In case anyone is confused about the formula, 450240 is just a quick and easy number that contains all the "known constants" used in this calculation. It's not a "set in stone" number because it varies depending on where you are on Earth. Why? Because the gravitational constant changes depending on where you on Earth.
HOWEVER, the number 32.16 ft/sec^2 has been chosen as the number to use for "general purposes" by the scientific community when it comes to gravity. The variance between your location at and the default 32.16 in this calculation will be negligible at best.
450240 is calculated by multiplying the gravitational constant (32.16 ft/sec^2) times two (64.32 ft/sec^2) and then times 7000 (450240) because there are 7,000 grains per pound. So what's the point of the number? Why do this? Easy. That number is full of constants that will never change in the equation. It's already calculated and easy to memorize as opposed to doing the math over and over every time. Now we just plug in the things that will vary person to person: weight of the pellet in grains and velocity of the gun.
    Foot Lbs of Energy = Pellet in Grains * velocity^2 / 450240
or in the case of this video
    12.59 Ft Lbs = 7 grain * 900^2 fps / 450240
There is a lot more going on with this than I've covered. I'm just trying to keep it short and let people know why 450240 is used. It just makes the calculations easy. If you ant more in depth stuff, look up kinetic energy and go from there.

Thank you. It's annoying when people don't explain why a constant is a constant.

I know that most people shoots air rifles but it would be fun to se a episode about match air pistols...

My state doesn't allow .22 rifles over 700 fps, but I can get a .177 of any velocity. I pre-ordered the Crosman MTR77NP form P.A. and I'm hoping I can bag a few rabbits with it. The MTR77NP was in my price range.

Neutrinos go right through you and the earth because they only interact with other particles via the weak force, NOT because they have nearly zero mass ... Though nice try on a science reference. ;)
.. and yes, yes I am watching and commenting years later. lol Informative and detailed explanations on things are always appreciated, and you guys have done an awesome job.

Velocity means very little unless you consider weight is all WRONG.
The formula for kinetic energy (moving enegry) is 1/2 x mass x velocity. Velocity squared meaning velocity has more effect on the overall enegry of a projectile than mass.

I think I understand why the 950 fps limit. The shape of the projectile is like a badminton birdie. Above this speed it's cavitating too much and has too much head pressure to fly correctly.

hey Greg Bennett I have the crosman optimus in 177 and I have killed a rabbit at 30 yards and it only took one shot and it depends on if u have the 22cal one

    Hello, I love the videos!!
I am English and wanting soon to move into the countryside of Bulgaria. I am wanting to buy a air rifle for shooting rabbits, pigeons and potential vermin. I like the Gamo Whisper .22 model or something similar but I was wondering what you thought of the Hatsan air rifles?

Why is he bringing neutrinos into his explanation? The whole point of saying "they are like _____" is to relate to something the expected audience will already know!
