Same! FFV might not have the best plot in the series but the job system rules! FF Tactics is the GOAT in this regard but FFV scratches that itch nicely IMO
i love the job system, but in all honesty, there's a mod for the gba version that i think makes it even better. as it make it closer to how it works in the tactics game, by allowing you to pick 2 abilities instead of 1. that small change gives so much freedom for customizating things. i do belive the mod also has a slightly higher dificulty and some other smaller buffs.
@@marcosdheleno if you're a FFT fan and like mods, there's an awesome FFT mod called "The Lion War" you should check out. @nicholaskong1673 I've definitely played FF7. Also I'm not a fan of 7. I think the story is overhyped and the materia system is a little too limiting early game.
Great to see FFV getting some love - this is easily my favorite retro FF, and my third favorite SNES JRPG after Chrono Trigger and Trials of Mana. My favorite thing about this game, even more than the deep and rewarding Job system and party customisation, is the story scenes between the characters: The way they gradually learn about each other and grow closer into this tight-knit found-family, and the way that each character is always a part of each others' personal journey is so sweet and makes the quiet scenes really feel meaningful. To me, the best JRPGs all nail this aspect and this game is one of the earliest to do so.
The fact that the Pixel Remasters actually managed to improve on the music of most of the finest SNES tunes will never fail to impress me. In fact I think the Pixel Remasters might just be the best remakes of any type I've ever seen.
@@PelvicGaming I always laugh when galuf and bartz find out the "truth" about faris and the heart icon lol. Plus the chronicles translation of bartz is hilarious
The gameplay rightfully gets a spotlight when talking about FF5, but I think what they do with the story is also incredibly underappreciated. There is a consistent thematic undercurrent throughout of the burdens the next generation has forced upon them by the old. The world is crumbling because overuse of the crystals by past generations is causing them to shatter; Bartz and company have to go through all these ordeals because the Dawn Warriors sealed away Exdeath rather than try to come up with a more permanent solution, instead deferring the issue to somebody else later down the line; and even the whole crux of Exdeath's creation, being a tree who had too many evil spirits placed within it, speaks to people's impulse to just lock a problem away and try to ignore it instead of facing it head on. And with this being the last game Sakaguchi helmed as director, there is an additional metatextual layer to it - of Sakaguchi getting ready to pass the torch to the next generation of creatives who will have to face the burdens of game creation without him front and center.
I didn't ever hear much about FF5, but once I played it, I absolutely loved it. Over time, it's slowly getting higher and higher on my list of favorite FFs.
Storytime : I obtained the Japanese version of this game in 1993. There were physical differences between our SNES and the Super Famicon in Japan. The cartridge I had was modified - the screws were burned out for it to fit in the SNES. I was a teenager in Texas and didn't know any Japanese. The internet didn't exist. I started going to the public library to check out Japanese language books in hopes that it would help me play the game. I learned absolutely nothing. Katakana was impossibly difficult to learn on the fly. I remember the underwater battle where the guy was murdering me with meteor and was stuck there for awhile. Luckily, I ended up beating him by not attacking him. This mimicry skill changed everything. I eventually beat the game - without knowing one word of Japanese. It's still my favorite "classic" FF game before Sephiroth and FF7 changed everything.
Woah, that's some dedication! Japanese can be a proper PITA. I'm quite good at languages (grew up bilingual and lived in a few European countries) and it took me 4 years or so to reach 'more-or-less' literacy, but I still lack a lot of vocabulary, sadly. In most of Europe, SNES was far less popular and JRPGs basically weren't a thing at all before FF 7 (maybe besides Phantasy Star), so I was playing mostly Western RPGs at that point; those mostly just require you to know English, so the difference is quite substantial. Good ol' 90s, such a different world it was!
