  • "The Baltics Are Waking Up!" is a trilingual song composed in 1989 by Boriss Rezniks for the occasion of the Baltic Way, in which two million citizens of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, created a 675 kilometer human chain from Vilnius to Riga to Tallinn. The Baltic Way was a groundbreaking demonstration against the Soviet Union for the independence of the Baltic States, and was a pivotal event during the Singing Revolution that brought forth the independence of these three nations. This song is sometimes regarded as the joint anthem of the Baltics.

I want to organize something like this along the entire NATO-Russian Border. “No matter how long you survive, there will always be a dream, a dream for a free world, a free nation, a free Eastern Europe, and a democratic world. No matter how long Putin or Xi try to stop us, we will endure. No matter how much you try and stop democracy, it will come to you. And you should know that. May this message encourage a faster process in this regard. And may, just like 1989, the new iron curtain, fall.”

NATO is trying to get closer and closer to Russia with military bases and stuff like that, on the other hand Putin wants the Novorossiyan land. No one is right, so think twice before saying something so important.

You have much to be proud of. Very much to be proud of........ I think that if I could drop a pin on the most important countries on the planet right now, it would be the Baltics. The tree Baltic sisters have similar history, gone through the same atrocities at the hands of ussr/russia. We have mutual understanding and solidarity and empathy towards each other. Ukraine is also like our sister, also gone through a lot, and history is repeating right now. We are in full support for Ukraine, lot of solidarity. The morning the war started, facebook was on fire... People posting and sharing posts, arranging help for Ukraine. From the moment I woke up, within 2 hours, two mini buses from my area where I live alone (there were many more from other regions), left for Ukraine stuffed to the roof with donations, mostly basic necessities like warm clothes, hygiene items, food, diapers and baby food/formula, and fuel. All the stuff necessary for the refugees who left in a hurry and were stuck at the border not knowing what next. The same busses brought refugees here on their way back, people opened up their homes as temporary accommodation till long term solutions were found. To this day we still have a lot of people donating money or their time, and doing whatever they can to help depending on their skill set... Lot of groups that make camouflage nets, trench candles, knitting woollen socks to keep Ukrainian soldier's feet warm, and specialised gloves that allows drone operators to operate drones while still having their hands warm (yes, we were actually given the desired glove design), as well as woollen socks that can accommodate a splint or a cast and can be unbuttoned for the injured brothers. It Is amazing to see how people have come together. (Even though we do have a bunch of idiots too unfortunately, who are just asking to be deported to mother russia with their behaviour and attitudes).
I wish more countries and more people felt as strongly for Ukraine as we do and helped to the maximum.

Mr. Zelinsky was in Washington a couple of days ago to make his case for continued assistance from the US. It's a no brainer in my opinion, but our dysfunctional government is not in agreement. The Republicans want concessions concerning the southern border over which millions of people are pouring across, unfettered. I don't think that is at all an unreasonable request. We have no idea who they are or what their intentions are, but it continues non-stop. It's a massive drain on resources. New York is going broke trying to deal with it and they are Democratically run, go figure. Add to that the situation in Israel, which has unfortunately taken eyes off of Ukraine which I suspect was another reason for Mr. Zelensky's visit. If the Democrats will make those concessions (which help both us and the Ukrainian efforts) no reason aid to Ukraine cannot continue, but as usual, the Democrats make the Republicans out as the bad player. No one I talk to here about this (no one) believes we should not continue or increase our assistance to Ukraine. Unfortunately, it has become a political football. I remain hopeful that this can be worked out and we do our part to push the devil back to where he belongs. Hopefully, Ukraine will one day soon become NATO nation if that is what they want, and their people along with others in the region can live in peace and with hope for the future. I'm curious, where are you from?@@SpiritDragoness

I recently discovered the history of the Baltic states and how they become independent from USSR and I've found it inspirational.
As a native Cantonese speaker I would absolutely love to see an independent Cantonia(Kwongtung province) one day.
I think the Cantonese people deserve to have an independent nation-state and have our language as the national language separate from Mandarin. The Chinese government has been suppressing our language for so long. While historically the Cantonese have been grouped into a part of the "Han Chinese", I think we are different. If we don't separate ourselves from the Northern Chinese it's only a matter of time before our language becomes replaced by Mandarin under the collective name of "Chinese". People around the world still treat Chinese like one single language. And I don't want to see that. I want Cantonese to become an independent language forever and I long for the day where our people can become independent from China.

Yes, the last war between Russia and Lithuania was in 1918, but we were invaded in 1939 and opressed ever since until 1991, after which we tried to distance ourselves from Russia as much as possible. That's for a reason. Throughout history Russia abused smaller neighboring nations. Why would it stop? In fact the Russian government even claims that Lithuanians are just Russians who forgot that they are Russians (I don't know what the process is called in english). You can never be safe near Russia unless you have western protection. God bless NATO.

@𓀟 Russia has invaded our countries twice and then oppressed and russified the hell out of them. In the last 30 years they have invaded a lot of their neighbors unprovoked. You really think that if the Baltics weren't in NATO, Russia wouldn't invade us just like their other neighbors who aren't in NATO? Despite being the biggest country on Earth, Russia apparently doesn't have enough land and we aren't gonna take any chances this time.

It's amazing that these three countries went from being oppressed and in the Soviet Union to being members of the EU and NATO within 13 years, joining the Schengen Area in 2007 and adopting the Euro in 2014 (Latvia and Estonia) and in 2015 (Lithuania). What a transition! I wish the same for all former members of the USSR.

Today (at least in my timezone) marks the 34 years anniversary of the Baltic Way. I wholeheartly wish the Baltic states have a bright future!
Unfortunately the Baltic Way is not mentioned in our history books, I only learn about it recently... Yet the Baltic states and the eastern European countries fighting for freedom and democracy is a very important event in the 80s, and a sad contrast with what happened in the East at the same time (Many people might not realize the Tiananmen Massacre and Solidarity winning the first democratic election in Poland happened in the same day...)

communism proclaimed itself to "liberate the common people from tyranny" yet all it did was kick them down, all it did was leave them a life in abject slavery, while the "elites"; those in charge of the state and the party, lived luxurious lives almost exactly like the tsars and other monarchs of old before them, as they exploited their own country's land, destroyed and harassed entire people groups, and subjugated smaller, then-helpless republics. its no wonder than that eventually people would start standing up and raising their fists against the tyrants, and such people should be commended for their bravery.
let us hope that the red tyranny won't rise again, and the dream of democracy and true freedom from authoritarianism can continue to spread to other parts of the world.

How is it justified to bully smaller states around you and then try to make the people there Russians?

@Адам Ланзовић you can try justify it all you want but the truth is. It’s a occupation. But why the Russification? Why actively try to make the people the Russian? They were their own people not Russians . Ussr wanted all of its former lands back. And Stalin wanted a Russian ussr. If you are gonna annex 3 countries after a accusation (which was likely baseless) at least let the people be themselves. But no. They had to become more Russian. Also even if it was strategic. Why not let go when the threat is over? Uk occupied Iceland during ww2 and it was freed later. so please tell me why they held the baltics till 1991 and even then not letting them go if not to basically reunite all of tsarist Russia?

Still surprised Estonia get's grouped with the Baltic twins, Estonians aren't even Indo-European, they're Finno-Ugric. But still, nice to think that there was an anthem for the Baltic way.

Kinda makes me sad that my grandfather doesn't really remember Lithuanian anymore, suppose that's a result of living in the states for so long.
