  • Me rambling on about Craigslist, shitty repairs, and marketing bullshit. The guy thought there was something wrong with the compressor, there was. He had 1/2 gallon+ of oil in it. I think it requires about a quart.

    Thanks Joe, you really made me laugh! It's amazing all the cheap and dangerous quick fixes people do to equipment. Darwin usually takes care of those folks. Great job troubleshooting!

    Heh heh. My brother got a cheap Honda after the owner mixed oil in the gas like he had on his two-cycle scooter. Your video confirmed the issue I saw with an inexpensive used compressor that had too much oil.

    Great buy. Don't find deals like that very often.

    Hi Joe! Excellent video!!! Where I live you have to be very careful with Craigslist and other similar online venues.. They offer a product at a fantastic CASH price and rob you when you get there! Also having strangers come to your home and scope it out isn't a good idea either! It's a shame because it's always the few that ruin a good thing! I have 8 compressors... Most of them portable, the worst by far are the pancake compressors! Every time they kick off they draw a full 15amps and sound like your starting a drag race! 😃👍. Thanks for sharing!

      Haha, your so right, those pancake compressors are the worst. Its funny how something so small can be so noisy. With regard to the craigslist scammers, South Florida has it all....your point about scoping out the house is my biggest fear. As always thanks for watching and commenting, I enjoy your humor and your insights. Cheers.

      All of the older belt drive compressors are great. They are nice and quite. In my opinion, the older the better. Cheers

    Coincidentally, I also happened to pick up a CH 'vintage' ala 2010ish compressor this week (also my first craigslist buy, but the seller was a super cool guy and business owner, which made things nice from a safety aspect) that had a suspicious oil slick on the tank right around the check valve area. He got it from a guy in his same business area that said he barely ever used it, it shows as it's practically mint, but had the usual old compressor issues. The seller was nice enough to put a new pressure switch in with the deal, but I suspect the oil issue from og owner is probably gumming up the check valve. It's getting a full workover when all the parts finally arrive, but I bet your over-filling oil symptom happened to this unit, too!
    Anyway, the seller said he had the same experiences with fluky prospective buyers that six people said they were interested and either never showed up or never called, etc. I was at his shop early and waited a bit til he opened. Not saying I'm a wunderkind, just the way I operate. Guess I came out of the 'if you're not early, you're late!' era which is evidently a dying breed. Guy was so happy I was there when I said I would be that he knocked $50 off asking price, which made it an absolute steal!
    There ya go, kids. Commit to what you say you will do and the roads will be paved with gold. 👍

      You are part of a dieing breed, nobody ever shows up on time, and by on time I mean early. I have given up on Facebook marketplace, now I send stuff to the auction. Thanks for the comment. Cheers

    I believe 15 amps x 115v / 748 watts would rate it around 2.3hp here in the US and not 3 1/2 hp...but I am a rookie that researched watt to hp conversions yesterday and I am not a sparky so please correct me if I am mistaken.

    • @joeheilm
      @joeheilm  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Scott, i suck at math so i just used an on line calculator....if i remember correctly the calculator i used had an efficiency factor of 70 or 75 % which pushed the hp even lower. Anyway thanks for watching and commenting.

      After your video I went out and looked at the specs on both my 1 1/2hp Campbel compressor and the Campbel 3 1/2hp. Just FYI both are rated at 15 amps, go figure. The 3 1/2 hp blows the breaker if on the wrong circuit or hooked up to too long and wimpy of an extension cord...(which is why it was $5 at a garage sale) so I bet I am missing or do not understand winding strength, run capacitor differences, etc. Cheers!

    • @joeheilm
      @joeheilm  6 лет назад +1

      @@scottlund4562 does it trip the breaker on startup or when it is near full? It might be worth testing the start and run capacitors.

    • @joeheilm
      @joeheilm  6 лет назад +1

      @@scottlund4562 one more thing i just remembered. I read in a tool forum that cambell hausfield used fake hp ratings, for example they claimed that a 1.5 hp compressor worked as well as a 3.5 hp. Therefore they stamped a big 3.5 on the side, which is just marketing bullshit....anyway good luck thanks for the comments. Cheers

    • @scottlund4562
      @scottlund4562 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the heads up on capacitors, the former owner had more of the tripped breaker issues although it did happen to me on the run a couple times when I first got it. But now if it is plugged direct into the shop (20amp?) it runs strong with no issues. If on the garage outlet (10/15amp?) or on an extension cord, it starts, but barely runs. The 1 1/2 hp compressor on the same line fills up fine and only slows on the refill each and every time.

    At 3:28 the label reads 115/230 volts. Wouldn't that double your horsepower figure if it was set up for 230v?

    • @joeheilm
      @joeheilm  5 лет назад

      Hi Don, no it would cut the number of amps needed in half. The horsepower is the same.

    Where is the oil drain plug on this particular model? And do you know the size tool for it? Thank you.

    • @joeheilm

      It is just a square pipe plug at the bottom of the crank case, i believe it is 1/2”.

      At 6:07 you can see the drain port to the left of the site glass. Its covered buy the air hose. I have the exact same compressor other than the colors and writing (CH Excalibur). I have owned this since new back around 1990ish. Been great but it was having hard start issues so I added oil (with poor lighting), probably too much. Though the pump cracked due to oil on the tank. Finally looked into it today, the breather is burping a little. I will try to clean the breather as Joe did I have drained the oil (almost a quart) and put it back in a couple times but can't see it register in the site class. Even tipping the compressor up I still don't see it. She has been a great machine over the years.