Ive been going through a play through of this one myself for the first time. Its so good! Im not super certain of the reception of five nowadays in japan, however in the west why we dont give ff 5 any love is probably because we didnt get it until the gameboy advance. Going from 1, 4, 6 and then 7 i think gives a really good explanation of most western ff fans taste prior to 10
I imported this and Secret of Mana 3 for the snes back in the 90's. Had so much fun trying to translate all the items and abilities. I've always argued that ffv was my favorite as far as combat goes. (Outside of FFXI, but that's a different beast within itself)
Great timing! I just picked up all the pixel remasters and I'm going through them now. Just finished FF1 and now on to 2. It's been many, many years since I last played 5. I can't even remember if I finished it, but I will for sure this time. Soon!
I've been waiting on this review from you and I'm glad you enjoyed it. FF5 is one of my favorites in the series. As soon as that main opening theme hit, it just sets the mood for adventure. I make sure I replay this one at some point every year. Edit: OG FF7 is my all time favorite of the series. 😑 (......still hoping you play it one day.....)
it's great to see a new upload again pelvic. I am slowly getting into jrpgs first one being sea of stars which was great. I recently bough the pixel remaster myself during the summer sale. I am gonna give time and slowly give it a try someday. I have played 1-3 in the past back in the PSP era on the trilogy pack. But it's been ages I forgot most by now so it would be fun to replay through them again.
One thing I will say is, the 2d FFs are pretty as heck 6 especially. Though it's not this videos topic. That thing blew my mind when a Japanese streamer i watch played it years ago.

Yeah, in Japan it's actually 'almost' as popular as FF 6 (similarly to FF 3 being the most popular NES game of the series), but in the rest of the world it wasn't, due to how late it was released; to be fair, the same can be kinda said about Dragon Quest, but that's another topic. Delays/lack of releases can do this to a series.
I'm playing FF9 myself & I'm loving it so far. I'm planning on playing more FF games next year & after hearing from others as well as this video I'm excited to play through V the most.
I'm glad you mentioned early in the video about clutter (Xenoblade 3 in particular). I have the same issues. I'm actually interested in FF 5 now. Great video!
'Battle at Big Bridge' gets a ton of love, deservedly so, but 'The Prelude of Empty Skies' is my favorite track in the game and one of the best dungeon themes I like how FFV is very heartfelt without trying to force it. FFIV is very dramatic all of the time, a damn soap opera
Was just mulling over whether this specific entry is the one on sale I should get. The rest are fine but definitely 5 is underrated. This seals it for me, thanks Pelvic
Final Fantasy 5 is still one of the core final fantasy games that I have not played yet but its certainly a game I will eventually play when I get some free time in my life. My wife has actually played and beaten this game before and even though it's not her favourite - she still got her enjoyment out of it. She thinks the job system i one of the best implementation of jobs in a final fantasy game and she does hold a lot of fondness for final fantasy V for its light hearted approach to storytelling and a loveable yet goofy male lead.
I remember way back when, when I first discovered there was a Final Fantasy 5 in the 90's and imported it and a SFC converter to play on my SNES. I played using a GameFAQs guide to help translate the spells and items and finished the game. What a fun time! Glad to see you were able to play and enjoy it on the Pixel remaster!
FFV feels like the FFIX of the SNES games. Lowkey the best and more in the spirit of OG final fantasy. FFV has the fun replayability factor of series like Fire Emblem and Pokemon.
Very good list PelvG. FFIX is my favorite one too. Anyway, with what you said, I might play the Pixel Remaster sometime this year. Lastly, you should check out Ara Fell or Rise of the Third Power, based on what you described in the beginning, I feel like you'll love them.
Yes, I love this game. This was my first "classic" FF back in the day in the PS1 of all places (and yes, I had played 7, 8 and 9 at that time, but those werent classics yet. I'm old 🧓) Its one of my favorites, for sure.
FFV is the game that solidified the job system; for me, as the best thing SE ever came up with as a central game mechanic. FFIII may have started it; but imho V nails the implementation; and expansion of its ideas, almost perfectly. Couple that with a stellar OST, great bosses, a fun world to find secrets in, fun (if simple) characters, and probably the first effective character death in the franchise. Its in my top 2, right behind FFIX.
