- If you're new to working with PDF patterns, here's a great tutorial on how to print, cut and assemble them. I share two different options for printing the patterns. I'm also demonstrating three ways to cut the patterns. If you've never assembled a PDF pattern before, don't worry, I've got you covered with step-by-step instructions. I even take you onto a website to observe as I order a PDF pattern. I mean, you never know. Someone may not have a clue about how it works.
Sometimes when you're learning something new, you want all the steps, so that's what I'm providing here. Enjoy the video and maybe you will be inspired to start sewing with PDF patterns too.
The dress I'm wearing in the video is McCall's 7563 (Out-of-Print)

Many years ago I subscribed to a fashion magazine that included a multiple centerfold with sewing patterns that used the same premise. I am so glad to learn that today there is a source where single patterns can be accessed, as opposed to being saddled with an unwanted “ pattern package” 😊
For years, I have been wanting to learn sewing. It was you who encouraged me and I want to thank you for giving me this gift. Thank you Anita. Thank you and god bless you.
OMGosh! Oh Sherry, my heart! Thank you so much for sharing this with me. It is my great joy to share in this space to encourage others. Hearing these words from you is a gift to me. God bless you too and Merry Christmas.
@@AnitabyDesign Merry Christmas to you too Anita.
Anita i Think you should start making your own patterns you are so comforting at explaining things 🙏
Oh my gosh! Rosa, thank you for the great compliment.
Thank you from Ireland, very clear instructions 💚
You’re welcome 😊
I love you Ms. Anita!!!!
Awww, love you too.
Outstanding job of detailing how to do this! Thanks very much.
Glad it was helpful! You're very welcome.
Thank you. I've been avoiding them.
I used grid paper to cut my own pattern forms using this copier printed version as a template. I cut out the pieced paper form. Place it over the grid material available at cloth store by the yard. I use painter tape to hold them together. Remove easily without residue or damage. It works great for multiple uses.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing.
Anita, you are a delight and I love the dress you are wearing! I am so pleased to have stumbled upon this video. This has been very helpful, thank you!
You are so welcome! I'm so glad you found my channel. 💕
You’re like a breath of fresh air,thanks
OMGosh Debra! Thank you so much! 😘
I avoided them like the plague for too many years. I think the first one I did was for my daughter who wanted a short cape to wear on a trip to Europe that would allow her some coverage and warmth but allow her to keep her arms and hands free. It wasn’t the best drafted pattern, but it opened my eyes to possibilities. Fast forward 7 years, I sew almost exclusively with them, everything from dresses, camis, tops, jackets/cardigans. In fact, I have only sewn maybe 2 or three of the big 4 in the last 3 years! This summer, I made 3 dresses, one for me, and one for both daughters and they wear the same size. I have done both print shop files and at home. I use he cheapest paper for at home, when the print shops closed for a while. I love that I can grade patterns easier. I used the true Bias cami pattern to make a slip for my daughter to wear under her dress, light colored linen. She was extremely pleased with both. Currently, I love Love Notions, Style Arc, Patterns 4 Pirates. So wonderful to buy one pattern and have the ability to do it in multiple sizes.
PS, you have fallen into the rabbit hole, Alice!
Oh how EXCITING! Yes, I see many who sew exclusively with Indie patterns. I can’t wait to see where this leads. Thank you for sharing some of yours favorite companies. Adding them to my list.💕
I love the paper cutter idea. It makes cutting much easier.
Just found your channel and loving it! I’ve sewn off and on for years but now that I’m retired I want to get started back. It’s so hard to find clothes for a 70ish woman. They’re either too ‘young’ or don’t fit properly. I’ve never adjusted patterns to fit so that is something I’m very interested in. Also I’ve just found PDF patterns! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in such a pleasing way.
Hi Tommie! I'm so glad you found my channel. I'm very happy to have you here.
