  • The SD40-2Fs were built by GM in 1988 for CP using the full carbody with the Draper Taper used on CN's SD50Fs and SD60Fs. They were nicknamed "Red Barns"
    Retirement began in 2012 with most if not all retired by 2015. Some have been sold to CM&Q.
    They are seen in operation in various parts of Western Canada between 1991 and 2011.

    Aaaand now here we are in 2020, with some CMQ SD40-2Fs freely roaming about around the CP system. They've been all over the place as far as upstate NY and even Chicagoland recently!

    Yep. I'm a fan of 3000HP SD40-2's that CP has on their roster workhorses. Saw plenty of them here in Pa on the former D&H Sunbury main thru the 90's. Even them redbarn's made their appearance either north or southbound freights on the D&H. The big & small pacman's dual flags the Soo inspired red paint editions before the GE AC4400 hundreds became prevalent on the main. Now NS has become the new owner of the former Delaware & Hudson main.

      +David Othen The SD40-2 seem to be very robust engines so there could well be more life in them especially after a rebuild.

      Yea, at least CN still has some of the SD60F's and C40-8M's running around. (As well as BC Rail's C40-8M's)
      Been lucky to catch a couple of the remaining cowl units (Mainly the GE's) on CN 528/529 in the last year or so

    I say that General Electric and EMD should return to the Cowl Body Freight Locomotives.

    Why the blanked out windows on 5768?

    • @TrainGeek
      @TrainGeek 6 лет назад

      A few of CP's SD40-2 units were "B" units where the windows were plated over and they were operated in the middle of consists, never leading. I believe they were equipped with Locotrol for distributed operation. Some were returned to leader status later on.
