Charlie! The great unsung hero of the Stones. The man who sits in back with his beatific smile & nails down the tastiest beats with power & economy- never a wasted movement or showy flash. In Keith Richards’ must-read autobiography, “Life”, he talks about how amazing Charlie is. On the gigantic stages they play today, Mick runs waaaay out into the audience on a catwalk, so far that his vocals take an extra second or two to reach the band back onstage, so to sync up the drums(& thus, the rest if the band) with what Mick is actually singing, he WATCHES Mick, and ADJUSTS his timing ever-so-slightly so that the band is in sync with Mick’s vocals! That’s GENIUS! And it comes from playing together for 50+ years! Much respect!
How is that even possible? They use monitors, earpieces, microphones, speakers, mixers, stage speakers, electrified instruments, radio transmitters instead of amp cables...... and electricity itself to power it all. Am I supposed to believe that a drummer can't hear a singer on time because of distance? In 2020? If it is true I'm about to be rich..... edit: Mick would have to run from the UK to a Pacific island to have a one or two second delay.
If you’ll notice, Charlie is not wearing a headset or an ear piece like Neil Peart & many others did/do. Charlie drummed organically, and so the sound of Mick singing, once he got that far out from the stage, created enough of a small delay that he had to watch him and adjust his timing accordingly.
Unpretentious Charlie, man what a drummer. This clip really shows how hard he hits the skins, especially the licks at the end there. He is so effortless looking from the front and a distance, but he really gives them a whack here.