I recently found a pdf pattern that I wanted to sew. I was getting frustrated with all the pieces to tape and I found your video. Thank you for this information. You are a very patient instructor.
Awesome! So glad you found this video. You're very welcome.
Fabulous that you took the time to do this presentation in very clear and easy to do steps. I learnt two things about pdfs that I did not know and I have been printing out documents for years - just goes to show we can all learn something new. Even from across the pond your positivity and smile just makes my day.
Awesome, Sandy! I'm so glad to hear you learned something new. I just love how we're always learning. Thank you so much for being here.
Love your teaching style, easy to follow & concise.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing. I've been sewing 50+ years but I ran from using PDF patterns. No more because you made using PDF patterns soooo simple!!! So glad I'm subscribed.
Yaaayyy! Have fun using PDF Patterns.
Okay... I'm watching this twice, because, I too have been avoiding PDF Patterns! Thank you so very much for this tutorial. Now, I will feel comfortable purchasing many designs that I loved, but avoided in the past because the pattern was in PDF format.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for posting a very important video for sewers to expand to new designers. You are such a great teacher, you talk very clearly and show every detail for those of us who need the Dummies version of using the computer. The McCall's dress you have on is adorable!
Thank you so much, Cheryl! I really appreciate your words of gratitude. I'm so glad you found this video helpful.
Thank you! A daunting task of navigating a PDF pattern has now become streamlined, and I am very grateful 😉
Yaaay, Carol! I'm so glad to hear that you found this helpful. Have fun preparing your PDF Patterns.
Phenomenal video....very informative...I'm new to sewing and using PDF files. Thanks so very much for sharing your time and talent!
You are so welcome!
Love your shares and your spirit.
You walked me through my very first PDF pattern. Like you I have avoided PDF patterns, I may have been intimidated with technology. You made it super easy Anita! Thanks so much.
Awesome Elizabeth! I'm so glad to hear that you found this tutorial to be helpful. Have fun with your first PDF Pattern.
You are so great! Thank you for the videos. I took home ec in 7th grade and never sewed again. Now I’m a grandmother and I wanted to sew things for the grandkids. Your video has helped me tremendously. Thank you.
You are so welcome! Have fun sewing for your grandkids.
Great tutorial. Thank you. Now I am ready to try a pdf sewing pattern!
You're very welcome. Have fun with your first PDF pattern.
This is such good information. I printed a pattern but didn’t know about cutting off the 2 sides so now I know why it never lined up correctly. Also I never knew how the copy shop option worked. I called Office Depot asking about how to print patterns the full sheets and they never understood what I was talking about. Thank you so much for this tutorial. It explains everything. You’re absolutely a class act.
I’m so glad to hear this was helpful, Marian. Thank you so much for the compliment.💕
I have been hesitant to try pdf patterns till now. Thank you for the positive guidance. Can’t wait to try one! Well done.
You are so welcome! I hope you will enjoy working with your first pdf pattern.
Thank you! I have never ordered a PDF pattern, but your explanation was very easy to follow! Opens up a whole new world for me.
Glad it was helpful! Yes, I'm looking forward to learning more as I go along.
Absolutely helpful and detailed! Thank you
@@Angela-pi6zc You’re welcome 💕
You are a pleasure to listen to! I have just found your channel and subscribed. Thanks!
Thank you.
Oh my gosh! I love the beginning and intro. Great video quality. You’re such a pro my friend. 😀👍
Oh my gosh! Thank you so much Anthony. I’m having fun learning how to improve the quality.🤗
So it’s cheaper to do the printshop? I guess that’s the route I’ll go
I never use a PDF pattern by learning from you I may give it a try, thank you.
You're very welcome.
This is excellent information. Thank you for posting this because I have wondered how to make PDF patterns. 💖💖
You are so welcome!
I printed my first pdf pattern yesterday and after watching you I see where I made a mistake. Thanks for this!
You are very welcome.