This is the Blue Print for Final Fantasy Tactics. But the Blue Print for THIS game is Final Fantasy III! So, since you have the Pixel Remaster, give FFIII a shot. It’s a wonderful little game, especially if you love this style of game with job classes. I remember when I first played Final Fantasy V. I learned how to emulate like 20-22 years ago. I downloaded it and I patched it. I loved it. It was so fun playing 16-bit FF games again. It literally brought me to tears. Just wait til you give Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and Tactics a shot. Prepare to be blown away by VII and Tactics. VIII is hit or miss. It was a hit with me, but I’m a fanboy of all things Final Fantasy, so I can’t be objective. Also, I am interested in hearing your thoughts on Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2, and Lightning Returns. I absolutely love that series, though it gets a lot of hate. Final Fantasy X-2 was a ton of fun. It made the return to Spira so enjoyable, especially with the all female cast! As always, so fun watching your videos. You just put a smile on my face! ❤❤❤❤❤
I'm only a little mad you haven't played 7, but I can't wait to see more FF videos of yours, it's always entertaining to see your experience of them and I think you've done a really good job of going over the story elements too!
Great video! I'm just glad they updated the translation from the PS1 days... The main character name being "Butz" was the first indication that maybe they didn't spend much time on translation back then...!
The pixel remaster just got a physical release (re-release?) announced! So glad I can pick it up physically rather than deal with the initial release BS from the square enix website.
When these remasters dropped on the eshop you could see individual games on the chart and 5 was the highest on the Japanese eshop, which made me wonder they seemed to either like it the most or were most interested in it.
i love when the original composer oversees the rescoring. For me it often feels it adds more to the track but keeps the original spirit. Oh and YES no more smudging the pixels! this is a nice upgrade with out going full out remaster 3d sprites or w/e which imo sometimes look a bit off half the time
I do love this game so much, it's so underrated. To be honest, I prefer V than all favorite VI. FFV is simple, direct, one of the best Uematsu's work, the best job system until FFT, it's so funny to play, it's a hidden gem. Final Fantasy V Advance make my childhood so magical and playing this game almost 15 years later, it's still pretty good.
Just recently picked up the digitally remastered collection. I have been stuck in the hospital long term so this is giving me tons of content to keep me entertained during these difficult times. With 6 complete JRPG on one disk there is hundreds of hours of game play. I have only played FF1, X and XII so I am really excited to get into the first 6 installment of this epic series.
Final Fantasy V is so much fun! ^_^ Probably the most I've enjoyed the turn-based combat in the FFV series, simply due to how much fun it makes switching between jobs. Also, it's irreparably changed the way I view splinters. For those who haven't played the game, I won't spoil the why of that for you ;)
This one was one of my favourite FFs back in the day! I liked putting my characters in new funny costumes and systematically gaining those job points. Because I actually love the grind. In games.
I'm here to arrest you, milady. But only with one cuff, cuz the V love! Little by little you're going through my list of favorites! It was a blast checking you play FFV, this game is a gem! Thanks for the awesome review!
@countquackula8539 I think she has a more specific reason than that though. Could be the setting/look of the game or could be that she's already seen too much of it over the years. 7 isn't my personal favorite but I really like it and I find it interesting that she's been avoiding that one.
H'yep. I played it for the second time ever with the Pixel Remasters last year and I was blown away by how much I enjoyed it. Like, really enjoyed it. It gave me Jim Henson vibes. So charming and fun. So much so, It's in my top three Final Fantasy games with 7 and 9.
Glad to find another person that has fallen in love with Final Fantasy V! The dialogue may be laughable and Faris's dialect has somehow gotten worse in recent releases, but the gameplay is top notch in every single version. I'm simultaneously going for my 4th and 5th playthrough on the Super Famicom and Pixel Remaster (PC), And always remember, "Knights do it 2-Handed! " Edit: I got to the part where you rated FF4 higher than FF5. Sorry--I don't think we can't be friends after all.
Final Fantasy V has mechanics well ahead of their time. Literally the basis for Final Fantasy Tactics, Bravely Default, and other similar games. I just played through it recently for the first time and it's among my favorites in the series.
I've already played this but I couldn't help but start bobbing my head during the music section lol. You definitely picked some great tracks there but I wanna give an honorable mention to Lenna's theme too.
