- Taika talks to guest host Sarah Silverman about his show “Reservation Dogs” on FX on Hulu, his Maori upbringing in New Zealand, his mom making him read poetry as a punishment, quarantine with his daughters, and the photo of him Rita Ora and Tessa Thompson being shared all over the internet while he was in Australia shooting Thor.

Indigenous people the world over have gained an opportunity to tell their stories because of Taika. I really wish him nothing but the best.
He’s Maori, it’s super ignorant to think that all people from oppressed indigenous groups have to identify with a (half) Maori man

Taika is so based in everything he does. I love him
Good on Taika using his platform to help promote others.

I find it absolutely appalling that indigenous people in the U.S. are not represented or focused on more in entertainment. I don’t understand it. And it took someone from NEW ZEALAND to make a show like this happen.
You don’t understand it? Maybe a little more US history is in order...
As a member of the Cherokee nation who still lives in the Cherokee nation I can assure you it's not a priority AT ALL more important things we worry about then representation in entertainment usually when they do they seek out consultation and are super respectful
same thing with Mexican culture. We're indigenous too but we get alienated. and our culture gets appropriated a lot, like the cowboy stereotype, a lot of "cowboys" have confederate flags and want Mexicans out despite them not being from here and dressing just like us. bit ironic really.
...................
@delulu mexican portrayal in media is often depicted as stereotypes and not even accurate. Usually portrayed by white americans for white Americans
Kudos to Jimmy. All these guest hosts prove just how hard it is to interview and be funny doing it.
Anthony Anderson did the best job so far

He is brilliant on so many levels and Sarah Silverman literally made me squirm 😵💫
She is kind of cringe personified, and he is anti cringe personified.
It’s because everyone knows how much Taika HATES doing these press junkets. Like, reeeeeeeally dislikes them. It’s almost like dealing with a hostile witness🤣.

"I know you have a Cohen in somewhere in your family tree." GIRL. HE'S THE COHEN. That's his legal last name. He got it from his mother. Who's Jewish. Holy hell, talk about a swing and a miss, Sarah.
Is waititi not his legal last name?
waititi is his father's last name, but legally he had his mother's last name, cohen. he would use either in his different creative projects, and ended up sticking with waititi for his film career.

Rez dogs is gonna be such a great show!! Thank you taika for bringing some more attention to the indigenous culture!!
She’s a naturally spontaneous/awkward entertainer and that works great for her. But that type of style makes a terrible interviewer. He showed great poise in order to make it watchable
This guy is so funny, and he wasn't given a good interview
Right? She was kinda annoying. He deserved better interview questions. I mean, at least keep the focus on Rez Dogs. 🤷♀️
He should've been interviewed by Anthony Anderson

Yeah sarah sucked at the interview
Jojo is such a masterpiece, wonderful screenplay, Taika definitely deserves his Oscar :)
Sarah's interview style comes off a bit hostile and standoffish. I know she's doing a bit, but I feel like the guests look uncomfortable.
Even the way the seat and desk are arranged are very impersonal.
This was a pretty awkward interview legit lol
It was cringe lol
True, but then the terms ‘Awkward’ and ‘Sarah Silverman’ are pretty much interchangeable anyway.

You should tell him. He might leave his girlfriend for you.
I wonder if they're only allowed to promote one thing at a time (if they have conflicting studios). Free Guy has enough press, but this is the first I've heard about Reservation Dogs, so I think he chose the less promoted thing.
The Hunt for the Wilderpeople is great too! It’s on Netflix in the US and Taika directed it.
Taika’s accent isn’t that hard to understand..
As an American I feel like a New Zealand accent is easier to understand than many other accents.
Edit/afterthought* it's also a lovely sounding accent.
As a non English speaker, I find Taika's accent easy too.
I understood him just fine. 🤷♀️ Her questions were trash anyway, so why did she care to have him speak up? Just ask the next superficial trash question.

I'm not American and don't regularly watch late night talk shows but I have never been a fan of Jimmy Fallon. I truly think Sean from Hot Wings combined with the charisma of Graham Norton is the way forward for talk show hosts, having meaningful conversations with celebrities. This was like a cheesy awkward bite/ grab for 5 mins of content where they are trying to get a funny line to use for the video title, when the person sitting in front of her is an absolute genius who has so much knowledge to share. A real waste but we can blame it on the format of late night shows.
Just imagine Craig Ferguson conducting this interview. Comments like "Well, I'm not wearing clothes" wouldn't have gone unnoticed.

Despite Taika being so charming and comical, this interview was HARD to sit through. The interviewer was soo awkward!
this interview was pretty normal, up until she told him to talk in a more understandable accent, didn't understand why that was wrong, and then awkwardly showed him a picture, not taken by him, of him, his girlfriend, and his leading actress in a threesome kiss, even Jimmy wouldn't have made this that awkward
Questioning his Jewishness was far from normal. Super-offensive, even.

Maybe she was referring to how Thomasin McKenzie (who is not Jewish, as far as I know) played Elsa, the little Jewish girl, in the film?