Thank you Anita
You're very welcome
Wow! You are such a teacher. Very patient and detailed. If I ever start seeing I know exactly where to go.😀
Thank you so much Anthony! I really appreciate that.
Thank you so much. I have started using pdf patterns this year. It is time consuming to print the pattern and then put them together. I was calling it my pandemic puzzle.
Hi Kathy! You're very welcome. I guess we can make the best of these days by trying new things.
What a beautiful intro. The quality of your videos is outstanding.
Thank you so much, Lele! 🤗
I have only worked with a few PDF patterns so far.... downloaded the last two onto a memory stick and took them to our local copy shop...was cheaper than buying a new ink cartridge to print from home! I don't mind putting them all together, kind of find it relaxing. Used a glue stick to put the pages together. I will be looking into the option of having them printed as one or two pages ....didn't know about that option, glad you shared that info! I enjoy your relaxed and thorough method of teaching...thanks so much for all you research and share with us. I recently learned of a pattern company Lekala Sewing Patterns (on-line) that will create PDF patterns for your personal measurements/height ...tried out two of their free patterns to see how well that worked out and the top and pants fit me perfectly! I am impressed and will be purchasing patterns from them for future sewing. Thank you Anita, I hope you are having a great day! ~ Gail/NH
Hi Gail! Yes, I hear you on the ink cartridge. And the glue stick option is great. I forgot to mention that.
OMGoodness! Thank you for the mention of Lekala Sewing Patterns. I can't wait to check them out. A custom PDF? Now that's worth trying out for sure. I'm excited! Thank you so much. Have a great day.
@@AnitabyDesign You'll be quite surprised at the affordable pricing they (Lekala Patterns) offer too! Lots and lots of patterns to choose from.
Gail Curran glue stick. Is a good idea
@Anita by Design When I tell you that I thank God for coming upon your channel. That Angel is indeed an understatement. I was on my way to ordering a 29 page document to be printed by Office Depot. Which All 72 pages of several pdf pattern files wasn't too bad at 18 dollars total. I see now why the other pdf files are 1 page documents with your explanation to check in the lower left corner of the document for the printing measurements. So I am finding that the one pagers are allowing me to have the pattern printed already together. Thank you so much for this detail guide to understanding these pdf sewing patterns. Happy Sewing.
You are so welcome. And now PDF Plotting has changed the process to make it easier. You no longer have to check anything. You simply upload your file and they do the work for you. It's even better now.
This is so helpful! THANK YOU!
So so so helpful ! God bless u
Thank you for taking the confusion out of PDF patterns. I have wanted them and went to order one the fear of ordering it wrong was so strong I chose not to purchase. I feel much more confident and will be able to choose the correct way to download or order my pattern. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your feedback, Tammie! I'm so glad you found this helpful and now feel more confident to order. Have fun with your first pdf.
Such a comprehensive guide. Thank you so much, Anita!!
You are so welcome!
Excellent tutorial. Thorough without being wordy. I haven’t used pdf patterns yet but know they’re in my future. I’m sure I could have figured much of it out but you’ve saved me lots of frustration and probably some cash! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! You're very welcome.
Thanks Anita for sharing this video. Not really a fan of PDF pattern but after this video will definitely give it a try. Thank You
You're very welcome Michelle. I hope you will enjoy your first PDF.
@@AnitabyDesign than you
Thanks so much for doing this. I avoid PDF patterns for clothes too. I love vintage sewing and most of the patterns are PDF and also way less expensive than paper if they even have them. I am going to try one today thanks to you. So blessed to have found you. I've sewn for years but always learn so much from you.
You are so welcome! I'm really glad to hear that you found this tutorial helpful. Yaayyy! Have fun sewing your vintage pdf pattern.
Thank for going over the information, because I to hate PDF patterns. I have NEVER used one. This information was invaluable.👍💯😍
Awesome! I'm glad you found this helpful.