Stuck in the hospital long term so this epic digitally remastered collection is providing me with hundreds of hours of game play to entertain me during these difficult times. Still on FF 1 and the old school graphics and incredible soundtrack offer some true nostalgia as well as epic game play. Looking forward to working my way up to FF 5 but there's no rush. Each game offers something unique while at the same time they all share the things that make this collection a true JRPG old school gem!
Anyone mad at you for not having played 7 yet can get bent. You've played a ton of games I haven't yet or haven't for years, so you'll play it when you're good and ready.
Aww yiss! FFV, the epitome of the job system followed by FFX2. The sprites in the remake look sooo good. I still haven't played this since I played it on GBA so I thinking about picking this up soon.
FFV is definitely the underrated game in the series, it's so good but I never hear anyone talk about it. I played it forever ago on PS1 (basically the same as the SNES version) so i'll definitely have to check out the Pixel Remaster version! Also, I love seeing FFIV so high on your list of faves. It's always been my favorite!
Hiya! Thanks for showcasing some FFV! It's one of my top 3 (that I've played, so far). If you put FFX so high up on your list, then you absolutely MUST play X-2. It's the world of X, but with V's job system!
I remember a feature somewhere ( I can not remember where I first heard this) that illustrated how FFV was received in Japan in much the same way VI was elsewhere, and you can see that in FF16 dev interviews, where most of them cited 5 as one of their favorites / most influential of the series Just reinforces how unstoppable Squaresoft were in the 90s with the amount of generation defining bangers they put out in a 7 year time span
I agree that FFV gets overlooked a lot. It’s definitely the second best 2D sprite FF right behind FF6. 6 has the story, 5 has the cool job system. Good review ❤
Lady Pelvic you need to review Final Fantasy Dimensions! It is truly the hidden gem of Final Fantasy! I know its a mobile game but you know only pay for the story by parts, which is complete, and the controls on mobile are honestly perfect, which baffles me why the ports feel like they have worse controls…
Always glad to see V get love. It has been heavily overlooked because it was sandwiched between IV and VI which are 2 fan favorites. Also this game does not hold your hand. I think I have died more in this one than any other FF because this game really is all about grinding. You need to grind out the levels in the classes you plan on taking with you end game. If you do not have a guide this game can eat up a lot of hours through experimenting alone. I find that most of the FF series games that require a lot of experimenting seem to have the more diverse fanbase. I love FFV and FFVIII for example. The most popular seem to be VI, VII, IX and X. Other than X the other 3 are very much "this character does this and they level up according to their own linear skill tree". Which is fine as I also love those entries but I do find myself replaying the FFV job system and FFVIII functioning system a lot more. I still love I and III which sometimes I love to replay just so I can play V again to feel the progression they made with the job classes.
Yup it gets overshadowed a lot and lost in discussions of the other titles. It’s has some funny light hearted moments too, which are definitely stand out in the early titles.
I just started playing this last night since the collection was on sale, it's more fun than I remember since I played 6 first so 5 seemed pretty generic in comparison. I usually don't like when remasters change the music and visuals, but the updated soundtrack and graphics really make a difference.
I love FFV sososo much! I've played it on GBA and mobile a few years back (old mobile release based on GBA) and it's honestly my fave up there with VIII. If I played as a kid, Faris woulda transed my gender way sooner than it was lol she's so cool. For anyone looking to replay with some shakeups, there's a Custom Classes mod for GBA that rearranges the jobs and mechanics around them. It's probably my favourite mod for a game ever, it made the early game so wild for me :D Also wanna quickly shoutout Four Job Fiesta, a challenge run for FFV based around using limited Jobs. Highly recommend checking it out.
