lock it in, so I’d go back and give some of the tracks a listen again down the road, they make it worth the effort in my humble opinion. As a musician yourself there is definitely something to be learned by throwing Tool into the rotation. Descending is more straightforward and traditional but it’s a long one, you’ll likely be drained but it’s worth it IMO haha. Or if you want something that hits hard and direct try Vicarious. Either way, you keep doing you man, great channel!

The members(no pun intended) of Tool are all outstanding musicians, so that's a given. Lyrically though, I think they are just so thought and emotion provoking. If you were to have started listening from their first stuff until more recent, they've certainly had a bit of an arc themselves. I can only imagine how intriguing this band would be if I had never heard them before. Enjoy the journey. Whatever path you take.

You are moved when you listen to this music- even though you tend to be more deeply moved by things when they are conveyed simply.
    I think I have the answer…
The complexity of other bands may seem trite or forced...
But this... this is complexity with depth. This is complexity with meaning.
*This* is the complexity you’ve been waiting for. It’s the reason musicologists of the future will study Tool as a *genre*

  • @prefono

Lateralus is really progressive. You should read something about how this song was written. It's unbelievable that something so complex and with so many layers, could still be so musical. If you tell to an average musician to compose a track following all those rules you get only a lot of noise.

In progressive music there's always a beat to follow somewhere; usually a somewhat steady high hat, tom, or bass (or even the bass guitar if that's setting the beat), you just have to find it. You'll never get it on the first listen; prog is always something you have to consume over and over again until it becomes a part of you.

I'm pretty drawn to "challenging" music, but I would still consider Tool simple in some sense. The complexity is not as advertised as some other music, and I think a lot of people enjoy Tool without considering it complex. It's more of a behind the scene thing. And they have surely opted for rhythmical complexity rather than harmonically, so it doesn't seem to be their goal to "wow" their audience.

09:50 - I guess you are using Telia and they are notoriously bad with RUclips. Everything else works fine, speedtest does not show any issues to any server in anywhere in the word but YT just does not load. Some rumours around the internets that I found few years back when it was even worse stated that the negotiations with Telia and some other company that has something to do with YT connections are not going well which causes Telia not getting as much bandwith which then leads to buffering issues.
Seems a bit far fetched, but since all issues are with YT, plausable.
And no, this issue has not started with this CoV-crisis, this has been going on for ten years. :D
With my previous ISP I had only 50meg connection but never had any buffering issues with YT. Well unless there was a general issue with my connection, that is..
