This is a sad day for me. Today she passed away and I am heartbroken. Aretha Franklin has always been my all time favorite singer and I'm only 46. This song, Dr. Feelgood, had been my favorite record since I was 5. Yes, 5. It was on the back of a 45 with Respect on the flip side. It just spoke to me. One of the best days of my life was seeing her at The Apollo about 10 years ago. She asked for requests and I shouted out this song and she chose to sing it. I nearly passed out. LOL Not only that, she threw her earring into the audience directly to me and I caught it. It is one of my most prized possessions. I want to be buried with it. God bless her spirit and may she rest in peace. Thank you Ms. Franklin for everything!
Well today this became my favorite Aretha song and Terria Your cool ass story played its part. out of all these comments, Yours was the ONE i stopped on n read. Thank You n RIP Aretha.
Terria Nesmith I also started listening to Aretha’s music as a young girl in the 80’s. By listening to my moms old 45’s I discovered all of her old classics. I’m 42 and her music just touched my soul back then just as much as it does now. The funny thing about it is that I have a cd with a few of her songs on it in the car. When my girls were little they would get in the car and request the cd. It was something else hearing my daughters asking me to play Respcct (Respect) or Jump Jump Jump to it! I played it every time 🙂 They knew good music back then to when they heard it. I can’t believe she is gone, but she is free from pain now. Always remember the music and hold on to that earring 🙂
Ok but seriously did you feel how her piano playing took on an entire life of it's own...so much so she had to remember where she was in the song...SHE'S AN ENTIRE MOOD...Rest easy QUEEN
Yes, yes I did, devilish. It is hard enough to sit and sing. It takes true genius to sit, sing and play.that gospel sound that just makes me break out and sway in a trance EVERY TIME. And to sing like THAT! It is all so effortless for her. Donchu send me no doctor fill me up with all of them pills.... God, I miss her so much. What a voice. What a lady. What a life. She is lead of all angel vocals now.. Rest in song, beloved Aretha.
Aretha was already being called the Queen of Soul by the time of this performance. She was first called the “Queen of Soul” when she was still at Columbia Records.
I'm 43 my mom was a big Aretha fan. She was a sentimental favorite of mine. But MAN!!! I really didn't realize how great she was.I I've been looking at her live performances from the 60's and 70's. She was Mary J Blige, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Beyoncé all rolled up into 1. Dr. Feelgood is so powerful and sexy. I hope she felt appreciated why she was here.
And to think she played by ear and never had (refused to take) piano lessons......her natural level of talent is borderline obscene! What a class act. A genuinely skilled musician and a true singer's singer. R.I.P Lady of soul.
WRONG... She grew up as a child with the best jazz and gospel pianists including her mother teaching her. She had that kind of access to these people due to her FAMOUS father. Do your home work. LOL
@@integratedboxingsystem8827 I hear that about other Black musicians too. The fact that someone is innately gifted doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t also trained.
@@integratedboxingsystem8827 But she is still predominantly self taught with no formal training. She was a child genius, like Mozart and could just emulate what she heard.
Not to diminish her image or legacy in any way for pointing out a negative, but as a long-time smoker this woman could SIIIIIING. That voice was MADE for singing regardless of the long tours, smoking habit, and endless recordings. She used it to it's fullness. Forever a fan! Just something so special about the impact she had on the world when she was alive.
This was in her before-smoking-stole-from-her. Later on, I note that Aretha's voice, although it was good, but it lost what I call a certain "Sparkle". The last album I really enjoyed was the Sparkle album, but her voice was on it's way to a decline. She lost something, some range, that joyful HOLLER as demonstrated on Dr Feelgood.
Incredible how she can be so in sync with playing the piano (SHE AIN'T EVEN LOOKING AT THE KEYS), listening to the band, and singing powerfully with such expressions at the right time all simultaneously and effortlessly. I'd have to do a lot of thinking to carefully listen, look where both my hands are at on the piano keys and try my best to sing with the beat and rhythm