My favourite part of the job system: As soon as MONK was available, change everyone to that. Learn Bare hand. Change job to mages, equip Bare hand skill. Your party can easily obliterate enemies with normal attacks! (useful for grinding)
My favorite weakness exploit in the game is for the game late game boss, AzulMagia. If you speak spanish, his name translates to Blue Magic. So if you're clever enough you can use Self-destruct on him and he'll learn it then use it in his next turn-killing him on the spot. 😂😂
There is a theory that the Gilgamesh from this game is the same Gilgamesh in all other Final Fantasy games. Since he was sucked out of that dimension he has popped up in others. As far as the game goes, it is my second favorite of the Pixel Remaster set and probably 3rd favorite (or tied for second) of all FF games. FF6 is my absolute favorite.
Even though I loved FF5 when I played it about 15 years ago, like REALLY liked it, not as much as 6,7 or 10, but it went at least into my Top 5 FF list. I never managed to replay it aside form starting and putting down again after 20 minutes. x_x But there were so many nice moments and I really liekd the characters
I always giggle when I remember that the original translation rendered Bartz as "Butz." Final Fantasy V is a fun game. The job system is awesome. I think the tone shift from previous games is what breaks people. But you can't beat having the ability to make a white mage who can punch monsters into paste.
Don’t apologize for FF12, we forgive you for not having good taste 😂, lol j/k. I admit the story was forgettable, but the battle system and job classes saved it for me, and I’m talking the PS2 version.
XII is a lot more rewarding if you are already a fan of Ivalice. I've been there since FF Tactics so it felt like coming home for me. I don't know that I would have had the same reaction without that, initially at least.

Heck yeah, this game rocks and I knew you'd see how great it is. We talked a bit when you were playing it on stream and having a blast.
I just need to binge and play all the final fantasies
In games.
That whirlpool does look way more menacing!
This game blew my mind when a translation came out in the 90s and we were able to emulate it.
I remember those days. Ever since then Blue Mage class has been a core part of my personality.
I'm here to arrest you, milady. But only with one cuff, cuz the V love!
Little by little you're going through my list of favorites! It was a blast checking you play FFV, this game is a gem! Thanks for the awesome review!
Uh oh, is 7 one of your favorites? Don't hold your breath for that one. :P
@@PelvicGaming the arrest is for VI being low there. I like VII but that's all, VII is cool tho but not on the list
@PelvicGaming I've always been curious as to why you're not interested in 7. Is it the character design or were you spoiled over the years?
@netoferreira8269 It's not just her. There are people who hate and nitpick the game because it's the most popular FF. It doesn't make sense.
@countquackula8539 I think she has a more specific reason than that though. Could be the setting/look of the game or could be that she's already seen too much of it over the years. 7 isn't my personal favorite but I really like it and I find it interesting that she's been avoiding that one.
My first RPG right there... This is what always comes to my mind when I hear "Final Fantasy", well, this and 4
Oh what a beautiful way to introduced to the genre!!
Now I want to listen to 'Battle on the Big Bridge'.
I'm simultaneously going for my 4th and 5th playthrough on the Super Famicom and Pixel Remaster (PC),
And always remember, "Knights do it 2-Handed! "
Edit: I got to the part where you rated FF4 higher than FF5. Sorry--I don't think we can't be friends after all.
"I wish they did the pirate shtick a little deeper"
Honey, Final Fantasy Anthology would like to know your location.
Listen man, I've only played the game!! T^T
@@PelvicGaming I'm just saying be careful what you wish for. Full Pirate Faris is not one to be trifled with.
yes, put some respekt on FFV's name. my favorite of the nes/snes ff games
FFV is so much fun.
If you like that, I’d also recommend Final Fantasy Dimensions which has a similar jobs system
I must obtain this masterpiece
Anyone mad at you for not having played 7 yet can get bent. You've played a ton of games I haven't yet or haven't for years, so you'll play it when you're good and ready.
VII is good, but ppl gotta chill! Besides, my favorite FF is II 😂
I love the bass guitar. I really enjoyed the pixel remasters orchestra music especially the bass
I think that honor of underrated goes to II.
Hiya! Thanks for showcasing some FFV! It's one of my top 3 (that I've played, so far). If you put FFX so high up on your list, then you absolutely MUST play X-2. It's the world of X, but with V's job system!
First FF game I played was VI back in middle school when it came to the US. Dunno what it is about it, but I think it's one of the best games ever.
