Well said, man. I had a similar experience this past season with getting cut. I auditioned first for the Bluecoats Hornline for the 2023 season, and unfortunately, I got cut the first round. I however got a callback from the Blue Stars and went to that camp in January, and as a result, similar to you (almost) I was the last cut for the Baritone section. I was absolutely heartbroken because I knew that if I wanted to march that summer that I would have to go through a whole other audition process again, and since I had already gone through it twice, I had a lack of motivation to go through it again. I pushed on, however, and I contacted multiple corps (this was late January) seeing if they still had any spots available I could audition for. Ultimately, I ended up getting a callback from the Mandarins and ended up going to their February brass only callback camp, and it was there where I finally had gotten a contract. Initially, my plan was that I would re-audition for Bluecoats for 2024 and have Mandarins as a fallback, but as tour started and the season progressed, I knew more and more that the Mandarins was the corps that I wanted to age out in. In hindsight, I realized that I was nowhere near ready (especially in visual aspects) to march any sort of world class corps during the audition season, and I am eternally grateful for the staff and Mandarins seeing what potential I had, and even though I still have much room to grow (post 2023 season), I am excited to learn even more from them and to improve my skills further!
You mention how getting cut from one corps could lead to opening new doors, and this couldn't be more true, especially from my own experience. If I were contracted anywhere but Mandarins, I believe that my trajectory would have most likely led me back to eventually being a part of the Bluecoats. However, with the AMAZING show that I had the honor of marching (I mean common, Sinnerman was amazing) as well as the comradery with the other members and the relationships I built with both other members and even the staff, I literally can't see myself completing my drum corps career with anywhere else BUT the Mandarins.
If you are reading this and have recently been cut from your dream corps, you have every right to be upset about it, because I sure as hell was too. Trust me, though, never pass up the kind of learning opportunities you can get from being cut from you dream corps.

Not making a college drumline is much worse than not making a DCI/WGI drumline. Not only is the bar for entry much lower, but if you get cut from your drum of choice, you're most likely stuck on cymbals for an entire semester. College cymbal lines aren't like DCI/WGI cymbal lines where the demand is ridiculous; it's merely the "didn't make snare" squad just like in high school.

I really appreciate videos like this. I wish I had that mindset when I got cut from Bluecoats this year. I saw it as myself being bad and not good enough as opposed to seeing it as an opportunity to go through new doors. Because I got cut I got into contact with a TON of drum corps and it landed me at mandarins this year. And honestly getting cut really was a blessing in disguise because there’s no other place I want to spend my rookie year.

Hey Kyle, saw this vid on Instagram. I got cut from battery and was moved to vibes. First few days of band camp(since I’m a freshman, it hurt me really badly that I spent freshman year in pit), I just didn’t want to do anything or talk to anyone in pit who actually cheered me up. Throughout the season, I was getting noticed from both the front ensemble and battery tech’s and ends up I got a plaque because I didn’t stop pushing to get better(the most outstanding freshman award). The only thing I did wrong was just mark time weirdly and it really discouraged me with band in general after I got cut from battery. Your video just makes me feel happier because I know that other people go through the same thing, just in different ways.

Story time. So I'm 15 and Woodwinds in general are my bread and butter and 4 and a half months ago I had never touched a brass instrument besides 2 months of playing trombone when I was 12. My friends Chris and Luke were doing drum corps. A thing I had never heard of. In fact I didn't even know it was called that until my other friend told me they were performing in Sacramento. I was like what is drum corps and my friend said it's basically professional marching band. I've done marching band for 2 years and I love every second of it. I was going to go check it out but was feeling a little under the weather so I didn't go. Biggest mistake of my life. I had no idea the true beauty of dci and I missed a chance to see Babylon dreams and Nighthawks and the life rite after in person. It wasn't until a video showed up in my recommended in September 2018 "Carolina crown 2018 dci for video" and I said hey DCI that what Luke and Chris did. They did BDB but at the time I didn't know that. I watched beast and I was blown away. I listened to it for days just repeating it. It was the first and only show I knew. And then I heard Babylon... I listened to the first 4 minutes, went up to Luke and said teach me how to play euphonium (that's what he plays). He says why and I said I want to do drum corps. We talked over which I should do and he recommended BDB but after what he told me I was determined to do Mandarins. Tryouts were the last weekend in November and it's the beginning of October. So I practice every single day and auditions roll around and it's packed. Nearly 90 euphoniums and here is me 2 months playing surrounded by people playing for years. Auditions go really well but I'm sure I'm in the bottom 20. They had way more people than they expected so they were really delayed on getting responses out. But a day goes by. Another. Then a week. And I'm sure I got cut. But my friend Luke who did BDB and also tried out for mandarins hasn't gotten anything back yet so there's hope. Almost two weeks later I get an email from Jw Koester, it contains a document "callback.pdf" my friend Luke got the same thing. 42 euphoniums got callbacks/contracts. Less than half. And I had gotten it. So callbacks are January 18-20 and at this point I've gotten so much better. They gave us movement 1 and 2 of their opener music for 2019 and if you thought flight of the bumblebee in metamorph was crazy... Wait till you hear Sub-terra. So callbacks come around and I'm ranked number 41 of 42 euphs. They're taking 30. I've got 11 people to beat. So the camp went great I met so many amazing people and I got really close with Luke. we had our first full ensemble and ran the show music and afterwards I legitimately cried. they're definitely gonna get top 8 this year. So I go home and feel great but I know my chances are next to nothing to getting in. The next day I get an email and it's what I'm expecting. I got cut. But my rankings are shown and I'm 34th. 4 spots off. My friend Luke got 3rd. He's on lead Euphonium and a possibility soloist depending on what they do for their ballad. So after a week he tells me 3 people didn't take the contract and asked what I was ranked. I told him 34 and went to the bathroom and cried because I had missed out by one spot. And I had heard the full ensemble show music and I knew what I was missing out on. Missing out by one spot. Had I just gone to that comp in Sacramento I would have started so much sooner. All that time was wasted. I have realized though that that is a god damn accomplishment that I made it that far. I beat out 55 other people most of which have either done dci before or have marched euph at their schools and have been playing for years. And here I am one spot away with less than 4 months at the time under my belt. I knew I wanted to do drum corps so just in case I had gone to the BDB auditions in December and got a contract the weekend of so it was guaranteed I was doing drum corps this summer. And BDB isn't even traveling outside Cali this year so this video helped me realize the whole blessing in disguise thing. Think about it. If I was a month away from a top 10 (definitely top 8 if not higher this year) drum corps, think what a year of playing and a season of dci will do for me. This year will be a huge stepping stone this year and next year I'm going to walk into Mandarins camp and absolutely kill it. Thank you for helping me realize that.

Getting cut just frankly sucks... there's not a whole lot that can be said other than that. I got cut from BCoats - frankly because I didn't put the effort in that it required (I also had no idea how much effort that was, so it was kind of a catch 22), I ended up with Ltd Ed. and did the weekend corps bit... I wanted so badly to do Madison, but never had the chance to just go and do it (probably one of my biggest regrets)... I ended up marching UT in college, and had some of the greatest experiences with a college band that you can. I still love corps, and will probably wind my way back into a DCA if I can just get my kids to get old enough to let me play on the weekends :D.... My point is, always try, because you never make the shots you don't take...
