The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is the premier late night talk show on CBS, airing at 11:35pm EST, streaming online via CBS All Access, and delivered to the International Space Station on a USB drive taped to a weather balloon. Every night, viewers can expect: Comedy, humor, funny moments, witty interviews, celebrities, famous people, movie stars, bits, humorous celebrities doing bits, funny celebs, big group photos of every star from Hollywood, even the reclusive ones, plus also jokes.
I love how they're grown over the years. I saw them at a small club in Seattle about 15 years ago and I've been a fan ever since. Their sound is so distinctive!
So true! I heard them for the first time back in 2011 thanks to Portal 2 and the song Exile Vilify. Never would've predicted at the time they'd become my favourite band. Or that 11 years on I would *still* feel that same excitement I felt when Trouble Will Find Me came out with each new release. Their earlier albums have aged like fine wine, the new music does not disappoint and it's something that is loved by people of all ages. They really are a timeless band.
Edit: Idk if you follow them closely, but they released a single in 2020 called Never Tear Us Apart as well as a song they did for a film named Cyrano (that song being Somebody Desparate). You should give those two a listen if you haven't already! I'm hoping the recent releases mean there's a new album in the works.
How do they do it? How do they keep getting better and better?
they've got absolutely different story than the other bands, they're like WINE, older means better!

the don't get better and better. high violet was their peak. now they sound mostly generic.
They've done it all, they even snuck in a song in Portal 2 (aka the greatest puzzle game ever made)

Song sounds good until the misdirection about two minutes into the song and then it reaches heavenly heights.

Good lord. That moment at the end of the string / guitar crescendo when the piano kicks in and then the female voice comes in. Goosebumps. I honestly like this rendition as much as the studio version.

Had the privilege to listen to the whole album last week, what to say....another incredible record.
It’s Alicia Vikander aka Tomb Raider / the robot from Ex Machina on the cover. She appears in their Light Years music video. Really beautiful song as well.
She's also the star of the short film by Mike Mills

I really like the the guitar and drums in this, most of the non singles are mellow but this one is so quick, the drums played so well it almost doesnt sound right but there is so much energy. the beat is hard to follow but the energy is what holds the song together, the strings help with that too,

I started listening to them about 5 years ago. I have to admit i have maybe less than 10 songs I’m really into but its not so much emphasizing on a single instrument, some bands are big on synth, keys, guitar, bass or drums, they’re more on the melody. There isn’t a single instrument than sticks out with this band to me. It’s how the music mixes together i like the most. The little guitar parts of this song and constant changing drum beats is what i like about this song.
Surely they performed Rylan as well? RELEASE THE TAPES! (please?)

The National are the only 2000's band more popular now than they were back then. Arcade Fire, Death Cab, Okkervil River, Deerhunter, Grizzly Bear, Spoon, Decemberists etc., not so much. *btw, I love ALL these bands!

Been to these tapings live. They're in the early afternoon and the audience energy during the musical performances is always embarrassingly low. They aren't encouraged to stand up or get into it and there's a wall of staff in front of them taping the show . Then they're encouraged to applaud as loudly as possible.
too bad, was hoping for a "rains of castamere" performance. ;)
So wonderful they're actually coming closer to the sound of Arcade Fire.
They must have had to do a couple takes because you can hear Cobert say "Thanks again" and "Much better" at the end

Although I love the band, I have to say that they are not at their best live. The mix in their live performances is quite often wrong to my ears. They are best enjoyed on vinyl record through a warm amp with a glass of whiskey in one hand - their genius shines then.

This band had been releasing the same album over and over again since 2001. It's a good album, but they need to shake up the formula.

It’s actually really funny you mention this on a performance of the most 'different' record they ever made. For the first time ever they had such crucial changes in sound, I‘d say. Female vocals throughout the whole album and different song structures and lyrics due to the collaboration with Mills for the short film.
