Does your BMW feature an electronic gear shifter?
Any new BMW model with an automatic transmission will feature an electronic gear shifter. Learn how to utilize the electronic gear shifter to shift gear and park your BMW.
The transmission settings are clearly printed on its face, to ensure you always know if you're in ""park,"" ""reverse,"" or ""driving."" Once the vehicle is started, you will automatically be in ""park."" To select ""neutral,"" press forward past the point of resistance one time, twice for ""reversing.""
In order to select ""drive"" from the park position, pull back on the gear shifter twice.

Working as a hotel Porter in South Africa. This has been helpful lol
What was wrong with a regular shifter, prnd
instead of this strange gimmick thing
Absolutely nothing. Automakers once again trying to fix what ain't broke. Like toilet paper, some things really are fine just the way they are.

Exactly
Ikr loved the Standard Automatic Shifter atleast it wasn't Complicated as this...
What is so confusing with this gear shift is that you press forward for reverse. Not good. I always associate pressing forward for drive. I wish BMW would change that...it’s very dangerous.
Really? I find it very common in most cars I've driven in. Drive was mostly at the bottom and reverse is at the top with park
@@ashn_antics9123 I think the previous commenter was referring to how the default position of this shifter's Park position is behind the Reverse position unlike other vehicles where the shifter position in Park is ahead of the Reverse position. This is because the BMW shift lever doesn't have a different physical location for each gear unlike a more conventional shift lever where even a blindfolded person can tell what gear it's in just by feeling what position the lever is in. Of course that same person can shift the BMW once they know how it works.
You are Right, someone should tell this to BMW manufacturing.
Many other machines use push front for Forward and back for Backwards, even video games also

Hey I need help
My 2008 bmw 320i has a problem when it drives its like the transmission is bad and give me like a delay or like a jockey motion , the mechanic said it's the *gear shifter module* I already change the transmission and I still got the same results, can anyone inform me about this gear shifter module ?
Looks complicated to remember
What if I pressed the p and then break and moved gear but it didn’t move . Ps I ignited using a remote control the electronic one
Shifter is too complicated to understand toyota's one seems easier to understand you just shift the damm thing without it having to be complicated.
My problem is the gear shifter is switching few times without pressing Lock Button.
Does any one knows how to Lock this permanent to shift only when Lock Button is pressed ???
This is a stupid design. We’ve gotten used to it but a valet attended is likely to be confused. I wish someone could explain why BMW decided to make a quirky mess out of a simple concept.
Why does this gear shifter have to move forward to go in reverse and backwards to go in drive.
It’s BMW ….
Because the lever has only one physical position. You change gears by toggling it away from its rest position (Park).
I suppose they could've designed it so you can only toggle it backwards (in order of P, R, N, D). The P button can still retain its original function of shifting from whatever gear back to P.
In short, this is an electronic shifter retaining the physical look of a conventional mechanical shifter.
Engineering Stupidity at its finest 😂
I suppose I have to watch where the green light is while driving?
BMW has outsmarted themselves.... buy simple and reliable, buy Japanese car.
BMW should make a video on how to put the car in neutral or disengage the transmission when your car will not start or the battery is dead. I am sure 100s of tow truck drivers dragged the car on the flatbed which, is not good for the transmission.
My concern exactly. Although I believe even if the car doesn't start, the car still turns on enough to shift to neutral. When we left our X3 out all Alaska winter, it wouldn't turn over, but the car display still lit up. It was buried under the snow so we didn't see whether or not we could get to neutral though
@@jonathansmith7306 Interesting, thanks for sharing!
What about manual mode? Can we change the mode from automatic to manual anytime?
Are you serious 💀
@@prone1548 it will be my first automatic car and I have been driving manual car since the beginning. So I have no idea if there is any specific practice on this matter
@@sin30cos15 you cannot switch as the transmission will be built to function as automatic or manual
@@prone1548 I think he means with the paddle shifters or using the gear stick to manually shift instead
@@ryancross9903 that would be a semi automatic, but in this case the model he's talking about is automatic
One time
Why isn't R at the bottom 😕 seems its upside down
I totally agree Jake B...I have a 2022 X1 and it is very confusing to go in “reverse” by pushing the gear shift forward. Common sense says forward means to drive forward. I wonder how many accidents occur because of this backwards gear shift? I hope my mind stays sharp for the next 3 years until I trade this car in for another car.

I suppose the main advantage of this style of shifter is the quicker engagement of Drive from Park position.
BTW, how has your muscle memory fared?
@@abdul-kabiralegbe5660 I still don’t like the shift…very dangerous and I can see why some people may drive through a store instead of putting the car in reverse or park. For us 60 years an older people, we need less confusion.
@@Lilliancooks I feel your sentiments.
ZeE GeRmAn EnGiNeErInG!!
Super👍🏻
So mines is a 8 sport mode but how to I make it go up it’s only stuck to mode 1
Thank you, really!
While waiting at red light, you prefer to select N or just apply brake? Asking for BMW f32, steptronic gear
Why would u shift to neutral? You still had to use the brake
just stay in drive. The reason anyone wants you to stay in neutral is to prevent you resting your foot and letting off the pedal potentially pulling away making an accident. More often than not they are either bad drivers/had a bad experience or are shit scared of doing 42 in a 40 despite owning a m4.
Any car in neutral without the brake, foot or hand IS OUT OF CONTROL !
@@thejohn7821 no, it's the fact that if someone were to rear end you in a traffic stop your foot would slip off the brake and your car would go bombing into traffic potentially causing another accident, whereas if you just select neutral with the handbrake on that won't happen
This was very helpful. My father could not put ours in park. What a loser lol
Don't make your father a looser. Because of him you are now on this earth. That too goes for your mom.
Did they make you a looser when you didn't know different things during your lifetime ?