I’m not mad at all that you haven’t played Final Fantasy VII. I haven’t either
V on the gba was the final fantasy I played with my cousin; we took turns fighting the bosses great game and great time.
I remember a feature somewhere ( I can not remember where I first heard this) that illustrated how FFV was received in Japan in much the same way VI was elsewhere, and you can see that in FF16 dev interviews, where most of them cited 5 as one of their favorites / most influential of the series
Just reinforces how unstoppable Squaresoft were in the 90s with the amount of generation defining bangers they put out in a 7 year time span
I agree that FFV gets overlooked a lot. It’s definitely the second best 2D sprite FF right behind FF6. 6 has the story, 5 has the cool job system. Good review ❤
IT GETS OVERLOOKED LIKE CRAZY. I couldn't believe how long I've been sleeping on this game!
Amazing review! I seriously gotta make this one a priority!!!
One of the better Final Fantasy's
I was a holdout on SNES FF games but V is what got me into them.
Woah, whatever edition this is looks gorgeous!! Glad to hear some love for my personal favorite😎
One of the first Final Fantasies I beat after VII and IX. It was nice to see the black mages named their chocobo Bobby Corwen after Boco in FF IX.
I see they renamed Boco as "Boko" in the pixel remasters. Shame.
Yup it gets overshadowed a lot and lost in discussions of the other titles. It’s has some funny light hearted moments too, which are definitely stand out in the early titles.
Was just gifted this game for my birthday, only Final Fantasy I haven't played. The wiretap/algorithm recommended your video
It was a great gift. Trust me! Also welcome to the channel!
I just started playing this last night since the collection was on sale, it's more fun than I remember since I played 6 first so 5 seemed pretty generic in comparison. I usually don't like when remasters change the music and visuals, but the updated soundtrack and graphics really make a difference.
I can't decide if I like FF 5, 6 or 7 more. Excellent video!
It's probably my favourite mod for a game ever, it made the early game so wild for me :D
Also wanna quickly shoutout Four Job Fiesta, a challenge run for FFV based around using limited Jobs. Highly recommend checking it out.
My favorite so far, I just started the Ronka Ruins.
My favourite part of the job system: As soon as MONK was available, change everyone to that. Learn Bare hand.
Change job to mages, equip Bare hand skill.
Your party can easily obliterate enemies with normal attacks! (useful for grinding)
Bro monk is probably my favorite class always. Any game that has a monk class I'm like this finna be gud.
Your final fantasy tier list makes me crane my neck and squint but IX is where truth wills it to be, so all is well in my book.
Just started to play it for the first time ever. Job system is the best out of them all
My favorite weakness exploit in the game is for the game late game boss, AzulMagia. If you speak spanish, his name translates to Blue Magic. So if you're clever enough you can use Self-destruct on him and he'll learn it then use it in his next turn-killing him on the spot. 😂😂
The older I get, the more this becomes my favorite entry in the series to play.
My favorite FF actually
You have great taste!
I have similar views to you. I love 4 and 5. I haven't played 9 yet
Jesus this is the best one out of that batch
Even though I loved FF5 when I played it about 15 years ago, like REALLY liked it, not as much as 6,7 or 10, but it went at least into my Top 5 FF list. I never managed to replay it aside form starting and putting down again after 20 minutes. x_x But there were so many nice moments and I really liekd the characters
I always giggle when I remember that the original translation rendered Bartz as "Butz."
Final Fantasy V is a fun game. The job system is awesome. I think the tone shift from previous games is what breaks people. But you can't beat having the ability to make a white mage who can punch monsters into paste.
Gametal does an awesome cover of the bridge theme
Don’t apologize for FF12, we forgive you for not having good taste 😂, lol j/k. I admit the story was forgettable, but the battle system and job classes saved it for me, and I’m talking the PS2 version.
OK we can at least agree on the battle system/job classes. I'm not about the story but the gameplay I enjoyed.
XII is a lot more rewarding if you are already a fan of Ivalice. I've been there since FF Tactics so it felt like coming home for me. I don't know that I would have had the same reaction without that, initially at least.
