Taika Waititi and More ‘Our Flag Means Death’ Cast and Creators on Fashioning Pirate Humor

- Rhys Darby, who plays ‘gentleman pirate’ Stede Bonnet in HBO Max comedy series ‘Our Flag Means Death,’ joined executive producers Taika Waititi (who also directed the pilot and plays Blackbeard in the show), series creator David Jenkins, and Garrett Basch, as well as Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley to talk about finding the funny in pirate tales and what works for them in high-seas fashion. Loosely based on the true adventures of the 18th century would-be pirate, the 10-episode season premieres March 3 with two episodes, continues with three episodes March 10 and two episodes on March 17, and concludes with two episodes on March 24.

Synopsis: The unique new comedy is loosely based on the true adventures of 18th century would-be pirate, Stede Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby. After trading in his comfortable life for one of a buccaneer, Stede becomes captain of a pirate ship, but struggles to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew. Stede’s fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard, played by Taika Waititi.

I don’t know why but Taika and Rhys using their own accents for their characters makes it even funnier
Yes! There's an Armando Iannucci film called The Death of Stalin which does this too so, even though they're all supposed to be Russian, you've got Americans and Brits with regional accents portraying them and it just seems funnier for it. Same with the kid's show Horrible Histories. I also just love hearing Antipodean accents so I'm glad they got to speak like themselves.
@@han5234 I wonder if it's because the New Zealand accent sounds so friendly? To me it's one of the least intimidating accents, so the fact they're pirates but speaking so softly just makes the whole thing hilarious lol

it’s both funny and familiar for me as an australian, our slang and way of speaking is very similar and so our humour is also compatible.
@@han5234 thats nothing new since cinema started all films regardless what country they are meant to be in always spoke with americans accents or british ones as if theirs were the only accents in the world

Their chemistry together is off the charts, IMO! It's great that they know each other so well and are friends. I love their accents, and it doesn't even matter about proper accents, to me. That isn't what the show is about.

I hope the fact that they're getting good sleep means they're up for making a season two. It seems like they have a lot of passion for the show and it would suck if they couldn't continue because of burn out.
