    If you are looking to join any level of marching as a percussionist, back strength is extremely important. Last season I marched Bass 3 and this season I'm carrying shallow-cut quints. For basses: Endurance is key. If your band is going to be doing a lot of parades and full run-throughs, buckle up. Basses seem light when you first put them on but will feel heavier as time progresses. I recommend practicing without stands so that you can keep your drum up on the field for longer. For tenors: Your upper back is going to be sore. This mainly is from the harness digging into your back. Newer models of harnesses are starting to solve those problems, but if you come from a low budget school, expect lots of pain. Tylenol is a friend if you think the pain is pretty bad, but if you get used to the weight from practice, it may not be a necessity. I would assume that snares are nearly the same as tenors. I have not marched one, but they have a center of gravity that is similar to tenors.

    This was awesome! I've been been in four seasons of marching band and two seasons of indoor percussion and the fitness is ridiculous. My first two seasons of MB, the band director had us run in block for an hour and then in technique block, if ANYBODY messed up ANY WAY, the whoooooolllllle band had to do anywhere from 5-50 pushups, depending on how bad the screwup was. So when it was the first four weeks of band camp and all the rookies were learning technique and the sorts.... fun. Although, being fit is one of the greatest feelings in the world, because you can do whatever you want. :D
    People say marching band isn't a sport. LIES. ALL LIES, I SAY!

    How much running is involved in Drum Core? I know at Gold Auditions they have you run non-stop around a track for an hour. How long/far do you guys run in Spirit?

    • @Jdfuncorps
      @Jdfuncorps  10 лет назад +2

      A lot haha. We didn't go for an hour at SOA, but at camps we'll often do a 10 - 15 minute run as a warm-up. Eventually, we'll either increase the time or the speed that everyone runs for more conditioning.

    What do you do if you don't have the instrument for the spot you're looking to make such as contra

    • @Jdfuncorps
      @Jdfuncorps  10 лет назад

      Just about all corps will let you check out a horn at audition camps for the weekend. For tuba/contra, you can bring a concert horn to audition on. They'll do their best to get you on a contra for things like visual, but do NOT bring a sousaphone for camp.

    How should a tenor drum player (who doesn't own a tenor drum) train to get acclimated to carrying the drums? Is there a way to simulate wearing the harness? Like, a backwards backpack filled with weights?

    • @jakedrumfellow
      @jakedrumfellow 11 лет назад

      Dead lifts, rows, cobra crunches (back-ups), and any ab exercises. I'm a snare guy, but having a strong back is an absolute must for any battery percussionist.

    I have a couple freshman (and upper class-men) Mainly in drumline and my baritones and trumpets who just can't get their horn angles up, I'm a first year baritone, and I can do it, why can't they? Do you have any tips of how I could get them a really good 20 minute workout during school so they can work on their arms, legs and posture with me?

    • @StephieChelle
      @StephieChelle 10 лет назад

      Make sure they are using the proper muscle group. Most of the effort to hold a baritone at a correct angle comes from the muscles between your shoulder blades and your triceps.
      Putting your hands on the seat of a chair and doing triceps dips works pretty well.

    What do you do about nutrition during camps and while touring? What kind of food do they provide and how often do you get a chance to eat? I'm vegan and while I'm willing to make compromises, I'm hoping to minimize those compromises when possible.

    • @chen-youwu1118
      @chen-youwu1118 6 лет назад

      Mariah Rogers so idk if you’ve already figured out the answer by now through marching a season or what but if you haven’t, here goes. all corps will provide meals during camps, and they are always very good and nutritious meals. All corps eat 4 times a day during camps and during the season. Also, most, if not all, don’t provide vegan meals. Mainly because it just doesn’t provide the nutritional content you need during the season. They do provide vegetarian meals, but not vegan

    How does church work with dci?

    • @DatOneGamer9870
      @DatOneGamer9870 4 года назад +1

      It doesn't. I've heard corps like The Cadets have had some freedays on Sunday and some members choose to find a nearby church to attend (Sometimes, it doesn't matter if the church is a bit different, as long as they teach your general beliefs, you should be fine). If you really need to keep up with religious studies, try downloading a Bible or bring one to read. If you happen to be Catholic, try to bring a rosary that you don't mind losing, and sit down before bed to pray. In the end, if you can't stand being away from your place of worship for periods longer than a month, you probably shouldn't do DCI. Hope this helps, even if its over a year late.

      Keep any inhalants that you need with you at all times. Start with an open class corps to see f you can handle it

    • @StephieChelle
      @StephieChelle 10 лет назад +1

      I marched two seasons of Open Class DCI with Forte and I have pretty awful asthma. I marched baritone horn. I kept my inhaler and portable nebulizer in my backpack. The first season was really tough, ambulance ride and passed out a couple times, but the second season was WAY better. DCI taught me the proper way to breathe and that has helped me immensely both with performances and everyday life. My suggestion to you is to check out breathing exercises and make yourself use proper technique when practicing. I don't know your position, but the Brass Caption Head would definitely have some exercises that will help.