That is exactly what I was thinking. I thought she would play a bit and stand to sing but no, the queen had to do it all. Sickening I tell you 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾.
Rest in peace, Queen of Soul. As far as I'm concerned, no one could ever take your crown. You will always live and reign on in the hearts and souls of all of us who love you.
OMG......I was not ready especially after that piano intro.....RIP Aretha.....Thank you for setting the bar this high and sharing your incredible music and acting talents with the world. We will Never forget you and amazing performances like this one are the reasons we will cherish your legacy forever:) Dear RUclips.....Please Don’t Ever Remove this clip unless it has to be removed in accordance with the law.
This was my favorite Aretha Franklin song. Rest in Love to a queen that we will never forget 💖 she's now singing with Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson
The best set of pipes that any human being has ever had! and her voice sends me to places that no one else can. She was, and still is, in a league of her own.
This wonderful soulful human being really touched the soul of every person in her era she sure did that , mother Aretha was ministering to the kids for years with that blessed voice
A golden voice gone and it will never be forgotten by those who've heard Her down through the years when She was alive, and those who will hear Her now that She's gone. Long live Ms. Aretha Franklin.
no one can match her talent just hits you deep down inside and you feel the music, the lyrics and how much she just brings all the emotions. brilliant beyond words....
GAD DAYAM! Every time I hear this, it's like the first time... Floors me.. Irreplaceable .... Soul Sista! 'Retha was the queen of soul. Smooooooth and silky but cuts ya to the core, lays you wide open.
What a wonderful performance of this song! It's been a one of my favorites since I first heard it as a child. I've never seen this live version until now and WOW - she put it down! I'm not too surprised but it's good to be able to see these old clips. She was a true artist. Rest in Peace Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin.
Remember this one like it was yesterday. Aretha delivered this so well, and I believe some of it had to do with all the drama she was experiencing in her life during that time.
I’m seeing this 1968 Amsterdam performance on BBC4 and I’m blown away by her voice. It has a ghostly resonance and reaches new places that make you happy you found. Young folks need to understand that a maestro of this order is not manufactured. It’s not a voice trained to be mechanically perfect for the sake of perfection. This shit is pure emotion coming from her heart and soul and the difficult life experiences of a young black woman and of the family and friends around her within that community, particularly at an infernal and tumultuous time in race relations in 1950s/60s/70s America. This is original soul food, that black folks ate, slept and meditated on to get them through some unbelievably tough and terrible times.
Aretha had REAL Talent!! One of the few Female Entertainers that could play an instrument and had an incredible voice!! Other than Nina Simone, and from this ERA , NOT classically trained, or Alicia Keys. Even though Aretha and Nina performed similar genres; both were well known internationally. They were superb singers, songwriters, pianists, arrangers, and activists in the Civil Rights Movement. May they both Rest In Peace!!
This right here is the end of pure soul.... you don't believe me?.. then wait for it... it will never ever exist in any one elses lifetime...and I do mean a lifetime!!
Just realized how cute and adorable her "talking voice" was...and how naughty this song is😁😍😍😍
Yep...gets laryngitis..calls Dr Feelgood
Yep! She was a MESS!
I am really shocked at how dirty this is
Grown folks music!
@@adonaiyah2196 Compared to todays music this is classy and tame. It left something to the imagination.

Sorry auto correct. DIVALISH!
Would love to see Beyoncé or any other modern pop princess do this..... HA! The Queen rules them all!
Indeed. She was like Nat King Cole when she played. Both were masters of their art forms.
divalish100 she played beautifully
She played the Hell out of that piano! RIP Queen

😮😮😮she took that piano to her daddy's church

I wish she did a song that explains how to use the word "literally" correctly.
She was and is the greatest lady vocalist we ever had
People tend to forget how great a pianist Aretha was. It is just that her vocals overshadowed her other talents.
