"...you know, and then the kiss on the beach is like, another moment that I think is pretty strong" lmao the way he says it so casually, as if that kiss wasn't groundbreaking and life-changing for so many people.
i couldn't agree more with the part about how normalized it is on the show to be queer!! it's so refreshing to see no homophobia, no "it's okay to be gay" moment, and it means a lot.
Really liked the discussion of Taika and Rhys trusting each other. You can really see that kind of support through their roles and the balance of comedy/drama and how well it translates to screen. The care that went into this show as a whole is just *chef's kiss*.
I love watching the interviews of the cast of this show. The fact that all of them are so invested and understand the importance of the queer rep in the way it's being done in this show in particular.
actually really impressive for you to do an in-depth interview with taika. he tends to easily glance off questions, but he's extremely capable of giving thoughtful answers when prompted. so thanks for doing that and not just going 'harhar taika funny man'
honestly I really appreciate Matt’s questions. He doesn’t beat around the bush, he often refers back to Taika’s answers as well as scenes from the show itself so the conversation stays on track. He even steers the conversation towards Taika’s influence as an Indigenous creator which rarely happens in interviews that I’ve seen for OFMD!! I don’t think he dismisses the fact that it’s a gay story either? They go into it for a good chunk of the interview. Maybe it’s because I’m Australian and the rhythm of this conversation just seems friendly and sincere. Those that are more used to a fast paced interviewing style might find this awkward but it seems like a nice respectful conversation to me !! and the guy made his own pirate flag 😭

I love how much impact this series has on all LGBTQIA+ Lives ❤️ AND on a lot of straight lives. The funniest bit is still the straight dudes thinking it's a buddy comedy 😂😂😂 Also I love that they don't have these typical scenes from coming out or needing to talk about it... As taika actually said. Like we don't need that. This show is actually how it could be without having to label or to come out and I love that very much ❤️
My favourite parts of the show is when some self-righteous Colonist or toxically masculine pirate tries to bully with homophobia and the general response from the crew is, "Dude. Not cool. What's your damage?" Queer is the *normal* and the phobes are the freaks.
this was an amazing interview, i started tearing up when taika spoke about how special the LGBTQ+ representation and love story is since there’s no huge monologue about being different, there’s just love and acceptance. that’s so special to me, and so wonderful. this show made me feel so safe, and i’m overjoyed knowing that taika understands how much it means to the community
It has been driving me crazy. If someone says their name a certain way, that's how you're supposed to say it! Also people who spell Jemaine Clement's name wrong.
yeah but he likens that to his own life, he's won an Oscar, he's doing the big budget Hollywood movies, what else is there to achieve as a filmmaker? so in that sense he's quite similar to Ed, a spectacularly successful middle aged guy who's kinda bored and not sure what's next.
tbh,i feel like taika is more open in this interview than in the other ones that ive seen, usually he just tends to make jokes(with that dry kiwi humor of his😂) or to deflect a lot,but he actually gave some really insightful answers here!(also yes plss we need an ofmd blooper reel🙏)
@@smolnono I'd chalk it up to Zoom interviews being awkward in general. I caption them on the daily and no matter how nice the conversation's going, most of them are just... like that.
yeah it seems just like most zoom interviews, especially the bits where they interrupt a bit or step on each others words, it's just the curse of the platform unfortunately
Jeez, not even two minutes in and that poor interviewer is a blubbering mess. He’s SO intimidated. He was like ‘My career is over’ after that first question.
Taika's a journalists nightmare to interview 😭 He either rambles or deflects questions with humour This interview was actually great though after they got comfortable. Taika gave some really insightful answers
I love that Taika is always just honest, even if that doesn't mean he's being the best advocate for the show or the best and easiest interviewee. deep down most actors probably hate those press things but it's nice when it turns into an honest conversation with some real insights.
Esperemos que no, hay un super hype x él gracias a los marvelitas, espero que sepa mantenerse un poco más discreto xra que la prensa no lo acose y saque algo que no quisieramos ver. Amo OFMD y espero que siga de buena en la 2da temporada
He's right to be proud of not stringing out the kiss. That's big.

Taika's eyes look extra beautiful here. Anyone??
He’s got a kind of Omar Sharif kind of look going on in this interview, and I am here for it.
Yes, beautiful eyes!
the way he just stares at the beginning is SO FUNNY😭
not the interviewer literally refusing to acknowledge the fact that it's a gay romance lmao
As a journalist, the way he started answering the first question gave me the heebie-jeebies. Thankfully he started explaining.
i actually found it quite funny

I clicked on this video cause I love Taika Waititi, but I had not even heard of this show! Can't wait to binge it now!

WHY does everyone mispronounce his surname?? How many times does he have to say his own name, as he does OFTEN? "WY- teetee"

The flag Taika describes at 16:40 sounds suspiciously like what must have been the pitch for the Love + Thunder Poster :D