Great video Ms. Anita! takes the guest work out of the assembly process!
Hey Julian! You're very welcome. Glad you found it helpful.
Thank you Anita for this tutorial, watching made me reflect on my mistakes and I know it will be better next time for me..
You are so welcome!
OMG, I wish this was around when I first started using PDF patterns. Thank you for making this video. It answers all questions!
Oh, you are so welcome. I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the tutorial. Thank you for the feedback.
A really great educational video Anita. Your presentation style is so clear, easy to understand and also friendly. I’m about to cut the right side and bottom off my pages before sticking my pattern together. Recently I have been going to Megan Neilson shop across the road to get them to print off the A0 copy of my PDF patterns as it saves so much time
Awesome Christine! I'm so glad to hear that you found this helpful. Very convenient to have a copy shop so close by too. Have fun assembling your pattern.
Anieta you’re a blessing, thank you very much for this tutorial I didn’t understand how to print a pattern at a 100%, thank you very much.
Oh Netty! You have blessed my heart because I always hope that my videos will help others. Thank yo so much for sharing your gratitude.
Thank you. So much for this video. Your directions are so thorough and easy to understand.
You're very welcome, Nancy! I'm glad to hear you found the tutorial helpful.
Great information Anita! I used pdf plotting for the first time recently myself, and it was AWESOME. I Sent the Jessica dress from Mimi G and the summer day top from Made Everyday with Dana (I bought this patter two years ago, haha..., and never printed and cut the pdf). At pdf plotting, I did upload the AO version, and I live in the US...hmmm 🤔, but it seemed to work...😂. I didn’t know it was for out of state printers 🤷🏻♀️😂! Have a wonderful week! 🤗
Oh cool! Thank you for sharing that the AO copy works in US too. I didn’t know that.
This was very helpful, Anita! PDF patterns have always intimidated me too. Love your dress as well!
Glad it was helpful! Maybe you can give them a try now. Enjoy the process.
Thank you Anita . ALWAYS an excellent video. Be Blessed!
Thank you, Dara! You be blessed too.
Now, I just learned something new about cutting specific sizes. I don't know if this is for all PDF patterns, or this is just for True Bias, but that feature is a game-changer!
I love that feature too. I don’t know if all companies offer it.
This is awesome Anita, you’re a real Pro, thanks for sharing and courage as you open the world of knowledge to us, remain blessed
Thank you so much!
Fantastic! Just the information I needed! I have been too scared to try any pdf patterns, but now I am raring to go! Thank you sooooo much Anita 💕 Bless you!
Oh YES! This makes me so happy! I'm glad to hear you found this helpful and are ready to give it a try. Have fun with your first pdf pattern.
Hi there. This came through my suggestion feed today as I was digging around RUclips. Love your suggestion of printing with a copy shop and giving them MULTIPLE projects. Now if I can just figure out how to cut all this out quicker? Heaven. For sure will be subscribing to see what other tricks you have up your sleeve.
Wonderful tutorial ❤! Beautifully explained. Think you may have taught this old dog a new trick. Thank you.
You are so welcome! So glad you enjoyed the tutorial.
Anita you are so awesome! I hate printing and putting together PDFs, this video was so helpful!
Oh, Claire, I totally get it. I'm so glad this was helpful.
Excellent information and instructions! Easy to follow and understand
Thank you
You are welcome!
Thanks for the video. I'm just starting back sewing but was shying away from PDF patterns. Now, I can stop being intimated by PDF patterns and purchase them when the paper patterns are sold out.
You're very welcome.
You are so radiant! Can we go for coffee and talk about sewing? I am now a subscriber to your channel. Thank you for your excellent tutorials!
Thank you so much, Barbara!
This was great, Anita. You are so thorough. Thank you for doing this. I avoided them, too. But, what I like most is the quality paper they can be printed on. Next, I think I would print two copies so I can make alterations on one and keep the original in case I mess up. I like supporting the independent pattern maker, too. But, I notice the big houses are even offering PDFs. Thanks, again. Take care.
