    I recently gifted a sketchbook to my girlfriend and she doesn't think her drawings are works of art but i tell her its fun doodles and not every artist or work of art started out a masterpiece. A sketchbook is for practice and fun. Her art is so cute and she likes to add poems or phrases alongside her art. She enjoys it even though sometimes she has a hard time with perfectionalism. I told her everyone started somewhere even the famous artists practiced until they got where they are today.

      @@JayofallTrades I remember, as a self-taught mixed media artist, realizing one day that those of us who have the urge to create visual art don’t have to be Picasso or Matisse or da Vinci to be “artists.” There’s a whole world of wonderful art to see and to make out there by motivated, creative “ordinary” folks who study and practice what we love. Because it makes us happy. Maybe we’ll display our work, maybe we’ll enter it in art shows, and maybe we’ll sell it. And maybe we won’t do any of those things. Art is a form of self expression from which I believe everyone can benefit!

    I just found you on RUclips and you've given me a whole new perspective on using a purse size Sketchbook. I bought a small Winsor&Newton A5, 80lb months ago that would be suitable to put in my purse. I used it once, then put it in the cupboard with my larger sketchbooks, where it sat until I watched your first podcast. I then dug it out and started to create, and I'm full steam ahead. The smaller size pages aren't as daunting as my large size sketchbooks, and being 80lb I can using pens, markers, watercolour pencils/paints....so happy to have found your channel❤

    I almost skipped watching this because it seems like every time I watch a drawing/sketchbook video, I doubt that I would be able to replicate the art that’s produced. I never learned how to draw and continue to feel intimidated by it. But your video is wonderful! I watch and immediately feel like I could actually do that!❤ You have inspired me to try! And I love what you say about creating the habit-even if it’s just a few minutes each day. Thank you so much for sharing all of these ideas and showing me that it can be fun and easy and personally satisfying to work with just one pen and a sketchbook.

      I really relate, especially to “I was never taught to draw”, so true for me too. I believe that ‘average’ students often miss out on the encouragement and support those who are clever or struggling receive.

    • @MicheleEngel
      @MicheleEngel 2 месяца назад +4

      @@flis625 That’s a great point about the lack of attention to “average” students. That’s exactly what happened to me, now that I think about it. I took art in every single year of middle school and high school and usually got a B or B- each semester. Never any type of personal attention, encouragement, or support. There was one outstanding exception in 8th grade when my teacher reported to my parents, apparently with some excitement, that she thought I was very creative-a report I’ve obviously remembered to this day (and I’m 70 years old now and have taught myself to be a mixed media artist because-you guessed it!-you can make beautiful things without knowing how to draw). I had been taking ballet lessons for many years when I was in 8th grade, and this particular teacher, who knew I went home every day after school, put on broadway musical albums, and danced to my heart’s content, invited me to demonstrate that to my entire art class. She was way ahead of her time as an art teacher who truly understood the meaning of art and creativity. 👏🏼

This really matches my likings, and all I drew were weird lines that might signify coral reefs, my feeling that day, or simply nothing. The fourth idea would be sooo helpful to me so that I can continue my lines. I don't have much options, but when I could, I would also try adding a blue line between those black lines.

    I love the blown up mockups. It really changes the look of the art. Every time it looks nice on paper, then brilliant on mockup :D
    Also, re your advice about keeping a notebook, I'd even add keeping a cheap-ish notebook!
    I've started practicing recently, and for painting I needed some thicker notebooks which were more expensive and I hesitate a lot more to use them, while my cheap notebook is filling in nicely with sketching exercices.
    I love the last two pages with doodles and the curved line ones :D

    • @bycreativepaula

      Totally agree! Whatever paper you have actually works! I believe in having a creative practice for selfish reasons; so really the materials can be any, depending on what that reason is!