You are so welcome! Yes, the paper quality is a plus. I noticed the Big 4 starting to offer PDFs too. You have a great day.
Anita i love you! Struggled with this so many times .thank you so much 🥰
Oh Rosa! I'm so glad you found this helpful. Love you too, sister!
Use them all the time
Thank you so much for this video. You took the mystery out of the dreaded pdf pattern. I actually downloaded a free pattern last night and will start my project this weekend!😁 Peace and Blessings.💖
Awesome! Perfect timing! Have fun with your project this weekend.
Thank Yoi Sooo much!!! This is so helpful!! Your a great teacher, very clear and concise!! I Love, Love your channel!💕😊
Thank you so much!
Oh have you looked into projectors yet. Game changer!
No, I haven't. I saw someone post about a projector on Instagram but I have no clue.
@@AnitabyDesign you display the pattern right on your fabric and cut. No Paper! Most of the PDF patterns are adding projector files along with the printables. They are even updating their old patterns. It's great!
Great instructions Anita! I usually print the test page before the entire document. Ink is expensive and I am frugal. I will save the file with the other sizes removed and print at copy shop. Thank you for this lesson. I don't usually use my laptop. I didn't think to use my rotary cutter. 🤭
You're very welcome. Yes, that test page is crucial.
Anita I love your videos. You have great style. You are concise and articulate in your instruction, very thorough with nothing left to wonder what is meant.
I really like the dress you were wearing and thank you for mentioning the pattern. I was wondering about the copy shop printing. That was very helpful and good idea about printing more than one.
Someone I know in a Facebook group took a pattern to a local shop and they quoted her $56 for printing!
Hi Linda! I'm so glad to hear that you are enjoying my videos. You're welcome about the dress pattern mention.
I just about fainted when you said $56 for printing. Oh my GOODNESS!!!
I have alway avoided buy patterns buy mail because of the pdf so one day I tired it and I had a bad experience withe pattern I told myself never again but after watching you and how you explain how to do it the correct way I think maybe I will try it again you made it seem so simple I think 🤔 I will try a easier pattern like what you have and see how it works thank you so much I really appreciate you
Oh Stephanie, I totally understand. Yes, give it another try. I laughed when you said, "I think". 😂 I agree on starting with a simple pattern. That's exactly why I chose the t-shirt to demonstrate with.
FYI - Love Notions Patterns is having a half price sale starting tomorrow (Friday). They have some great basic patterns. Tom Kat Stitchery uses a lot of their patterns if you want to check them out. Itch to Stitch is another great Indy Pattern company. Great instructions!
Oh Sandy, thank you so much for sharing this information. I'm heading over to their website today. I'm so excited about this new venture.
Thank you I hope I can only print the size I need . You make it look so easy . I live in United Kingdom, not sure if we can send copies to any printing shops here. So I will try to print it on my printer. 😊🤔 I like the idea of having it printed for me, but the shipping will be expensive if I did the Ao way I think .love you videos.
Hi Sheila. I wonder if there are any copy shops in the United Kingdom. Maybe you can google it to find out.
Thank you Anita. I feel so stimulated, empowered and educated by your channel. Your delightful attitude and love of what you do is infectious. I hope I can now navigate my new Baby Lock Soprano and make you proud. A fellow tea drinker.

Hey Faith! Thank you so much, my sew sister.
Thank you! So any patterns I have liked recently were PDF only. I had no idea how to do this. Excellent video!
You're very welcome Kathleen
Love this video thanks for the guidance, I have been using PDF Plotter with great success
Oooohhh yaaay! Anne, thank you so much for sharing your experience. I'm so excited, I can barely stand it. I placed my first order yesterday and received the email today that it has already shipped. Oh my GOSH! Somebody's gonna have to calm me down.😂
